Had a really good day (dont know why) worked in garden and moved 6 wheelbarrows of mulch. A little ice after but no heavy drugs.

This week I've done a hour of yoga, my Wii Walk it Out 9,000 steps for 66 minutes for 2.3 miles, general light water exercises for 30 min and 1 hour of a joyful joints class at the pool.

I've finally been well enough and injury free long enough to get back into the yoga class at the gym. This was my third week and it's going well. I'm also doing much better getting in my Wii walking program that is low impact and I'm up to 6,000 step which is a 45 min workout.

It is similar to tennis and ping pong, but played with a wiffle ball and paddles about twice the size of ping pong paddles. The court size is smaller than a tennis court, and the net is lower. It's very popular with the seniors in Florida.

A 30-minute, two mile "walking" class. I felt somewhat weak and tired while doing it today, and took an hour's nap later this afternoon. It has been pouring rain here all day, and I don't wonder if that affected my energy level.

As a matter of fact, I played pickle ball again yesterday. It is similar to tennis and ping pong, but played with a wiffle ball and paddles about twice the size of ping pong paddles. The court size is smaller than a tennis court, and the net is lower. I still haven't learned all the rules. It is quite popular with seniors in Florida. I have poor hand eye coordination and I don't move very fast, but even I can play!

What is a pickle ball?

Just started trying to get off of couch after months lying still trying to avoid pain. Did 35 min on recumbent bike at 0 resistance, and then iced my legs down after. What a pain. But, I have to say after things chilled off it was maybe not as much and i was kinda chipper i did that much.

Trying again tomorrow.

Today I played pickle ball for the first time. It was a lot of fun and a great workout. I'm pretty darned tired right now. Fingers crossed I won't have any major after-effects, because I really liked it.

I've been on the exercise roller coaster for a long time. I was doing pretty well with "gentle" yoga but took a break for physical therapy (planned as the last step in treatment for an SI joint injury from an exercise I was doing) which really helped with balance and gave me some new tools. Now I'll be easy back into the yoga.

Usually my injuries occur from advancing too quickly and getting slapped back into reality.

I am doing well with the pool exercises and walking to "Walk it Out" is going well, no shoulder pain.

One thing that really helps is I committed to having a hot stone massage every two weeks. That's helped with shoulder healing and helping to keep the knots under control.

Thanks for your tips.

God is my pilot.

Hello Ireta. I'm sorry that you are having a lot of pain after exercising. First of all, let me say that the term "strenuous" is relative. I've been at this a while and have learned my limits. A physical therapist once told me that determining just how much exercise is appropriate for people with fibromyalgia can be quite a challenge. Start slow, doing only what feels comfortable for a short time. If you don't hurt, then add a bit more activity for a little longer. If you don't hurt after that, add a bit more challenge for a little longer. And continue gradually increasing your exercise routine until, yikes, it doesn't feel good anymore and you hurt more. Then back-off. Go back to what felt good and did not increase your pain.

For me, that now means I try to exercise with a group Monday thru Friday. I mix it up... fitness class, arthritis aquatics (pool exercise), and yoga. Each activity provides me with different physical benefit, but each provides me with a little social interaction and support. The social aspect has become as important to me as the activity. The combination works to keep me physically comfortable and emotionally healthy. When I don't stick to this routine, I suffer more pain and tend to become depressed and anxious. If I overdo things, I will become very fatigued. So, while I would like to go to a fitness class at 9:30, and then go to a yoga class at noon, I know that I can't. I would be totally useless the rest of the day. But my pain usually increases if I am stressed out, and activity helps to lower my stress. It's all very circular.

But I didn't start with hour-long classes. I exercised at home, primarily walking or yoga, and when I felt up to it, I joined a yoga class. It took many months (years?) to be able to "work out" every day. (I put work out in quotes, because I rarely ever break a sweat!)

Now, keep in mind that all of my classes are for senior citizens. It is very eye opening. There are folks much older than me who can do more than I can, and some younger that can't. But almost everyone has physical complaints that come with being older. So everybody hurts!

Consider too, that some post-exercise pain is normal, and you should be able to tell if your muscles are just sore because they're being used differently or if you are having extreme fibro pain. You can work through a little soreness, but you don't want to trigger a flare.

So... Start slow. Increase gradually. And keep it up, until one day you find it really does feel good to be active! Cheers! I'll be thinking of you.

Thanks Topaz- Do you find you have a lot of pain after a strenuous fitness class? That's been my problem.

Cheers to you, IRETA! 6000 steps!!!!

I started the week/month right be going to my fitness class this morning. It was strenuous considering I haven't been in about a month, but I feel good and I hope to start a "streak" of exercising daily again.

No opportunity to do the yoga this week but plan to try next week. I did walk at home using the Wii Walk it Out program and did 45 min/6000 steps. Hopefully the shoulder will feel ok later.

I have been out of my regular exercise routine since Christmas time, and my body is feeling it. More pain, more restless legs, and my mood isn't that great either.

My last exercise was last Monday. I went to Yoga and it felt wonderful. Don't know why I didn't make myself go to my other exercise classes. This week I've put everything on my calendar and hope to get back into a routine again.

The best thing about being part of this group is being able to talk about the challenges of fibro and getting in good exercise. The last exercise I did was walking in the warm water therapy pool with some balance exercises as well.

I'm healing from an injury to my shoulder from swimming too much. Those episodes are so disappointing and certainly don't help with losing weight.

I also feel like I'm always taking baby steps and going back to "square one". Going to try to get back to Gentle Yoga this week. One day only and with an instructor who really knows how to teach people with physical limitations.

I have actually started taking a bootcamp type workout at the gym twice a week...I only do what I feel my body is able to do. Then on non-gym days I walk on the Gazelle or do yoga/stretching.

Today is a new day...the possibilities are endless!

A "toning class" at the Y today. I have a feeling I will be very sore tomorrow. This was a basic strength training class for "Active Older Adults." I've got the "Older Adult" part down, but I'm certainly not very "Active." If I can, I will keep going. It is just twice a week and would be a nice complement to my yoga class. We'll see how it goes.

This morning was the first time I went to the Y with my husband in a couple of years. 6:30 is a little early for me, but I was up for it today. Did about 20 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the recumbent bike.

I'm home from Michigan and aching all over from a wonderful, though strenuous, week of caring for and playing with my toddler grandson. So I started today with a 30 minute walk with my husband. It is a spectacular Fall day here in Kentucky, and it was a pleasure to walk and catch up with him after a week apart.

Walking. Tried going back to Curves a couple of days ago, and it aggravated my back. I was recently diagnosed with degenerative arthritis of the spine, and I think I may have to make some changes to my exercise activity so that I don't make it worse. Gotta find a "new balance".... Just when you think you have things figured out, things change.

Yesterday I walked my 5k and since I decided to participate in a team challenge of Couch to 5k challenge I ran 10 times during my walk. Today I am doing my Bikini Workout as my alternate. This program is working out well for me.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food. You are your body, and your weight loss efforts will succeed exactly to the extent that you mange to do the work on behalf of your embodied self. Youll do much better when you focus on making positive changes to improve your health and well-being, rather than on fighting your bad habits.

Yoga. Today's class was great... About 40 minutes stretching and poses followed by about 20 minutes meditation. I was walking on air when I left!

I am doing the Bikini Workouts and I really enjoy how I am feeling so much stronger since I started doing them. I have 5lb. dumbells that I use as well as a Dyna Band that I use for my resistance training. Doing lots of crunches every day also.

From our house to the main highway is 5k so today because it was a nice enough day I decided to try, for the first time which I thought would be a different challenge, to walk to the highway and back to see how my body would react to the outside walking conditions. About 1/3 of the way I started feeling my baby toe on my left foot complaining it didn't have enough room and was rubbing the toe next to it. At about the second third of the walk my right hip mentioned it had a kink and once I noticed that the rest of the body wanted to tell me their woes also. It took me 40 min. to walk and the wind was a bit too cool for my comfort level but other than being a little discomforted it was an enjoyable experience. I definitely could see myself doing this again on a warmer day when there was no cool wind. This is just the first small step to finding the person I once was and loving myself again because I can do anything I put my mind to.

Walked 30 min on treadmill doing the weighloss program which varies the speed. 4 is my max walk/jogging speed. Struggled with the last 10 min of that because I have been away from it for so long. Did a lot of gasp..ing LOL.

My foot is now healed and today I grocery shopped from 11 am. - 3 pm. (-40 min travel time and 20 min standing in line ups). I'm back able to walk outside again once it warms up a bit more and I have been using my treadmill on the weighloss program, when the weather is too cool for me.

Good morning all...since I last posted here I sprained a tendon on my right foot between the ball and the toes. This has meant I have had to take the week to rest up my foot staying off of it as much as possible. It's feeling better today and so I'm going to give my foot a trial walk on my treadmill as it is easier on my feet than walking outside. Weather is too much snow on the sidewalks to go walking outside anyways. Wish me luck that my tendon doesn't shootout any more nasty sensations again. I'll keep you updated on how I did later on today.

Wow! I've just went back through these posts. It's great to see all the different kinds of activities we fibro folks are able to do. Walking, whether by tread mill, out in the sunshine, on the beach, in the woods, or indoors with Leslie Sansone, seems to be the number one exercise. But our other exercises are quite varied... they include yoga, belly dancing, aquatics, Pilates, resistance machines (Curves), gardening, stretching, and Tai Chi. A number of us are even preparing to participate in 5K walks/runs!

Cheers to all of us!!! Keep sharing your daily achievements... You never who you will motivate!

I have a treadmill with a P2 setting which is a weight loss program that varies the speed of the machine. Today I accidently pressed the P2 button instead of the P1 which allows me to decide for myself the speed. I decided to see how well I would be able to do it. I lasted to speed 5. My normal speed is 3.5 and after one min. I was gasping and had to stop the machine. I then carried on with my regular routine but I decided also that I would continue to start every workout on P2 until I was able to stay on that program for 30 min. I will still do my regular 30 min. 3.5 speed until such time as I feel it becomes too slow. This is all in an effort to get myself ready to run my first 5K marathon.

A week of doing absolutely nothing has left me stiff and achy. Back to the drawing board this morning, with about 15 minutes of Randi Botnick's Gentle Stretch Yoga (see "Yoga Resources?" post under General Team Discussion Forum). Not much, but a start toward getting me out of a rut.

My yoga instructor held a 2-hour yoga class on Saturday to "wring out 2013" and to "open" for 2014. It was great. But even though I was able to keep up, I am still hurting today... not fibro pain, just post-exercise, achy muscles. Some gentle stretching today should get me feeling better... I hope! emoticon Happy New Year to everyone!

Walking video with Leslie Sansone. I'm very frustrated this week, because I'm in a flare and can't exercise. I can barely walk. I am extremely fatigued and have missed a day of work

Thank you, Jen (Bittercat), for your concern. Taking care of an elderly parent is quite a challenge especially when dealing with my own health issues. It's important to remember to take care of myself so I don't end up exhausted and in a flare.

I would like to caution you, Jen, about aerobics and jumping rope. Most information I have read regarding exercise for fibro patients strongly discourages any exercises involving jumping. Yoga, stretching, walking, and even some strength training are all more beneficial and less stressful on our bodies. I wish you well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Cathy, best wishes for you with your mom. My family is starting to face similar questions about our mom. For now, she lives alone, but most of us are an hour or more away. I go every weekend to help her out, which is hard on me with the fibro.

Anyway, sorry to be off topic.

Last exercise I did was walking. Thursday morning, my community is having an aerobics class/food drive. The price to attend is one or two canned food items. I'm seriously thinking about going.

It's hard for me to exercise lately. For the past month (at least), I've been flaring really badly. Lots of pain. It's off and on, but it's frequent enough to be disruptive. I also have a jumprope at home and have been thinking about starting to use that and starting to do some sit ups.

I WANT to be motivated to exercise, but the pain makes it SO hard.

After another week with no exercise, I'm determined to get back in the groove. Started with an 8am Yoga class this morning.
