Why am I here....sounds a bit metaphysical to me. Why I joined this team and challenge is that at 47 years old, I have finally come to realize that I can't just eat a couple meals here and there * completely avoid veggies * and spend the evening after work sitting on the couch.

I need to make some changes. My parents are aging and their health is not good - and they are both older than either set of their parents were when they died. My health, at last has become a priority in my life.

I am here for support. I sabotage my goals with eating all the wrong things and finding reasons not to workout. I have lost 23 lbs over the last 2 years and kept it off on another weightloss plan. It felt hard not having support from that plan, my family, or co-workers.So, I want to reset and start small. I gave up regular soda 2 years ago and that is goal #1, no diet soda or sugar sweetend drinks, water only. Goal #2 eat 1 more serving of fruits & veggies a day, and goal #3 is to move more...I secretly have wanted to run a 5k, but fear of failing holds me back. So, I am looking for a run/walk this May 2013.

I'm here to improve my sense of well-being, to lose weight, to eat more healthful foods, to learn to like to exercise. All of this is so that I can move more freely, reduce swelling in the legs and sciatica, reduce back pain, have more energy, and enjoy life a bit more.

I'm here for so many reasons. I waste my time working out because I sabotage myself with food. I'm an emotional eater, so when I get stressed, I eat things, but not what I should. I don't like veggies and I want to learn to like them. I do like salads, so at least I have that. Like a lot of you, I feel like I've been on a diet my whole life and I want to be done dieting and enjoying life, not worrying about my weight. We also have a young son that I want to be an example of and I don't think that right now I am. I don't eat badly (most of the time) but I eat too much. I am more concerned with what he eats than what I eat. I want more energy, I want to have no more back pain. Yep, so many reasons. I've been on spark before and had success, I want to do that again.

Jeanette, it took me THREE WEEKS to move that dadgum scale in the direction I want it to go-but my pants were getting considerably looser after just two. The scale is just ONE tool in this healthy lifestyle journey. DO NOT give up! I totally have faith in you! Get a good cloth tape measurer and start measuring if you haven't already!!!

You should try Chef Meg's lentil loaf! It's SO incredibly satisfying!!! I have a couple bean recipes that are surprisingly hearty and filling, if you're interested. Just PM me and I can give you the links!

Edit: Also, Ingrid, I totally understand your frustration. I mean, look at my frikkin ticker. I bawled my eyes out in the spring when I went to get jeans and just bought the size I thought I must be, since my yoga pants still fit, and they were a 20....The size I bought was a 24 and I couldn't get them past my thighs. I got the 26, and they fit, but were a bit snug! I was mortified. I was a 26/28 after I had my son in 2006. I really get where you are coming from.

You made me think Glitterfairy. I just joined all the veggie teams I could find, to see if there are nice satisfying meals/salads that I can also bring to work! I love nice salades, but I don't have much fantasy in preparing them :-) Thanks so much for the idea! emoticon

I am here because I don't want to diet anymore. I am tired of wasting money and time on diets. I want to eat healthy, I want to be more active, i want to give my excuses a big ole sucker punch and knock them out the door once and for all. But I need support. I need reassurance that just because I didn't lose 1 pound this week, I am still ok and not to beat myself up. I am my own worst enemy.

Thank you for your reaction Glitterfairy. (love the name). I used to cook for myself every day, but the last 2 weeks I've been buying processed food like bami-meals, massed potato meals and even chips. I came back from a holiday in the USA 2 weeks ago, we traveled around to visit my DH family (from Florida to NY) and all we did was going out for lunch and dinner. I gained 4 kilo's! That is 8.8 lbs. I thought I would lose it just like that, but I'm not back in a rhythm (whichever rhythm that was...) I gained another 2.5 kilos (5.5 lbs). My clothes are so tight, my trousers get too short, my t-shirts under my sweatshirts are crawling up. Writing this I just feel like crying, I'm more heavy than ever.

I used to eat meat and (raw) veggies with some bread and potato

What types of foods are you eating primarily, Ingrid? I just ask because I find that when the base of my pyramid is vegetables and I avoid processed stuff, I'm hungry a lot less. The more processed foods I have, the hungrier I seem to feel.
Welcome, by the way.

I am here to learn how to have the foods I like and still lose weight and get fitter.
I have never been a snacker and I know my portions were far too big so I want to learn how to eat better. Tracking my food has always been a chore I do have a written jornal which helps but now I have joined this challenge I am adding my food here as well.
I plan my meals so I can add everything in one go for that day.

Abi, kudos to you for understanding what you need to do and moving forward to do it. You and your children will be happier and healthier and stronger as a family because of your actions here. emoticon

I need a Re-Spark, and am hoping this will refocus me and help me find that motivation again that I had when I started with SP last April. I'm feeling kinda burned out with food tracking and being plateau'd. Maybe this can make it fun again. (Was it ever actually fun?? I don't know. Was it?) I need the community support I think, to get going again.

Anyway, I know I've learned new habits. At the market today after work, hungry and tired, I indulged and bought a bag of gluten free ginger snap cookies. Opened them in the car, looked at the serving size, and only ate 5. One serving. Really. There was a time I would've eaten half the bag on the 7 minute drive home. Progress!
Because I'm doing this challenge, I logged my food today even though it seemed to have been a disastrous food day. Found out I'm way UNDER my calories so far today. No wonder I've felt crabby and irritable! Knowledge is power!

I'm here to try and stay on track. I need the motivation to stay on track and stay at it. Now is a harder time just because it's cold and I want to curl up on the couch and not move. More Veg and less carbs will keep me from feeling sluggish.

I'm here because the January challenge is nearly over and I do better with the lifestyle change when I have a little more to think about! This will get me through another 4 weeks of actually having to attempt to do better. I've been at this for 3 months, and I've lost about 1/3 of the total I need to lose; this is just one more way to motivate myself to keep going.

Trying to find the trigger, motivation, to get back on track with my weight loss and healthier eating. My knowledge is adequate, but I do not always act wisely when consuming food. Sugar has been addictive, especially the past 6-9 months. Sharing my story, and reading others, is helping.

Hi everyone!!

The reason why I joined this challenge is to get my diet back on track after the holidays. I want to incorporate more veggies into my diet. I already exercise enough and if I can get my diet cleaned back up, everything will fall into place and my last 15 pounds will come off that much easier! Good luck everyone!

Hi! The reason I joined this challenge was to not only loose weight (that would be great), but to really focus on eating healthier to lower my cholesterol. I know there are other challenges on SP with the "cholesterol" challenge as a goal ... and I will probably join them too, but this was a good place to begin!

Happy Sparking!!

I am here to be more honest with myself about tracking and staying within my calorie range for the day-- no more sneaking food, grabbing little bites, and thinking it doesn't count-- it ADDS UP. Plus, I have a milestone birthday coming this year and I want to get there with a healthy, happy number on the scale!

I'm here because I need to break this year long plateau I've been on. I lost 20 pounds when I first started on SP but have not been able to lose any more. I've been doing all the things that are on the action plan for the last 9 months and need to find something new to work with. Adding exercise didn't work either. I can do just so much due to the pain I have everyday. I also want to boost my energy levels. Really need to do that.

Yeah, you do have to feed them, but you can make delicious healthier options, maybe? If they're hungry, you can make pizzadillas with whole wheat tortillas, marinara, and either veggies or turkey pepperoni, or pizza roll-ups in the microwave with those same exact ingredients. Trust me. If teens are hungry, just like if younger kids are hungry, they'll eat what you give them, and dammit, they better like it! LOL!

I am tracking my food and eating two healthy portioned snacks a day. What I do need to do is to eat more veggies. While I do get in my five a day, I could always think of ways to get more and in a greater variety......:)

I'm here because I need to change. I have been a memeber of Sparkpeople for a long time and actually weigh more than when I started. I think it would have been much worse if I hadn't been a member but...

Anyway, big trip planned for March and I just want to feel good about myself when I am living in summer clothing, so I am using the date as motivation.

My biggest problem is that I have a perferct weight family. None of them struggle with issues, and with two teenagers in the house, not buying some kid friendly food doesnt' work. I want the kids to all hang out at my house and if you want a bunch of teenagers to hang out, you have to feed them.

I'm here because I feel like this is my last chance to lose weight and feel better about myself. This July I will turn 67 years old and I've been on some type of "DIET" since I was 16. I'm tired and about ready to give up trying. I need to give it one last shot because I feel like crap. I'm hoping to get a little support and feedback from this group and this challenge. I've been reading some of the posts on this site and everyone sounds really helpful and caring,

Welcome! I, too, have issues eating in the evenings. I've found that it helps to brush my teeth after supper, and then just have a glass of water handy. I also wanted to share an article that I found on SP about that...hope it helps!

Thanks for starting this! Good job on wanting more for yourself and your children! emoticon

I guess I am here because I want to gain control over my eating. I know I feel full and lose weight when I eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins...with healthy fats. My trouble is that I also like to eat goodies! Because I am a short girl there isn't much wiggle room in my allotted calories. By the time I eat the foods to nourish my body properly...well...no room for treats!

I know I can fit small treats into my lifestyle...but I want to teach myself to fuel my body with good foods and enjoy how my healthier body feels!

I am here because I keep finding myself going over my range mindlessly. I track my food and am committed in the mornings but then in the evening I find myself binging. I am hoping adding more fruits and veggies thru the day will help fill me up and I won't binge. I also think I need to connect with other people like me. I don't have any spark friends and maybe that would get me on track accountable and encourage me to stay on track!

Kudos to you, Abi, for taking control of your lifestyle and trying to be a better role model for your kids! I know how hard it can be when you're a busy mom, but you'll get there!

I'm also here because I need some accountability; I feel like I lose a pound or two, but then a week later have gained it all back (and then some...). I'm here to try to FINALLY get on the right track--by finding time to exercise as well as eating healthier. For me, the biggest issue is portion control and late-night snacking...

Thanks Abi!
In my tracking I have realized I'm horrible at fruits and veggies..they do fill you up more, causing less caloric intake. That's going to be my goal for February...increase Fruits and Veggies!
Good luck to you as well...we'll be each other's cheerleaders!

Why am I here???

Well for starters my diet is my main down fall of this life style change. I have no problems with working out but my diet is a different story. I have tried many things but I just haven't found what works for me. But I am NOT giving up!

I am hoping this challenge can help me get on track.

As many fresh vegetables as you can manage! Your body does need SOME carbs like that which is in veggies and fruits and some fats, like that found in fish, nuts, and seeds.

I am desperately trying to lose weight, get fit and become more healthy....problem is I am going in the wrong direction. I have been tracking faithfully now for all of January, working out at least 4 times a week and have managed to gain 4 lbs! I know muscle weighs more but I think my problem is CARBS! They are not my friend. I am trying to find a low carb low fat diet...Any suggestions!

Feeling old...and aching is hard. I am there and that is why I am here. This time, I want to me more involved in Sparkpeople...and really do it instead of putting it off.

Applause on helping your kids build good habits. I wish my parents had...but that was then this is now and it is up to me.

My name is Abi, as I stated in the intro forum.
I am here because I neeeeed to be healthy. I am tired of feeling like I'm old. I am only 35. My joints should not hurt but they do, from all the years of obesity, which came from years of not eating mindfully, from years of eating highly processed foods, stuff high in additives, chemicals, refined flours, and refined sugars, and not caring about nutrition. Even when I've eaten less, I've eaten a great deal of less-than-nutritious foods.
I do not want to pass those disgusting habits on to my kids-my babies-the reasons I am still alive. My daughter, Lakeiah(say luhKEEyuh) has been having issues with her weight for a couple years. She's 10 and a half. She is NOT obese by a long shot, but she is overweight and uncomfortable with herself, because kids are cruel. When I get my Total Gym within the next couple months, I am going to teach her how to use it and we can take turns working out. I want her to be healthy and I want her to be comfortable with herself.
My son, Kegan (almost 7) exhibits nearly all the symptoms of ADHD, and I know that a diet high in refined flours and sugars, artificial flavors, and artificial colors can exacerbate such a condition. I don't want to label him, but I do have to have a serious talk with his pediatrician at his well-child visit. If I learn healthy habits, I can pass them on to him, which can help control some of the symptoms.
I am here so I can have more encouragment to live well and be well and teach my family to do the same.
