Thanks SOMAR - Another thing I have been realizing this week is that putting all my planned food into my tracker first thing in the morning really helps! It is partly psychological because I know what's coming in that next meal.

I'm new to this challenge and like someone else I struggle to get the last 5-10 lbs. (mostly belly fat) off. I definitely need to get off the salt, so any suggestions there would be helpful. I'm tracking everyday and exercising most days. Thank goodness for it or I would be in far worse shape. I'm trying really hard to get through the holiday season without packing on any more weight!

I started this challenge the day after Thanksgiving so I can really concentrate on eating well between holidays. It seems one day of letting go and it is so hard to get back on track, for me. After having lost 30 - 35 pounds, I have been stuck at 5 - 10 above my goal for 3 years! I seem to be a waffle. Do great for a time, then just get sick and tired of messing with it - but I haven't ever quit, just lose my focus from time to time. These short term challenges seem to help me turn it around again.

So, my goal is to get back to my pre-Thanksgiving weight by Christmas - that's 3 pounds down.

A thoughtful conversation between friends.

Piglet; "Why, it's today!"
Pooh: "Oh, good. That's my favorite day!"

I am slowly taking weight off. It was so much easier when I had a job and biked to work daily. I am also struggling due to having to cook for my sig other who is not a veggie. Finding things he likes means I have to either make two dishes or sacrifice my goals. How does everyone else do it? I think that is my biggest hurdle, finding balance between us.

So my goals are to be able to have meals that both of us like that are healthy.
To find ways to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet and eliminate a starch heavy diet.
To find a happy balance between two food preferences.

My reason for joining this team is to get back to the reason I joined Spark which was to get healthy and to stay off meds.
Goals:
1. Work on nutrition as well as calories.
2. Think of snacks as a part of my daily plan.
3. Learn to eat new fruits and veggies.

Starting over again... went three days in week 3 of not meeting my goal. I thought this would be a snap. I am flabbergasted over how EZ it is to not eat veggies and still rack up a LOT of calories. When I do eat at least 5 servings it is difficult to go over the calorie budget--it's like it's all tied together. Veggies up, calorie load down--veggies down, calorie load up. Amazing!

I just have to budget more time for meals. I don't really like canned or frozen that much, so I am trying to use fresh, but I think I need to go the canned or frozen route as an emergency backup plan.

I want to be successful at meeting the smaller goal of this challenge (learning so much and enjoying the changes) so I can better meet the larger goal of getting to my ideal weight. Thanks to all of you for being here!

Hi I am new here. My goals are different to others, I think. My goals are to try to eat in the middle of my calorie range. Lately I have been 2-300 calories OVER my limits. ANother goal is to eat 5 freggies daily. I seem to be able to have 2 or 3 fruits but often go without any vegetables, like today. I also want to continue to work on 3 days of 10 minutes of exercise a day.

1. Make sure to eat enough real food during the day that I'm not hungry at night.
2. Premeasure snacks so they can be easily tracked, for example 1 oz dry roasted peanuts in a plastic pill ziplock (can buy at CVS or Walgreens).
3. Read the articles listed on this challenge as many times as necessary to learn better nutrition principles.

For the person who asked about exercizing with bad knees, shallow water walking is good, free weights for arms, etc. Also search Sparkpeople for low-impact workouts.

Hi, I'm new to the team. Here is what I'm working on this week:

1. Logging all of my food on SP
2. Getting more vegetables in every day.
3. Exercising at least ten minutes every day.

I have a bum knee and it's hard for me to do any jumping around cardio. If anyone can recommend a good low impact routine that doesn't include hopping, etc., I'd like to know about it. Thanks!

two main goals I am working on
1 is portion control. good except having less at dinner, I think.
2 eating too much munches after 6pm.

first one I think I do pretty good on. i really don't think I have too much and I only have one helping now where I use to eat 2.
second one. this one my worse. eat supper about 6pm, then its the time of day were I spend hr with hubby before he goes to bed. alone I seem to want to have my cups of tea and munch on something till I go to bed. usually apples and peanut butter, popcorn, blueberries and little whip cream. all ok things but usually one after another. just pure habit. it was my time of the day to sit and relax after work. now retired cant seem to break habit. did play canasta on pogo with my sister and a friend last night for an hr. and a half so I didn't eat anything. oh well I am working on it.

keep on trucking

I just re-started yesterday, even though I've been a member, quite honestly I never did anything in the past.

My goals:
1. Drink water (I really lack in this area)
2. Fill my plate with veggies (I love veggies, but love carbs way too much) - visually have veggies be 3/4 of the plate
3. Have 1 snack in the evening (evening is very difficult and I eat nonstop even when very full)

For love and long-life. God will give me strength

MOONYOGAGIRL - servings for things like bananas and corn are by size. So look at the size of what you are eating to get an estimate of what the calories will be. Looks like you are doing just fine to realize that not all things are equal.

GRANNIEC1 - Looks like you've got a good plan going for your goal!

Plan: 1) to start adding the vegetables to my plate.
We don't often have veggies because my husband refuses to eat them. I love veggies and fruit!
2) to pay more attention to the time of day even if I need to set a timer so I don't skip lunch
3) to replace unhealthy snacks with a healthier version, veggies/fruit
4) to continue documenting my intake
5) to incorporate more exercise into my day

Plan: eating 3 servings of vegetables und 2 of fruit
I never thought this could be so hard :-(
one of my major problems is estimating servings. Is a banana one or two? would tomato soup count? corn?
I have read on SP that potatoes and lentils dont count emoticon

I want to form a new lifestyle instead of merely losing weight. I prefer to eat my way to better health over restricting my intake--which has never worked for me. For years I eliminated fat, restricted calories, ate like a bird and drank protein drinks to maintain my weight and it wrecked me. Eating was the enemy and I love good food. This challenge is exactly how I want to live and I look forward to 5 servings of vegetables a week--I mean a day! Boy, old habits might be harder to shake than I thought... emoticon

Hi All. I am coming back to this challenge as a redo. I signed up for it when the challenge first came out but then I did not complete it. My goal is to complete this challenge no matter how imperfectly I do so. And I just might lose some weight and develop some good habits in the process.
Here's to a good first week for all.

You got all the right ideas to get veggies into your day! Keep it up!

I made a chili this weekend that was something that I couldn't figure out what I forgot! It was more like bean soup than chili. Last night when I laid in bed I thought... "I can fix that and make it bean soup and add cabbage and carrots!" That's just what I'm going to do today! I'll let you know how it turns out!

Thanks Somar and Becky! Tonight I had fried cabbage and onions. Yesterday I had onions and tomato in my sandwich. All my 47 years I hated onions and tomato's. But since I cut out sugar by 95% and reduced processed foods that contain sugar or sugar substitutes, they don't taste so bad. In fact, I'm starting to like them.

I really appreciate the support! But once I'm comfortable with the challenges of week 1, then I'll move on to week 2.

Car, it's good to prep the mind and make goals!! Good job setting them and then taking steps to make sure you reach it by adjusting your perspective...like your thoughts about the scale. Then putting in a plan of action...such as not taking bites. I'm wishing you excellent success!!

Lose 20#, don't quit if I don't like the scale. Be positive. Ask myself at the end of the day, if I treasured the hours given to me or wasted a day. Don't take bites of food. Be happy.

Bluecount, hopefully these challenges will help get you over the hump. I was having a tough time too and I found that I needed to make some adjustments.

1) stop eating after 8 pm
2) stop raiding the fridge at midnight
3) stop having just a bite of this or a bite of that
4) weigh and measure EVERYTHING out. If it couldn't be weighed or measured or had a nutrition label to be able to track information, it didn't go in my mouth
5) drink, drink, drink water!!!!!
6) reduce sugar and sugar substitutes by 95%
7) sleep at least 7 hours (if possible - I get insomnia)
8) add more fruits and vegetables
9) add fitness

But I didn't know what I needed to change until I started being honest in logging my food and fitness. I didn't like the "honest mirror" but it was vital to make change.

Anyway, just some ideas that may or may not apply to you. Just throwing things out there to help out.

Stay strong!

Sounds like you went through a lot and have really had a terrible time of it! I'm glad that you've got yourself back on track! Sounds like you are all set out to be successful! I know that you can do it! Because those sound like really healthy goals you have set out for yourself!

Greetings Team Mates! My goal is to reverse my previous eating habits of starch and meat. I used to love eating healthy foods. In 1999, I had a valve replacement surgery that was complicated by hospital error. It created damage and I ended up on coumadin. The protocol is to eat the same amount of Vit K foods each day. Greens were particularly troublesome. I could not find a dietician who could calculate a safe Vit K diet for me. I tried hard to find that expertise. The whole experience, at the hospital, was similar to a marine in combat. I survived, with a bad dose of PTSD. I did therapy, which was effective but my weight ballooned up from 160 to 210 because I was AFRAID to eat green foods. So I didn't. I developed an eating disorder. This July I went to the Cleveland Clinic, had a procedure that basically repaired the subsequent damage from the first surgery. I CAN do anything now (exercise) and I am on Xarelto now. This challenge not only helps to reestablish good YUMMY eating habits, but I have started cooking again with a sense of pleasure rather than a sense of depression. I love to cook again. Even more I love to eat my fill with vegetables and green foods and I am HAPPY AGAIN. This challenge is about change and my goal is eat healthy every day. Good bye sugar, good bye bad poor eating habits, Good Bye fair health. Hello Sweet fruits, lovely fresh greens, nuts, berries and HELLO good health all the rest of my days. YES feels so good! emoticon
