Been using Mint or Peppermint along with fruit in Smoothies, know their not a veggie but at least getting used to something other than fruit alone. Thought about making some Italian ice with a few of the smoothie flavors but have not risen to the challenge as yet. Did find a favorite smoothie I like with peanut butter and banana and at times strawberries. Looking now for a few AA's that I can use for toppings on popcorn.

LindaF49, this list below of the 14 most potent AA foods (taken from the video) might help you focus on what you want to do--give you a place to start small. If you're wanting the most benefit, think about combining 3-5 things off this list into a salad or smoothie or breakfast. I could almost live off this list with the addition of tomatoes and flaxseed from the full food list. (at least for a while in the spring and summer).

For example:
tea, fruit salad of blueberries, redgrapes, orange sections,(add edamame if you wish).

or tea with lemon, spinach salad with turmeric, artichoke, parsley, edamame, roasted garlic and broccoli. (I love this with orange sections but someone in this thread didn't like to combine fruit and veggies??)

or tea and a smoothie of strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries (parsley if you wish)

Top 14 AA in potency (from video)
___________________________

1 soy extract
2. artichoke
3. parsley
4. berries
5. soy
6. garlic
7. red grapes
8. brassica
9. citrus
10. lavender (someone asked what you would do with lavender. At my health food store, they sell it in bulk and tell my most people who buy it are making a tea blend)
11. green tea
12. turmeric
13. tea
14. tea
15. vitamin E (I know, not a food, and the slide didn't let us know his food source)

To find out if you like any cheese on the list, what about asking for a sample in the deli? At my Walmart, I walk up and say, I'd like 1/2 pound of Jarlsberg Light, Please. And they say, would you like a sample?

I never do because I already know what it's like, but I'm thinking it would be a good way, if you take your DH with you and you both sample plain Gouda and also my favorite: Smoked or Smoky Gouda.

I don't know how the price compares, but I love the babybel Gouda individual pkg. I just went ahead and bought it, and it very quickly went to a cheese that I wanted another pkg. the next day. So I have to be careful with that one, but I think I like it better than Jarlsberg, or even the Smoky Gouda.

Jarlsberg is a Swiss cheese, and the Lite i buy at Walmart doesn't seem to melt very well nor does it have a strong flavor.

I guess right now, I like a cheese that is going to melt on a tortilla wrap when I toast it in the oven. And if I'm spending calories on it, I want to taste it. So for me, gouda is like a mild cheddar or Jack cheese.

And finally, remember you don't have to exclude all other types of food. If I weren't happy with Jarlsberg or Gouda, and I wanted cheese, I'd probably be choosing one I knew I liked already.

I have enough other choices to include in my menus without worrying about just one thing.

Both family preference [mainly DH plus visiting DD] but financially cannot just clear the room and start over...that is why I so want to understand clearly the AA foods so they are purchased...

Example...we eat a lot of cheese ... gouda is 4x cost of good cheddar on sale so I need to learn #1 Will I enjoy gouda? develop taste for it? Need it or not eat cheese?
#2 Will DH eat gouda? enjoy it? Is it worth the price? Can I find it for less, on sale, locally?

Are you purging the things you don't want to eat or do you need to keep them around for family? It's just me, so I can get rid of it. Usually donate unopened things to a food pantry.

Otherwise, if you need to keep them, you could separate them out to their own drawer or shelf and label. Snacks could go in a plastic bin that they would learn is for them. Just sneak in some of your healthy ones. Maybe they'll try them.

Today's smoothie half for supper, half to frig for breakfast :
2 sup water [Going to start using some tea in place of water to get more synergy]
___ 60 gm frozen banana __I love banana wish it was AA
AA_70gm blackberries fresh organic__I love all the berries!!!
___75 gm kiwi __not a favotiire but got them on sale and need to use them up
___50 gm spicy sprouts [alfalfa, radish and clover]
AA_75 gm kale organic
___75 gm frozen mixed romaine salad greens
___15 gm chopped dates [using up as sweetener to avoid sugar
AA_Dash of ground ginger
Learning what I like and using up what I have and planning how to replace the Good foods-but-not-AA from our storeroom will be a challenge bit by bit purchase by purchase. THis is a bit overwhelming when combined with giving up all sugar too and the label reading for that is so time consuming.

I use my Ninja for smoothies, nut spreads, malts, smoothies or oad powder. Sometimes I'll mix my Mug Cakes in them as well. Also when ready in a hurry will use my bullet.

What machinery are you all using for your green smoothies or green and colorful (with fruit)?

And a thought I had while I was reading the thread: You really don't need to combine fruit with the greens. I think most people do that to add flavor to make something new palatable.

Michele, my recipe for tomato juice: In my nutribullet, I put everything that I like in tomato soup. Sometimes I even heat it. So I use tomato, celery, parsley, onion or chives if they are in the garden, roasted garlic, black pepper, fresh basil. Sometimes I put a couple leaves of rosemary and thyme. I whirl it a minute. Let it sit about 10 minutes to meld flavors, whirl again and drink, or heat and drink. You said you are into V8, so you could actually all all the veggies on the label.

I've been working hard at learning to really LIKE green smoothies over the last couple of months...Today's:
Kale [first ever!], romaine lettuce mix, black berries, kiwi, pear walnut, dates
That is a repeat combo!...some have not been as good and others better...I really like beets in several mixtures...

Yes, salsa is the same principle.
The thing is that I use to have a very non-healthy breakfast, like hotcakes swimming in butter and syrup, with bacon as extra (Yummy). That was the main reason why I decided to substitute with the green smoothie. Later on, I was glad of my decision because now I'm integrating more greens to my "change of lifestyle."
My problem with the salsa is that I can't eat it on its own. I have to use it with Huevos Rancheros, for example, and those are not very tasty if I don't eat also refried beans. No, no, no, too many calories.

Michele, you made a green smoothie! Good for you. emoticon . Mint, according to me, is an herb. So just keep working on it. You can try a little of cilantro, or a little or parsley, but not all at once. Later on you can try adding to your fruit smoothies just a handful of spinach. There's a good video that can give you some hints:

Yep, they differently are and haven know that since the past 25 years. Rapid change is not a virtue of mine. Takes me longer for acceptance. Have tried the green drink from a Naturalist and never made it past the first sip. Tried some fresh mint last night, not bad but not a veggie I believe. I'll get there, I have no reason at present not to gradually work into it.

Michelle, start easy. Is like when I fed my kids, when they were babies. I started putting veggies gerber hidden with the applesauce.
You can start doing your fruit smoothies with 1/4 cup of spinach, for example.
Juices and smoothies are very different. The smoothies are keeping all the nutrients and the fiber.

Please don't think that I use all kind of fruits and greens at once. This morning, for example, I put some chunks of pineapple, orange and apple that I had previously frozen.. For greens, I used baby greens mix salad, 2 leaves of collard, and a chunk of avocado.
The reason that I am drinking green smoothies is that, according to Jeff Primack (you can watch his videos on Youtube), most of the phytonutrients lie inside the fibers of the veggies and fruits. He says that when blend them, the phytonutrients are liberated.

Salads with fruit I have no problem with, it is the idea of drinking vegatbles amd making them into a liquid drink. Even 60 years later, I can remember the TV commericals of Jack Lalaine (?) and his Juicer. Tried his carrot juice, that was the first an last time. It's basically turning that vegetable into liquid myself. Love Tomato Juice, V8 and V8 Fusion, they are made when I buy them. Now if I had a recipe for making Tomato Juice, I probably would give that a try for starters.

Michele, here's another way to maybe look at it/think about it. Have you ever had a cabbage and carrot slaw made with apples? Or apples and raisins? Or maybe even pineapple? I make that sort of thing often. I also just made a quinoa salad that was full of oranges, cranberries, raisins, and celery and broccoli. If you put the right combos together fruits and veggies can go great together. Now I personally just do not want to drink mine. I like to chew too much! LOL.
Hope this helps you wrap your mind around it.

Start small, Michele. Do your fruits or whatever you usually put in one. Then add a little spinach if you have apple in it already. I think they really complement each other. And the first time I did it, I told my twitchy brain that it was a green apple. emoticon

If all those fruits an veggies are used, that definitely more than 2 AA foods. Still can not get used to veggies in a smoothie.

Be a little patient with me. I've just pasted from my blog.
I am going to find many green-smoothy-obstacles in my trail to loose weight.
Since the beginning I found my first obstacle in my path to reach my goal. The looking for solutions taught me that this was going to be the routine if I really wanted to loose weight.
After learning about the great benefits of the greens and green smoothies I decided that having a green smoothie every day for breakfast was going to be the first step in my journey toward reaching the weight that I wanted.
Oh my God! When you see those glasses with a green liquid, you imagine that is so simple to just drink the thing, BUT NO, it's not that simple!
After the fun part of shopping the ingredients, you get home very excited to give it a try. And that's when you enter the mined hard work part. Wash, cut, measure, item by item. Put everything in the blender, then taste it. Make some changes because it's so bland, bitter, sweet, thick, thin, etc. Finally you decide to drink it and get over it. You're not done yet. Put leftovers away (1/2 banana, 3/4 apple, 1/2 lime, etc,) and clean the mess.
Just after this first try, I was ready to quit. But what kept me going was that I have decided to do it when I joined SP.
Oh well, how did I make it work? By doing some prep in advance. This let me prepare my green smoothies in a blink. I'm kidding, not that fast.

Preparation in advance.
a) Shop all the greens, herbs, veggies (like cucumber and celery), and fruits that you will use in at least a week.
b) Wash everything. Put the greens and herbs to dry in a colander.
c) If you have citrics, peel them, leaving the white part (albedo is the name of the white part). I discard the peel of the orange because I have read somewhere that is not healthy.
d) While the greens are drying, cut the fruits and veggies in chunks. Include avocado, cut in 1/8 pieces. When you cut the avocado, cut the seed also (it contains soluble fat).
e) Now you put pieces of fruits (bananas, apples, pineapple, grapes, strawberries, melons watermelons, etc. you name it) and veggies in a cookie sheet. Put them in the freezer for about 2 hours. Don't worry if you let them in the freezer overnight.
f) Put the greens and herbs in a towel and roll. Put the towel with the greens in a plastic bag. Refrigerate the greens and herbs.
f) Put the fruits and veggies in freezer bags. Put the bags in the freezer.

Preparation time.
a) Pour 2.5 cups of cold water in a 4-cups measure cup. Put the fruits of your choice until the water reaches the 4 cup line.
b) Put the fruits and water in the blender.
c) Measure 1.5 cups (or 2 or more, according to how much you can stand) of greens and herbs well packed. Put in the blender.
d) I add ginger (of course frozen) and chia to my smoothies.
