I am reading through a book entitled The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life by Rick Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen, M.D., and Mark Hyman, M.D. This morning's reading had some very encouraging words about gratitude.

"God designed us in such a way that gratitude brings healing.

"A Yale University research study evaluated more than 2,000 veterans between the ages of 60 and 96 to assess which traits helped them age successfully. Gratitude and purpose were the most significant traits associated with successful aging. Your attitude matters.

"Another study, from the University of California - Davis, examined the effect of a grateful outlook on psychological and physical well-being. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions. They kept weekly or daily journals to write about hassles, gratitude, or neutral events...recorded their moods, coping behaviors, physical symptoms, and overall life appraisals. The grateful group exhibited the most heightened well-being."

"Gratefulness actually helps your brain work better. Psychologist Noelle Nelson in her book The Power of Appreciation in Everyday Life described a study where she had a brain SPECT scan twice . The first time she was scanned after thirty minutes of meditating on all the things she was thankful for in her life. Then she was scanned several days later after focusing on the major fears in her life. After the appreciation exercise, her brain looked very healthy. The scan taken after she focused on her fears looked very different. Activity in two parts of her brain had significantly dropped. Her cerebellum completely shut down.

"The other area of Dr. Nelsonís brain that was affected was the temporal lobes, especially the one on the left. The temporal lobes are involved with mood, memory, and temper control. Problems in this part of the brain are associated with some forms of depression, but also dark thoughts, violence, and memory problems. Practicing gratitude literally helps you have a brain to be grateful for."

"Other researchers have also found that people who express gratitude on a regular basis are healthier, more optimistic, make more progress toward their goals, have a greater sense of well-being, and are more helpful to others. Doctors who regularly practice gratitude are actually better at making the correct diagnoses on their patients."

I am slaying dragon after dragon!

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 KJV

And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness sake [for what is right], you are blessed. And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.

There are so many things that inspire me to be grateful, but the one I'll pick today is the video Kindness Boomerang. It inspires me to not only be grateful but also to be kind.

Here's a prayer, called "Metta Prayer" --- it inspires me to be grateful.

May all beings be peaceful.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings awaken to the light
of their true nature.
May all beings be free.

Wishing you some sort of success every day, and the ability to always see your blessings.

Kathy - Great video, indeed, even though I do not consider myself religious (I claim spirituality).

Because my soul's inner connection is all about the natural wonder around us, I will share a very simple quote that I love:

Nature is painting for us,
day after day,
pictures of infinite beauty.

-John Ruskin

Yet, if we are not cognizant of what is around us, and open to the beauty with both searching eyes and a grateful heart, so much is missed!!!

A friend of mine posted this on facebook....I found it incredibly moving. A glorious way to start off the Christmas season...

Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, it is still worthy of watching...

Mine today is a quote:
It is literally true, as the thankless say, that they have nothing to be thankful for. He who sits by the fire, thankless for the fire, is just as if he had no fire. Nothing is possessed save in appreciation, of which thankfulness is the indispensible ingredient. But a thankful heart hath a continual feast. ~ W.J. Cameron
