Hi, everyone. I started a new topic....JAMMIN THROUGH JULY.....since it is no longer June. I hope you don't mind, JJ, since you are our fearless leader. I have posted messages on other team members' pages, encouraging them to join our conversations. It was a pleasant surprise to find Kaylison here this week.

Hi, Kaylison! Welcome back, and congrats on baby #2.

Had a great day today with food, and okay with exercise. After parties and being out of town, I have lost the 4 pounds I gained, so I am pleased.

I'm loving this 4-day weekend my husband has! Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather!

I hope everyone is having a great Fourth! I was up early by accident (couldn't sleep past 4:40am), but got to see the early morning sky, which is always fun and get some plants sprayed for insects before the sun was on them.

Watched fireworks in Davenport last night, but wasn't too impressed. They billed it as being the best ever in the QC, and I think Bettendorf's are always better. Still, the ones they had were pretty.

It's a 4-day weekend at our house, which doesn't happen very often. It's going to be a challenge staying with my normal meal plan today and tomorrow because it feels like it's the weekend. I allow myself food and drink freedom on the weekend.... Got to watch what I'm doing!

Happy Fourth to you all!

I'm back on track today with food and exercise. I'm glad about that after my weekend. Today I had places to go, things to do. Tomorrow I get to stay home and focus on our work here. What a beautiful day, though! It was great to be outside when I could. I hope you all had a good day!

It sounds as though everyone is enjoying an adventurous summer, Erin starting her new business, JJ building a bike, Judy travelling to Chicago, and Michelle avoiding the computer. Hey, it's too nice outside to be on the computer!!!!!!

What a weekend to spend in Chicago, though, with both the excitement of the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup and the Gay Pride celebration taking place. My brother-in-law works at a bookstore downtown Chicago, where he said the noise of the Gay Pride parade shook the buildings. You would expect the hockey fans to be louder, wouldn't you???

Did anyone participate in any of the local festivities here in the Quad Cities this weekend? Outside of the farmers' market I avoid crowds.

Back from a weekend in Chicago with friends. Lovely weather, but we didn't manage to have a peek at "The Cup"! Shoot! Had some wonderful food and beverages, though, so now have to pay close attention to my meals. Exercise good, though, with lots of walking.

Now we're just relaxing, enjoying this beautiful Sunday evening. Good luck with the bike stuff, JJ. I don't bike at this time, but it sure sounds like you'll have fun once you get your bike ready for riding.

Michelle, how are you? Haven't heard from you in awhile.

Hello Erin! Welcome to our group discussion. MKelly is my Co-team leader and has been making a new post each month so make sure that you look for the new one in a few days. Yes, I saw your post and I got your email. I have been busy trying to get this bike fixed but I still have to get tires and tubes for it. I will let you know when I get it fixed and working. I am sorry I didn't get back to you on your email. I have talked to my father in law about the shirts and things but when I do, I will get back to you. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Thanks for posting.

Hi JJ,

This is Erin from Bettendorf. I started a new topic about needing some brainstorming from the team here. I told them I started a new online business about coming up with some ideas regarding encouraging words, motivational quotes, inspirational sayings, graphics, etc. all relating to goals, weight loss, health and wellness, anything that might help others dealing with loosing weight, positive things. I told them that SP might be a good website to start with. I took your suggestion and came to Jabbering topic. I did email you again the other day. By the way my husband and I love to bike ride and we have bikes. Maybe sometime we can get together and ride. I work during the week. Maybe on the weekend? Let me know.

Thanks,

Erin - eh932011

Well update for today, I am in the process of trying to get a bike to ride. I have a friend that has one but not sure if it can be fixed or if it would be better to get a new one. I will update as I figure it out. If anyone else has a bike and possibly like to get together and ride bikes let me know. Maybe we can start a bike riding club.

Your team leader

JJ, I think it's great that you struck out for the walk knowing you might end up taking the bus back home. Lot's of people would have stayed home. That's the kind of determination we all need. I'm sorry you're having that painful problem. I think you might still notice some improvement as you continue to lose weight, but you may be right in that weight is not the only problem. Hopefully you'll feel better as time goes by.

I sure wouldn't want to be caught on one of the bridges in a storm. I'm glad you didn't encounter anything bad while on it!

Today I didn't eat at all, except for a latte, until about 5pm. I had a dental appt this morning, and went right from that to a relative's cataract surgery that was 3 hours late. I had to go to the grocery store after that, so didn't get home to eat anything until about 5. Then it was Girls' Night Out in my neighborhood at a neighbor's house, where I ate off the diet, but only a tiny bit of food. I did have 2 glasses of wine, though. I think I did ok overall for the day, but I don't really know. I'll be back on track tomorrow.

Time for bed now! Tired! Have a great Friday!

Yesterday, I went for a walk. I walked about a mile and I was doing good, but as I turned around to walk home I started to get shooting pains from my hip to my knee and had to catch the bus the rest of the way home. I felt stupid but I knew that if I didn't get on the bus I was not going to make it home. I have a pinched nerve in my hip, but without insurance I can not get it fixed. The doctors at CHC just keep telling me to lose weight and it should release on its own. I don't think it is going too though as I have lost about 50 pounds since it started hurting and it is only getting worse. Well maybe one day I will be able to get insurance and get it taken care of, and hopefully it is not to late.

Yeah those storms were crazy! I went to pick up my husband from work and we got caught on the Centennial Bridge when it rolled in. We didn't have any damage here, but we got lucky because usually when ever there are storms like that with the heavy winds we lose our power everytime. I am hoping that they stay calm today as I can not afford to lose my power today either. Hope everyone is well and stay safe!

I haven't stuck a toe outside today. Is it hot and humid? I don't need firsthand experience today! I'm resting the injured toe joint and catching up with a bunch of paperwork, which I hate. Got to do it, though. I hope you're all having a nice day! Looks like cooler weather for the weekend. How about those storms yesterday? Did everyone escape damage? (We did.)

Yes, the new fridge is here! It came late Friday afternoon. I am so glad we didn't have to wait until today to get it. All food is in except for a few freezer things stored at a friend's house, and all the coolers and the little dorm fridge have been "dismantled" and are put away. I'd rather not have to do that again if possible. I know one's inclination is not to rush out to buy an expensive appliance just because one feels like it, but I'll much prefer that to what I just went through!

While I don't want a deluge, I'll take the rain we're getting. I don't have to water my containers, and we get some precip that we need. Some of my grass was starting to look brown! Can you believe that after all the rain we've had?

I'm back to mostly normal, too, with food. I was off last week due to the availability, etc., but plan to do better this week. Exercise, not so much. I thought I had a broken toe, but the doc told me this morning it must be just joint/tendon trouble caused by wearing some shoes I normally don't wear several weeks ago. I'll stick to my PT core exercises this week while I'm wearing the surgical shoe. I love wearing the shoe! ;)

Have a good day, everyone!

I won't know until later this afternoon if the fridge will arrive. I sure hope it does! I am happy to see the rain this morning. (I can't believe I'm saying that!) I won't have to water all my containers now, which is okay today. I didn't sleep well again (about 5 nights in a row, now), and was up from 4-6 before falling into a sleep filled with dreams, so no real help there. Watering all the pots just didn't sound too exciting!

Have a good Friday!

We're SO glad the fridge things didn't happen during the grad dinner. I don't know what we would have done. If we're very, very lucky, we may get the new one tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed.

I'm hanging in with respect to food, but not as good as I want to be. Once the fridge thing is over, I'll get back on track.

On the bright side, my sons put in the a/c in our kitchen window, so it's SO cool in here now! We have a big, old house, which means: no central a/c. Window units are a pain, but it's what we live with.

Hoping my Friday sees a new, big fridge in my kitchen!! Happy Friday to you all!

Isn't that the way it works, Judy??? Refrigerators never die in the winter when you can just shove your food in a pile of snow until you get a new one. I still miss my old refrigerator, as our new one is energy efficient and doesn't seem to hold as much.

Aren't you relieved that this didn't happen a few weeks ago during your graduation celebration???

A quick hello to you. I'm MIA due to a failed refrigerator on Friday. Trying to keep up with the altered food storage and prep til the new frig comes hopefully on Friday. If not then, not until MONDAY! I spend a lot of money to wait all this time to get a new one. Doesn't seem like it should work this way. Take care, I'll be back as I can. Meals suffering a bit, but not too badly, and I'm not beating myself up while we're off kilter.

Nan, I figured that the Y cost more than planet fitness, that is where I used to go but due to not having the money to continue, I had to stop my membership. I do not have health insurance right now so I can't used that either. I have been to sunset marina but like I said, I don't get a good walk in when i walk by myself. I don't know where Ben Butterworth Parkway is. I would like to join the y as I know that they have classes like aqua aerobics that I could do easier as I have problems with my heels and knees. Hopefully one day I will be able to afford there membership. Thank you for the info.

JJ, one advantage of being old is that senior discounts are offered everywhere. My monthly fee at the Y is $31.50, and if I convince my husband or any family member at our address to join it would be only $12 more. Check out TWO RIVERS Y website for detailed information. Some insurance companies will pay part of the fee as a wellness benefit. However, throughout the year there are free weeks offered for people to try out the equipment and see if they want to join. That's what I did, but my daughter helped me get comfortable, as she had worked there as a wellness coach last year.

Some of my friends have joined Planet Fitness in Moline on Avenue of the Cities. The fee is only $10 a month, but frrom the sounds of it, there are only machines available. I like the walking track and strength training circuit, which somebody said is like Curves.

Meanwhile, we have so many beautiful places to walk around here. I love Sunset Marina and Ben Butterworth Parkway, where I walk with my daughters and granddaughters. My biggest obstacle is consistency, in that I never know from day to day if and when I am able to have time for a walk. That's what drives me to the Y first thing in the morning 3 to 5 times a week.

Hello Nan,
What is Mobilfit? I do not have a membership anymore since I am not working and have no money! I have been trying to get out and walk at the park by my house but I don't do well walking alone. I want to get a group together during the day but everyone I talk to works during the day. Maybe someday! How much is the Y now???

Thanks, Nan :)
I'm keeping my eyes to the sky too--my daughter has oral surgery tomorrow in Davenport (and we live in Maquoketa) --my best friend lives in Dav, so we are planning to go out to dinner with her somewhere tonight and stay at her house, so my daughter can get an extra 45 mins snooze time in the AM :) annnnnd...I get to hang with my best girlfriend tonight :) She has teased me in the past--when they first moved home to the QC's after being in Wisconsin for several years--every time I would visit, we'd get a nasty thunderstorm or tornado like winds :), so...it's par for the course that I would be planning to come tonight and we are looking to get some nasty storms.
Stay safe everyone!

That was the word my husband woke me up with this morning. Now I hear it from Judy. Do these weather reporters just make up things??? Most of the time it seems they just make up the weather forecast.

As we ponder about "derecho" our friend Michelle is racking up the fitness points. Way to go!!!!
I listened to your interview on Sparkpeople radio last night, Michelle. You did good. I would have been stammering for words, but I guess you know your message by now.

JJ inspired me to join the Y. A year ago she invited me to be her workout buddy at her gym, but I just wasn't ready yet. Having never been to a gym, and absolutely embarrassing myself during a stress test a few years ago, I didn't want to repeat the experience. The y mobilefit program is helping me get off the couch.

Hot today! Also, the threat of strong storms, a "derecho". I do not remember ever hearing that term before today, even in my meteorology course in college. Apparently it was coined in 1881, so maybe I've just missed it. Guess we'll see if the nasty storms come to pass.

Totally went off the wagon last night with food and drink. I'm back on now and planning to stay on the rest of the week. Hopefully I haven't done too much damage!

I hope you're all having a good Wednesday, and hope we don't get any damaging storms. Some rain so I don't have to water my 40 pots would be okay. (What am I saying?? I now WANT rain???) Until tomorrow......

Experiencing plantar faciita within a few months after retirement, I have changed my attitude about shoes. Flip Flops haven't been a part of my wardrobe since Girl Scout camp, where we were required to wear them in the showers. However, I wore cheap tennis shoes and flats at work, which I'm sure caused my heel pain. I have been relying on those Dr. Scholl arch supports for relief. Consequently, I have not physically participated in Race For The Cure in a few years. How I envy runners and walkers who have the stamina to join the festivities.

JJ, when I did participate, I never joined a team. In that big of a crowd you tend to flow through a variety of groups as you walk, meeting so many interesting people. Since I don't like crowds, I stay in the outside lanes, enjoying the encouragement of spectators.

No racing for me of any kind until I get this heel under control. I'll be satisfied listening to and reading about all of you who are able to do it! My heel is better, but if I'm on it too much during the day, it still gets quite sore. I think eventually it will settle down since I have a new orthotic device that seems to be very comfortable. If it doesn't, I'll go back for another shot.

I haven't been outside today because I'm working on my vexing problem of my third-party calendar/contacts/memos/to-dos program I have on my phone. The native calendar program doesn't work well, so I'm left with a third-party product that is supposed to sync well with my computer. NOT SO! I have struggled and struggles with it, and still I get duplicates, deleted data, birthdays shifted by a day, etc., etc., etc. Oh, how I miss the Palm days!

I have gotten in a bunch of my PT exercises, though, and will be satisfied with that if I don't get outside to do any gardening.

Hope you're all having a terrific day!

I don't participate with a team--it's just me and my best girlfriend--we sign up individually and just complete it together--
It's so inspiring to see all the warmth and honor given you you courageous survivors!

Hello Nan,
Glad to hear from you again also. My husband and I have been fishing at Sunset park in Lake Potter. Sometime we fish in the Hennepin Canal in Milan. Sunset is a good place for kids to learn how to fish, but I would probably wait until the water goes down a little bit more. I would have them bobber fish for blue gills. Hope this helps!

Talk to you again soon,

JJ

@ MKelly I am glad to hear that you was able to attend Race for the Cure. I wanted to participate but I couldn't get a team together in time. As a 4 year Cancer survivor I would like to participate in things like that but I don't really know anyone to make a team.

How nice to hear from JJ again. The vanilla and water method of keeping those pesty gnats away sounds good. Where do you and your husband fish? We want to take our granddaughters fishing this summer, but don't know where to go. They are 6 and 3, so I want it to be safe and productive. If they don't catch anything they might lose interest. However, if they do catch a fish they might be totally grossed out! emoticon

We wanted to be outside so badly Saturday night, that we tried burning our pile of brush (and all that grass I pulled out of the perennial beds--done by the way!!) thinking that would help keep the gnats away--not unless we were sitting practically IN the fire :)
Great day for Race for the Cure--I heard this morning that they raised over $250,000 and more than 8,000 runners/walkers participated in it. Fantastic!
My official time: 44:08
Had to walk at least the first mile, because it was so crowded--not even a brisk walk :)

Hello Judy,

Yes I use the regular McCormick's Pure Vanilla. The clear vanilla is an imitation and does not work as well for the spray. I have not tried it full strength by dabbing it on. I mix vanilla with water and the water dilutes the color so I don't get the color stain on my skin. I wouldn't wear light colored clothes though as it might stain them. I can't wait for the gnats to be gone, but until then I will continue to use my mixture. Hope this helps!!

JJ

Just wondering if it will rain today. I hope not. I am looking forward to the day when I can dig in the garden and will get dry earth rather than mud! I'm enjoying Sunday and hope it's a long day! I hope the rest of your are having a happy Sunday, too!

Thank for the vanilla info, JJ. Do you use dark vanilla, and does that color your skin at all? I ask because a friend of mine mentioned using vanilla but said she looks for "clear" vanilla so she isn't dotting herself all over with a dark colored liquid.

My husband heard that the gnats are supposed to be gone in a couple of weeks, which will be nice. I just don't know if we can all stand them until then!

Hello to let you know a little about the vanilla thing. My husband and I use it when we go fishing. One of the old timers told us about it. There are several recipes but I use water and pure Vanilla extract in a spray bottle. The gnats and mosquitoes will fly around but do not land on us. The only thing is that if you are outside for more than 45 minutes to an hour you might have to put more on. Make sure you use pure not imitation as the imitation has sugar in it. I am trying another recipe today with vanilla, water and witch hazel. I will let you know how it works. I usually get bit every time we would go fishing but for the last week I have not gotten bitten once.

Hope this helps!!!

JJ

The sun is out. I can't believe it. I thought it was going to be cloudy all day again. I'm happy that we get a break from both clouds and rain.

Many errands to do today. I hope everyone has a great day!

Hello everyone....

First, let me say I know nothing about birds and cherry trees! I can't even begin to imagine what a headache that must be as one tries to get some for pies! I have enough trouble with ground squirrels, regular squirrels, bunnies, etc., with plants, let alone, food.

Tonight is my second night out in a row. Last night we had such a good, fun, relaxing time, but I ate and drank too much. Not LOTS too much, but still.... I'm not really sweating either of these dinners, but I do regret that my weekly loss will be affected. Oh well, I'll just have to make the following days good ones.

Michelle, you're so right about the awful gnats. I can hardly stand to work outside with them. They're in my mouth, ears and nose constantly. Some say vanilla or vanilla creams are good for repelling them. I don't know, because I don't have clear vanilla (don't want the dark stuff daubed all over one's face, arms, legs,......) or vanilla creams. I have just been toughing it out. Also, if I went around smelling vanilla all day, I think even I would want to eat sweets (and I am a savory lover)!

I'm looking forward to a more relaxing weekend. Hope you all have good ones, too! Maybe some more gardening is in order, and maybe we'll actually be able to do it in something other than mud!

I've heard that old compact discs might be effective--hang them like ornaments in the tree?
Maybe they are no better than the pie tins tho

Glad to hear that your graduation party was a success, Judy. I thought about you as I sat in my back yard soaking up some sun. It was a beautiful day.

So, ladies, do you have any suggestions on keeping birds out of a cherry tree? In the past I have used aluminum pie tins and stuffed animals, but the birds just sit on them while eating cherries.

Judy--glad your party went so well--I do grad party number two a year from now :)
Have gotten so much planting/weeding done this past week, and I love it--the gnats are terrible tho!
Helped my next door widowed neighbor plant flowers yesterday and visited with her--she is so sweet!
