They need to ban that roundup crap that is killing them and also all GMO's because it has pesticides in them.

Don't cross the pollinators: Starting July 1, they're protected by law! Gov. Mark Dayton & legislators enacted 2 laws this spring unique among the 50 states. The first prohibits labeling plants as beneficial to pollinators such as bees, ants & bats, if those plants have been treated with & have a detectable level of pesticide that is lethal to pollinators. MN is the first state with those types of laws!

Yep. Hard to believe that one of them costs $100,000! The people who buy that one must REALLY love chickens.

Do-It-Yourself Recycled Spoon Garden Markers

I got this in a Good Housekeeping email. Looked really cute and easy to make. You can probably find lots of old tablespoons and teaspoons at Goodwill, thrift stores, resale shops, and garage sales. And they look a lot better than using wooden craft sticks or Popsicle sticks!

slugs like beer too and if you put little saucers out there with the beer in it they will find it and then drowned in it.

Eggshells in the compost is great, I just find them so useful for the tomatoes, and encircling plants that otherwise get attacked by slugs (part of my garden area is quite shady and damp) that I keep them separate. My "white gold."

I did not know that but I put eggshells in the compost all the time. Had to train my son to put them in the container in the kitchen so that I can take it out when it gets full. I crush them before they go into the container because that causes them to break down faster.

Blosom end rot on tomatoes is caused by a lack of calcium and the egg shells can help prevent it. You can use them anywhere in your garden if you need the calcium, but tomatoes seem to need more than many other plants, which is another good reason to rotate where you plant your tomatoes each year.

Why just the egg shells for the tomatoes and not for all of the garden?

I found companion planting to be a real challenge and sometimes I don't want to give up a square where for more veggies just because a nice flower would keep bugs at bay. One way I have tried to overcome this is by using planters around the garden.

I like the book Carrots Love Tomatoes as well. There are many others out there and it's always good to check more than one resource as you will find that there is conflicting information. Also, in the case of marigolds and who knows what else we're not aware of, you have to plant a very specific variety to rip the benefits.

Good luck :)

Do any of you know a book that tells you what vegetables go together to grow? I saw it a long time ago but forgot the name of the book. Would like to get it so that I don't plant something that does not like its neighbor.

Hahaha, I love the "and how to follow it" part of the title of that one link, about creating a garden plan. I had a lovely, detailed garden plan, which collided with all the seed catalogs, nursery plants, internet ideas, and gardening materials that pushed their way into my backyard.
Is it really possible to follow a garden plan? A garden plan seems more like an evolving storyboard, rather than a plan, at least in my life. (After you getting foundation plantings done, that is.)

That's next on my list to read. I'd really like to know how to do that!

I found all I needed to make my drip irrigation at this web site: www.irrigationdirect.com/ I also bought it all there. It turned out perfect. It took a couple of hours to plan after reading about it and an afternoon to set it up.

This is a really good idea. I am learning about gardening organic and advice from people who have had success with it is a big plus. I'm more apt to listen to advice from some one who gardens than advertising claims on tv, radio or the internet.

I thought it would be a good idea to start a topic where we can all share some good articles we find on gardening with the rest of the group. There are lots of good articles on SP, as well as ones on the internet. Feel free to add any that you find to this topic.

Just type in the title to the article at the beginning of your message, then add the link to that article. To post a link on the message boards, you have to click on the "add a link" button above the body of your message, then paste the link into that box and add it that way.
