My husband and I live on a pretty tight fixed income, and so we have a difficult time saving. Whenever we go out to eat (once or twice a week) we take the money we normally would spend on the drink (coke/diet coke) and instead order water. We then put that money approx. $2.50 each ($5.00) in a jar at home. Each month we put that money into a savings account for something special. One time it might be home renovations, the next time it might be a trip, or we may designate it for Christmas shopping. Not only is it a quick and easy way to put a little money back, but it also helps me get in my required water!

I started putting $20.00 a payday into a savings account. I got up to 40, spent 20, and put 20 back in with a vow not to dip into it again.
Other than that, on my budget my goal is to buy as much as possible for my money. I have six kids at home right now and have switched this summer to putting cash in envelopes for my food and household shopping to help me stay in budget. It's pitifully low, only $100 a week. The envelope system is really working, though!

Hi: I am new to this particular board. I do like savings and I think most people do. The other day I went shopping and saved money at Macy's and was happy about that. My total savings was $16.35. I also went to Payless Shoes and saved there, too. Buy one get one half off. I was pleased. That savings was $16.00. I guess one can say we did not save. We just did not have to spend it LOL. It is great to know we can get sales. Many stores have the price check scanner. People do it all the time at Macy's and I do,too. It pays to ask someone or get the person at the register to scan your item. If the teachers are supposed to get a discount, then ask about it if you go to those kind of places. Happy shopping.
Take it one day at a time You can get motivated Keep the good attitude Your Spark friend, Cyrella

I would definitely ask them - it seems that they don't volunteer that information. Check your local area for Office Depot/Office Max ads this week too. Some of them are having penny sales this week. I know I'll be going. :-)

Wow 123Fit4me, that's amazing! I wonder if my mother in law can get the same deal since she runs a daycare? That would be great for me since I now have 2 kids starting school this year (got a kindergartener and 5th grader now - they grow up so fast!)
Went to Big Lots yesterday and got some new things to spruce up the house. They're having 50% off some home decor items and 40% off their Jennifer Something (can't remember her last name) collection of home decor. HUGE Living room rug, normally $300, got it for $180 HUGE cherry wood mirror, normally $130, got it for $65 Saved $185 and my living room looks so much more put together!

July 5, 2008 - Today I saved $113.72 buying items at 50-75% off (a calculator that was $59 to begin with at full price, a bowl, batteries, canvas gloves, pretzels, 3- padlocks, sharpie pens, 3 breathing respirators for my husband, etc.) at the grocery store and $19.11 by just having their store card. Yesterday, we saved $7.99 at Dennys for buy one get one free b-day lunch, then $10.78 with a free dinner for my husbands' b-day at a local BBQ. We go on our b-days and split the free meals. I took the day off Sparks but tried my best to still eat very reasonably.
We saved $200 by moving our stuff to a different storage unit; paid a neighbor teen $35 to help move the stuff. (Removed already from savings)

Produce in general is always the hardest to find deals on.
Went wedding ring shopping with my friend today for her fiance’s wedding band. I technically found the ring, so I’m claiming the savings for us. Wait until you see this… $432!!! It was 60% off, then an additional 30%. So….

Sun, 6/8 Went to the Flea Market for my produce and the bent and dent groceries. Most everything is about half the price of the grocery stores, so I'm estimating I saved $36 because that's how much I spent.
Team Total $36.89

We're all going to be busy this Summer, so I didn't want to inundate everyone with lots of things to track. Besides, Summer is all about having fun, cook-outs, and running around.
This thread is for anyone who is looking to save money this Summer. Whenever you buy something and get a great deal, post it. Then at the bottom, add your savings to the person before you to see how much money we can save this Summer as a team!
Team Total $143.46 + $23.68 = $167.14 ----------------
We'll start tracking now and finish on Sept 1st. Good Luck Everyone!
