This time the bonus will last a little over two weeks just because we're all so busy right after the holidays cleaning up or traveling, and then with New Year's festivities... So we'll keep it beautifully simple and yet so perfect with the Spark lifestyle ideas:
** The "Swap One Thing" BONUS Challenge **
What you want to do with this is to change one thing about a meal or your daily habits to make it healthier. Some examples would be whole wheat instead of white, an apple instead of a candy bar, baked fries instead of fried in oil, stairs instead of elevators, etc. And for Christmas (or your own religious holiday), make a traditional meal healthier. There's several alternatives to traditional holiday favorites on SparkRecipes.com or other sites on the web to help give you ideas.

To make it easy for me to track bonus points, please use a blue ribbon emoticon. Please only list bonus PTD in this thread and include them in your Total PTD in the main Christmas Challenges thread.

Hey Thyme, that was last week's bonus challenge. I'm just about to post this week's bonus challenge, which will actually last all the way through Christmas. This is the first time that I've been to this place. I missed out on a couple of weeks but would like to join you where I can. I'm a tad handicapped but I make up for it in other ways exercise wise.

The complex carbo are up my alley since I came from the South. Do you have a lot of challenges here?

Dumbbell Shrugs

I did this with 8lb hand weights and with a set of 10 hammer curls in between the two sets of 12 dumbbell shrugs. I really recommend using a mirror for this and watching w/ a side view b/c it can be easy to roll your shoulders. It wasn't terribly hard.

Dec.1st
Dumbbell Shrugs

Starting Position
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder width apart and your knees slightly bent. Hold the dumbbells to your side with your palms facing inward.

Action
EXHALE: Slowly lift your shoulders straight up, keeping your arms straight. Hold for 1-2 seconds.

INHALE: Slowly lower down to starting position. Try doing 2 sets of 10-12 repetitions.

Special Instructions
Do not roll your shoulders.

Muscles Worked: Upper back, Shoulders, Neck

Nov.30th
Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Starting Position
Sit on the end of a bench or use a bench/chair that supports the back. Hold dumbbells in each hand. Hold weights with palms facing out and elbows at 90 degrees, palms at shoulder level.

Action
EXHALE: Push weights overhead until arms are straight and in line with shoulders. Don't lock elbows completely.

INHALE: Return to starting position to complete one rep.

Special Instructions
If you experience shoulder pain, have palms facing in toward the body. Don't arch your back as you perform exercise.

*** Week of Nov.30th - Dec. 6th ***
This week is a little tougher. I promise this will be as hard as the bonus challenges get.

This week we're going to try to do Spark's Exercise of the Day. If you don't know where it's located, look to the right of your screen in that information column, and it will be listed. If not, you may have changed your preferences. Just scroll down that column to where it says "Customize Today On Sparkpeople" and check the box so that you can view the Exercise of the Day.

This changes daily, so you'll need to check it daily to get the points. Plus what's great about Spark's EotD is that it's a different muscle group daily so that you're resting the muscle previously worked. I encourage you to do one more set/rep than what SP recommends. But if you can't do that, just do your best and post about your success! And if it calls for equipment, feel free to substitute if you don't have it (chair for a ball, cans for weights, etc). Habanero peppers - cooked them whole in my chili. I didn't really notice a difference, but I didn't directly eat the pepper. My MIL did and she paid the price. I may use them again and just either slice them in half or poke holes in them and then cook them in the chili.

Actually a few months ago I picked up one of the microwave chip makers for $2 in a thrift store. I am trying to make something that resembles a potato chip with almost no fat. If I can do it with purple potatoes (more vitamins) or sweet potatoes I will be very happy.

The thing basically is a mandolin cutter that slices the potato thinly and then you arrange them on a thing that looks like an old school slide carousel which holds each chip apart and upright while you microwave them.

If I can get something my kids will eat as chips I will declare total victory and banish chips from our home forever. Low-fat, low cost chips with a non-fat dip would make both them and I happy.

I am not sure what I can try after sweet potatoes tonight. I will have to wander cup foods, I might be down to starfruit or exotic stuff.

I went to the store on Sun just for a few quick things (I finally made my list today - a little behind this week) and looking around, I have already tried everything there. I may have to go to a specialty health foods store.

I did purple potatoes, sliced them thin and microwaved them into potato chips, they were kind of leathery but one daughter ate them with dip. I will have to try them different ways.

I also ate a pomegranate, broke that baby open and ate the seeds, it was good. will toss some seeds onto a salad later in the week.

Did anyone try anything new yesterday? I missed it and I may miss it again today. I just haven't had a chance to get to the grocery store. I'm hoping to head down to Walmart tonight after I get the kids to bed to do some light grocery shopping.

Kerri, since I'm just making these weekly bonuses, I was going to do a challenge similar to what you are talking about except on Christmas. Like "Make a healthy variation of one of your favorite Christmas/holiday dish".

But we can make an exception of if you've had it once and it has been a long time (like when you were a kid and hated it, you may like it now). Does that work?

Could we also maybe add if we try something we've had before cooked in a healhier way since some umusual veggies or fruits might be expensive and we are here to save money also.
