I found them very helpful and easy to incorporate, hope we start them again.

I knwo these were started a while ago, but being new, I haven't done any of them. I really like the ideas in here, having a tight budget, and a growing boy....lol (19yrs old, and a garbage disposal.... lol), I found things I want to try. I am starting the jar for money saved from coupons and sales. I usually just left it in my checking account for other things. but I like this idea allot. I have also started the dollar a day challenge, that will be put in a separate piggy bank ( thank goodness I collect them....lol) and I am trying to organize my life and get the clutter out, so The pantry cleanout is also good for me. i have to thank you for these ideas. hopefully I will be able to incorporate them into my life... how did these challenges work for the ones who did them???

The most important things in life aren't things.

Our new challenge isn't until Sept 1st. But that doesn't mean it's not on everyone's brains. So...

Is there something in particular you need help in?

What have you liked/disliked about previous challenges?

Do you like the holiday format?

Suggestions?

#4 is an individual goal. You do have an option, though. Since so many people are doing the Summer Boot Camp, if you all want to do the same goal you can.

As for the 10 glasses of water, here's why we usually like to aim for 10. 64oz of water daily is an estimate based on the average size adult and their average daily activity. The "average" size adult being 130lbs. To calculate how much water you need individually, you take your weight in lbs, divide it in half and that's how many ounces of water you specifically need to not be dehydrated and to not retain water weight. You can also include sugar and caffeine free beverages into this amount. However not all beverages are created equally so water is most preferred for your daily water intake. Also, for each cup of caffeine you drink, you need to drink a cup of water. And when you exercise you can lose up to a full liter or more of water. So, to simplify things on what we think is the average person (closer to 160lbs), and to not make you guys drink a glass of water each time you have some coffee, tea, or soda, or 2 more glasses each time you exercise - 10 glasses seems like a more appropriate daily average for what we're all trying to accomplish. I learned all this from an article here on SP, but can't seem to find it at the time.

But I can also knock it down to 8 glasses if everyone has a problem with the 10 and that would still be a healthy daily amount. But I'd still advise everyone to drink more if they can. I drink over a gallon of water a day not including any glasses of coffee, tea, and milk that I may also drink each day. It was hard for me to do at first, but my body adjusted and it even cleared up some weird problems I was having (like a phlegm problem in my throat) and my skin is in great shape.

******Oh! And I also wanted to add, that I think that if we don't have a big enough turn out to split the teams by step counting or minutes counting, then I'll just randomly divide the teams and you can choose if you want to do steps or exercise minutes.
So please post if you'd be tracking minutes or steps when I post the initial thread either later tonight or first thing tomorrow.

i have read through the proposed new challenge and on the whole it is do-able. i do have a question about point 4, is it a team goal or an individual goal?

i am also concerned about 10 glasses of water. SP only requires 8. more only when doing heavy excercise. i have tried repeatedly to regularly drink 10 glasses over the last year and it just makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable.

i would opt for the 30 min daily cardio as i cannot figure out how to post steps on the cardio tracker.

Okay, I have a challenge outline for Father's Day. Read it over to see if you all like it. I tried to incorporate the Summer Boot Camp's rules while still keeping it flexible for anyone not doing the boot camp. The Weekly Choice Goal (#4) is also there for those of you doing the Boot Camp and wanting to do Coach Nicole's daily challenges. Or you may want to do something that would be a good habit that you don't normally do, like flossing, waking up early/no snoozing, no/less alcohol/smoking, using the stairs instead of elevator, etc. It's flexible and can change weekly. If this meets with everyone's approval, I will need a team captain for the 10,000 Steps Team. Again, try to let me know by Tues so I can get the team threads started for sign-up.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
~*~

Father's Day Challenge
This challenge starts Thursday, May 15th and will last for 4 weeks until June 11th. Then you can relax for Father’s Day weekend.

This will be a team versus challenge. Teams will be divided based on what you want to do for Goal #1 (30 min daily exercise team or 10,000 steps team).

Here's our weekly goals:
1) 30 min daily exercise (this can be cardio or strength training) or 10,000 steps daily
2) 10 glasses water/day
3) Weekly weigh in with measurements (we'll track Hips, Thighs, and Waist for points)
4) Weekly Choice Goal (You decide what you would like to work on and set a goal. This can be health or financial, food tracking, blogging, or even from another challenge you may be doing. This can change weekly or stay the same for the 3 weeks, your choice. If you want to include friends and family with this goal, feel free and be creative. Try to post what you are planning to do no later than the Wed prior to that week starting.)
5) Weekly Financial Challenge:
For these, try to share with your team what you did – it could be helpful to someone else.
* Week 1 (5/15-5/21) "Kitchen Clear-Out" – Use up all the old, nearing expiration items in your cabinets, fridge. This is for both food and other products (ex. Half-used bottles of cleaning products)
* Week 2 (5/22-5/28) "Protect The Planet" – This week’s focus is on things that save the planet and may also save you money. Try to do a different activity daily (Ex. Walk around your neighborhood collecting litter and sorting recyclables, walk/bike to your destination, save dishwater for plants, etc.)
* Week 3 (5/29-6/4) “Grocery Cost Cutting”- This week we’re going to shave a percentage off our food bill. Every family’s needs are different, so I want you to decide what you can do, but aim for 10%. This also includes eating out, vending snacks, convenience stores, and fast-food. If it goes in your mouth, try to save 10% of the total cost of what you normally spend. If you don’t know what you normally spend a week, estimate and shave off 10%. And record your spending to see how you’re doing.
* Week 4 (6/5-6/11) “Make A Healthy Meal Healthier”- For at least one meal a day (or all three if you can), change it to make it healthier. If you normally buy your lunch, pack it. If you usually eat white rice, switch to brown. If you’re having dessert, try berries in cool whip instead of cobbler and ice cream.

Here's How It Works:
It's a points based challenge. Everyone tracks their own points to contribute to a team average of points. Weeks run from Thursday to Wednesday, with posting on Thursday or Friday. Because we are trying to keep motivation high, and the group relies on each member to help earn points, we are going to do the following. Each week there is a possible 10 team points for participation. Each member that does not participate and weigh in on Thursday or Friday (no later) will cause the group to lose 1 of those 10 points. If any member does not participate 2 weeks in a row, they will be assumed to have left the challenge. Since team points are done on averages, members can come and go from the challenge at will. But please notify your team’s captain ahead of time so as to not hurt the team’s participation points. Here's how many points you can earn for each goal:

1) 30 min daily exercise/10,000 steps daily - 1 point per day, 3pts bonus for completing 4 out of 7 days (10pts max)
2) 10 glasses water/day - 1 point per day, 3pts bonus for completing 4 out of 7 days (10pts max)
3) Weekly weigh in with measurements - 1 point per pound lost, 1 point per inch lost. If a pound/inch is gained, add a point. Full lbs/inches only.
4) Weekly Choice Goal - 5 points per week
5) Weekly Financial Challenge - 5 points per week
6) Individual Bonus Point – If you get your weekly totals in before 12am Friday, you will get a 2pt bonus

Team captains will post their team’s totals the weekend after points posting day (Thurs or Fri). For each week, the losing team’s captain will have to buy the winning team a spark goodie. After all 4 weeks of the challenge, all team averages will be totaled to determine a winning team. Each member of the losing team will buy each member of the winning team a trophy or blue ribbon spark goodie.

And just like in the Mother’s Day Challenge, team trash talking is allowed so long as it remains tasteful and within the rules of SparkPeople, stays on the threads of the Nifty & Thrifty Team, and the Spark Pages of the participants. Remember, this is to be all in fun and to keep team comradery high!

Jenny, it's different around the country. I'm in FL and I think that we typically start a little sooner. My kids will be out of school from the first of June until about mid to late Aug.

I own but don't typically wear a pedometer. We can split the teams and have one team do steps and one team do miles. I can hop on my treadmill with my pedometer and figure out how many steps are in a mile (unless someone already knows?). So I'd honestly prefer to do miles myself, but it seemed like we had some ppl wanting to do steps, so I wanted to try to accommodate everyone.

As far as the money saving reward - the basic idea is to have a summer savings that works as a rewards system. A little extra cash. So Stephanie, if you already have a savings plan, just track your money virtually.

Hmmm, this may take some more logistical planning. Maybe I'll put together a Father's Day Challenge similar to what is going on now and have a Summer Walking challenge later.

i am up for the step count as i just found my ped.

now i sense that our summers are at slightly different times. so to keep things clear for me, our summer holidays in England start during the last week in July and the children go back to school during the first week in September. is that the same in America?
if not then i will need more specific dates to work from.

the above is even more confusing for me when you take into account the fact that i grew up in Southern Rhodesian (below the equator in Africa)and their summer holidays were in December and January.!!

Sounds great and good luck everyone! I am debating sitting this one out, I never remember to wear a pedometer... but if a team wants the miles I walk my dog, that I can probably do. Not sure about the saving part though, I don't get paychecks all summer since I don't put into a summer fund like most teachers, so I have summer money saved in an account instead, but not sure about building my existing savings anymore.

Okay guys, I think I've about got a plan for the challenge.

Since everyone may be popping here and there for vacations and such (and other challenges), I was thinking of keeping it simple and flexable. It would be a summer-long challenge. A race. There will be two teams. We'll start from a designated "spot" and "race" around the world by counting our steps. Each team will keep a running total of their steps and after reaching certain amounts, they will have reached different "destinations". For every so many steps you will earn a monetary amount (I'd like to discuss with you guys what is doable). Something like a penny a step or every ten steps. You'll put this money in a jar to save all summer. When your team reaches a destination, you'll earn a money bonus (to be discussed, something like $2 or $5).

There will be 2 parts to winning this challenge.
1) The team to make it to their final destination first wins the health
2) At the end of summer, the person to have "won" the most money, wins the financial

We could also do something similar to what we're doing now with the spark goodies. Whenever a team makes it to a destination before the other, the team that's behind buys the team that's ahead a spark goodie (maybe something related to the vacation destination?)

Let me know what you think about this and any changes you may want to make. I'd like to have the challenge outline ready by Tues night. This way I can post a sign-up for everyone to join on. Then I'll divide teams and have us ready to start after Mother's Day.
And if you think that having this go on all summer seems too long, let me know.

I can be up for anything but might start later... I joined Beach Body Bootcamp from soon until the end of May. I won't be able to do it quite every day due to class on Weds and lots at work, but I figure anything is better then none. So if a challenge here works around that, I can do both. Just kick me off the message boards sometimes, they are addictive (although I am getting better!).

Jenny, I can see that you would have a problem as for your grandkids, especially given their age. If they were near by like mine then you could challenge them to so many steps each day making it a game or seeing how many jumps they can do in one minute.

Is there a child in the neighborhood that you can do something with in lieu of your grandkids? In other words be a surrogate grandmother? Or maybe a day care center that is nearby. You can check with the director about doing a health activty one or two days a week or more with the older kids.

Anyone else have ideas that can help Jenny?

Yeah, I know Stephanie has her dog Tyler. Perhaps instead of making it a specific goal it can be something like "Spread The Spark Week" where you would influence someone to make a healthy change in their life, join you for a healthy activity, or to join Spark People. We could do one point per person "sparked" up to 5pts or so.

that sounds like a fun idea and a great way to have fun as a family. but we would need to have a variety of ways to report as not all of us have children or grandchildren near enough or old enough to take part. my grandsons are 2 years and 3 years old and they currently live a 6 hour drive away.

I don't know how well this will go over but since kids will be out for the summer, why not do something that gets the kids involved with what we are doing? Rather than have team challenges, those with kids and/or grandkids in the area can challenge them on exercise, number of steps each day, drinking water, creating new recipes, shopping goals....anything that will get a kid motivated to live a healthier lifestlye. The challenges can change each week to hold the children's attention span and give them a variety of activities throughout the summer. Most kids love to beat mom or dad at something so why not make it a healthy win where everyone wins in the end.

Each week a specific goal can be set and then at the end of the week (like we do now) report the accomplishment.

Ok...so that is my two cents worth.

Heather thank you for the food consideration. I can probably go heavy on the steps that week as there is usually a walk from the tent to the toilets. to the main meeting marquets, to the shop. in fact to everywhere. and cars are banned after the first day to make it safer for the children.

i do have a step counter.

1- individual challenge, with summer those of us with kids have lots of conflicting obligations so many can't commit to a team challenge.
2-Go through 4th, then we can do one from the 4th to labor day.
3- the "use up something" goal is a good one, it encourages us to go through our cupboards looking for stuff that might be old.
4-have one goal be "exercise outside" like a weekly goal of one exercise session outside. with the summer everyone should be able to find some comfortable time to exercise outside."

Toby has a good point about with it getting close to Summer, keeping up with challenges could be hard. So how's everyone's schedules up until Father's Day?

My kids are done with school on the last day of May, so there would only be a few weeks I'd have difficulty with. Depending on when everyone's kids are done with school, we could have the challenge ease up a bit for the last couple of weeks? Then the following challenge that would go until July 4th could be a bit lighter, as well as any other Summer challenges.

Thoughts?

Ooo, I like the spare change for each step idea. But here's a problem: Does everyone have a step counter?

And Toby informed me that he's going to be too busy to run a challenge team this time around. So we either need to do individual challenges, or if someone is willing to run a challenge team, let me know.

I think it would be a good idea to not use the same teams as we're using for this challenge. This way we mix ourselves up a bit and get to know our "rivals" and support them. This will also help newbies to the challenges not feel outcasted. I was thinking we could divide this time by birthdays or location. If the teams are severely lopsided, we could have volunteers to join the lesser.

I think Kerri's idea to shave 10% off groceries is a good one, especially with the rise in food costs. This will probably also make it more difficult.

Stephanie, lots of great ideas. I especially like the eco-friendly and healthy meals. Perhaps if we're doing a step challenge, instead of tracking cardio minutes we could have some points for strength training?

Jenny, when I plan the challenge (probably within this week), I'll try to make sure I don't make the last week of May too difficult food-wise.

I think the step challenge should be fun. You can add it to team challenges unders buccanairs steps
and hotties step. and we can each join the right team under team challenges and it will add up the steps for you. No reading thru all the post. :). We can also use our steps as a way to get to a destination by fathers day. So We can start from Toby's home town.. and the hotties can start from heathers home town.. and depending on the direction.. see where they end up. :)
You and toby always do well with the financial but a fun one could be spare change tracking. so we each have our own money jar and all spare change goes into it or each step we take counts as one penny and we add that to our money jar at the end of the day.
IM just rambling I don't know if any of that makes sense. Im running off 3 hours of sleep. lol I think I will go now.

I love all the ideas that I have read, and I am in for the July challenge! I also like the idea of the small Father's day challenge, maybe that could just be a guide or a first goal.

I do 10,000 daily at least 6 days a week if not 7 so I'm in on it. we could give points for days with 5,000 7,500 and 10,000 so those who aren't up to it can participate too. I like the hotties against the pirates. I better in groups.. I think more people would be in that way. People may drop off faster as individual if they can't keep up. but as a group both groups have a mix of walkers. I vote for the 4th of July. We can also give pts for days we bag lunch.

I'd like a forth of July one... I like teams so people keep me motivated, and along with cardio, I'd like to see 2-3 days worth of strength as part of it. So maybe 2-3 strength, 4-5 cardio days, and not sure what else. As for financial, something creative... create a healthy meal and share with everyone (must include 2 svgs veggies, 1 protein, 1 complex carb), create a way to reduce family expenses, drive less this week, healthy dessert (and breakfast!), do some eco-good, help others, etc.

Father's day could be a quick and easy individual one if people wanted.

Bernie, you can still join the current challenge. We do weekly averages to determine the team's numbers. So it doesn't matter if people join or drop out as they are available. The new week starts tomorrow, so go ahead and pick a team (Toby's Dirty Buccaneers or my Healthy Hotties) and join in. If you're find you like the team versus, let us know and perhaps the next one will be similar. It seems to keep motivation high.

Even though I'm new at this and late to get into the challenge, I'm really enjoying it. I've cleared out tons of clothing for a planned clothing swap, gave some to friends and donated some to charity. I've cleared and condensed files, cleaned out the freezer and small refrig., dug some old, withered plants from my flower beds and gave away about two dozen books. Great feeling! I'm already looking forward to the next challenge.

The final two weeks of our team versus Mother's Day Challenge has begun. The official last day will be May 8th, then we'll have the weekend of Mother's Day off to enjoy ourselves with our families.

But what to do then?
Another versus challenge? Or individual challenge? Which holiday do you want it to last until? Father's Day would be a challenge lasting about 4 weeks (or 5 if you want to include Father's Day). Then US Independence Day (July 4th) would be 6 or 7 weeks. In between those 2 we have the start of Summer on June 21st. Participation is key to success with a challenge, so I want to make sure that it's something that YOU want to do and that YOU want to and can stick with.

And don't forget that...

Yeah, I have to admit that part of what spurred this idea is that my neighborhood is having their Community Yard sale on March 8th and I've done my boy's rooms already. It's very liberating to clear out old stuff. Helps to get me thinking about how to improve. Plus I'm feeling a little stuck right now and cleaning up and clearing out could be just the thing to get my positivity up and excited. I'm glad you guys are excited about this, too.

OOOHHH I am liking this challenge.

I found a forgotten jar of enchilada sauce in my cupboard and have rediscovered that I like enchiladas.

Okay they are pretty bland enchiladas, black beans, maybe rice, tortillas, salsa, sauce, and maybe fat free sour cream.

My jar of sauce is now empty and the tortillas are gone, but I will move onto the next overstocked item.

So here's what I'm thinking:
A Sliming Down For Spring Challenge

Spring starts on Thurs, March 20th. So each week we identify something that is abundant in the house and "slim" it down - kind of like spring cleaning. The first week we scan the kitchen pantry/fridge. The second we work on using up that item/items and identify something in another area of the house, like the bathrooms. Each week we move around the house clearing out and using up so that we usher in Spring a bit lighter in stuff and heavier in money. Part of this can also be to have a yard sale or to donate things that we just don't need.

Then the other half of the challenge will focus on staying in nutrition ranges, water, and 15 min daily cardio with a bonus challenge and point for the Exercise of the Day.

If there's no objections, we'll start this up on the 19th. I'll try to post something on Sunday night or Monday and send out an update to the team.

Good one! Also, with taking stock, what to do with those unhealthy foods you have lying around. Eat them and plan your calorie intake carefully? Donate them? Hmmm....

I think, we should do the taking stock challenge in two parts: one week take stock and identify at least one overstock, weird, or near expiration item.

Then the second week, use the overstock, weird, or near expiration item.

Health: I need to start strength training! It has to be at home and I have the basics. I do not, however, have a normal table chair as I have stools.

Financial: Get creative in the kitchen! Take some inventory of what you have and find recipes that use those ingredients, essentially cleaning out your kitchen (even the bad foods, how can you incorporate them into your healthy eating safely??). You are allowed to shop only for perishables that are around the outer aisles of the store and can only spend XX amount for the entire challenge (between $2 & $3 dollars a day per person).

I knew people that spent $56 for Feb for 2 of them without using what they had! Its a bit extreme, but the use what you have method cleans out your kitchen, saves money, and forces you to think of new & creative non-processed food choices! Then you can carefully evaluate what you need to restock, and what you really don't need laying around the kitchen.

Oh, and by Easter works for me. Just let me know when it is as I don't celebrate it (I assume its around the school spring break, so that definitely works for me).

Just wanted to put a feeler out on what everyone is wanting/needing out of the next challenge?

After Valentine's, we have Easter on March 23rd - roughly a month and a half later. So I figure that would be the next holiday. Or there's also St Patrick's Day?

The health aspect of the challenge, I'm thinking we change it up a little and focus on something different. I need to work on tracking my nutrition, so I'd like to do that. And maybe 30 min of cardio 3x's a week, or 15 min daily. Another fun thing to do is to try and do the Spark Exercise of The Day. They change the muscle group daily and you end up toning your whole body through the course of the week. So I'm thinking those 3 things for our health.

As for the financial goals, I'm at a loss. Easter isn't always the most expensive holiday. I like Toby's exercise of us Taking Stock of our pantries, but that still leaves 5 or so weeks... So here's where I need some suggestions badly!

I'm with you...I just opened an ING account to start letting the money add up that I've saved from coupons, rebates ect. I had a bottle I was saving the change in. $800.00 is all I have in it but it's adding up again. Hopefully I can take hubby for a cruise some day. emoticon And maybe I'll actually look good by then.

I think a holiday to holiday challenge would be useful.

Thanksgiving to Christmas (or Chanukkah, or Kawanza, or Season's Greetings, or Jedi knights initiation ritual day, or boxing day, or etc......)

I would propose two challenges:

A Health/fitness challenge-

A financial challenge-

I like the idea of budget for the holidays, since many of us overspend on the holidays (okay I do and I assume others do too).

So I would propose for the financial challenge- a budget challenge: set a budget and track it for the holidays.

A health fitness challenge is a bit tougher to pull off. Really few people have the time or energy to increase the number of workouts this time of year and/or start a new regime. So I propose a once a week "healthy substitution challenge" once a week in the 4-5 weeks between Thanksgiving and christmas either make a healthier version of a holiday favorite, or choose a healthier alternative.

What does everyone think:

A dual challenge for the holidays:
financial: set a budget, stick to it and update weekly.
health/fitness: each week make or choose either a healthier recipe or a healthy alternative to a holiday favorite.

Toby

Hi everyone,

I think the holiday to holiday challenges are great. They really get me through when all I want to do is eat. Maybe we could do a Thanksgiving to Christmas challenge. Then we could do a new year to valentines day. What do you all think? It's great to be back.

For what is worth I like the idea of keeping a holiday budget and the food/fitness separate. I plan on doing the Black Friday thing so I am ready. Let me know what we are doing, I'm in. Thanks Ann

No foods that have more than 3 ingredients that I can not pronounce.

If an item has more than 10 ingredients it is too processed, I will not eat or buy the item.

Great ideas, Keri!

I'm thinking of keeping the money related challenges separate from the food/fitness challenges. To give everyone choices as to what they're here for. I really like the holiday budget idea. We can do that in December. Maybe like how we do weight loss goals, we can start by saying, "I want to spend $XXX this season on my holiday". Then how we plan to budget the money ($XXX towards food, $XXX towards children gifts, $XXX towards extended family, $XXX towards friends, $XXX towards travel, decorations, etc.) Then every week we can check in to see how much we have spent already and how much we have left.

I think the trying a new food or veggie is good.
Maybe a holiday budget. Mayve a food trying something new by food groups weekly under a certain amount of calories.

Hi Team!

The team is going to be having a few changes. One is that we're going to have this new Challenges Forum. I wanted to see what kind of ideas you want to see for our challenges. We can do fitness, food, and money related challenges - or any other that you can think of. We have both Thanksgiving and December approaching. Do you want to do weekly, monthly, or holiday to holiday challenges? I'd like to see us getting started on one by either Dec 1st or after Thanksgiving if we're doing a holiday to holiday.

So please use this thread for your ideas. I can't wait to hear them and start succeeding by challenging and cheering each other on!
