Well, the first episode was last week and I spent about 10 minutes of the commercials doing movement. I did standing crunches, danced, paced, knee raises, etc. Since I have a hard time with exercising, it was difficult to move through an entire commerical break, and by the time the show was over I was very tired. The commercials are around 17-20 mins total, so I didn't move the whole time, but I think this was good to start.

If anyone would like to help make out the list as I described below, I would appreciate help with it. Otherwise I might just stick with random movements or whatever I feel like doing at the time.

I think we could use more though. Don't want a single commerical break to happen without having something to do! hehe I think I'm going to watch some old episodes and see what I can think of.

So do you have any ideas of what event and exercise combos we can do?

So I came up with another idea, based off a recent dailyspark blog:
www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=the

parkpeople_commercial_break_workout

How about we work together and make up a list of things that when we see it in the show we spend the commercial break doing those exercises. Kinda like a drinking game where when you see something you take a drink, but with exercise.

For instance:
Damon without a shirt and/or pants is 10 crunches
Stefan jonesing for blood is 5 pushups
Elena playing with her hair is 10 jumping jacks
Caroline talking in a whining voice is 10 lunges
Bonnie casting a spell or using magic is 15 seconds of swimming
Anyone getting vampire eyes is 20 second plank
Anyone drinking out of a blood bag is 30 seconds of faux jumping rope

And so on. I think this could be a ton of fun. If we make a list of the exercises to print out then you can take a moment (like during a scene transition) to mark which exercises to do during the upcoming commercial break. This will also help keep track of what you did to track it at the end of the show.

What do you think? Would you be willing to give this a shot? What ideas do you have for common events on the show and/or exercises to do?

I hope you get involved in the challenge. It's a great way to multi-task with something you need to do and something you want to do.

Glad to see someone getting involved! Of course this can be done with any show or even in other parts of our lives (stretch while standing in line, tense and release muscles while sitting in stopped rush hour traffic, do short exercises while waiting for dinner to cook, etc) though this challenge will be just for TVD so we all are working with the same time frame.

I look forward to more people getting involved in the challenges!

I love that you are trying to get this team more active!! This is a GREAT tool to utilize in other parts of your day as well!! Why stop at just TVD?! :) I will definitely be participating in this once the season starts!! Thanks for the great idea!

To help our team become more active as season 4 nears, I'd like to start some challenges!

This challenge will last all through season 4. We love watching Vampire Diaries so let's combine it with some exercise. While you watch episodes of Vampire Diaries, use the commercials as time to exercise. The first commercial breaks are shorter with more time between them, while the last commercial breaks are longer and happen more frequently, so prepare for that! During each break come up with a few simple exercises you can do. Throughout the season you will see the number of repetitions increase as you get stronger. Here are some ideas to get you started, but you can choose any exercises you'd like:

jumping jacks
pushups
crunches/curlups
squats
lunges
bicep curls
tricep dips
walking/running stairs
walking laps from the tv to another part of the house (front door, bathroom, bedroom, etc - would work best if you have DVR so you can rewind live tv if you miss the first few seconds)

You can record this challenge in 2 ways: after every episode PLUS a summary after the last episode of the calendar month OR with just the summary at the end of the month. (This means the last Thursday of the month or a few days afterwards.) Tell us what exercises you did and how many repetitions you increased since the previous month. Anyone who posts their monthly summary will get a team goodie!

Don't forget: The total time of commercial breaks is about 15 minutes, so don't forget to track the exercises you did! 4 episodes in a month will give you an extra hour of exercise on your tracker!
