Yup definitely added sugars in some vinegar. Offtopic but added sugars - baking vanilla - if it is artificial and not the real deal, check out the ingredients. Caramel food color in artificial vanilla = sugar.

Thanks for posting that link, BossMare. I wonder about this line, "commercial balsamic sold in supermarkets is typically made with red wine vinegar or concentrated grape juice mixed with a strong vinegar which is laced with caramel and sugar." I wonder if that means there is added sugar in some vinegars. I never even read the labels before, to be honest. Sugar might explain why Mom's balsamic vinegar is so yummy to me.

For some interesting reading, go here:

Vinegars can vary in price, particularly with the balsamic. Huge difference in flavor between the cheapest and some of the more specialized spendy ones. I honestly don't vary mine up much so I use a basic balsamic, sometimes tarragon, red or white wine, or have made my own by popping in fresh herbs and garlic in a bottle and letting it sit for awhile. I actually like using your basic apple cider vinegar too for a few things.

Will be interesting to see if folks have any other favorites.

Do any of you have a favourite vinegar? Do you have a favourite brand?

I've noticed a huge range in prices for my favourite flavour, balsamic. My mom buys one at Costco that I'll have to check out. The price seems to be right and it has a fuller, sweeter taste than any I've tried before.

I'm really curious to try any vinegars that have a fruity flavour.
