Those are good ideas Irene...I am a visual eater too and think I'll use the one about putting a napkin on top of my plate when I'm finished eating......that would work especially well putting it over my grand kids food plates...I am always tempted to eat their leftovers....and I also like the one about tieing two habits together....have to see what I can do there....have a great day all.....

So I finished the book, and the message is the same, it is much harder to change habits than we thought. But not impossible!

So with eating, two things seem to help the most - making one small change, but sticking to it. I think of my mother, who over a number of years lost 100 lbs - what she started doing was when she ate, and didn't feel hungry any more, she covered the left over food with a napkin. (like me, she is a visual eater.)

The other thing is keeping a food journal. I think that recording your food on spark does that too. But what I am doing this month is writing everything down in a food journal. It makes you more mindful of what you are eating.

The other bit of advice is - tie the habit change to something else that you regularly do. So you are doing, if this, then that...... Maybe like, if after dinner each night you clean up the kitchen - you could make it - I clean up the kitchen AND THEN I go out for a walk (or do some other kind of exercise.). It doesn't have to be that, but apparently, tieing the habit to something else is what makes it more likely to persist as a habit.

So, I hope that this helps.

Looking forward to your input from that book, Irene. Its sure true that we pick up on phrases like the "21 days to break a habit" idea and then beat ourselves up about it when we don't make it work for us. Pretty sure I did that yesterday! I know, got to stop that.

Hmm, lots of talk about getting going with healthy habits here. Time for me to get on the bandwagon too. Maybe I need to track. I am doing better with exercise.

Meanwhile, here is my news - we need to stop beating ourselves up about our failures. Seriously. I am reading a very good book right now called "Making Habits, Breaking Habits: why we do things, why we don't and how to make any change stick."

I have just started it, so I haven't got to the "how to make any change stick" part yet - but the author is talking about how deeply ingrained habits are, and how they aren't easy to change. And how this whole 'it takes 21 days to change a habit idea is a lot of hooey. Anyway, I am really enjoying this book, and if I get any good ideas from it, I will report them to you.

I know exactly how you feel, AJ. I took the past little while off from worrying about what I'm eating and I feel much better about it now. I'm ready to start again. I think we all need a little break like that every once in a while - sort of like a vacation from weight loss...

Good luck Val. I am discouraged by my many failures these last few months. I think I will take June to re-tune my goals and plan for back-to-fitness. Someone here was working on a collage for that purpose but I can't remember who. Just wondering how that worked for them. Might be something I could try. My discipline and mind-set need recalibrating! emoticon

Hi, it's been a while since I've been here so I thought I'd see how you're all doing with your monthly habit changes. I even decided - just this moment, actually, that I am going to start tracking again as well as do at least 15 minutes of exercise every day. I just got tired of being so heavy and feeling out of shape when I try to do anything. I'll see how it goes...

Hi, there. It's been quite a while since I posted here so I thought I'd drop by for a bit. For the month of May, I've started playing on my Wii again. Every couple of days, I go down and play a few games on Sports Resort (Bowling, 3-pin basketball, Frisbee golf, to name a few of them). I've even got Evan coming down to play some of them! I also have Just Dance 4, which I really like, so I've been dancing a little as well - but those are by myself as Evan won't do them with me. LOL

I see you're all doing well. That's good.

Take care, guys - keep up the good work!

I'm inspired by all of you ladies. I've not been making any progress lately and I need to change that. I've been reading about mindful eating and have decided that will be my May goal. Too often I eat without paying any attention, at least until after the fact. For May, I am going to plan meals and eat mindfully.

Hi ladies...how is it going?....with our warmer weather and sunny days for May my healthy habit will be to get outdoors...it maybe walking or just relaxing on the deck...but I am determined to get outside at least for 15 minutes every day, hopefully more ......I was going over my past healthy habits and so far I've decluttered my basement, garage, started drinking more water, do weights at least 3 times a week, eat more fruits and veggies...and probably others I can't recall but I'm still not at my ideal weight.....so I better go over my habits and find out where I can improve....still on this journey of loosing weight I guess.....take care all.

My change a habit for May is to really stick to doing some kind of exercise for 10 minutes or more. Currently have a heel spur and though I have lots of energy inside -- haven't been able to walk as much....I also cricked my back, doing exercise....10 pin bowling of all things...that hasn't gone back in yet....I am determined to not give in or give up.

I have started using a stationery bike that has arm things that move back and forth....does not hurt my heel, I have been doing the upper arm part of kick boxing, I have been dancing somewhat to fast music more swing and sway and arm stuff. Doing some stretching and leg exercises.

Going for a laser treatment on my heel after work tomorrow. Third one so we will be hopeful that that does the trick. Got new orthotics and I am hopeful. I am not a quitter

Good evening everyone. I have been extra busy since last Friday, and this is not going to let up for the next week and a half. Sorry I have'nt been here.

Needless to say, that also means that I haven't been tracking. However, I have cleaned up my eating somewhat this week, so we will see what weigh in tomorrow brings.

Nice to see you here, Ann. Welcome. And it sounds like you are doing awesome!

Change a habit a month -- I changed a habit in March and that was to log in for the entire month and do full tracking as well as I could. I did it, I think I went 32 days in a row. Then I missed logging in the wheel for one day, so at first I got crabby about it, then I forgot about it.
In April, I have been trying to change the habit of not drinking water (other than about two cups) into drinking eight cups. I have been progressing slowly on this one, but I am definitely drinking more water.

Good Morning Ladies. Well, today is starting out okay, food-wise, and I guess I'll take that. It is nice out and I have a full schedule planned so I'm hoping that keeps me away from food or even thinking about it. I didn't sleep well last night - awake at 3:30, up at 4 because sleep wasn't going to happen. So I've already got laundry and windows done and now I am heading outside to rake. Sounds like the weather is turning again so today might be it for outside work for a while.
Stephanie, that diner sounds fun. Did they have a jukebox! emoticon
Irene - I like the hour by hour, day by day concept. I'm adopting it!
Val - yes, that's the problem, for sure. I 'choose' to eat stuff I know is not good for me and certainly not hunger-driven. It's a tiring, never-ending struggle but I am in it and won't give up. Sometimes, though, a break from it all is as necessary as picking up the battle again. Hang in there ... all of us.

I'm keeping up with the veggies and fruits...at least 7 of them a day combined...but I can easily over eat even when its just those items....we will just have to encourage each other and do our best this month...I'm loving the sunshine and warmer weather for now.....

nice to get the prep work done. :-) Your very own sous chef.

As for me - despite my plans, I am not tracking this week. I am eating more fruits and veggies, but no tracking - and I don't think the results will be good.

Well you ladies are the lucky ones....my dh has never been a cook...makes a great salad but do not ask him to cook anything....but he does great with the prep work when I do cook my big meals.......making a chicken pot pie today for dinner...lots of veggies in it and a salad will round out my veggie eating for today....my dh also cut up melons, strawberries and pineapple for a fruit bowl....so that's it for today....have a great day all.

Hi Val, Stephanie and AJ,

Yup Val, I am very lucky with having a cooking DH. And he has passed it on. Calgary DS cooks gourmet meals on a daily basis - for relaxation (!) after work (no kids) and local DS does a lot of cooking for his family - though a lot of what he does is bbq.

I am still not doing as well with green vegies as I should. But lots of root vegies again today (there were left overs) and reasonable fruit.

Hi, AJ, Irene and Stephanie,

When we were first married, my dh did a lot of cooking. He hasn't cooked much in years now. I wish he would. I get tired of figuring out what I can cook every day... You are so lucky, Irene.

Chicken and dumplings sounds great.

DH had dinner ready tonight. Lots of vegies - but all roast root vegies. which I love. But not a green vegie in sight. Can't complain though. He does do a lot of cooking.

Glad to hear the fruit and veggie plan is working out for you guys. I love them both and get an abundance of them. As for the sugar, once I cut myself off I am okay but somehow it just trickles back in again and I find myself hooked on more and more. I am getting much better at calling a halt before I get into real trouble and I am so grateful for that. I try to avoid the substitutes as well; like the wheat, I just don't eat them.
No problem, Val. Glad you are checking in on us.

AJ....yes hope you do well with the sugar free....I tend to use lots of Splenda and Truvia.

Irene ....I have been able to keep up with the veggies and fruits...(even though its only day 2)...my dh is very trained to make a salad with every meal we have at home....so I eat lots of veggies on home day meals.....its the eating out meals that I tend not to eat veggies or fruits.....will have to work on that this month and get into the habit....

Val hope you get sunshine and warmth this month.....we are having lots of warmer temps for now....

Take care ladies emoticon

Here's to lots of emoticon for you Val.

AJ all the best with your sugar free.

Stephanie, how are you doing?

As for my first fruit and veg day. I was good with fruit at breakfast and lunch. But DH made dinner - and we were in a hurry last night as we had a meeting to go to. No vegies. Yes it is possible to have a no veggies dinner. He reheated some jamacian patties we have (spicy ground beef in bread) and some premade perogies (more carbs and potato/cheese.) This is not his normal type of meal, but we were both short of time. He did apologise for so many carbs.

I am just off to the gym now, and then a meeting, and then work. And somewhere in there I have to fix my lunch and dinner. Sure hope I can get lots of vegies included.

No, AJ - I'm taking a bit of a break right now. I'm still checking in to see how you are all doing, but I think this winter has really got me down. Hopefully the weather will start to get warmer soon. At least - all the so-called "experts" are saying it will...

Good Morning! Sugar free so far and off for a walk this morning. Listened to the radio for a while to see what they would do for an April Fools story and it was pretty good -- announced a new auto environment tax on mileage over 20,000 per year. Some people bought it; it was quite funny.

Have a good day and enjoy your fruits and veggies ladies. Val, did you decide on something for the month?

Fruits and veggies it is for April....but I'm going to get smart about the fruits...I tend to eat bananas a lot and they are loaded with carbs and calories....glad that the spring time will bring in more berry type fruits into the grocery stores....those are supposed to be better for you.....thanks ladies for the suggestions..... emoticon

AJ...the suggestion for 10 minutes to myself is a great one too....a lot of time just be able to sit here and read the posts relaxes me and I feel better about the day....I seem to get so wrapped up with the grandkids.....but I really do need to make time for everyone else in my life....especially my 92 year old mom......

Take all and have a great day...its cloudy here today but mild ..... emoticon

Fruits & veggies are good. Or, you are so busy Stephanie, maybe you could just give yourself 15 mins a day to do something special to YOU.

Great news on your colonscopy results Stephanie!

Val, I need to do that decluttering too. But look at you - look at how much you have already done in the basement!

AJ, I have picked my habit for April too. I will be doing some kind of meditating with my zenhabits, but here, I have decided to concentrate on fruits and vegies. I have been getting a bit lax on that lately.

And again, happy birthday to your DH, Stephanie.

So glad to hear all went well with your colonoscopy, Stephanie. Bet your weight is down this week now that you are all cleaned out! Tough way to go but, along with the clean bill of health, it is another bonus. emoticon Happy Birthday to your DH and how nice of him to make you breakfast. Sounds like a keeper!

Enjoy your wonderful BC spring, Irene. I haven't been out there in spring for a long time but maybe one year I'll have to change that!

I have decided to declare a new, starting now, habit for the next month. I haven't lost any weight at all in March -- and gained 2 pounds in fact. I took a long, hard look at why that was and decided that sugar has got to go. Except for the April family Easter meal, no sugar until the end of April. I have a lot of fruit on the counter right now and will eat that and then limit even fruit to berries. I was simply getting too lax and need to tighten up the reins a little.

Have a great day, ladies.

Good Morning all.....

Just returned from my colonoscopy procedure and the Dr said all looks good...no need to come back for another 10 years....the preparation was the worst with the cleansing packets...that I do not want to do anytime soon again.....my dh made me breakfast when we got home so that was the best part.....with his birthday actually being today.....that was sweet of him.

Irene where in ON did you live?

AJ...that 8 week programs sounds great..that is something I could follow and will ask my Dr when I go next week for my final results on all my procedures from my physical.....

Hope everyone is doing well....we got a few more inches of snow today...but it was all melted in a couple of hours...take care.

AJ - yay to the signs of spring you have seen! I used to live in Ontario - til we moved out here 25 years ago. I did not love summer, but did really like winter. Fall was my favourite season. Ontario still tops BC for fall. But BC is gorgeous in the spring, and it lasts so long.

Thanks for the info on the 8 weeks - it sounds like a wonderful program! Good for you for doing this. It sounds a lot like what I am trying to do on my own (minus the chiropractic) bit by bit. How great to get it altogether!

Stephanie - thanks for all the enthusiasm for the next month! emoticon

Good Afternoon All. I'm excited today because I checked my flower bed (the only one right up against the sunny side of the house) and found SIGNS OF BULB LIFE!!!! I feel for the poor little sprouts in this cold but I was thrilled to see them, nonetheless.

8 Weeks to Wellness. It was run by a chiropractic care and wellness centre and included chiropractic treatments, massage, exercise, food journaling & nutrition advice, and meditation. I had never had a chiropractic treatment and was very leery about it but I was finally desperate enough to take action. Before I started, I had to see a doctor and have blood tests and then the blood tests were repeated after the 8 weeks. Basically I had two appointments a week for 8 weeks and committed to doing 30 mins of cardio 6 days a week on my own --- biking, walking, swimming -- my choice and also 10 mins of meditation daily. I also committed to following their food plan which was basic -- one week of very low carb to cut the cravings then just a balance of carb-fat-protein each meal and snack. There were protein shakes included in the program. At the appointments I would usually exercise with a personal trainer first, then massage, then chiropractic. Eight weeks was long enough to create some good habits and working with a personal trainer taught me a lot about exercise -- what and how and how much. I lost about 25 pounds over the 8 weeks but more important, I learned a lot about nutrition and exercise ... and that I loved massage. The differences in the blood tests results were pretty impressive too, almost every measure became healthier, sometimes significantly. I have pretty much based my eating and exercise ever since on the things I learned there. Here is a link to the program details: 8ww.com/
Irene, you are right about our short spring and I think this year it will be even shorter. Too bad because I love spring and fall and am no more a fan of extreme heat than I am of extreme cold!
Stephanie -- great job on your decluttering project. I envy your dedication to it. And thanks for the incentive boosts for next month.
Have a great week everyone.

Hi there ladies.....AJ I also would like to hear more about the Wellness program you were on....I'm having a really hard time this month with the bloating and puffy feeling I have gained weight because of it.....

Yes Irene our Ontario weather can change drastically in 24 hours.....sometimes our High for the day will be in the early morning hours and the temps will drop significantly throughout the day....and for once I have kept with a habit for the whole month.....and I'm almost finished with the garage......its taken a long time but I'm seeing progress.....

To all take care and have a great Mon......
