This week has been pretty good so far. I'm still doing the scheduled strength exercises although I've cut it close to midnight before getting them out of the way a couple of times. I don't want to skip even one as I may set myself up for falling off the wagon.

As for tracking, I'm not using the Spark tracker but I am writing everything down each day in a journal and using a calorie counter book for reference. This way, I see at a glance each day how I did and I put a red asterisk beside the food I could have done without that put me over the limit. It's still a higher/lower see-saw just yet; however, my goal is to keep it as close to 1,500 calories or lower per day as possible. Again, I'm trying not to miss a day for the same reason as the strength exercises.

With these two tasks, I can see weight loss success on the horizon. Why? Because of the consistency which is a big problem for me.

Keep on Sparkin team!!

I'm pleased to say that I got through another week doing all the scheduled strength exercises. Hopefully, in another 2 weeks I'll have ingrained a good habit as it usually takes about 30 days.

This week I must get some food tracking started, even if it's only 2 days worth and build from there.

Glad you had a nice visit with your sister Di. When is you surgery scheduled? Will you be laid up for awhile?

Today I got in a 50 minute walk by myself again, took all the donations to the Salvation Army, did the grocery shopping, lifted and carried two 40 lb. boxes of cat litter to and from the car as well as all the other heavy grocery items emoticon , ate lots of fruit and veggies, did my scheduled exercises followed by yoga stretches and am now ready to collapse in a heap in the lazygirl chair and read.

Today, I didn't get my regular walk in and no scheduled exercise was to be done. Had to take dh to the doctor's. What I did do was clean out 2 closets and pack up everything not being used for a donation. Our crazy weather went up to +10c today so I went out and washed the car as well. Ate an adequate amount of veggies and fruit. Another good day.

You sound like me Di--enough reading material to last for the rest of our lives. Instead of reading my book at night, I end up catching up on the paper or doing a crossword.

Monday: I went for a 50 minute walk on my own so I could go farther and faster. Ate lots of veggies but a little short on the fruit, did the scheduled exercises and extra yoga stretches as well. All-in-all, a pretty good day.

Trying to get organized. Lots of books have been left for a later time, to fine a home. I don't have any bookshelves so they have their own special piles. However these get to be too much and look junky.

Getting more exercise going up and down stairs getting the room ready for my sister. DH has used the room for a catch-all. Now these items need room to call home too...lol.

Your doing great Dotz, getting those steps up. Next, the cats will think you want to play and join in on the yoga mat.

emoticon I did it!! Finished up the strength exercises that I missed yesterday and completed the entire schedule for the week. For me that's a miracle. I did extra exercises afterwards as well as stretches. The two cats looked at me as though I was crazy as I lay on the yoga mat down at their level.

Next week I'll track the exercises again.

Hi Di,
Looks like you had an active and social day. Sure hope your surgery goes well on the 3rd. Will you be in the hospital long?

Yesterday, I got in about 90 minutes of cardio. Missed the strength exercises scheduled for yesterday but will do them later this morning. I was good with Monday and Wednesday strength and even did extra. For me, that's an improvement.

This morning I woke to the phone ringing....I was late picking up my friend to go walking--- asked for about 25 minutes. Like the good friend she is ....she waited for me. We walked 5 rounds.

I had lunch with another TOPS pal, had a great visit. Went on to get groceries; my sister arrives Wed Feb 1st.

My surgery is Friday Feb 3rd. Lots of running around getting paper at one office to be turned in at another. Need to see my Dr for pre-op history and physical. Then to pre admin for more paper, and blood work. Then early on Fri, my sister and I will go to the hospital, any test that was not done yet will be looked after at that time.

Have a great weekend.

Must be the weather Di. I rarely sleep well at any time, but this week has been exceptionally bad. Just had to have some hot milk and a Nytol to see if that will work. Going on for 1:30 a.m. and I'm still wired.

Today, I managed over 12,000 steps and did lots of housework tonight. Been sticking to the strength exercises this week too (it's a miracle). Made sure I had an an adequate amount of fruit, but could have done better on the veggies. Dh and I went to our favourite restaurant today for supper. We walked there and back (1 hour) to burn off some of the calories..

Wednesday, not sleeping well and felt lousy. Didn't go walking. 45minutes morning routine and extra stretches and band work later in the day.

Thursday, had Acupuncture treatment this morning. Very good one. Didn't get to play cards this afternoon, but got hair cut and it feels a lot better. Was getting way to long.

Will do stretches (lazy ones to wind down) before bed.

I thought you mentioned a fall last year with your cane Di. I guess it pays to do an inspection every so often on walking aids.

You really got a work out with 4 miles of mall walking. It's so much safer than taking a chance outside in bad weather.

Today, I did some walking at the mall but not enough to get this pedometer up to where I want it at the end of the day. I'll top up with some firming exercises later this evening to compensate for the lack of steps.

Steps today = 5,014

I had a fall last September while walking indoors at the Mall. The tip on my cane twisted and my weight was not well distributed.(between steps). The tip of the cane (on inspection, turned quite easily) I did not notice this dangerous fault.

Today (Monday) I walked in the Mall. It was a miserable day, falling wet snow that turned to ice on the windshield. Mild and very damp, made walking difficult with ice below the top coat of snow. Slippery driving too. The combination of sand and salt makes for such a mess.

I did 5.5 rounds which is just over 4 miles. Checked out several stores (Boxing Day...Month) for bargains.

Almost 13,000 is great. Sometimes it seems to take forever for the pedometer to reach the target number. Sure makes it seem like walking without one was a stroll.

This was a great day. I made sure that I did the strength exercises even though it took me until 9 p.m. to get them done. Followed up with stretches.

Been trying to get the new pedometer up to at least 10,000 steps. Had to go on two walks today to manage it. One walk for 45 minutes this morning and another one for 50 minutes this afternoon. I'm always moving around during the day, but this pedometer seems to like continuous movement rather than just any movement. I finished the day with 12,900 steps but really had to work for it. Maybe that's a good thing as it's pushing me to do more than usual.

Di, sounds like your grands are quite the athletes. It's good to see kids out there moving around getting exercise instead of being glued to their computers. You must be very proud of them and the outcome of their hockey games.

Yesterday, I went for a great 1 hour walk by myself wherever my feet wanted to take me. Unlike your neck of the woods, the sidewalks are all dry here so no fear of slipping and breaking any more bones. With your arthritis Di, you're smart not to risk going out in the cold and perhaps slipping on the ice. Was it you that took a tumble last winter on the ice?

I was wearing my pedometer all day yesterday and only chalked up 8,500 steps. Unlike my old pedometers, this one is stingy handing out those steps. I used to get 10,000+ with no problem. Maybe it's not the pedometer, but me that's slowing down. emoticon

Dotz, sounds like you found another good pedometer. May it serve you well.

Not even thinking of walking outside. Extreme cold the last few days and warmed up today
-1.1C, quite a change. Makes for difficult walking....slippery top layer is very dangerous.....hard on balance.

Got morning routine done, some stretches, and got to my grandchildren's Hockey game.

They won the tournament in overtime. Four on four and NO goalies. Grandson L 15yrs, scored 2 goals (including the winning goal). Granddaughter 13 yrs is Goalie on the team.

Tomorrow starts a new week.......have a good one. Di.

Di, I had one of the Omron pedometers that I purchased at Weight Watchers years ago. It was great and took years to finally quit. Haven't seen them since. This one is a Sportline and it has lots of bells and whistles, half of which I won't use. I just like steps, distance and calories burned. With this one I even keyed in my age. Although I only had 7,000 steps yesterday, I did do a lot around here catching up on unfinished projects including hand sewing.

Irene, until you know the results of your tests it's best to stick with just small exercise segments of say 10 minutes at a time. Better to be safe than sorry.

Welcome to the team challenge Thelma. I get encouraged when i read how others are doing.

Sounds like quite a pedometer, Dorothy. Mine is an Omron, count steps,. turn to miles/ km..when gate is measured.....calories burned......stop watch...and other;can't remember it all. I'd need to see the papers, don't know where they are. DH gave it to me for Christmas about 8 years ago.(or longer). Very good one. You Go Girl!!! emoticon

Hi Irene, hope the tests come out the way you want. I'm sure you will do very well with your planned routine. All the best.

Okay, I am going to get serious about exercise. Thanks to some medical tests I am undergoing, I know that I need to get serious - lose weight AND exercise. However, thanks to same tests, I do not want to overdo it until I get the results of the tests.

However, meanwhile, there are things I can do. My pedometer stopped working. We tried fiddling with it, but it really won't work properly. So #1 on my list is to get a new pedometer. This may not happen until tomorrow when hopefully the roads are more driveable.

The other thing I plan to do is 10 minutes of exercise a day. (in addition to all the steps I usually get on a work day). It doesn't sound like much - but it is a beginning, and until I get the medical results I don't want to do more than 10 minutes at a time anyway.

Irene in BC

Renewed determination. I WILL do this!

Welcome to the challenge Thelma. Looks like "Millie" the treadmill is getting a workout emoticon . You did very well with your exercise.

You too Di.

The pedometer I had before was a cinch to set up. With this new one I practically needed a degree and it took me a over an hour to load in all the features. By then I had lost interest in going for a walk. It's all set up for today so no excuses. I'll wear it as soon as I get up and keep it on until evening when I generally sit down to read for the night.

I've decided to get on the exercise bandwagon. I've always walked about a mile a day (good weather permitting), but now have a treadmill and a pedometer. Yesterday did a mile @ 2.5 mph on the treadmill, walked a mile and a half outside and according the the pedometer made 12033 steps during the day.
I also have a small workout bench and a couple of weights. I have to do some more learning about what that type of exercises I can do without hurting myself!

Finally remembered to buy a pedometer at Walmart this afternoon and came out of the store with just the pedometer. Will set it up tomorrow morning and start using it right away.

Got in 1+ hours of cardio today at the Centre. Only had breakfast about 9:30 this morning and didn't get a chance to eat again until 6 p.m. I was really hungry and of course, ate too much at supper. Tomorrow I'm planning on a nutritionally balanced good day.

Thanks Di.

I used to put my pedometer right next to the kettle before bed so when I got up and headed for my tea I'd remember to put it on.
Deep breathing is supposed to be very good for us. It helps with relaxation and curbs the craves. I have to consciously remember to do it as I'm a shallow breather.

Today, got in a 45 minute walk with dh this morning and some household chores this afternoon.
I'm very good with eating fruit, but the veggies often take a back seat. Don't eat nearly enough most days, then I go into overdrive and can't get enough. Definitely have a problem with consistency that needs to be worked on.

I like your new Avatar. A beautiful picture Dorothy.

Thanks for reminding me about my pedometer. I had put it in my purse...to attach it to my pants. I needed to take it out of my purse and pin it on now. My purse gets locked up in my car..................and I don't miss it til we are inside the mall and starting our walk.

Will be wearing it Monday.

Got my 45 minute routine done this morning and a few extra stretches.
Will be concentrating on deep breathing this coming week.

Those pedometers do seem to have a life of their own Di. Still haven't picked up a new one yet.

This week's food tracking was the pits; however did get plenty of exercise and am down 1/2 lb. It's a start.

Yesterday, I made spaghetti and meat sauce for supper. I made mine with 3/4 spaghetti squash and 1/4 pasta. It was delicious.

Managed to get a 50 minute walk by myself this afternoon. Although it was quite cool out there, there was plenty of sunshine and no wind chill to deal with. Drank my Timmies coffee on the way back home.

Have been walking every day as usual, and tracking fruits and veggies to keep the quota up. The resistance band is right in front of my face as a reminder to use it before going to bed. A good stretch sure helps my sleeping problem.

Love the owl picture.

Did 45 minutes of isometrics, resistance bands, weights and stretches (combined) 90 minutes walk approx 4.5 miles. Still no steps.....need new battery.

Speaking of pedometers Irene, I still haven't picked one up from Walmart. Must attend a meeting at the Centre tomorrow afternoon and since the Centre is in the mall it will be easy to get to the big W, that is if this old girl remembers emoticon

I hope so too, Di. Going to say I'll track all 7 days this week, but will have an absolute minimum of 3 days. That way I won't feel I've completely failed and it just may encourage me to get those 7 days in, if not this week then the next. Gosh, we really have to play head games with ourselves sometimes don't we, before getting it together?

As for exercise today, I got in an 75 min. of walking today--45 minutes with dh and 30 minutes in the grocery store. I will do some form of strength exercise before the day is out with a stretch band even if it's just 10 minutes.

So much for tracking yesterday. I was all over the map with food. I forgot to purchase the pedometer to boot so will do that today sometime. I used to put mine on in the morning as I stepped out of bed and didn't take it off until I knew that I would be mostly sitting around reading (about 9 p.m.)

Di, the pedometer I had last was from Walmart for around $14. It was great as you didn't have to set it up for stride etc. Propably not the most accurate but well within the ball-park, I'm sure. It tracked steps, miles, calories and had a timer, and would either count up or down. You could set it at 10,000 steps and work down to zero which is a great motivator to keep going, and you could also do the opposite. I think it only went to 10,000 but if you went over it would just count from start again. If the last total for the day was, for example, 453 you would know that you actually had 10,453 steps.

Glad you enjoyed the Mandarin Irene. It's quite the place, isn't it?

HI Dorothy and Di, I am using my pedometer again - 10,000+ steps at work yesterday and today! As for tracking, for Jan I am concentrating on regular fruit and veg intake, so that is what I am tracking.

Dorothy, glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Just wanted to mention the Mandarin. I was in Ontario mid December for my parents 60th wedding anniversary - we went to the Hamilton Mandarin for the dinner. It was great. Good thing there is not one out here, I would be too tempted.

Hi Dorothy, glad your feeling better. I'd love to try the tracking too. Pedometer, I have a step counter.....and a pedometer that counts calories, steps, and converts to miles.

I must try it out and reset if neccesary........correct stride distance...... and accuracy of counted steps.

Hope we can both benefit by this exercise. Di.

Now that I'm finally well enough and my appetite is starting to go into overdrive, it's time to start tracking/exercise again. I'm off to my volunteer job tomorrow and will pick up a new pedometer at the mall to replace the lost one while there. Tracking this week will only be for 3 days (Thursday, Friday & Saturday) but it's a start.

That Chinese Buffet must be a popular place, with good food.

My friend canceled this morning; as I was almost ready to leave, I decided to go anyway. Got some shopping done and 2 extra rounds of the mall. About 4.5 miles.

You sure have that right, the time is passing too quickly. Need a few more hours each day.

I'm improving ,but slowly. Go walking up to 3 times a week, about 2.5 miles and up to 4 miles when time and comfort allow. Still doing my morning routine each day.

I would like to add weights again......balance is very important right now too.

Many things to get back in my weekly workkouts. So more walking, a little weights and resistance bands. These will be my challenge.

Hi Dorothy, glad you started this challenge. I need to get serious; been stuck on the same 10Lbs.
I have my isometric + routine in the morning (pretty much before I'm up for the day). I try to walk at the mall Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Mileage is different depending on how the day goes.

I want to add 10 + minutes of the resistance bands, also weights, starting with 5 minutes and adding more as this becomes easier. This is my challenge.

It's been quite awhile since I used the tracker. Luckily, I haven't gained, nor have I lost. I do try to ensure that I have an adequate amount of fruit and veggies and get a minimum of a 30 to 45 minutes walk in everyday.

The things I want to start adding to this daily ritual is the exercise band for 5 min. twice a day or 10 min. once a day. It's probably more beneficial to do it twice, morning and night. Also I've added sitting on the side of a chair and leaning back and up for 3 sets of 10 to tighten the core muscles. This is all I want to do during the month of December. I have a big problem with consistency. If I keep it simple it's not so much of a chore, and if it's not so much of a chore, the probability of doing it every day is greater. This is my challenge.

This is the day I weigh myself.

Last week I journaled my eating (and moods and energy levels) every day. Didn't exercise much. Today I am down half a pound. So some progress.

This week, I plan to continue with the journaling, and to get more exercise into my life. I MUST do at least 10 minutes a day.......... added later: I did a 30 minute walk in the rain!!!

I think Monday will be my official new start day for walking. It wil be 5.5 weeks and, about time, I really need to get moving.

I lost .25 pound last week......keeping my weight pretty steady.........with more exercise I hope to more losses........ .5 pounds a week would be wonderful.

The exercise is going quite well. Just a little short on one day. The 45 minute AM routine is the most important; anything else is gravy on top.

Hope to start walking again, this seems to be a broken record. Getting back to a regular walking program gives me some independence, a good weight control. I need this to help get rid of excess pounds.

Here we go, 4th or 5th time; this will be successful, slow and sure. Hoping for smooth paths.

Hi Everyone,
I haven't been tracking this week, journalling or SP. Will today though. Dh and I will go for a Friday treat of fish and chips for a lunch/supper. I will pass on the chips and get mashed potatoes instead. I'm sure that there's still lots of fat in the mashed but considerably less than chips (I hope).

Exercise has been pretty good. Normally, I get out for at least a 30 minute walk every day, usually 45+ min. This week I missed 2 days with the heavy rain. It's our plan to walk down to the restaurant and back this afternoon which is 30 minutes each way. That should burn a few calories. If it doesn't rain hard (not supposed to) we can still walk.

Have a great Friday girls.

Still working on getting rid of my bruises from that fall 4.5 weeks ago. The right knee still has burgundy bruise and a trail of green/yellow down the shin. Left knee is green/yellow with some pale purple down the shin. The bruises are still quite painful. Legs and ankles still swell. Sure taking a long time to heal. As we get older it seems to be that way.

Hope you all are having a good week, Hump day tomorrow have a good one.

Wow, good record, Val.

As for me, I am continuing to write down everything I eat, and I am journaling for myself about it - keeping track of emotions/energy levels and what I eat. I also plan to exercise daily, but not so far today!

Our digital scale needed a new battery, and it finally got put in - so when I weighed myself today I was up a lb - which was less than I expected after all the thanksgiving eating and my son's great baking.

Today I went for a 45 minute walk with dh this morning in the rain. Spent the rest of the afternoon vacuuming, washing floors etc. and cleaning in dd's place as well. Di, glad you like the slogan. I used to find these things when I was in Weight Watchers and share them with the group. That was one of the few I can remember now.

Irene, you have a good plan in place. When I was at the cottage, I'd write down everything including the things I could have left alone but didn't. The next day I would try to cut back on 1 thing, then the same the day after that. It really helped.

Today, I've gotten in 1 hour of brisk walking at the Walkathon and 1 hour of heavy housework. My eating has been good today now that I finished up a pumpkin pie I bought. Ate the last of it at 3 a.m. on Thursday morning which wasn't exactly a good time to be eating. Actually, ate the whole 8" pie over the week. I usually have it once a year in the fall. The filling is what I love and ditched most of the crust as it was store bought anyway. Going to look up a light way of making a pumpkin pudding. That should save a few calories and eliminate most of the fat. emoticon emoticon emoticon
Don't feel guilty about eating that pie at all. I wanted it at this time of the year, planned for it, ate it and enjoyed every bite. Now it's gone and I'm satisfied. Time to move on.

Hi I have been MIA here over thanksgiving and out of town son's visit. And I have not been tracking or exercising. SO, all is back to normal now (son just left) and tomorrow I start again. Here is what I have decided to do: concentrate on good eating, and writing it down, and concentrating on exercising. And also journaling about my eating (to deal with the emotional eating).

Evening ladies, quite a time everyone is having this week. Could it be all the Turkey and sweets??

Dorothy, I really like your new verse, NOTHING STRETCHES SLACKS LIKE SNACKS. This is so true

Hump Day, hope it is down hill (weight wise) the rest of the week. Di.

Way to go Valerie. I'm tracking but only writing down what I've eaten this week. Still getting in lots of walking and will be doing a Walkathon for the Centre on Friday.

I forgot to post here on Sunday - I stayed within my calorie range almost every day (went over just once). On average, I was about 100 calories below the upper limit. Yeah! I'm finally doing it!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Always be yourself, because the people that matter, don't mind, and the one's that do mind don't matter.

Have a great day!

While away at the cottage I wrote down what I ate each day--the good, bad and the downright ugly, lol. No weight gain, yay!!

Not tracking so far this week but am getting lots of exercise. I plan to get back to SP tracking tomorrow now that holidays and Thanksgiving is out of the way. Sunday and Monday's exercise was 100+160.

Carol. I think that those kicks were for me. Thanks! emoticon (that's me getting a move on.)

Okay, my week did not start out well. I have had this huge task at work to do. I did it all day at work today and then finished it at home. I never do work at home, but I just HAD to get this done. SOOOO glad it is over. But I kind of ate my way through it, and no time to get outside. But now it is done - life will normalize again tomorrow.

And Dorothy, you can see that I need to be renamed Night Hawk these days.
