I have been eating out a lot in the last few weeks. Though I'm mindful of portion control, eating out is still eating out.. Food for thought: Why do I feel like eating out so much?

I have been walking a lot the last week. May be this is a good time to see if I can mix up my walk a bit, or try running for a minute in between...

Today's challenge is to really watch out for refined foods. You know the ones:

*Refined Sugar
*White Flour
*White Rice
*Junk Food w/Partially Hydrogenated oils
*Full sugar drinks (soda, Kool-Aid, sweetened tea, flavored sweet coffee)

Can you go through your day eating healthier versions of your favorite foods? Why not try:

*Whole grains (i.e. whole wheat pasta, steel cut oats, high fiber cereals, etc.)
*Brown Rice
*Splenda or sugar substitutes
*Adding fresh fruit to your cereal instead of sugar
*Adding more spices to your meal instead of unnecessary fat

1) Crazy diets? Not a diet specifically, rather a habit - Not eating until evening, eating loads at one go...

2) Eating small meals every 2-3 hrs. Based on a book by Rujuta Diwekar - Don't lose your mind, lose your weight... I like the philosophy - enjoy food cos food is good for health... The key is to eat till your satisfied and then stop with the good feeling.

Combined with exercise, I lost a bit of weight a couple of years ago (abt 10 kgs in 3 months). Now, after a bout of typhoid last year, I am trying to get back on track...

Isn't it nice to know that others are experiencing the same trials and accomplishments as you are on Spark?

When you post to a board, many folks click on your photo and read your Sparkpage. I am sure you have done it too. You find a picture or post that is interesting and click to learn more about that person.

Your challenge today is to update your Sparkpage. If you haven't started your page, GET TO IT! Folks want to know about you. Already have a Sparkpage going? GREAT! Today you can:

OooOOOoooOoo, I can work on my painting for a little bit! I recently decided that I want to learn how to paint and am starting off using one of those paint by number kits. It's challenging and tedious, but at the end, I will have a beautiful acrylic painting :D

I did it! I spent the entire weekend with my friends and family :-) Went out with dad to a vegan restaurant yesterday and had a nice family lunch at home today. Evening went out with friends...

Make use of Low Moments Day!

We all have them...those "down time" moments. Moments when we are waiting for something to finish (i.e. the coffee to finish brewing, commercials to be over so our show can come on, the dog to finish in the yard so you can let him in...)

While you are waiting for *whatever*...how about:

While waiting for your coffee to finish: Do some leg lifts or squats

While waiting for the dryer to finish: Do some trunk twists

While waiting in traffic: Tighten your buttocks muscles for 15 sec. and then release

While you are waiting at the copier for your documents: Do some arm curls or tighten your tummy muscles for 15 sec. and release

During commercials: Do some sit-ups

You get the idea. Make use of those "down times" with some unexpected exercise.

DITCH THE WHITE STUFF....No, I am not talking about pasta and bread. Today, I want you to cook without adding any salt. Trust me, most of the ingredients we use on a daily basis have plenty of salt added. Reducing your sodium will help you prevent water retention, and who wouldn't want to eliminate that bloated feeling?

No matter if you are on strength or cardio today, you can BRING IT UP A NOTCH!

What does that mean? Do you have 30 minutes of cardio planned today? Can you challenge yourself with 45-60 minutes instead?

Are you doing strength training today and plan on doing 3 different exercises? Can you challenge yourself with 2-3 more? If not, can you increase the reps a bit?

If you are walking outside or walking with a DVD...go just a little further today!

Really try to push yourself a bit today. You will feel better for it.

Have you heard the expression, "In order to get somewhere, you have to know where you've been"? This is especially true with weight loss. If you feel like you aren't making progress, trackers help you to see otherwise. I want you to add additional criteria for tracking. I use weight and inches. Some people use pictures while still others use their clothes. Make sure you are tracking!!

If you are active on the site, you have probably read through Sparkpeople's many articles. I have learned a cool trick to feeling full without extra calories. Load vegetables onto half of your plate before you serve yourself protein and starch. This is called the half plate rule. Today, I want every meal to be served up alongside half of a plate of veggies. Or fruit. Produce is your best friend!

I know that we all plan for our cardio and/or strength training. Have you ever considered that you can fit in some of that during your "down times"?

Think about it..do you sit in traffic? Wait for copies at the copier? Wait for the kids to get out of school? Wait for the coffee to finish brewing? Wait for your e-mail server to give you your messages? Wait for commercials to get over so you can watch your favorite show?

During these "down times", try a little something new.

*While waiting for your coffee to brew or the copier to finish copying, do some squats, leg/heel lifts
*While waiting in traffic, do some buttocks squeezes
*While at the computer RIGHT NOW, do some sitting tummy crunches
*Park your car farther in the parking lot for grocery shopping, picking up the kids, etc.
*Take the stairs
*Walk that message that you would usually e-mail to a co-worker to them personally
*When commercials come on, jog in place or do sit-ups

You get the idea..fit in some "unplanned and unexpected" exercise into your day. Every little bit helps and counts!

I love the SP nutrition tracker, but there's something I love about hard copy notes. I love being able to peruse my food log and emotional notes anytime. Your challenge today is to write down your food with pen and paper. It's somewhat cathartic as well. emoticon

Awwww, well I blew this challenge.... I'm currently playing on SparkPeople while half watching one of my TV shows and am going to try to get ready for bed in an hour.... I do cover up my alarm clock at night so I'm not tempted to keep checking the time emoticon

Sparkpeople is all about small, manageable changes. Sleep is so important; being tired can lead to poor decision such as skipping exercise or eating unhealthy food. Technology's double edged sword rears its ugly head at night. The light emitted from TVs, computer screens, cell phones, etc are blue lights, which can rouse you. Give yourself a good chance at a great night's sleep by not using these devices at least 2 hours before you go to bed. emoticon

Take your measurements day! You know it has been a while...pull out that tape measure and write down your meaurements for:

*Bust
*Waist
*Hips

If you feel like measuring thighs & upper arms - go for it! Keep track in a journal, on your computer, or a notebook so you can see how well you have been doing. Remember that working out your arms *might* increase the measurement. Don't panic! You are replacing flab for fantastic fit muscles!

Also...can you get in 10 glasses of water today? Give it a try!

follow the nutrition plan that I've already laid out for today. Only eat the planned snacks and meals. Exercise after work as planned (Gilad Total Body Sculpt is the best!) and reward myself with a relaxing glass of wine at the end of the day.

For Me...."I will....Snack on some raw veggies (carrots, celery stick with cheese). I will also go for a short walk instead of putting my hands into a bag of chips or candy jar!
