Hi everyone,

I hope everybody is feeling well and feeling positive!

This wasn't the best week for me with my job--very discouraging and it's not going to get better. Probably related to that, I didn't lose any weight this week, but I did maintain. I managed to get in my daily half hour of exercise and only had one really bad eating day. I told myself I needed the exercise to reduce stress and it was worth the time away from work.

I hope to show a weight loss next week. When I've lost 30 pounds, I think I'll have crossed that line where I can see that my current size is just too baggy and I NEED the next size down. The last 10 pounds was for the surgeon; this next 10 pounds is for ME!

Also, on a Signs From Above note: I got a piece of junk mail this week for a pre-approved credit card addressed to my dad--dead for 16 years. My dad never lived at my address. Although my parents worked very hard to treat my brother and I equally, I was my dad's favorite and my brother was my mom's favorite. So I'd like to think that it's a sign that my dad is watching out for us--moneywise/jobwise. Lottery-wise? emoticon

Anyway, that's my news. I hope everyone has happy, healthy weekends!

Hugs,
~ Pam

Anna,
Thank you so much for sharing this. It explains so well what this struggle is really all about. I'm going to print it and read it often.

Discipleship: Renewing Your Mind
by Rick Warren

Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts. Proverbs 4:23 (TEV)

*** *** *** ***

To change your life, you must change the way you think. Behind everything you do is a thought. Every behavior is motivated by a belief, and every action is prompted by an attitude.

God revealed this thousands of years before psychologists understood it: "Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts" (Proverbs 4:23 TEV).

Imagine riding in a speedboat on a lake with an automatic pilot set to go east. If you decide to reverse course and head west, you have two possible ways to change the boat's direction.

One way is to grab the steering wheel and physically force it to head in the opposite direction from where the autopilot is programmed to go. By sheer willpower, you could overcome the autopilot, but you'd feel constant resistance. Your arms would eventually tire of the stress, you'd let go of the steering wheel, and the boat would instantly head back east, the way it was internally programmed.

This is what happens when you try to change you life with willpower; you say, "I'll force myself to eat less ... stop smoking ... quit being disorganized and late."

And, yes, willpower can produce short-term change, but it creates constant internal stress because you haven't dealt with the root cause. The change doesn't feel natural. Eventually you give up and go off the diet.

There is a better and easier way: Change your autopilot; in other words, the way you think. "Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think" (Romans 12:2 NLT).

Change always starts first in the mind. The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel influences the way you act, which means "there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes" (Ephesians 4:23 NLT).

To be like Christ you must develop the mind of Christ. The New Testament calls this mental shift "repentance," which in Greek literally means "to change your mind."

To repent means to change the way you think - about God, yourself, sin, other people, life, your future, and everything else, and you adopt Christ's outlook and perspective on life.

We have been out 3 days now walking, varying between 2 and 6 miles so far. Today we have had a frenzy of cleaning. Hubby did the bathroom while I did the kitchen then we did the lounge/dining room together. Moved all the furniture and cleaned behind it and inside all the units so all is sparkling. Had good aerobic workouts..lol

Susie,
I don't even remember how many days it is now. It's like building a foundation. All I can say is it's been one good day on top of another. And, the more good days you have behind you, the easier it is to make today another good day. The voice of victory becomes louder than the voice of the food calling out.
How's that walking going for you?

Great work everybody.
Dot, how many days is it now 3 or 4? I am starting again with upping the exercise tomorrow as hubby is off now on holiday until 6th March. They have to use up holidays before the new ones start in April, so we will be walking together, which means I will be here first thing in the morning and last thing at night for next week or so. I will be checking in at least twice a day

Hi Everybody!
Pam, that is great! A pound gone for good! I'm doing really well. Getting my head screwed on straight again. I wrote down small goals the other day so I can see the way to the bigger goal...like sign-posts along the way. I repeat them to myself like a mantra and it seems to be working.

I'm doing okay. My knee is mostly recovered after I injured it doing Hula Hoop on Wii Fit. Last night I did some non-arm cardio for the first time in two weeks. I wore a knee brace that (mostly) fits my fat knee, and it felt good!

I weighed in this morning and I was down one pound this week. Yay!

Although I'm one to talk. I got into some heavy duty work stress eating today and tonight. And I decided it would be even more stressful to try to curb the eating tonight which would distract me from my work, so I didn't.

Dot, HANG IN THERE! This too shall pass. We all have those times where we just want to fight against the changes we're trying to make. What are you feeling? Sometimes being aware of the emotions behind the struggle helps weaken those emotions.

In my latest "snap", I was feeling a lot of anger and resentment. I resented the idea of anyone controlling my eating (and exercise)--even me--and felt anger at the idea of needing to count calories for the rest of my life.

You can do it, Dot! In your own time, in the way that's right for you--you WILL do it!

Sue, thanks for the calorie plateau-buster information! If you've had a similar thing happen to you, then next time it happens to me I'll try increasing my calories 100-200/day instead of the wild emotional eating I did.

Kathy, Congratulations on the scale moving down. You're doing GREAT!! When the weather gets nice, you're gonna be Super Slim Woman with your walker.
emoticon

Dot, It's great to hear from you--and even better to hear that your dinner party was such a success! Way to go!
emoticon

As for what a Wii is, it's a game system like a Nintendo or a Playstation. But what is special about the Wii is that it has a wireless remote controller and a special sensor bar that tracks your remote's movements. This means that your physical movements make your character move. When you swing the "Wiimote" like a tennis racket, the Wii tennis game mimics your movement with your character. It's a step closer to virtual reality, and the Wii's main focus is to provide family-oriented activity.

Wii Fit is a game for the Wii which has a special balance board that senses shifting weight and balance. It offers yoga, strength, aerobic, and balance games. It's not much of a workout for someone like Coach Nicole, but it's wonderful for a flab ball like me.

emoticon Actually, the Wii doesn't look anything like this emoticon. It's more like waving your TV remote at your TV. The Wiimote has a strap that you use to secure the Wiimote to your wrist. Use it! Without it, people have actually thrown their Wiimotes into their TVs when bowling with the Wii.
emoticon

Hey "Just Do It" Team! So glad you're all here!
I haven't been able to post or even get to my computer since early Friday! Had a HUGE Dinner party on Friday night that I had to prepare for. Yes, Pam, the evening went really well...lots of compliments on my cooking... emoticon Even I can't believe I cooked all that food! Yesterday I was out with my granddaughter and niece...and, here I am...back again...if even for just a couple of minutes.
I don't even know what a Wii IS! What's wrong with me? I hear everybody talking about this thing!
Talk to you later!

On the boxes of Wii fit over here the max user is 23 stones which is 312lbs.

My hair was only just scraping my shoulder and now it is short, so not much really..lol

Congrats on the weight off, I have noticed last year when I maintained for 5 weeks, that I went right to the top of my cals and lost 4lbs!! so maybe we aren't eating enough!!

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND MY BODY!! For two weeks I am better than good, but not TOO low in calories, and I don't lose a thing. I get angry and frustrated and have a week of emotional eating--and I lose 2 pounds. Shouldn't be any hormones involved in this. I'm tempted to conclude that the secret to weight loss is to eat anything I want to, but I'm pretty sure that's why I have so much weight to lose in the first place.

I'm NOT complaining, though!!
emoticon

Oh! Another Wii thought. The Wii Fit doesn't specify a maximum weight that I could find; however, I know someone from another team who had to get down to around 310-315 before the Wii Fit stopped telling her she was too heavy to use the board.

Ah, but Sue, How LONG was your hair? If you check my SparkPage, you'll see I have long hair--comes to around mid-back right now, If I cut it short, I might lose a pound. Nah, I'd just start growing it back out and then I'd GAIN weight.
emoticon

We play Wii Sports when the grown-up kids are over too! My daughter and her husband just got a Wii for Christmas, and we all played Wii Game Party at her house for my son's birthday party.

The Wii is especially good for people who just do way too much sitting and hate formal exercise (that would be me).
emoticon

Also, athough this doesn't apply to Marcie, you can get fun chair-bound activity on the Wii. I know of the following two Wii games, and I'm sure there are more Wii games I don't know about:
1) Wii Sports (comes with the Wii game system) I assume everyone has seem the Wii commercials at some point? Bowling, baseball, tennis, golf, and boxing.
That wheel-chair-bound sister gets her activity with Wii Sports.

2) Helix ($10 Wiiware. You can connect a Wii to the Internet and download Helix.) Helix is arm-dancing to Techno music, with a lot of big range arm movements. Three difficulty settings, 26 songs.
I'm currently getting low-to-middle cardio heart range aerobics with Helix while sitting in a chair. (I injured my knee doing Wii Fit Hula Hoop a week ago. Stupid.) While giving my knee R&R (and ice and compression), I downloaded Helix to be able to continue getting an areobic workout. It's FUN! I plan to fit Helix into my exercise week AFTER my knee heals.

Note to Self: If you feel a strain on your knees, just acknowledge that particular exercise isn't for you. Don't try to catch up to your girlfriend who brags about her Hula Hoop score!!

I apologize for being such a Wii advocate. It's because I was gaining and maintaining weight until I set a goal of "Just do something on the Wii Fit every day--even just 3 minutes." It took me 4 weeks to achieve that goal (4-5 days/week I'd manage), but by then I was up to 10 minutes/day and finally started losing weight. It hasn't been fast, but every pound I've lost so far has been due to using the Wii.

But I know it's not for everyone, and at $250 + tax, the Wii game system is not a casual purchase. Neither is the wonderful Wii Fit at $90 + tax. Most other Wii games are half that cost.

Coach Nicole's review of Wii Fit in the Blogs can give you an opposing viewpoint. Basically she says, "Eeh. It's activity, but it isn't EXERCISE." But she is right when she says you get out of Wii Fit what you put into it. I put in a LOT.

We need more opinions on the Wii. C'mon people!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!

Oh! Oh! I vote YES to Marcie buying a Wii! emoticon

Like anything, the Wii only works if you use it. My best friend got Wii & Wii Fit for Christmas, but just lets her kids play it. But I also have the testimonies of my girlfriend who was recently diagnosed with diabetes (Surprise! Your blood sugar is 398!), her best friend, and her sister.

My girlfriend rushed out and bought the Wii and Wii Fit shortly after her diabetes diagnosis. She loves the Wii Fit, loves the convenience and the sense of fun, and loves how it brings her blood sugar down. She recently bought Wii Dance Dance Revolution for variety, because she loves to dance.
emoticon

Her girlfriend has Wii and Wii Fit and loves them--she talked my girlfriend into getting them.

Her sister had a foot amputated just below the knee a few months ago and is wheel-chair bound. She and her husband bought a Wii for themselves for Christmas. Since they got the Wii, her husband has stopped going out to the bar in the evenings and stays home to play Wii. They have a merry time playing Wii Sports (comes with the Wii), and the sister brags how she does better at bowling from her wheelchair than her husband does on his feet.

Of course, Marcie already KNOWS I'm a Wii convert, so now other people need to post to disagree with me.
emoticon

And Sue, you're BRILLIANT! I never thought about cutting my HAIR! I'll bet I'd show a whole pound less gain for this week's weigh-in. Where are my scissors?

I am doing it, tracking, walking and even had my haircut and still stayed the same, oh well just keep plodding.

We are out tomorrow and have a 3 course meal, luckily it is pre-ordered and the food is usually rubbish anyway, last time I didn't eat it. I have ordered soup, veggie stir fry and meringues and fruit.

Your dinner party for 16 people sounds like fun, but a LOT of work! I'm glad your husband took the day off to help--good man! Do you do all the cooking or do your guests bring something? Let me know how it goes.

That is GREAT that you were able to stick to your plan AND get your water in! And absolutely we have to pick our battles. This is all about long-term, permanent success--trying to achieve everything all at once is really a form of self-sabotage: "I couldn't do everything I want to be able to do, so I must not be able to succeed at all. Why bother trying?" I keep hearing "baby steps" until I'm sick of it, but it IS true. We work on what we can work on now and set aside the rest for later.

I finally was down to the upper range of my target calories yesterday, but it was harder than I expected it to be. I'll see how today goes. I'm not weighing in until tomorrow morning for the Buddy Challenge. *sigh* I'm braced for a weight gain; I just don't know how big it will be.

Great idea, we all need extra support, I know I do. Plus I will be on holiday in a few weeks and we all have things in our lives which at times mean we can't post, so it is nice to have other people to talk to
