Ok teamies...I think I'm getting the hang of this!

Here's what I intend to do with my day to push myself toward success, both in fitness and life in general:

1. Eat healthy meals, cereal for breakfast, protein snack, salad for lunch, protein snack, and a healthy dinner with my family.
2. Walk 30 min, do 15 min of yoga stretches focusing on my sore shoulder this morning!
3. Meditate 10 min (this will be hard!)
4. Spend 1 hour doing housework, with timers at 15 min for breaks, during which I will allow myself computer time!
5. Finish two tasks that DH asked me to do for him. Take boots to shoe shine, and clean off window seat in the bedroom.

How about you? Keep me accountable, friends!

"...it matters to this one..."

What good I do today is a gift to myself, and it's never too late to do good.

hi pam, I haven't logged weight yet but am only down one. Staying the same is better than gaining! Maybe try lowering or increasing your calories would help sometines our bodies get use to something and we have to shake it up a little. One more day to work then I can catch up. talk you soon and hang in there, one day at a time. marcie

Hi Marcie,

I'm reporting on the last day of our January Buddy Challenge.

Mini-Challenge:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - Total: 15 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics with 7 minutes mini-trampoline jogging, and 20 minutes "Sweatin' to the Oldies"

I maintained again last week. I followed my calorie goals so I'm disappointed.

Hi Marcie,

LC introduced herself on my SparkPage and I left a comment on her page. I asked her if she was okay with the team name "Mind Over Matter".

I think having Vicky with last week's team winner stacks the deck against the other teams, but oh well. Maybe Sue feared OUR blossoming healthy power and decided that if we had Vicky too, we would be unstoppable. Ha! You and LC and I will be unstoppable anyway.

I asked in the February Challenge thread if we're supposed to start new team threads for February. No response yet.

Thanks for the info on the A1C test. I had no clue. You're doing a whole lotta something right!

emoticon Hi Pam, No you weren't wrong. Originally Vicky was on our team but then the teams were rearranged and now we have the lovely LC. The A1C blood test measures the glucose (sugar) level in my blood for the past 3 months. When I was first diagnosed it was 13 (not good), it's been stuck around 8 for a few years, but it was below 7 for the first time. I take medications (3 different ones) to help my body absorb the sugar that and what I eat and how active I am also affects it. So the numbers on the scale are moving too much my other "numbers" have improved. So I guess something is working. Have you heard from LC yet? Talk to you soon, Marcie

Hi Marcie,

Congratulations!! That's WONDERFUL news! Ummm... What A1C? (The rest I understood.) You're well on your way to your goal of reduced medications!

Did you get a chance to ask about your ankle?

I don't know about new threads either, but since some of the teams are reorganized, I thought they might want new threads. We can ask in the January Challenge thread later this week.

My mini-challenge activity for Monday
Fruit - clementine
Activity - 30 minutes (consecutive) DDR. I'm sore...

Hey Pam, More good news! I went to the doctor today for a check-up and my numbers were great! My A1C was down below 7, I've been hovering at 8 for over a year, blood pressure was awesome. Cholesterol was up a little but he wasn't concerned. He lowered one of my diabetes meds. He is all for my eating and exercise plan and wants to see me in a month. He said as I lose weight we will have to keep adjusting my diabetes meds and possibly my blood pressure meds. Yeah less meds. That is one of my goals, to reduce my medications. So even though the scale may not be moving as much and as fast as I would like it to my new habits are improving my health. emoticon It's all about the numbers and I don't care which ones go down as long as something does. Are e suppose to start new threads for february? We'll have to find out. Chat later Marcie

Hi Marcie,

I'm thrilled about the 4 lbs lost; I just have to rein myself in when I accidentally do something like that. The next thing I do is start calculating... "If I lose 4 pounds a week until xx/xx/2009, then I'd weigh nnn for event yyyyyy, and I could wear zzzz." Of course, that doesn't happen, and I end up thinking I'm a failure and I may as well quit because it isn't working--completely overlooking the fact that I HAD lost weight during that period. (I'm already having to fight down, "If I lose 2 lbs a week until...")

You're doing INCREDIBLE with your walking, especially in the face of multiple adversity: bad ankle, back pain, asthma, and severe cold & hills!!! I don't think I could do HALF as well as you're doing with all that to overcome. You are a WALKING WARRIOR!!
emoticon emoticon

Not to lose your Walking Warrior status, but if you can get DDR for only $36, that sound great! How does that work? Does the $36 include a mat?

I see that our new team mate is Vicky (Wants2Cruise). She is the weigh-loss QUEEN in this challenge! We may get some really good ideas from her. I suppose we make a new team thread for February. I hope Vicky likes "Mind Over Matter" as the team name; I'm rather fond of it, myself.

My mini-challenge activity for Saturday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 20 minutes Wii step aerobics and 10 minutes Wii Hula Hoop & Rhythm Boxing.

Keep going strong! We WILL do this--and for the LAST time, too.

Hugs,
~ Pam

emoticon emoticon Yeah for you! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, take the 4 pounds and enjoy it. I had hoped for more but i"ll take the 2. Hey together we lost 6 and got recognized on the thread. We have a new partner for February. That's cool with me. My walking buddy and I walked today. It was very very cold. It was about 20. We walked for 30 minutes, went around the block twice. I don't know if it was a mile or not. But it does have a good hill which I have to stop about half way up to catch my breath. Walking in the cold with asthma is a little tuff. But I did it! My walking buddy has a Wii and just bought the DDR. I was doing some research online and discovered you can get the DDR to go directly to your TV for about $36 for a single. That I might buy, it's more in my price range. I'll let you know what I decide. Keep up the good work, stay on track and thanks for the encouragement. Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

Well, Judy didn't record her weight for the challenge this week, so I guess we've lost a team mate before we ever got to know her.

My mini-challenge activity for Saturday:
Fruit - cherries!
Exercise - 60 minutes of Wii Dance Dance Revolution (DDR)

I was really stupid tonight. I was feeling guilty about eating my yummy, 1300-calorie supper. I didn't feel guilty because it blew my calories for the day because it didn't. I'd eaten very little during the day so that I could enjoy my meal. No, I felt guilty because it occurred to me that there are many women in SparkPeople, some even in my weight range, who only eat 1300 or even 1200 calories for the whole DAY. So I set out to do 30 minutes of DDR to atone, then thought maybe I could do 45 minutes, and pushed myself to do an hour. Now I am SO SORE--especially my shoulders, neck and back, oddly enough.

Congratulations on your SECOND TWO POUND LOSS IN TWO WEEKS! You're doing incredible!
emoticon emoticon

Sounds like you had a fantastic Friday night! Hope the rest of your weekend is as good.

Hugs,
~ Pam

Hi Marcie,

How did that old scale treat you today? I hope it was kind to you.

Are you still listening to your hypnosis CD at all? How about your boyfriend? And is he doing as well as you are?

I'm not taking that group hypnosis because they never emailed back. I've been working on brainwashing myself with subliminal tapes. Since directly listening to "Weight Loss" backfires, I'm targeting the contributing issues, with "Super Immunity and Health", "Personal Power", "Soaring Self Esteem", and "Ending Self-Destructive Patterns." Listening to Self Esteem made me feel very sad and I almost quite listening to it. But after 4-5 days the sadness stopped, and now I feel more positive.

My reaction reminds me of people crying when they're happy, and how the tears are actually supposed to be crying from the pain when something good DIDN'T happen for them. Like crying at a wedding: although the occasion is happy, the subconscious grieves, remembering the relationships that failed, the love that never happened, the promises broken, "I don't look that good/young/happy anymore", etc. So I wonder if I was so sad those first days of "Self Esteem", because I grieved that no one ever said those things to me in the past (whatever it is they're saying). Just a theory... emoticon

My scale surprised me today. I was down 4 pounds! While I was happy, that seemed unreasonably kind and I was suspicious. I'd even had real popcorn with real butter and a frosted brownie last night! I dragged out the tape measure and I'd lost some inches. Then I weighed in on the Wii Fit board and THAT agreed. Apparently I really am down 4 pounds since last Friday. I've concluded it was one of the following:
a) A delayed weigh loss from last week's maintenance.
b) An advance weigh loss from a future week.
c) Yoga instead of cardio during my 3-day "active recovery" is a lot better for me than I would have ever dreamed. emoticon
d) I should eat more brownies and buttered popcorn. emoticon

For a little while this morning I entertained hopes of having the highest weight loss this week, even though I'm not trying to lose weight fast. My one fluke chance! And then I went to record my weight in the Challenge thread and found out I was already beaten at least twice over. Ah well. Good thing I'm not trying to lose weight fast.
emoticon

Well, I started up my cardio today, taking it a little easier like SparkPeople recommends. I didn't do any of my really heart-pounding aerobics like the fast step aerobics, jogging on my trampoline, or DDR. I just did the slightly less intense step aerobics, and some yoga (just in case yoga has super powers).

My mini-challenge activity for Friday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 20 minutes Wii Fit (not super fast) step aerobics & 14 minutes of miracle Wii Fit Yoga

I vaguely remember reading back like 30 years ago that yoga was supposed to be really good for toning up the internal organs and do some sort of wonderful thing. I wonder if that was actually true... Maybe it needs brownie power to reach its full potential?
emoticon

Sorry about this rambling post. We're watching Dr. Who on DVD and I'm just blabbing away here.

Hugs,
~ Pam

Hi Marcie,

Congratulation on your great walking--especially with weird work schedule and your ankle hurting! Your dedication is amazing!! Yeah, wearing your ankle thingy for your walks sounds like a good idea. You're trying to get healthier, not break yourself.
emoticon

I love your plan to weigh in on the old scale. When you get your new one, you should throw the old one out the front door and into the snow--and leave it there. Give the neighbors something to talk about. emoticon

I'm planning to start cardio again tomorrow and see how I'm doing. Hopefully I'll be rested enough and my "active recovery" wasn't too "active".

My mini-challenge activity for Thursday:
Fruit - clementine
Exercise - 20 minutes Wii Fit Yoga & 15 minutes of Wii Fit Balance Games

Good luck one your weigh-in tomorrow! I hope your scale reflects how great you've been all week.

Hugs,
~ Pam

Hi Marcie,

Thanks for the ideas about work, poor concentration, and food. I'll try them out! Today was better than yesterday, at least.

I'm still avoiding cardio, at least through Friday, to give my body a chance to recover. Have a great walk or two over the weekend, and I hope the weather isn't too bad.

Those analog scales with the needle drive me nuts too. I hope you get a decent new scale soon.

Judy, if you're reading our team thread, feel free to jump in! You haven't replied to my email or replied on this thread. I'm assuming that either you haven't been on SparkPeople for a few days or else you just want the weight check-in part of the January Challenge, not the Buddy part.

My mini-challenge activity for Wednesday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 20 minutes of Wii Fii yoga and 10 minutes of Wii Fit balance games

emoticon Hi Pam & Judy, No Pam I have not heard from Judy and she hasn't joined our thread. I wonder if she is having difficulties finding it? I would like to stay buddies with you. I think we have connected. Don't let work get you all frazzled. Are you getting enough rest? Are you drinking more or less coffee? Maybe you should lay off the cardio and try some relaxation techniques to reduce the stress? Maybe increase your protein or balance protein and carbs together, they last longer that way? Well those are my thoughts. I have a scale that in reality I don't know how old it is. It is just tired but it has a digital read and not just the needle that goes around. My Mom gave me a scale but it has the little needle and it isn't accurate enough for me. Well my local buddy and I are going to try to walk at lunch either tomorrow or Friday but definitely on Sunday. Talk to you soon, Marcie

Hi Marcie and Judy,

My work quality is terrible lately. I have a lot of trouble concentrating when I'm cutting my calories, and I'm not even severely dieting. This happens to me all the time whenever I cut back food, but I really can't afford to be in space cadet mode right now. I have a LOT of work to do, work that involves research & problem solving, and a looming deadline. I'm wondering if I should be eating maintenance calories for the next month until I get through this deadline. emoticon Thoughts? Suggestions?

Well, I rested from cardio today. I plan to rest from cardio again Wednesday and Thursday, then see how I'm doing on Friday.

My mini-challenge activity for Tuesday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 20 minutes of Wii Fii yoga and 10 minutes of strength training

Marcie, I haven't heard from Judy yet. Have you?

Hi Marcie & Judy,

I'm glad you stayed in your robe & jammies all day, Marcie--that's a cozy feeling you deserved! I hope tomorrow isn't too much of a cold, snowy headache for you. And the V8 Fusion sounds like a great way to cover a fruit AND veggie.

I think I've been pushing too hard to get my cardio in every day without fail. Even though I've only been doing 20-30 minutes of cardio a day, I've done it every day for the last 7 weeks without a day off, and I'm a flab ball for starters. This last week it's gotten harder and harder to finish my workouts and my heart rate is a good 10-12 beats per minute faster doing the same things. I'm tired and sleepy all the time. Tonight I checked out SparkPeople's Fitness FAQ, and even though I'm not doing all that much cardio, apparently it's a stressor for my body and I should have been taking a day off each week to rest. The FAQ says now that I've exhausted myself, I need 3-5 days off to rest and recover. "Active recovery" is okay, so I'm hoping to do 10 minutes of Wii Fit yoga instead of cardio until I feel better.

My mini-challenge activity for Monday:
Fruit - clementine
Exercise - 25 total minutes of Wii Fit aerobics and Wii DDR

Hugs,
~ Pam

Hi Marcie,

I knew you were going to be busy working all weekend, I just wanted to keep up my end of the bargain. What a pain that you had to be out driving in all that scary snow! I think couch potato mode today is a great chance to recover from that driving.

I emailed Judy about our team, and I added your ID so you would know what I sent. Does SparkMail HAVE a cc feature?

Anyway, enjoy your days off!

I feel like I'm getting slower and slower. I haven't had a day off of aerobics in over a month. I know we're supposed to take at least a day break between strength trainings, should I be taking one day a week off from aerobics?

Hi Marcie,

I hope your weekend is going okay and you aren't working too hard.

My mini-challenge activity for Saturday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 25 total minutes of Wii aerobics. (I've decided it's too much bother to break it down to stepping, jogging, and DDR.) Do I get a day off?

We had our family celebration for my son's birthday tonight. I behaved myself fairly well around the food, so I'm pleased.

It just dawned on me--you've now lost over 10 pounds with SparkPeople! You should add a "10 Pounds Lost" success picture to your SparkPage.

Hi Marcie,

Congratulations on your weight loss this week! Way to go!!
emoticon

I'll pass on those 100-calorie snack packs. If I can manage portion control, then I can measure a portion of my own snack for a lot less money. If I can't manage portion control, then I don't need to spend the extra money to NOT manage one portion.
emoticon

The Wii is great, but it is a chunk of change! I bought our Wii when they first came out, then later got Wii Fit when IT first came out, etc., so the cost was spread out a bit.

My mini-challenge activity for Friday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - 15 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics & 15 minutes of Wii Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) WOOHOO!

Don't work too hard this weekend! Try to sneak in a little time for yourself.

Good job getting that walking in, Marcie!! You've done an amazing job this week!
emoticon

I live in Minnesota. I work out of my home right now and I just can't get warm! I have the thermostat at 61 to be able to afford the heating bill, but the cold drafts from -25 and -46 windchill... brrrrr. I had the chills and felt so tired; I thought I was sick, but I don't have a fever. I just added a HEAVY cloak to my sweat pants, two pairs of socks, t-shirt, long-sleeved heavy flannel shirt, and sweater. FINALLY I'm warm. My son isn't having the issues I am, so maybe I am a little sick.

I tried the 100-calorie snack packs once. I had one pack and then ate the whole box. One pack just got me started.

I demonstrated my Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Hottest Party 2 game for the Wii today. I had a working lunch with my friend and former team lead who is out on workman's comp for arm surgeries and therapy. She's stuck at home recovering, so I went over to pick her brain for work and show her the DDR. (Her house was warm!) She was diagnosed as diabetic right before Thanksgiving, so she's very keen to get exercise and got the Wii and Wii Fit, which she loves. She also loved the DDR and ordered one later this afternoon. She claimed I didn't look ridiculous trying to step on the arrows to the music--what a friend!
emoticon

Well, my eating for yesterday and today was back to the upper end of my target calorie range, if only I didn't have that horrible day Tuesday. I'm still cheering for maintenance weight tomorrow. I'll keep trudging along, whatever the result.

My mini-challenge activities for Thursday:
Fruit - tangerine
Activity - 30 minutes on Wii Fit DDR

Do we want to change our challenges for next week or keep working on the same ones? I'm okay working on the same ones, but open to change.

Stay warm and take care! I think it's supposed to warm up a bit tomorrow.

Hugs,
~ Pam

emoticon Hi Pam,
I can't remember if you ever said where you live? But where ever you are I am so glad I don't! we are having our coldest winter in over 5 years. The weatherman calls it an ALberta CLipper. It's about 10 with a wind chill of about 0. And it snowed again today, just enough to be annoying. Everything is icy under this fresh batch of snow. Treacherous walking and scary driving in some places. I am also guilty of carb craving. I love crackers and potatoes. So i find if a allow myself some in portion it helps me not to binge on them. I love those 100 calorie bags of anything! I get a taste of what ever I am craving (cookies, chips, even candy) but the portion size is al set for me. Otherwise I could eat a whole box of crackers or cookies or a whole bag of potato chips. Have you tried them yet? Maybe if you feed the craving you won't end up binging on it. Oh I went to Walmart twice today with clients and once to the grocery store. So got my "walking" in. Well hang in there and chin up. Tomorrow is a brand new day. Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

I'm not sure what I was trying to feed. I just wanted to cry. When I ask, "What was I trying to feed?" I get: "furnance, fuel, fast, food, angry, hurt, response, respect, broken heart, hurt, either you're against me or you're half against me, bewildered"...

Sounds like a hodge podge of emotions.

In another team, someone started a thread asking, "Does the cold make you hungry?" EUREKA! No wonder I've been on a mad carb craving. Right now it's -22, with -42 windchill, my house is drafty and too expensive to heat comfortably. All I want to do is curl up in a cocoon with a bag of Cheetos.

Well, today (Wednesday) was much better than Tuesday, in spite of the cold. And I did force myself to shed two sweaters down to the t-shirt to exercise. My goal is maintenance for Friday.

My Mini-Challenge Activity for Wednesday:
Fruit - clementine
Exercise - 20 minutes total Wii Fit step aerobics

You're doing great walking in stores when it's so darn cold outside! Great job!!

emoticon Hey Pam, Sorry you had a bad day. What were you trying to feed? Maybe I could help. Remember I work in the mental health field and am a better cheer leader for my clients than I am for myself. Sometimes just telling someone and getting their perspective on the issue helps. Today was a goof, a slip, it was not a major catastrophe. Maybe we should look up the AA creed and use it for our addictions. One day at a time. You can't change what's done but you don't have to repeat it tommorrow. Fresh day fresh start. Hang in there. Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

You're doing FANTASTIC! You walked today, you had pita pocket pizza to feed a craving, AND you've lost 3 lbs this so far this week!!
emoticon emoticon emoticon

Do you feel like the hypnosis is making it easier to make the choices you want to make? Or are you just superwoman and an inspiration to me?

I've never heard back from that hypnotist who's running the group seminar here at the end of January, so I doubt I'm signing up for her seminar.

Too bad, because I absolutely SNAPPED today and tonight! I backtracked my calories a little while ago. 4800 calories today, and afterwards I wanted to cry-not because I feel bad about the mad binge (I don't, unfortunately), but I think I want to cry because it didn't fix something that was hurting.

There will be no weight loss for me this week; I'll be lucky if I can weigh the same on Friday. However, tomorrow is another day. I just have to remember: KEEP TRYING! Making an effort this week didn't succeed, but not trying will definitely fail!

On the plus side, I achieved my mini-challenge goals today:
Fruit - Clementine (bet ya didn't see THAT one coming!)
Exercise - 20 total minutes Wii Fit Step Aerobics

Take care in the sucky weather tomorrow! Oh, I had a thought about your back hurting when you walk. How are your shoes? I was buying new insoles for my shoes this weekend, because the shoes aren't comfortable for walking like they used to be. I saw insoles that claim they were good for aching backs, so I just thought maybe your shoes aren't has helpful as they could be. Of course, shoes aren't a cure-all or I'd be able to walk all day without problems.

emoticon Hey pam, Hope you had a good day. I was off work today because I have to work Saturday and Sunday. I take one day this week and one next week off to make up for it. Work week runs Sunday thru Saturday so we take a day each week. Next Monday is a holiday so I took Tuesday off so I get 2 days off in a row. I did my walking at the grocery store today. I have been craving pizza for about a week so I figured I better come up with a low calorie way to feed the craving. So I dug up an old recipe for pita pocket pizzas. I figured it out to be 180 calories per pita. If you want I will give you the recipe. It's one I made up from a WW's one. But it was good and it hit the spot so hopefully it will be awhile before I will "need" to have pizza again. I feel good about weight loss this week. So far the scale says 3 pounds emoticon Oh and it is my right knee I never made the connection about getting in and out of the car and I do that all day long! Back to work tomorrow and the weather is suppose to suck again. Talk to you later, Marcie

Hi Marcie,

You mentioned a couple of days ago that you have trouble with one of your knees. Which knee? My left knee gives me a LOT more problems than my right, and I wonder if having to stand on our left legs and TWIST to get into the driver's seat of a car is a factor. Just curious. I'm thinking of making an informal knee poll thread.

I know it's wrong to use food as a reward or compensation or numbing "medication", but I still haven't come up with alternatives that are meaningful for me--yet. Poop!

Self-sabotage: I can see that part of me is actively trying to get fired to get away from my job situation, and part of me is desperately trying to hang onto my work ethics because I NEED my job. This is called "stress". emoticon As the t-shirt says, "Stress is caused by resisting the urge to choke the living daylights out of someone who richly deserves it."

We're both interested in hypnosis; ever tried any subliminal tapes/CDs? I have a company that I like, InnerTalk.com, but I have the same weird thought process that I did during that stage hypnosis, so I seem to take suggestions and go off into the woolly wilderness with them. I have their subliminal weight loss CD. The first two or three days I feel like eating less and then I rebel and eat MORE. I need subliminals that work with my twisted inner logic...

I actually have a self-sabotage subliminal tape, "Ending Self-Destructive Behavior." After listening to it for a year, I realized I no longer assumed people disliked me. (Now they have to prove it! emoticon ) This is actually pretty amazing because that's been a lifetime problem for me. I listened to the tape last night, but I still didn't feel like working and I still wanted to eat--but I felt chatty. *sigh*

However, when I went to bed last night I realized that I've forgotten to listen to my subliminal CD, "Personal Power", while I sleep for 4 nights in a row. So I played it while sleeping last night. Today I STILL don't want to do any work, but it's less intense, AND I feel much more "I can do it!" about weight loss. I listened to my "Super Immunity & Health" subliminal tape today when possible. Maybe "Personal Power" and "Super Immunity & Health" are what made me gradually get started on lifestyle change in the first place. I don't know... I just know I don't seem to respond correctly to direct suggestions.

I think if I post any weight loss this week it's going to be due to exercise!

My Mini-Challenge Activity for Monday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - Total 20 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics

We're gonna be out of bananas soon, and today we got the snow in Minnesota that missed you last weekend!

Take care. We CAN do this! Our way, our timetable, our success!

emoticon Hi Pam,
I am in the same situation with my job. My boss is a jerk. I love what I do but am not compensated well. We were told no raises at all this year. They are cutting the budget so the last 2 case managers that left are not being replaced. The budget cuts come from the state and trickle down. I have been sendin out resumes for months. Got a couple of interviews but either they are paying less than what I get now or there is too much travel involved and the pay doesn't reflect that. Unemployment in RI is the highest in the country so I guess I will keep looking for that dream job and stay where I am. I can't afford to quit I need the medical and am paying back student loans. And yes my first reaction is to feed the frustration. The little devil in my head will tell me "I deserve that donut because my boss is an idiot". Or "Have some nice pizza for lunch and you'll feel better". The problem is after I eat it I feel worse! Then I am totally disgusted with myself for letting my emotions rule me. Then I hate the boss more for pissing me off and making me want to eat that stuff. So you are not alone in this battle. It's called self sabotoge. Neither bosses or food should hve that much power over us! so hang in there and feel free to vent with me instead of eating. try something soothing like a cup of tea or a low cal fruity drink that looks like a "real drink" if you get my drift. good luck, hang in there. Take back your power! Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

I saw your blog for today. Looks like you and BF are doing great!

My Mini-Challenge Activity for Sunday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - Total 20 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics

I'm feeling a lot of resentment and pressure, mostly about work, and I really want to eat. What I want to do is walk away from a bad situation, but I can't afford to quit and can't find any decent jobs to apply for. I haven't won the Powerball jackpot yet, so I think I just want to medicate myself with food. Bad all around, because not only do I want to eat, but I can't feel motivated to give my job my best anymore either.

Oh well. Tomorrow is another day.

Hi Marcie,

That is FANTASTIC that you put half your entree in a take-home box right away and split a dessert with your boyfriend. WAY TO GO! I think that's the kind of thing that will lead to ultimate success for you.

I agree that if you deny yourself sweets or other favorite foods, eventually you'll snap and go overboard. Having a little in a controlled situation is a wonderful plan.

Oh yeah, and even if you get discouraged and binge once in a while--that isn't throwing in the towel. Do we really expect that we're never, ever going to binge or overeat again? No. Well, at least I don't. What we DO expect is that as we gradually change our lifestyles for the better, we will get better and better at minimizing binges when they happen and having binges more infrequently, because we're finding other ways than food to meet our needs.

At least that's the plan...

4-7 inches of snow? No wonder you aren't walking on Sunday! I'll be curious to hear how you exercise indoors.

If you were curious, I have more info about My Fitness Coach for the Wii, from a customer review on Amazon.com:
"Not for Beginners: ...this game does a LOT of jumping, skipping, hopping, squats and lunges in the evaluation phase and the cardio workout. If you have hip, knee, or shoulder problems you may want to rent this first and try coming up with modifications for exercises you may have physical problems with."

I won't be buying THAT game any time soon!

My Mini-Challenge Activity for Saturday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - Total 20 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics

Hey, have you been getting your fruit in?

Also I saw in the main chat thread that you want to get/force yourself back into oatmeal. If you're interested, I have an oatmeal cereal muffin recipe that is essentially baked flavored oatmeal with oat bran and dried fruit. It's easy to make, the muffins have 125 calories each (130 if you sprinkle sugar on top--recommended), you can eat them on the go, and I came up with it when I didn't think I could face another bowl of oatmeal.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll send it to you in an email. (It makes 24.) I'm not posting it in SparkRecipes, because I didn't like their agreement that all recipes become their property and can be altered any way they want.

Happy snow day!

Hey Pam, I truly know that feeling! I get so frustrated when that scale doesn't move and I have been so good. It makes me ask my self why bother? Denying myself stuff I really enjoy eating and want to eat for what! the dang scale is not moving. So I am really hoping that between you and my RI walking buddy I will not get so discouraged and throw in the towel and go on a binge. We went out to dinner last night and I put half my entrée in a take out box as soon as my dinner got to the table. I did indulge in dessert but my boyfriend and I shared it. I find if I totally deny myself sweets it only makes me want them more and then I go totally overboard. So a little bit once a week in a controlled situation (not sneak eating in my car) gets me through the week. I am suppose to walk tomorrow but we are getting a snow storm tonight leaving 4 to 7 inches and lasting until early afternoon. But if I don't get to walk I will talk with my buddy and figure out something to do indoors to replace it, maybe use my mini-trampoline. I'll let you know what I end up doing. Keep your chin up and hang in there we can do it together! Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

Yeah, mastering SparkPeople is tougher than I expected. There is so MUCH stuff that it's hard to navigate around, even though it's actually laid out pretty well. I had a terrible time with my SparkPage.

I'm glad you figured out how to log your walking/fitness minutes on SparkAmerica. If you're going to do the time, you want to get the credit! While it isn't a miracle motivator, logging fitness minutes on SparkPeople DOES add a little extra push to do some exercise.

My Mini-challenge Activity for Friday:
Fruit - banana
Exercise - total of 20 minutes Wii Fit step aerobics

I saw that two people in the buddy challenge already lost 13 lbs each since January 4. That's really great for them! For me though, slow but steady will win the race--I hope. After all these years of dieting and failing, I realized something last weekend for the first time. When I start having that empty, hungry feeling that comes from dieting-level calories, my whole body feels like it is being drained. It doesn't matter if I'm eating a healthy, balanced diet--when I've cut back enough calories to lose 2-3 lbs a week, that feeling underlies everything. And I cannot lose the weight fast enough! Every time I get on the scale and don't see a weight loss, I feel angry and frustrated. I can FEEL the weight being drained away, so why doesn't that show up?!? No wonder I've always fallen apart after 50-65 lbs maximum. My patience just gives out.

I'm hoping that THIS time, a small reduction in calories and an increase in exercise will cause a slow, permanent weight loss. When I haven't been feeling hungry, nay, perhaps even feeling a little naughty because I haven't cut my calories much, I don't feel anger at the unmoving scale, because I'm "not doing much". So far, all 13 lbs lost have been a happy surprise. It's way too soon for me to feel smug about this different (for me) approach, but I am hopeful. We'll see.

Take care!

emoticon Hi Pam, Thanks for the info on the Wii. I just posted my weight to the buddy challenge. So here goes the fun! My walking buddy finally got it through my thick head how to log my walking minutes on Spark America. She wants us to log our minutes for our state.Which is the smallest and it is how we met. The state is RI. I have added her to my friends on my blog. She is rhodygirl. It is Friday night and I am beat. I don't think I will blog tonight. It is after 9pm here and I am fading fast. I'll check in tomorrow. Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,
I think the Wii and Wii Fit (if you can find it-hot Christmas item) would be a great use of a tax refund! The Wii game system costs $250 plus tax, Wii Fit costs $90 plus tax, and Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 with mat for the Wii is $80 plus tax.

I know what you mean about knees! My knees hurt and I take Advil once or twice a day for the pain. Stairs are very painful, getting down and up from the floor is pure misery, but the small stepping on the Wii Fit balance board doesn't bother me. I haven't talked to my doctor about my knees either, because I figure he'll just tell me to lose weight and then we'll talk.

I have a mini-trampoline too! Back in my 30's when I first started to have occasional knee trouble, I found that regular rebounding REALLY helped my knees in about 3 weeks. I think it built up the muscle around the knees with less impact. I use my mini-trampoline with the Wii Fit Basic Run. That way I'm not jarring my knees jogging on the floor and I get a better workout. Wii Fit Basic Run has Short(2 minutes), Long (3 minutes), and Island Lap (4 - 11 minutes depending on the route you get and your speed). Basic Run would be a nice way for you to get a little rebounding done without stressing your asthma and still complete something. (I find the sense of accomplishment is a HUGE motivation for me.)

So far, the mini-trampoline doesn't seeem to be helping my knees like back in the old days, but maybe it is--I just have worse knees and 100 more pounds on them so it takes a lot longer to get less improvement.

Another Wii game I've seen people rave about for fitness is My Fitness Coach. This doesn't sound appealing to me right now because it seems too much like conventional exercise, but here's what someone said in the Wii Exercise team:

"I have My Fitness Coach and LOVE it. It is different from Wii Fit because it is more of a regular gym type of workout. You start with a fitness assessment, and as you go through workouts, Maya (the trainer) asks how you are doing and will adjust the intensity of the workout. She will incorporate items you own, such as step, ball, hand weights and HRM. There is more variety as the more you workout, the more choices you have for location and music. The box says there are over 450 exercises (no you don't do them all in one workout! hehehe) and she varies each workout. You can choose your focus, cardio, flexibility, upper/lower body strength, etc... She recommends a workout type for you, but you can choose whatever you want. There are different time frames, from 15 min/workout on up. You don't need to have any other equipment (which is good if you are short on space) and the price is only a third of what Wii Fit is. I do love my Wii Fit and love to alternate days, use them both on the same day, or whatever I have time for."

I'll shut up now. Have a good sleep for our weigh-in tomorrow! I'm tempted to munch to have an easy couple pounds to lose, but I won't--I think.

Happy dreams,
~ Pam

Hi Pam, I think I am going to look into it. I will have a tax refund coming once I do my taxes and I just may spend it on me. I have a small spare bedroom (the one my stepson used to have)that I want to turn into an excercise room. I have a mini- trampoline but get winded really fast on it (asthma). I am also looking for some used equipment. There is a thrift store near me and once in awhile an excercise bike or some other piece of equipment will show up. I have recently been having trouble with one of my knees and I know if I mention it to my doctor he will say it is because of the weight. Well that is all for today, I will log my weight tomorrow (hopefully in the right place). Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

In the Challenge Forum folder is the January Challenge Forum thread--that thread where we first signed up for the Buddy Challenge. That's where we post our weights on Friday. I think our weights are pretty close, but they're gonna gradually go down anyway--so we won't have them much longer!

Wii in a mobile home that is very small... depends on how small. I used to live in a mobile home and I loved it! Anyway, if you have enough space in front of the TV (or can move a coffee table or something to clear the space) to make a square 6 ft x 6 ft or bigger, then you should have enough space for Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii. (5x5 would probably work too, except for the laying-on-the-floor exercises in Wii Fit. I avoid those--I can't get back up!) I probably have a 6x8 foot space in from of the TV & Wii, and I really don't need the extra 2 feet on the side.

A 6x6 square is probably okay for the Wii Sport game that comes with the Wii game system. Tennis and baseball involve swinging, so you don't want to be too close to anything breakable, like your grandmother's antique china (or your TV). Golf swinging isn't as wild. Bowling can use more of a runway toward the Wii. I have my Wii in the dining room (took over the dining room), and I use a bit of the kitchen to walk into the dining room to "throw the bowling ball". Nobody else who bowls on my Wii gets so carried away and uses so much space, though.

I love having my little "gym" right there in my home to turn on and exercise. If you can find the space and $$$, I think the Wii is awesome!

Hugs,
~ Pam

emoticon Hi Pam, Yeah your summary sounds about right. Oh and my weight is worst than yours. I'm having a little trouble finding my way around the site. But I will attempt to figure out where our weight goes in the forum. I think all bosses are idiots which is why I don't want to be one. My boss dishes out more negative critiscm than praise too. What really ticks me off is when others get away with stuff and the boss turns a blind eye. They say every dog has his day and I have a co-worker who I would really like to see get his. Any way you make the Wii sound like fun! I live in a mobile home which is very small do you think I have room enough to do excercises? Well, talk to you tommorrow, love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie,

No, it was "only" 3 AM my time when I went to bed. Big, ugly project for work. I dislike exercising, but right now I'm a lot more interested in getting in my exercise than in my job (bad for job security). I realized why tonight. With exercise, if I work hard I see progress and get positive reinforcement and praise. With my job, when I work hard I get told the client has changed his mind so do it over, yelled at, and absolute silence when I literally exhaust myself making a deadline in spite of everything. I need a new job...

I still haven't had a reply from "my" hypnotist. I don't think I'm going to sign up for the seminar if she doesn't get back to me about her approach.

That's awesome that you and your buddy walked for 30 minutes in the cold today! 30 minutes is a LONG time to exercise. (Well it is to ME, although I know it isn't for some people.) I break my exercise up into 2-3 small chunks or I'd feel overwhelmed and not exercise at all.

My current exercise of choice is the Wii--either Wii Fit or Dance Dance Revolution or both. I'm working out of my home right now, so my goal is to do at least 2 10-minute sessions of aerobics on the Wii each day. My goal is allow only one day a week that I do only 5 or 10 minutes as a rest day. (Now that I've learned the Wii Fit will praise me for not missing a day in 7 days, I don't want to miss a day!)

I THINK we post our weights in this thread here, but I'm not sure. I posed that question to the January Challenge Forum.

Okay. So...
1) On Friday we post our weights somewhere TBD.
2) Every day we report our fruit.
3) For my exercise, every day I should be reporting what I did on the Wii. Total for the week should be at least 125 minutes.
4) For your exercise, you report against your scheduled walking for a total of at least 60 minutes for the week.

Does that sound right?

Take care, you are doing SO GREAT!

emoticon Hi Pam, Yes I did walk with my buddy for 30 minutes in 29 degree weather. We were both proud of each other. The mini challenges sound good. When do you want to start couning the days? I think the challenge starts on Friday so how about we start the count then? Everyday we can tell each other what our fruit was. And 60 minutes for walking sounds doable to me. We should let each other our walking schedule and make eaach other accountable for whether we walked or not. Do we log our starting weights here or on the main challenge thread. Did you really go to bed at 4 in the morning or is there a time change invovled? I get on at night so I will chat tomorrow. Love ya Marcie

Hi Marcie!

Oh, after hearing how your hypnosis went and is going, I really wish I'd hear back from the hypnotist who's hold "my" hypnosis seminar. That sounds like it's really helping!

Setting our mind-challenges:
1) I like the "fruit-a-day" goal.
2) I like the consecutive days on our thread goal too!
3) Add an Exercise goal? I see you're walking with your walking buddy at lunch tomorrow/today. Maybe a goal of 60 minutes of exercise a week? 30 minutes? Something doable.

*yawn* I gotta go to bed! I'll probably "see" you tomorrow night.

emoticon Hey pam, Most of his suggestions were not real specific like calories or minutes. Just some about do not go thru drive thrus, park far away from the entrances to places, ask for a doggie bag when you are served your meal, portion control. He said it is all stuff our conscious knows but our sub-conscious sabotages us, so these things were put in our sub-conscious. And it really worked! We went out later in the day and my BF parked far from the door of where we were going. I asked him if he did it on purpose and he said he didn't even realiz he had done it. Cool huh? We sat tonight and listened to the CD about appetite control and no sooner than the guy said "you are totally relaxed" the BF commenced to snore! I had to conentrate to get myself badk into the trance, I wanted to laugh. I told him and he said I was full of it!Iam suppose to go walking on my lunch break tomorrow with my RI spark buddy at lunch time I'll let you know how that goes. One goal I have is fruit a day. Or we could see how many days in a row we chat in this thread. talk to you tommorrow. Oh I ususally get on at night because if I get on before work I end up late for work! Love ya Marcie

Marcie, I love the idea of going to your boyfriend's daughter's wedding and her not recognizing you! Although, the first thought that popped into my head is that if your faces are just too recognizable, you could always show up wearing masks.

When it's this cold out, I'll bet the hypnosis had a LOT to do with you going out for a 30-minute walk today. But YOU did it and you SHOULD feel proud! I'm glad you were able to find a walking buddy near you. An exercise buddy is a big help--especially as I hate exercising. I have my son, who doesn't exactly exercise WITH me, but we both have our exercise plans, and it's a quiet encouragement to see the other person exercising. He's really supportive without being critical.

Sooo... tell me about the hypnosis session! What was it like, what kind of suggestions did you get, and what did you boyfriend think of it? (That's GREAT that he went with you and you're doing this as a team.) Is there any follow-up, like a hypnosis CD, extra sessions, or phone support?

The hypnosis seminar I'm looking at provides a free hypnosis CD and lifetime free admission to any other weight loss seminars she has. The hypnotherapist has great credentials, but I want to know more about her approach before I commit my $59. (I've been burned before, as you know.) I emailed her office this weekend asking about her weight loss approach, but I doubt anyone will see the email before Monday. I hope soneone replies before the seminar fills up--it's just in a classroom at our high school. The instructions say to bring a pillow and a blanket. That makes me think I should bring a teddy bear and a snack, too.

This is the topic/thread for Marcie and Pam to chat and encourage each other during the January 2009 Buddy Challenge.

Sue mentioned the possibility of mini-challenges, but I'm not sure what those are. After looking at Sue's Buddy thread, it looks like mini-challenges are challenges we may create just for our own buddy team, to help motivate us. Wanna try that?
