Summing up for June - Purple team lost a total of 48 pounds for the month of June. Biggest losers for the month were Vicky (WANTS2CRUISE) with a total of 14 pounds, and Carol (KEDICAT) with a total of 13.2 pounds lost. Congrats to the purple team!

I've been tracking on the nutrition pages for a month now, keeping between 1400 - 1600 calories (for my weight) and it is really making a difference.
For many years I avoided calorie counting as it was too difficult - but the SparkPeople tracking make it much easier.

I read a tip for eating out or when you don't have time to write things down...take a picture with your cell phone, then you can refer to it when you are putting the food items in the tracker. And of course delete the photo when done. emoticon

Kat - You do not have to do the inches part with the weigh-in, but you can if you want too. We tried to add it as an option so we could recognize the people who might not be losing as much in weight, but were dropping the inches. I do some (waist, bust, hips) mpretty regularly for my own info, but don't do the whole measurement thing too often. Some people did not like doing it as part of the challenge so Kathy thoughtfully set it up as a separate thread for those who are being very intentional about those measurements. Many people find that because they are working out and building muscle which weighs more than fat, the scales may not move as quickly as those inches do, and that is important too.

Kat, under the challenges and games forum, there is a thread called, Let's Do Measurements, (or something like that). You will see on there what measurements we are doing. Then we total up all the inches lost from those measurements. Hope this helps.

Yvonne...I'm sorry for the loss of your aunt, but as you said her pain will be gone and she can be with Jesus. I know when my maternal grandmother died, she was in so much pain...she only wanted to go home.

Yvonne - Sorry about the loss of your Aunt. I'll remember you in my prayers. Don't worry about that pound. I found out over Memorial Day weekend how hard it can be to stick to your routine when you are out of town like that. You'll do better next week.

Which is most important - all three are important, but for me, since I am such a junk food junkie, the type of food is first. If I limit my choices to the healthiest available I do better. I am having a time getting 5 veggies and fruit. It doesn't seem like it should be this hard. Part of the problem is I hate salad, specifically the lettace. It is just a dressing holder for me :)
I work full time and eat out a lot. One of the best places for me is Captain D's. Any of the fish dishes you can get broiled instead of breaded and fried. So I get broccoli and a potatoe for the sides and it helps with the veggie/fruit count.

I just don't think you can separate those three things. Portion size and calories go hand in hand because if you don't control the portion size you are eating more calories. And if you are watching the portion size and calories but eating all the wrong kinds of foods, you can bring on other health issues. I just think it is important for us to eat healthy foods (veggies, fruits, lean protein, and whole grains) in correct portion sizes, thus limiting our calories, with plenty of exercise in whatever way we are able to lose weight. If you miss any of those aspects, your body just doesn't work as efficiently.

Just thought I would share something I learned the other day in a diabetes education class. I thought I knew everything about carbs and blood sugar....but I learned something new that day. Both the nurse educator and the nutritionist told us that the human body NEEDS about 130 grams of carbs a day to function well. IF we don't get them, our blood sugar gets out of whack...and our bodies start pulling sugar from our livers. The problem there is that the liver doesn't know when to quit most of the time, and just keeps pumping out the glucose. So....people who drastically limit carbs may find that they still have problems with their blood sugar readings, 'cuz the body is pulling uncontrolled amounts of glucose from the liver. Those of you who say you don't handle carbs well--and thus avoid them a lot, but are still having problems controlling your blood sugar.. may want to check with your doctors or diabetes educators about this info.

I have also found that the carbs lower in the glycemic index DO make a difference. If I eat regular pasta, my blood glucose reading shoots way up...if I use the whole grain stuff, it's not nearly as much of a change. Portion control is a biggie for me, too. My old "normal" portion of pasta or rice was about 5 times what I should have been eating...sometimes more. ACK!!!

I am not a medical professional, and I have no way of knowing your own situations, but I hope this will be be of help to someone.

I have done a little bit of that diet Kathy. I think it is pretty good when I can remember to limit my calories on the down days. Sometimes I forget in the morning, so then I slow way down in the rest of the day, so it works out in the end.

Pam after a year of trying to do different programs ...I have started the Alternate Day Diet (JUDDD). My body does not handle carbs well at all and I love them. The diet is 1 day up...1 day down. It seems to fit my weird lifestyle and is something I can handle more easily than any others. Since Art prepares meals and is the shopper...I have a better chance of maintaining on this plan. I keep track of my blood sugar and adjust my insulin accordingly. Check it out on my Spark Page.

Oh I forgot, my favorite evening snacks are baby carrots, or frozen or other fruit, or 20 unsalted mini pretzels.

Also, may not do as good this week. We went out to celebrate the last day of school with a couple of friends. Went to Olive Garden and didn't even try to make good choices. Will be back on track tomorrow.

Pam - I 'm not following a specific diet, although a few years ago I went to a place called FormYou3 and did pretty well, so I do sort of loosely base my eating around their plan. I actually am a very boring eater. The plan gave a lot of different choices, but I found myself repeating many things that are on the choice list that I liked and had simple preparation.
For breadfast I have one of these things: 2 hard boiled eggs and 1 slice of whole wheat toast, or 1 slice of whole wheat toast, or a pack of Quaker Weight-Control Oatmeal. I also have a cup of skim milk and a piece of fruit which is usually a banana. For lunc most days I have 3 oz. of grilled or baked chicken with a salad and uesually have a 4 small club crackers with my salad. I always pack another piece of fruit, but most commonly eat it for an afternnon snack. I do get a little more variety with dinner, sometimes trying out an SP recipe, on Friday's I eat 1 pice of fried fish which I love, but a lot of days I have chicken or a grilled lean ground beef patty. I usually eat 2 starches with my dinner (1c. or rice or pasta or a baked potato. I often cook some fresh or frozen vegetables, but sometimes have salad again.
I also have been exercising a lot. I do almost all water exercises right now. I have arthritis in my knees as well, but in the water I feel like Wonder Woman. (Wrote a blog on that a little while back.) Today is June 6, and I already have 375 fitness minutes for the month. So I am getting lots of exercise. Hope this helps. After my first week or two, I have maintained about a 4 pound a week weight loss averageevery week I actually stuck to my program. Last week I was off due to going out of town for my nephew's wedding, and I didn't behave well out there. So this week coincidentally, my five pound loss was losing that pound and my four more. I don't know how long that average will last, but I'm enjoying it right now. If you have any other questions, just ask.

Carol, thanks for sharing your program. I eat alot like that, but for some reason my body does not handle carbs as well as others. I am diabetic and have other health issues as well, so maybe that's why.

Well, I can't speak for Vicky of course...but here is my "program:. Currently I do not exercise a lot as I have been having a lot of problems with arthritis in my knees...but I do try to get out a little bit every day, even if it is just to walk around behind the shopping cart at the store. The diet I am following is the basic carb-counting diet for diabetics....I was told that I was at high risk for type 2 diabetes, so my doctor is treating me as though I had it. I monitor my blood glucose and watch my carbs. Most adult women can have between 30g and 45g of carbs per meal, and about 15g-20g carbs in one or two small snacks per day. My calorie intake, as calculated by the Spark People folks, is between about 1250 and 1550 calories per day. Most days I stay within that, a few have been a bit higher (thanks to graduation parties and a family reunion picnic..LOL). I drink my 8 glasses of water per day (and that isn't that hard....most of us don't use 8 oz. glasses, which is what the measurement is calling for...so if I put away 4 glasses using my tall iced tea tumblers, I've hit my goal. I probably take in more most days. I don't use the meal plans generated by SP...they even say that diabetics shouldn't use them. I just try to get a good balance and keep my carbs as healthy as I can (whole grain breads and pastas, fruits and veggies, etc.).

Hope that answers a few questions. I don't expect that I will keep losing this fast, but it has been an encouraging start.

Wow! Vicky and Carol, you dropped a bunch this week. I want to know what your secret is. Do you exercise a lot or is there a special diet you're on or what? I wasn't able to weigh this morning for an official weigh-in this week, but I will weigh in tomorrow morning. I hope that is OK. But, please, really, tell us your strategy.

Hey everybody! I hope you all are all ready for the big weigh in day tomorrow. I guess that was a poor choice of words, when I said "big weigh in day" Anyway, I hope we are all doing well on our journey towards weight loss, but even more than that, I pray that everyone is doing well physically and emotionally, even if you don't lose any weight. Before you weigh in, please be assured that if you don't lose any weight this week, or not as much as you would like, that does not make you a failure in the least. We'll just try again next week and hope and pray for the best. Together we will grow healthier, so I encourage everybody to refrain from beating yourself up, because that only gives you bruises.
