Actually, yes and no. My dad is a diabetic and my mother has several chronic illnesses. I'm actually not sure if my dad's insulin needs to be refridgerated or not. But they should be fine, they've apparently been spending most of the day at my brother's apartment with his family, and only going home to let the dogs out and sleep.

On the historical note, I had never heard of the candy bomber, however I adore American and British WWII Bomber history. I got involved with the history aspect playing an old Avalon Hill game call B-17 Queen of the Skies, the group I play with recreates 3 seperate flights, in historical order that the 8th Bomber Wing actually made. This year we flew the 9 Oct 1943 Mission to Marienburg, the 10 Oct 43 to Munster and 14 Oct 1943 to Schweinfurt (aka Black Thursday). After we play the game (and determine the winners) we actually sit around and discuss the historical aspects of the mission, the lives lost, that sort of thing. And it actually started becoming a tradition that if anyone finds something associated with B-17s during the year, we bring that along with us and place it on a prize table for everyone to choose from. (that way the guy who came in last gets something along with the guy in first). Over the 5 years I've amassed a collection of books about the different bombing crews who took part in the missions. I will definately be adding the Candy Bomber's book to my collection!

Thank you for the awesome lead!!

Are they in good health, no need for refrigeration of meds or anything? If they are in good health that is actually something to be thankful for, but otherwise that might move them higher on a list. It won't seem like that long in the scheme of things, and should make for some stories to tell. Are they living in the house?

My dad actually flew for the Berlin airlift, but he never really talks about it. Mom on the other hand has lots of stories about her years in the service. If you have ever heard of the "candy bomber", Gail Halvorsen, www.konnections.com/airlift/candy.ht
m
she dated him for a while before she met my dad and married him.

I was watching on the news that some of the cut off communities are getting airlifts of food/water and other supplies a la Berlin-style.

As for my parents, it looks like their power may not be restored until Friday! Someone came by today and cut back the tree from the house, but the electric company has basically said that the soonest they could be there was sometime Friday, because they aren't a "priority"

Let's pray it is sooner rather than later. I understand that dilemma of the tree (we have one that threatens our garage and probably the back of our house. I'm glad they weren't hurt.

I finally got through again to my folks, Mom sounded exhausted but said she felt blessed. People from the church with a man that does that kind of clean up will be there Friday to clear the basement and clean up. They don't talk about it, but Western Mass. is a flooded mess also. Much of the water from VT comes their way. Many places in both states are cut off because of bridges and roads damaged or completely washed away. I'm sure VT is a mess as so much of the state has roads (and not just mountain passes) that aren't even paved. I lived there for a short while and traveled around the state and was surprised by that.

It does seem that in a lot of places that it wasn't the storm itself that caused much of the damage (at least in PA, NJ, NY and VT) but that the flooding from the rain is the problem.

Currently my parents are without power or phone or cable or anything. The tree behind their house (that they'd repeatedly complained about to the property owner whose land it was on) finally fell on the house! It broke the bathroom window and ripped all the lines away from the house. but thankfully the house is a giant brick fortress. (reality: It's double-walled brick built in the 1890's or so) But with so much other damage in town, and the fact that my parents are the only ones on the whole block that lost power, they won't get fixed until sometime later this week.

The good news: Irene is outside of the US,

The bad news: The tragic flooding in the VT and Western MA region. www.masslive.com/

Please pray for those in these areas. My parents were evacuated as the waters started to come up over their driveway. They are in their late 80's and both have physical problems. My poor mom has so much pain and Dad has been getting more unsteady as time goes on. They had a rough week before the hurricane and were really worn out. Last night neither slept in the strange bed that they had. Thankfully it wasn't just a cot, but still it was not a good night. Mom forgot her sleeping pill and took a Lasix by mistake and was up 10 times to use the bathroom, My dad fell 2 times during the night and the second time hurt his shoulder. Fortunately the water was confined to the basement, but that is still plenty of a problem...hopefully their church members will be able to help them clean up the mess as many have experience from sending several teams down to help clean up after Katrina. Pray the foundation is strong. It really doesn't look like it is, but it stood strong during the 1938 hurricane flooding which was worse.

Pray for my dear GD who actually seems fine at this time, but has gone through the tornado in Springfield, MA at the end of her school year and now the flooding at the beginning of the next. Can't imagine what kind of stories will be written about "What I did this summer."

Edited to add: Also many of the bridges have been damaged and many communities are very hard to get around as well as cut off from other areas. They have closed a part of the major interstate because the bridges, that leaves the only other one to get to the hospital is really a much older bridge that recently was worked on, but will have a much greater volume of traffic on the road if even that road isn't shut down due to flood damage (it had been underwater yesterday).

Nope, unfortunately I'm still on restrictions... or rather I should say again. Everything was doing good and healing well... but then the incision on my right side popped the internal stiches and has split open. I'm on restricted duty until I no longer need to bandage it (it's bleeding, and raw and trying to fight infections. It's not pretty and quite frankly worries me about how big the scar is going to be now... but I'm really hoping it'll heal well anyway

I have been plodding through my inbox and after deleting so many things I wanted to read I finally got to open up the Spark things and I'm still not through them all. (I don't like being away from the computer for so long) I loved that you shared your daughter's words. I don't get to hear all the stories of my dear GD's and It is like getting a little extra from you. That was so sweet. It has been a while since she said it are you off restrictions yet?

"Pick Me UP!!" She said it, clear as a bell and holding her arms out for me to pick her up!!

And I asked, "do you want mommy to pick you up?"

And she tells me "YEAH!"

hehe.... YAY!!! (sadly though, her daddy had to pick her up instead emoticon , i'm still restricted in lifting)

But still emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My Little girl is getting so big!!

yeah, I've been home since 1pm the day of the surgery. I can't lift anything, and can't put my arms above shoulder level. And I have drains that need to be emptied 3 times a day. hopefully the drains will come out tomorrow. and they'll take most of the dressings off and we can see how things are healing... I hurt and am stiff sore and bruised, but overall doing pretty darn good. My mom is staying with us this week to help out and then my father in laws girlfriend will be here next week to help as well. The only thing that's really getting to me is that I can't cuddle the baby for a while.

I'll certainly be keeping all those that need healing in my prayers. May the heart beat strong and be truly accepted as her own. Ruth may you heal beautifully and not be in too much discomfort. I, for one, am glad you posted, but totally surprised to see you were up to posting. I think that is a very good sign!

I meant to post this earlier. I found out this past Thursday that a young woman in my town, the daughter of a friend of mine, received a much-needed heart transplant on June 25. This is her second heart. She had her first heart transplant when she was 14; that heart lasted 12 years. Now she has a new one. She and her family are elated. Hoping and praying for a healthy and speedy recovery.

in keeping up with the good news trend! On July 5th I'll be having a little bit of surgery. On the recommendations of my doctor and my physical therapist (Shoulders, neck and hips) I will be having a breast reduction. It's something I've been trying to have done since I was in college, but before any insurance company would pay for it they kept asking me to document my problems... well finally got the doctors on board and it's finally happening.... (It's one thing to tell a doctor you have trouble using gym equipment because of your size, it's another when the physical therapist tells the doctor that you are having trouble using the handbike because of physiology). It'll be about a 1 month recovery... then I can begin to get myself back on track!! and since i'm shameless about plugging it! if you'd like to follow along the story check out the blog here..... pinupinthemaking.blogspot.com/

I have 2 stories to share!

The first happened this morning as I was driving home. I was stopped at a light and was watching a local pizza place open. This young gang-banger dressed kid was starting to walk in when he noticed a much older couple walking up behind him! He stopped and waited for them and then held the door to let them in ahead of him. He even smiled, and was really quite sheepish about the whole encounter... It's things like that which give me hope for the future!

The second is in regards to my family. As some of you guys know, my husband's orders ended yesterday, and he is now unemployed and since I've been unable to get a job as well we're in a really tight spot right now. Well last week, Tim took the test for the PA Dept of Corrections, and we got the results yesterday... he placed 2nd in the state! Which puts him right up at the top of the hire list. But that can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months until he could be back working. So we've been on the look out in the meantime. Well this morning he got a call from the guy that runs the tech services for the National Guard at Ft Indiantown Gap. He wanted Tim up there ASAP to fill out some paperwork because he as a tech position that just opened up and he needs to fill it, and Tim fits perfectly. He even told hubby that this would get his foot in the door job-wise so that if a permanent Job comes up he'll be right at the top of the hire list there as well! He can start the temp job in 3 weeks (just when his annual training ends anyway)

I just really feel so blessed today, I've been praying very hard the past few weeks for God to just give us a way. And wow have our prayers been answered! He does really provide... in such unexpected ways! Thank you GOD

That is some very good news on all fronts. Cars can be replaced-repaired but bodies take a little longer.

I just can't help but share some news today.

My nephew (who was born about a month early) and beset with complications since birth was to the heart specialist last week. Today they got the results from the tests. The whole in his heart is almost closed and he doesn't need to be seen for another 6 months!

And in other news today, Elizabeth (my daughter) and I were involved in a car accident today. Thankfully neither we nor the other driver were injured! and the truck is pretty darn OK all told. I am so thankful we decided to go with the huge Ford Explorer, all it needs is the bumper and grill replaced, but the other driver will probably have her car totalled out. Thankfully everything is covered by car insurance, and the other driver and her dad were very nice as well.

That is good news about Elizabeth, just be careful to not give her too much
especially if it manifests a problem in the diaper area.
I had the blessing of having about 25 Robins land in my yard the other day. It really lifted my spirits to see this sign of Spring!

Hi Everyone! I'm so excited.... I've got wonderful news. We took Elizabeth to the allergist and she HAS NO FOOD ALLERGIES (or pet allergies)!!! What the Dr told me was that she has a sensitivity to certain fruits and citric acid.... but that she'll outgrow it eventually.... and in the meantime keep giving her all the fruits that she loves, just in limited quantities until her body gets used to it! We are so happy because she ADORES oranges and under the pediatrician's advice we haven't been giving ANY to her.... and she's been miserable! So today we celebrated with half an orange at breakfast!! YIPPEEEEEE!!!

I set this to a sticky topic...I agree...I think it's a good one to have, especially in the midst of all the doom and gloom we're all subjected to on a daily basis. It's great to have reminders of how blessed we really are inspite of it all...

That is AWESOME. Praise God for ALL he does for all of us. Amen. emoticon
God gave what he knows they needed, though it wasn't a brand new car, it is new to them. Thank you Jesus. emoticon Um excited for them also.

God recently answered a prayer for our family too. Mother whom I solely take care of and whom lives with us (DH & I), Got the MUCH needed help from someone else for her needs to get around better in the house. & She is getting a ramp put on front of our house in the Spring. thank you Jesus. I pray now her Medicaid comes through, cause with all the Meds she is on now, 3 others 2 of which are new, we have to pay Out of pocket for and Medicaid is NEEDED for her more so now than ever. Yes, she has Insurance, that isn't as good as it used to be for her. We all know by now, that Insurances all over the map are chaniging. & We know why and whose to blame, BUT alll in all, GOD is in control. Bless his holy name.

When somthing is of God, NOTHING can stop it. Amen..

I am nothing without God.

The good news I have is how God answered a prayer for a different car for my youngest daughter's family. I had gone out to visit this past November and the only vehicle they had was her husband's and she had to wait on him to go anywhere or find someone to take her and her daughter places. The car they have is OLD (1963) and in poor shape, though her husband thinks it is great. He loves old cars and puts down newer models. His car has 1 seatbelt on the front passenger's side, so the baby rode in her car seat there, while my daughter rode in the back. (It is actually good that didn't go to too many places.

I'd been praying for God to bless them with a safer vehicle that would fit the requirements my SIL had for a car, but would also fit my DD's. Last week that prayer was answered with a 1983 BMW (I know it sounds old, but it is in wonderful shape and low miles for the age). They were able to pay cash for it and found out afterwards that it was worth 3 to 4 times what they had paid for it if it had been purchased at a BMW place rather than at a Honda dealership. He works for a car parts place and can get any parts that it may need in the future. I am grateful for the way God answered may prayers.

My Brother and sister-in-law seem to have had a puppy come into their lives. It was starving and teething and broke the skin on her hand and so they were told to quarantine the dog to check for rabies as they have no history on it. I don't think I have heard them talk with such excitement in a very long time. This was the brother that had the stroke earlier in the fall. He and his wife never had kids and it seems that this puppy is filling something that they had been missing. Max seems to be an answer to prayer also.

Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Ohhh, now I'm really glad I waited till last to read this thread again! A beautiful end to a great day!!
Kitty, you go girl! Good luck with James.
Yeegads, Blessing for a new job for you hubby! and awesome that everythng is working out with them!
Chris, I totally understand, I've been in a similar relationship with my brother. It blew me away in December when he came to my daughter's birthday party, and he held my daughter and played with her! After everyone left I cried so hard. I pray for healing and mending in that relationship..... It may just take a while.... but at least you've had a start.
About the weather..... Keep looking up, I heard on the radio today that here in the North-East that it may hit "Mild" temps come Sunday and Monday! Mild as in high 40's and low low barely cracking 50! If that's the case I'm going to be strapping my missers into her Stroller and we're going to walk.... somewhere! over the river and through the woods hopefully! even if I get lost lol

Ruth, Congratulaitons on your test. That is great news. Keep up the good work. I'll be cheering you on.

Dumbskitty, Sounds like the Man Upstairs is trying to tell you something. You deserve to be happy. I'll say a little prayer for you that you find happiness.

So my good news is my husband finally found a job and he is very happy and enjoys it. He gets to work from home and at his own pace.
The other good news is that my son's business (web hosting and design developement) is really starting to pick up.

Life is good right now, God has blessed us.

I think that is GOOD news! It is rather cool the way God orchestrates thing in our lives.

Would be kinda neat if things work out for both of you. wouldn't be an awful lot of explaining to each other when you have your "moments" , just a knowing look passing between each of you. Probably good for both of you to be able to talk about it and work through it.

Good luck!

I have some good news too...I think...

When I was in the military, I met this really interesting guy from TN while in AIT (which is the "job training" the army sends you to after basic). After AIT was over, he (name's James btw...) wanted to come up to North Dakota to visit me "on the way" to his duty station in Ft. Drum, NY (yeah...cuz ND is RIGHT on the way from TN to NY). But when I got home after AIT I had started dating this other guy (who turned out to be a total loser.) I didn't know what to say to James' request to stop on by and see me, so I just said nothing and lost contact with him...Skip ahead about a year...I was in Iraq...in the middle of nowhere...occasionally I'd run into people that I'd met at basic or AIT. Each time I met someone from AIT I asked them if they had run into James. No one had. Then one day, as I was leaving the PX I heard some guy calling my name. I turned and it was James! Right there, in the middle of nowhere. I can't even TELL you all how surreal that was. I don't remember at ALL what we talked about, I just remember feeling really thrown for a loop that of ALL the people I could run into, I'd run into the person I MOST wanted to see. It kind of freaked me out a little bit too...I mean, what are the chances??

So anyway, we stayed in contact for a little while after that, but we both had a REALLY hard time adjusting when we got home. And we lost contact with each other again. But he's THE guy that I've just never been able to totally put out of my mind.

This past December he showed up on fb. And it's like that "spark" is still there. We've both had a pretty rough time of it, and he has some pretty bad PTSD issues (he had to do some pretty bad stuff over there). The first time he called me we spent over 8 hours on the phone, just kind of catching up!

Anyway, he's going to come up and visit me later this spring...and if that goes well, he said he'd consider looking for a job up here...SO...that's MY "good news." I'm kind of excited to see where this might go. I don't really believe in coincidences, and it's just TOO unbelievable how he just keeps popping up into my life over the years. I really have to wonder about that....lol...

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. --Ephesians 6:12

Barb, I think the temps are supposed to get a bit higher for us as well this weekend. It's a balmy 11 degrees right now, up from 5 this morning. Waiting a bit before I go for a run. Ah winter in New England!

Good for you!

My Son came home for Christmas, I was real happy about that as he "disappeared" from family for about 4 years. I was overjoyed! He IS returning calls still.

Pretty sad commentary on the fact that no one is posting! Not a whole lot of good news in the world.

With all the doom and gloom in politics lately, I was wondering if anyone had any good news to share? a thought or a story or anything happy?

for myself, I started taking an English Comp class last week, and got a 95 on my first essay. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the class and my final research paper. I'm hoping that if this class goes well I'll be able to take other more difficult classes and work toward my degree. Hugs, Ruth
