Some trainers believe body weight exercise's are the best way to tone your body. Although i think this is good advice espeshally if you can't use weights, i still have to do my weight training, i think i enjoy it too much not to do it. I'm on between 3kg- 6.5kg for my toning sessions, repeating the same move a few times gradually increasing the weight.
I definatly think toning is fun!

You did the right thing in asking your doctor about using weights. But there are other ways to strength train without using weights. Repetitive movements can help. and when you walk swinging your arms back and forth can help the toning process.
I do exercises without weights because I'm afraid of injuring my fistula arm (the arm that enables dialysis). I asked the doctor today, should I use weights, and he said, "if you're in doubt, don't use weights".
My arms are quite defined thought but I still have underarm flab.......sigh!
I heard the same thing and have experienced around with this process in the past. And it has proved to be true. I had a definite amelioration in my muscle tone after 3 weeks. But you must remember to slowly increase your weights over time. Other wise you won't challenge your muscles anymore.
Before my surgery I was using 5 pounds weight to tone with, but tomorrow is my first day back and I will be using 2 pound weight and see what that does. If it doesn't hurt or challenge me enough I will switch to 3 pounds and so on.

When we hear toning we automatically picture someone lifting weight and sweating. But the truth about toning has been greatly ignored.
Although lifting weights is a good way to keep toned, there are other ways to accomplish this "TASK" 1- Walking with added ankle and wrists weights: These small 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 pound weights can be strapped around your wrists and ankles for added resistance. This will force your muscles to work a little hard with every stride.
2- Lifting heavy is not the only way to get toned : Lifting heavy weights is one way to get toned, but lifting lighted weights can have the same effects. And is always best to start off with smaller weights when beginning a strength training program.
3- Mixing it up: Mixing up workout exercise program is the best solution for keeping your body from hitting a weight loss plateau. I always introduce new exercises into my routine every 3 weeks or so.
