July 3rd challenge


Take 3 minutes to write yourself a short note of encouragement without using the word "should."



How to do it

Grab a pen and paper and take a few moments to write yourself a motivational message. Steer away from using phrases like, "I shouldn't be late to work this week," or, "I should exercise three times this week." Instead, use your note as a positive reminder of how a particular task or goal will help you. Use phrases such as, "I feel less rushed when I make it to work on time," or, "I will have more energy if I exercise two mornings this week."

Why it matters

The way you talk to yourself in your head can have a big impact on reality. The word "should" can sneak in when you are trying to change something about yourself. Instead, it can have the opposite effect, leading you to focus on your own shortcomings. Limiting your use of the word "should" and talking to yourself positively may change the way you look at your goals.

July 2nd Challenge

Lie on your back and move your legs in a marching motion for a count of 10.

How to do it

Lie down on your back. (You can place a pillow under your neck or hips for comfort.) Rest your arms at your sides, palms toward the ground. Bend your knees and lift your legs so your shins are parallel to the ground and your knees are in line with your hips. Slowly lower your left foot until it nearly touches the ground. Return your left leg to the starting position. Then, lower your right foot to the ground. Count to 10 while you continue to move your feet in a marching motion.

Why it matters

You will feel this marching move in your abdominal muscles, a major part of your body's core. Exercising your core creates a strong link between your upper and lower body. This can improve your posture, prevent back pain, and make it easier to do house or yard work.

July 1st Challenge

Make a list of contact information for the health care providers you have seen this year.


How to do it

List the names of the doctors, specialists, and other health care professionals you've seen in the last six months, such as dentists, urgent care providers, or therapists. Add their contact information to the list, including phone numbers, email addresses, and fax numbers. Note why you see each doctor or the reason for your last appointment.

Why it matters

This list will be a handy reference the next time you have a question for your doctor or need to make an appointment. You can also bring the list along to your next doctor appointment in case your providers need to contact each other for information. By thinking of your doctors as a "team" and yourself as a team member, you can get the most out of your appointments and better coordinate your care.
