The only thing I can do for a mini-vacation is pack a lunch basket and go to the park. It just gets me away from the house.

How do you relax?

Christmas dinner is a duplication of Thanksgiving. Turkey with all the trimmings, plus a ham if enough folks are gathering.

Do you place fancy wrapped presents under your Christmas tree before Christmas Eve?

Depends on how tired we are. Sometimes we watch the ball drop in New York on TV, and then stay up to watch New Years come in around the world. We quit when we get sleepy.

We do not go out on New Year's Eve. We do sometimes have dinner with the family on New Year's Day.

No, I usually do not see New Year's as a fresh start. I don't make New Year's resolutions.

I do not send out cards, but my DH does the list. I think he whittles some out and adds new, but not by whether or not we hear from them. He just sends to folks he wants to say, "Hello!" to year after year. He took over the cards when i was teaching full time. He likes to do it, but I do not.

Will you put up outdoor decorations at your home? Just a door wreathe or more? Any lights? Any of those blown up lighted free standing decorations?

Good question-Bob doesn't do any holidays.
He does do Christmas cards because my handwriting isn't legible. I give money for birthdays and Christmas as gifts. What do you buy children these days, it seems like they have everything.. My younger son bakes for us, separate items for Bob and myself. I still can't stand long enough to cook.
This is a long way from my childhood or raising my children.

Do you drive around and view the house docorations?

I sincerely try to keep frozen homemade left-overs in my freezer for those days when I am called into the Gallery, or substituting at the last minute.

Right now I have spaghetti with meat sauce. chicken rice casserole, tuna/noodle casserole, and chili. All of these dinners were made fresh by me originally. I tend to cook purposely for at least two days. Creating dinner is a chore, as far as I'm concerned, so I create enough for multiple days. Joe has no problem with leftovers, so it works for us.

Tonight we enjoyed homemade beef/vegetable (with potatoes) soup. With the homemade soup, we had cornbread thawed from the freezer that I baked several days ago.

What is the first thing you do towards Christmas?
Like do you decorate the house first, or address Christmas cards, or shop early for presents, make homemade gifts (or start them), or create bake ahead or fix ahead food items? What's first on your list?

Yes, and no.

I can swim comfortably for a long, long time and truly enjoy myself. I have never, ever learned to put my face in and out of the water to breathe as I do the breast stroke. I always swim on my side or back so that my claustrophobic face is not in the water. I can doggy paddle forever. We owned a pool for five years, and I taught my children to swim on their sides, but their father had to teach them to breathe by turning their heads in rhythm with their breast strokes.

I do not dive well either. I can dive, sort of, and avoid belly smackers, but not gracefully.

What do you enjoy the most about your favorite season of the year?

I left the farm and moved into town with my older sister when I was 17, watched her 4 children while she worked and worked a different shift as a carhop while she was at home. Her AF hubby was stationed in Iceland and she was no allowed to go with him. I married 3 month's shy of my 19th birthday after my sister rejoined her hubby when they moved to Alaska for 6 years.

Nancy, have you considered listening to books on CD? They have a wide selection at our local library and even have a bookmobile that will deliver if you are homebound, in our town. I would feel very lonely if I could not read a book.

It's hard to decide on a favorite seasoning. I stir fry a lot and use a lot of garlic, so I guess that would have to be my favorite but I also like a LOT of fresh chopped onions or herbs.

Lola you are right though.....basil really puts life into a nice salad! I'm thinking of starting a large planter of herbs and see if they will strive in my south window for the winter. My basil did not survive the hot temperatures but my rosemary is still struggling along.

Another hard choice! I love fruit and usually can't walk out of the store with a good variety. Among the ones I consider staples are apples, kiwi, pineapple and bananas. The plums are great this last couple of weeks so right now they are my 'favorites'. I'll eat my fill before they start selling the ones that are hard and bitter again.

What is your favorite breakfast!

My latest love is the fresh basil in the garden. In salads. Chopped and sprinkled on tomato slices. Leaves in a sandwich with the lettuce. Wish there was a way to keep that fresh basil taste going through the winter, though.

I'm thinking I never left "home." Home was always where I was. BUT I got married at 18 ... that's too early but I picked the right man - or he picked me. To hear him tell it, he chased me until I quit running.

I've always been terrified of earthquakes and hurricanes are extremely destructive due to all the tornado's it sets off on the outskirts, as well. We always had at least one horse...sometimes 2 when I was growing up. Sweet animals.

The largest city I've ever lived in is less than 2 miles from me....Victoria, TX, and I'm happy to be living back out in the boonies.... nice and quiet.

At what age were you when you left home?

I prefer hardwood floors.....alas I have carpeting in all but the kitchen, laundry and entry.....but if I ever replace the carpeting it will be all woodgrain tile.

I eat out one or two nights a week. Either Red Lobster or Texas Roadhouse. Once in a great while, I give myself the treat of fried chicken (hangup from being a country girl) but I nibble on fresh fruits and veggies during those days so I don't go over on fats. Eat broiled at Red Lobster so that's not so bad.
If I really had a thing for being on the water, I might enjoy a houseboat. I've seen some that are very nice indeed. I like to spend a day at the beach now and then, but don't think I would like 'living' on the water.

I much prefer swimming and if I had a pool, I would be in it every day that the temperatures were over 80 F.

I have lived where a hurricane hit. The windiest was Carla, the wettest was Beulah with 8 inches of rain in 2 hours....water sloshing under the floorboards of my house as cars drove by on the highter street. Claudette uprooted 5 huge trees on my place, and I'm not looking forward to the next one...whatever it's name is.

Have you ever owned a horse?

Carpet because I'm barefoot so much of the time. My feet are touchy and tile is too hard on the bumpy joints.

How often do you eat out? Fast food or fine dining?
(guess that's two questions)

Houseboat question is interesting. Son that is visiting us right now has bought a houseboat in Portland, OR -- and it is in the process of having the float raft rebuilt - had to pull it to the dry dock to work on it. They will be completely remodeling it - a large 2-story home that is bigger than our house.

Lola - in Oregon

Today is a good day to have a good day.

A Houseboat, YES
Matress--what I am sleeping on now, to much money to invest now. I have firm innerspring mattress.

Do you prefer carpet, wooden, or tile floors?

I've never gone zip lining....I don't think. I'll have to look into that since I don't know what it is:o)

I've never roller bladed but my grandchildren had several....they were always on them and never gave me a chance to try:o)

I've never ice skated but I loved plain roller skating at our local rink and spent a couple of years with my friends enjoying learning how to spin, dance etc.

I rode a lot of horses when I was younger and even helped with cutting cattle a couple of times on my sisters ranch, but it's been awhile. Would love to do some riding again.

I love to watch diving and swimming...can't decide which I like most.

I'm sitting here pondering whether I'm optomist, pessimist or antagonist. At any rate....I'm usually pretty content and hope to encourage others to be also.

I prefer the beach.

And I love swimming in either the ocean or a pool....I just love swimming!

Do you drink tap water or bottled water? Approximately how much do you drink a day?

Self help books? I like philosophy but sometimes I feel like it's too late for help for myself:o)

I use a pedometer when I power walk because I have it set on a long step. If I wear it around my house and property I can clock up about 7 to 10 miles when I working in the yard or deep cleaning. And sometimes I'm walking at a trot:o)

Mark Twain aka SC is also one of of my favorites. I also enjoy James Whitcomb Riley .

I watch almost anything I can about WWII but since I am continually working on family history, I've read a good deal about the Revolution (since my GGGGGGG or however many 'greats' ago that it was) grandfather came over to claim land for the King and fought in the Revolution instead of opting to go back to England. Some pretty interesting stuff.

Do you keep a journal?

TV--as a young child my mother would close me in a room where she would sleep and I don't know what I did. My siblings were at school. As I got older, I was always afraid my father would come in. Need noise around me all the time now.

My favorite ingredients are greens, colorful cabbage, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, onions, scallions, croutons, seeds, nuts, and spray-on balsamic vinegar if I use any dressing. I like to add a small amount of shredded cheese on the top, too.

We still are working out of the dormitory teeny little fridge, but we bought apples, oranges, grapes, and bananas along with a new gallon of milk last night. Dinner tonight will be a challenge to keep the calories low and filling. I love salads, but have no room for all the great veggies in this baby sized fridge.

Do you prefer background music or TV in an empty house, or just the the outdoor sounds that filter in?

Too much. First thing in the morning I read the paper with my coffee. I'd say about half an hour on facebook, checking for messages from the kids and grandkids right after I get a load washing or vacume. Then I do a few chores and check in here at Spark People, sometimes to read an article or check out an exercise video from my email box. If the video interests me, I kick the desk chair back and work along with the video. I think the longest I sit at the computer is when I'm doing a recap on the chat, but even then I have to get up and move, or my shoulder starts hurting (posture, I 'm sure) or my legs get restless. Probably 3 hours tops....while jumping up and down to get little chores done inbetween. The only time I might sit for a solid hour is if I am totally intrigued with a good book (not lately).

Lew, I do not watch chick flick, SHOCK. I watch mostly the news or weather stories, and occasionally I watch Doctor Oz, to see if he has any new natural methods of handling health issues. If I'm not dashing around doing little house chores, I'm spying on my grandchildren on facebook...the rest of the time that my eyes are open, I am reading, quilting, sewing, doing research on family history. I don't like to sit much and Fritz never takes his hand off the remote control:o) If he should fall asleep, I might watch a show or two of Reba McIntires show:o)

Nancy, I enjoy Chinese occasionally but am normally a meat and potatoes kind of person who has at least one multi veggie/nuts salad a day

What are your favorite ingredients to make a salad????

I go to bed shortly after the 10 o'clock news every night unless we go out dancing or to do karaoke.

I LOVE getting together with my grandchildren!! I think my happiest times were when they younger ones came to spend 2 weeks with me in the summer and we arranged sleepovers, trips to the beach and other fun stuff with the more local cousins. They kind of forget about you after the boyfriend, girlfriend stage sets in and then start visiting again after they get married. With 2 married, I'm waiting for the exciting news that they have decided to start providing me with great grandbabies!!

My absolutely favorite way to relax is sit in my swing under the oak tree and read.

I drink water most often and usually have a cup 1/2 of coffee in the morning and one cup of either hot tea or coffee mid afternoon. Water is absolutely the best.

Can't decide if my favorite seafood is boiled shrimp or fried catfish, and I really do eat a great deal more shrimp. Catfish is my cheater food.

Do you take vitamin/mineral suppliments?

Favorite way to relax .... ever so many. Love to walk along the beach. A day with the sand and sea does wonders for me. Love to sit by a mountain stream - watching the ripples tumble and roll. I guess my favorite way to relax is being outdoors where there are no chores, no phones, no demands or responsibilities.

Good job getting an A in class for a reasonable anwer to your teacher questioning you spelling Nancy. I had one teacher I would have liked to throw a brick at a time or two....but I didn't:o) One of my favorite memories was getting an A+ on a vase that I made in art. The teacher put it in an art show and it won a blue ribbon.

The show I loved most on TV was The Outlaws, a western series. In fact, when I called the doctor and told him I thought I was in labor with my oldest son, and told him how far apart contractions were, he said get to the hospital pretty soon and I asked him if he though I had time to watch The Outlaws first:o)

Oh my, so long ago. We didn't get a TV until 1959. Always looked for the Ed Sullivan show. There weren't too many choices - but Mr. Rogers Playhouse was often on for the "kids" but I watched it often with them. Also Sherry Lewis and Lambchops. I watched the old Days of Our Lives soap opera because it came on when the kidlets were taking their naps.

When I threw my term paper in the garbage after the teacher (in front of the teacher) told me I hadn't read the works. I didn't even spell the lead characters correct. I told her that was how my mother spelt my brothers name. She must have reconsidered, I got an A in that class.

My older brother, in his sporty little studebaker:o) I took drivers education in school a year or so later actually got to drive his 1957 Black with white top BelAire chevvy with red car seats. Clear plastic overcover and tiny gold stars all over the seats. Can still hear him muttering 'wipe your fingerprints off the door handles when you get out'.

What is one of your favorite school memories?

My favorite "automobile' was my 1995 white Dodge Dakota pickup. I bought it in Albuquerque New Mexico and drove it for 14 years. My grandson has it now. It was my first pickup and took us to some great Trout streams in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. It had 4 wheel drive.

Who taught you to drive?

My very first car 'in my name' was a 1958 forrest green station wagon. It was already 8 years old but worked perfectly for my Avon business and mine and my boys frequent trips to the beach. My very favorite was a 1965 commuter station wagon, pale blue, 3 seater.

I didn't answer the original question because my answer is not a happy story. I knew I wanted a man who had the same interests as I had. I loved singing in a band, I worked hard for my money and was supporting myself at the age of 17 so I was also looking for that quality. I wanted to marry someone who attended church regularly (the way I had all my life). I wanted someone who wanted children and approved of his wife staying home at least until the children were past grade school and then approved of my working to help save toward college educations or trade school of my childrens choices.
My choice was newly mustered out of the Air Force and already had a good job lined up. He SAID he also attended church regularly and his beliefs were the same as mine. He and I both sang with the same band and our circle of friends were mutual. Very shortly after we married I realized he had an addiction to alcohol and was insanely jealous, and possessive. To make a long story short, he was physically and mentally abusive and I chose to file for a divorce after 11 years rather than continue to expose to an existance that my boys might grow up thinking was normal.. I raised my children on my own because his alcoholism did not allow him to keep steady work. He swore that if he ever saw me in public with another man our lives would be in danger so I chose not to date. By the time my boys were married, I had decided that I enjoyed a nice quiet life. I have many friends of both gender and am reasonably comfortable. He passed away after deteriorating for 7 months after a stroke. Yes, I have met other men who offered marriage. No I don't think so:o)

Same question anyone? Did you know what you wanted in a man or women? Did they meet your needs?

I live in my own little world, but I like it here.

I had no idea what I wanted in a woman. I just wanted a date with a girl in my High School classes that I had know for 3 years. Incredibly, she asked me to go to the Sadie Hawkins Dance our Junior year. We got married 6.5 years later and I have never dated anyone else after our first date. We've been dating for 54.5 years and I can't imagine life with anyone else.

The other question. My career was doing what I decided I wanted to do when I was thirteen. I really enjoyed life as a Naval Aviator. The reason we waited 6.5 years to get married was so I could graduate from the Naval Academy. No married guys allowed there.

I would like to see another answer to the original question because I'm weird.

Yes, every test they gave me showed I should go into the accounting. I was sick of them testing me because it always turned up the same. I loved my jobs.

My favorite teacher in High was my band director with the science teacher running a close second. After the 6th grade, I had no great love for any of my math teachers:o) Nor math after the 8th grade.

Did you follow the occupation that you dreamed about when you were still in school?

The last thing I thought I would ever be was a seamstress, least of all in wedding attire. I always wanted to be a dancer and later decided that it was a lot more enjoyable as a pasttime than it would have been a career:o)

Sorry, nope, most of my grade school teachers were a lot younger than my Grandma. I like the trend though.

What subject did your favorite High School Teacher teach.

Mine taught Advanced Algebra and Trig and I campaigned for her years later when she ran for the School Board and I was home on leave.

Ann, you may have to send your pants to a cleaners to see if they can work on the stain. I know my mom used to buy a product named Energine way back when to get out stubborn stains but I have no idea where you would find it anymore. It was a 'cleaning fluid' and they may have stopped selling it to the public due to all the substance abuse going on.

I haven't ever used non run sheets but I do put almost all new washable garments in a vinegar soak before I wash them and it really cuts down on the bleeding problem.

I took both piano lessons, and played clarinet in school band, can strum a little guitar but never excelled at any. I do have an organ and enjoy practicing for myself and of course love my karaoke:o)

I have a very large collections of greeting cards, starting with the little congratulations cards my mom saved in my baby book. Post cards mom and dad sent to us on vacations. Birthday cards down the years, valentines. My sisters and I were always letter writers and I've saved some of those down the years and it's nice when I'm missing my oldest sister to pull out a newsy letter she wrote me 10 or 15 years ago. Never wonder why I am continually sorting and trying to cull out things because I'm sentimental to the max.

Did you have a grade school teacher that you felt almost a granddaughters love for?

I haven't tried those non-run sheets in the washer but do sort clothes fairly closely before tossing anything in .... white, light and dark. -- re stains, Goop works really well on greasy stains. I pour peroxide on blood stains as soon as I know they are there. It fizzes up and the residue washes out fairly easily. Nurses use it all the time.

I played the piano before my hands started hurting. We just recently got rid of our piano - it was rather painful to see it go but also a relief. I was frustrated trying to play.

Do you save all the old greeting cards? I have old ones back to my grandmother sending me cards for my birthday pre-teen years.

Attempted to learn to play the Guitar and do a great job with "He got the whole world in his hand" emoticon or chopstick on the Piano. I love music but when younger we had no money to afford a Instrument. Although I am from a musical family (my Uncle was first Violinist at the Nuernberg Opera) . I love singing and do a decent job with my voice, LOL.
Marie I believe the stain is tomato based, looks like someone spilled some Baked Bean sauce on the back of my pant leg. Tried all you mentioned and still there emoticon

Have you ever tried those new sheets (in the washer) that prevents color run???

Most boring and most necessary...cleaning out the refrigerator.

It's really difficult to get some stains out of clothes. I try to judge by the color the stain is, first . The very best way is to use 'shout' or other fabric stain removers before it goes through the dryer...heat sets a stain pretty good. Ink stains- I have had some good results spraying with hair spray. Might take 2 or 3 tries, scrubbing with a tooth brush each time with a bar soap scrub and rinse inbetween. If it's permanent marker, spray with WD40. Also works for marks on a light colored counter. If after washing, there is any oil residue, rub corn starch or powder over the garment to absorb the oil. Blood....soak immediately with cold water or rub a cube of ice over it several times using a paper towel or tissue to absorb color. Launder in cold water rubbing stain good with a bar of laundry soap. If blood stain persists, daub with peroxide and sprinkle baking soda over the stain to try to bubble it out. Paint- try fingernail polish remover unless it is a fragile fabric. Rust--rub with fresh lemon juice, rub in some salt and lay out in sun to dry.
Most of the time I have pretty good luck just checking garments before I wash and spray with Spray or Wash or Shout, prewash stain removers. I'll swear that stains caused by tomato based sauce is the hardest to remove.

Do you now or have you ever played a musical instrument.

Blowing the dust around emoticon I am not the best housewife but do dust when needed,LOL.
No pets for us either, to much fun traveling and not having to wonder where to board or who to ask to watch. Had Fishes once and while on our trip to China my neighbor killed most of them with (love) over feeding.
Music all except Rap. Especially while exercising I need the beat to make it fun.

any remedy to get (who knows what) stains out of white Jeans??

I don't often listen to music. My preference is quiet time. I rarely turn the radio on when I'm driving. I'm not able to let music be a background for some reason. If it's turned down I try hard to listen to it. When I do turn on music it's usually a light classical or quiet jazz. It seems my brain just feels overwhelmed with noise.

(no pets any more - until the past several years we did more traveling and spent more time away from home. Maybe the day will come when we have a dog - love having one to snuggle around my feet - but it's rather nice to be pet-less and not have to consider care when we need to be away from home.)

Which household chore do you find the most boring but necessary?

I have several boxes of unsorted photos and work on it when I have a few minutes to spare. Putting them in assorted albums.

My last pet was a cat named Schnozie. She died and I decided that since we don't have anyone to care for an inside pet when we travel, it was time to not have a pet. They need daily care.

No, I do not trust politicians. The last batch is more interested in tearing down each others reputations and not building their own integrity by telling you what their true intentions are.......only what they think people want to hear.....and don't we all have different opinions??

Do you often listen to music and what is your favorite kind?

Not in boxes anymore. Joe took on the project years ago. He put our photos in albums and gave each of our four children an album with their photos in it and included for each child some photos of the family group, too. The kids loved it. Now most of our photos are in the computers - - - his and mine.

We had a celebration last year at Joe's family reunion of an aunt and two uncles in their 90's. My side of the family mostly get into their 70's; one aunt made it to 80's. I am already 76, but healthy.

When did you feel you were too old to have pets?
Joe has been ready to be pet-free for several years. I love my little dachshund, but realize it is getting difficult to find a place for little Kiwi when we travel. Perhaps he is my last pet.

My family longevity isn't extremely long - My uncle (dad's youngest brother) will be 83 and I'm not sure any of them lived longer than that. Uncle Bill is bright, articulate, cares for his wife who is somewhat debilitated by a stroke. Gee - that's only 10 years older than me now!

Do you have unsorted photos in boxes (and boxes and boxes)?
