Thanks for starting this cycling challenge. I was quite excited, hoping I would be able to get in 20 out of the 30 days, did better than that with 28 out of 30. But better than that was being able to get out with my wife a couple of times, with our daughter a couple of times. Biking became a great way to exercise which didn't bother my back. Along with being great exercise, biking became a means of running many errands. Not only benefiting my health, but not burning any gas. Along with getting great news about my cholesterol levels this week, when I weighed myself this morning I have now lost over 50 pounds since we started on our journey to a healthier lifestyle 9 1/2 months ago.

Congratulations to all of you who stuck with it in June.

Today is the end of our June Cycling Challenge. emoticon I think we all had a lot of fun along with our exercise. For many it was the first time on a bike in many years.

We will be doing it again in the fall after the heat of the summer is gone. emoticon

Still going on this cycle challenge. Last night I realized how much I am starting to like cycling. I went out on the bike and felt the cool breeze in a way that I couldn't find it when walking.
I felt such freedom flying down a hill after I pedaled so hard to get up that hill.
This was a great challenge even though I was leery of biking everyday at first.

Took the day off from cycling yesterday. Don't think I hurt anything, but was quite sore. Back at it today with 45 minutes on the exercise bike. Felt good.

June 10, Just 10 days since the bicycle challenge started......

In 10 minutes I can now go 2km on my bike. I would not have believed that to be possible just one short week ago.

My legs are not quite as sore either and I'm not huffing and puffing as bad as I did on June 1.

I have found another gear on my bike - I named it "this is getting a little easier." emoticon

Hope everyone is enjoying this challenge.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

I have managed to get in a ride everyday this week. Hopefully my wife and I will get out again this weekend. For those who want to join the challenge, go to Spark Teams, click on the Healthy Hearts team and at the bottom of the team page the challenges are listed and you can click on the Join Challenge. You record a 1 for each day that you got in some bike exercise, either on an indoor exercise bike, or riding outside.

Hello,

I am new to the group. I'm not new to spark but I am restarting to work towards my goal of eating healthy and exercising. I am late in joining this challenge but would like to join in as soon as my bike is assembled. I should be able to start sometime this week. This challenge is perfect for me since I am new to biking. As a child, I lived on my bike and loved riding. I had a bike when my children were As an adult, whenever we would go on vacation and could rent bikes, we would but now I would like to ride on a daily basis. I figure I'll start riding around the neighborhood and then work my way out to the store and library. Recently, I discovered that there is a bike path that is not too far away from where I live. My goal is to ride that bike path and then from there, who knows?

My husband is thin and active and willing to get a bike too so that he can bike with me. First, I want to do this challenge to get comfortable riding again.

Thank you for this challenge. :)

I was actually able to get in 2 rides today, first was my 'eco-ride' riding to the library and then the farmers market, the second was a ride on the bike trail with my wife, the first time that we have been on a bike ride together for many year. Great day!

I did it. I started this challenge. I will try to ride my bike for 10 minutes each day in June. I was really working hard for those 10 minutes so I think it was a good cardio 10 minutes.
Thanks for thinking of this challenge. I seem to stick to a challenge that is for a limited time like 28 or 30 days or whatever.
I'm looking forward to improving my performance on the bike over the next 30 days.
Now if I can just figure out all these gears. My granddaughter says there are 18 speeds on my bike. I figured out 3 of them, = hard, harder and impossible. : )

Hope everyone else doing this challenge is having fun too. : )))

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

I was able to add this challenge as a team goal in order for us to track.
Since we will all be setting our own goals I set it up only for tracking days.
So when you have finished your cycling plan for the day all you need to do check off the day.

Here is how it works:

Go down on our team page to "Team Goals" and you will see the line for Cycling Challenge.

To your right, click on "Track Goal" You should see under Healthy Hearts Goals the challenge listed along with the days of the week.

Each day when you complete your cycling challenge, just click on that day and enter 1 for that day.

On the team page again, click on the left "Cycling Challenge" this will bring you to the leaderboards. Everytime you check off a day, it will change your total here.

This is the first time I have set one up, I hope it goes ok. If you have any problems please let me know

Thanks

Marion

For those of you who already use a bike, you can challenge yourself to increase your distance, increase your minutes or add another day.

Or maybe start riding uphill more. emoticon

Add more fun and challenge by getting a small group of family and friends and ride together

Great challenge!! I just got a new seat for my 2 year old and a basket for the front of my bike to carry groceries and such, so perfect timing!! I will be sure to check in often. I recently sprained my ankle so my physio said biking and swimming are okay, but didn't want me running or doing yoga, so this is a great focus for me this month. :) Good luck everyone.

Cyclists are a diverse group. Some of us ride fat tires down rocky trails, some of us ride road bikes up burly hills, some of us ride for sport and some of us ride just for fun. Some ride for the adrenaline rush and some ride their bikes for basic transportation. But all of us can take advantage of the healthy benefits of cycling, even if we never ever buy a single item made from spandex.

Bicycling, along with being the most efficient mode of human locomotion, is also one of the best all-around activities for improving our health. From head to toes, cycling’s health benefits are hard to beat.

7 Health Benefits of Cycling
1. Cycling is good for your heart: Cycling is associated with improved cardiovascular fitness, as well as a decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease.

2. Cycling is good for your muscles: Riding a bike is great for toning and building your muscles, especially in the lower half of the body – your calves, your thighs, and your rear end. It’s also a great low-impact mode of exercise for those with joint conditions or injuries to the legs or hips, which might keep them from being active.

3. Cycling is good for your waistline: You can burn a lot of calories while biking, especially when you cycle faster than a leisurely pace, and cycling has been associated with helping to keep weight gain down. And cycling has the added benefit of ramping up your metabolism, even after the ride is over.

4. Cycling is good for your lifespan: Bicycling is a great way to increase your longevity, as cycling regularly has been associated with increased ‘life-years’, even when adjusted for risks of injury through cycling.

5. Cycling is good for your coordination: Moving both feet around in circles while steering with both your hands and your body’s own weight is good practice for your coordination skills.

6. Cycling is good for your mental health: Riding a bike has been linked to improved mental health.

7. Cycling is good for your immune system: Cycling can strengthen your immune system, and could protect against certain kinds of cancers.

A little summer fun challenge beginning June 1st. Whether it's riding "outside" on your bike or "inside" on your stationary. emoticon

The link below will bring you to a sample cycling plan by Livestrong. As you can tell this plan goes beyond 30 days.

However, our challenge for June is to see how many minutes and / or days we can increase our riding exercise in a 30 day period and hopefully, at the end of 30 days , we will have developed a new exercise program that can take us up to the beginning of winter.

You choose your own style and set your own goal.
