Why Healthy Food Makes You Slim

People who eat healthy, mostly unprocessed foods, including fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (lentils, dry beans and peas), and limited amounts of lean animal protein (reduced-fat dairy, fish, chicken, and lean cuts of other meats), often find that they can eat as much as they want without gaining weight. If they are switching from a diet containing lots of processed foods, they find that they can eat more yet consume fewer calories -- and they lose weight.

Because natural fruits, vegetables and whole grains are high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, they are absorbed slowly and satisfy our feelings of hunger. Heavily processed foods, on the other hand, are not only low in nutritional value, but they don't make us feel satisfied so we eat more of them. They are made from refined ingredients that are so tasteless they require large amounts of salt, sugar, fat, and high-priced advertising to make them attractive.

Perhaps our biggest nutritional mistake has been turning away from foods in their natural state. We have replaced them with processed foods that have been modified to last longer, be easier to manufacture and distribute, and be more convenient to store and use.

Take apple juice as an example. Even the simple act of removing the pulp to make apple juice detracts from its value for both health and weight loss. A medium size apple contains just 72 calories, and over 3 grams of fiber, while 8 fl oz of apple juice contains 120 calories and no fiber at all. And we're just talking about pure, "healthy" apple juice.
Natural foods are nutritious and contain much of what is good for us, including vitamins and minerals, fiber, the cancer-fighting antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, and the sustained energy provided by whole grains and complex carbohydrates. They reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Because of their nutrient and fiber content, natural foods are healthy for us and help keep us slim.


Heavily processed foods are substantially less nutritious and contain much of what is not good for us, including sodium, preservatives, sugars, saturated fats and trans fats. The most nutritious part of whole grains is the outer cover, the part that is removed to make white flour and white rice.

Because of their lack of nutrient and fiber content, and all their additives, heavily processed foods can be unhealthy for us and help us gain weight.

Eat healthy, natural foods with a high ratio of nutrients to calories and you will not be fat and you will not go hungry. You will be healthier, too.

Learning to eat well and exercise is the only solution to long-term weight loss.

I am back in the game and I am very happy to say that I have lost three pounds and my week is not over. I am getting back in line with my weight lost I had before my "vacation." If it doesn't show on my ticker, that is ok. I know that I am back and it feels REALLY GOOD!

A healthy weight loss is typically no more than 2lbs.
There are 52 wEEks in a year , so losing only 1lb a week = 52lb.

Changing eating habits alone can help with this challenge.
Exercising 2 or 3 times a week will make it that much easier.
Doing both will most likely help you surpass the challenge.
If your are in post your results each week and what you did to get those results. Good luck!

Problem: mindless snack in the evening.
1. I didn't pace myself in the garden in the morning and didn't get enough rest in the afternoon = tired and wanted emotional comfort in the evening.
2. Poor choice - I watched mindless TV which triggers mindless snacking.
Solution: Awareness and put more thought in the choices I make.

Happiness is remembering what I really want.
Laughter is the best medicine. The best things in life are free.

Learn to say 'no' to the good so you can say 'yes' to the best.

I started tracking my meals over the weekend and lost 1/2 pound!! If it works why can't I be consistent with it?? My true test will be at work this week. Taco Tuesday is tomorrow and on Wednesday one of the owners is taking us all to lunch at Longhorn's Steakhouse. Appetizers are ordered before we get there and they spare no expense.,,,they are a meal in themselves. Thank the Lord there is salad on the menu!! emoticon

It's not my day to weigh in, but I just made the BEST spinach dip today.

It's just under 37 calories for a QUARTER CUP serving! emoticon

I add about 1/4 cup of parmesan for flavor, but the recipe makes 8 servings so it only adds about 8 calories a serving.

I posted it on SparkRecipes under Low-Fat, Low-Cal Spinach Dip. Makes the perfect amount to share at a party!!!

By the way, under secrets of success I posted how to get your most accurate weight, I learned in the hospital after my surgery when they were keeping track everyday. Basically, morning, post-bathroom, pre-food or drink. Also if you have a digital scale, try to look straight ahead while the scale weighs you instead of down at the numbers. Hope this helps!

I feel my body muscles changing despite what my scale is saying. I am now wearing size sixteen straight leg work pants which is not my favorite because the are too revealing. Now they are now getting roomy on me and I could not wear these pants a few months ago. That is saying much more to me than my scale is. When my scale catches up to my body muscles changing, it is going to be amazing... I believe!

Lost another lb this week. Went to doc this morning. He did a EKG and said it looked good.He did schedule me for a stress test for thursday. Wants to check me out and rule out any problems. BP was up some, but its back to normal.
