I grew up having wine with dinner. My family used to make an annual trip through the Napa Sonoma Mendocino wine country to stock up on wines for the year. So, pairing wines with our holiday meals is something I enjoy doing.
I have certain "failsafe" favorites, like Domaine Ste. Michelle Cuvee Brut (makes a great cranberry cocktail), Cat's Phee on a Gooseberry Bush (Sauvignon Blanc, Australia), Beringer White Zinfandel and Rothschild Bordeaux Blanc. A nice sparkling white wine doesn't have to cost a fortune and can be paired with everything from appetizers through dessert, depending upon how dry or sweet the wine.
Other good wine pairings suitable for your holiday dinners:
Green salads - sparkling white, champagne
Veggie entrees - Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc
Seafood, shellfish - Pinot Noir, Syrah
Turkey, savory dishes, potatoes - sparkling white, Spanish Cava
Pies - sparkling red, Australian Shiraz
Light desserts - Muscat/Moscato
Fruit & Cheese - Port, Riesling, sparkling/champagne
bon appetit!
