Food & Wine's 7 Rules for Perfect Pairing:

1) A dry rose with hors d'oeuvres (I also like Beringer White Zinfandel)

2) Unoaked white wine with anything you can squeeze lemon or lime on - e.g. Sauvignon Blanc

3) Low-alcohol wines with spicy foods - e.g. Riesling (my personal choice with Asian foods)

4) Tannic (full-bodied) reds with red meat or rich game (duck, venison, etc.), grilled meats, lamb, turkey - e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Shiraz

5) Pair the wine with the sauce for lighter meats - e.g. white wine with white/white wine sauce, zesty or bold reds with rich dark sauces (my personal favorite is a Rothschild Bordeaux Blanc as it goes with just about anything)

6) Earthy wines with earthy foods - e.g. Pinot Noir with lamb or wild mushroom soup, Merlot

7) Light wines with dessert - e.g. Muscat/Moscato, Asti Spumante, Madeira, Grenache

Hope this helps!

I don't know much about wine, but am sure willing to learn.

I like cabernet myself. But I don't know what it goes with.

Any ideas?

I especially enjoy Pinot Noir with Thanksgiving Dinner. Can be pricey, but well worth it!

I grew up having wine with dinner. My family used to make an annual trip through the Napa Sonoma Mendocino wine country to stock up on wines for the year. So, pairing wines with our holiday meals is something I enjoy doing.

I have certain "failsafe" favorites, like Domaine Ste. Michelle Cuvee Brut (makes a great cranberry cocktail), Cat's Phee on a Gooseberry Bush (Sauvignon Blanc, Australia), Beringer White Zinfandel and Rothschild Bordeaux Blanc. A nice sparkling white wine doesn't have to cost a fortune and can be paired with everything from appetizers through dessert, depending upon how dry or sweet the wine.

Other good wine pairings suitable for your holiday dinners:

Green salads - sparkling white, champagne

Veggie entrees - Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc

Seafood, shellfish - Pinot Noir, Syrah

Turkey, savory dishes, potatoes - sparkling white, Spanish Cava

Pies - sparkling red, Australian Shiraz

Light desserts - Muscat/Moscato

Fruit & Cheese - Port, Riesling, sparkling/champagne

bon appetit!
