I go to Trader Joe's more than Whole Foods because it is cheaper. But Whole Foods is closer so with the price of gas I may need to re-think that! I treat myself to Whole Foods vegies and fruits in the winter when it is hard to find high quality in the regular grocery store but during spring and summer, I do farmers markets. One of my favorite Whole Foods items is a pear vinegar called Cuisine Perel - it makes an amazing salad dressing with just a little good olive oil and black pepper - especially good on arugula. Trader Joe's - frozen waffles, frozen fruit, salmon burgers, great selection of nuts and dried fruit, soup and broth in boxes...one of my favorite items is mini wheat pita breads. Makes a sandwich last much longer to use 2-3 of them rather than regular bread.

We do not have a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in our area. We have a Store called Native Sun which is very good. It is quite a way from our house 21 miles one way, so we have to combine a stop there with other errands. We find that Publix in our area is carrying much more of the healthy foods. We also purchase 95% of our veggies from a local farmer's market that has a lot of chemical free veggies and fruits. As the owner is also very much into eating healthy, he keeps me advised of what he will be having and when.

Keep on track

Trader Joe's is definitely less expensive than Whole Foods, which has the nickname "Whole Paycheck". :-) At Tr Joes I like the brown rice in the freezer section, black bean & corn enchiladas, the whole grain with flaxseed pasta, 0% fat greek yogurt, spicy hummus, baby baguettes, and Trek Mix. You'll see when you get there - there's lots to choose from. Just watch out for the candy/cookie items because they're delicious and waaay to easy to put in the basket. Altho I do allow myself the 72% dark chocolate bars, 'cause that's healthy in small amounts. Good luck!

I don't shop much at Whole Foods because it is so expensive and I can get the same things at the regular stores in town for much less. EXCEPT: fresh spelt bread and the salad bar.

At the salad bar I get just the salad toppings: shaved carrots, edemame, etc. Enough for about 4 salads. At home I can just cut up some of my own romaine and grab a handful of the veggies to throw on top.

It is a bit more expensive than buying and cutting up my own veggies, but the convenience is worth it to me.

I just checked and there is a Trader Joe's not too far away from where I will be living. I've never been in one, so I am anxious to try it. I looked on their website and it looks like they have a fair number of quick meals. That would be really helpful. If you have any other specific favorites besides those mentioned below, please pass them along.

Same goes with Whole Foods....anything specific that you have found to be good and not too high in calories, the suggestions would be appreciated.

Do they both have nutrition information on all of their items, even the salads in the Deli section?

The problem with Whole Foods is there is so much delicious looking food! The organic produce is always a good choice, as are some of the prepackaged or deli salads. I am a label reader tho, even in Tr Joes and Whole Foods - I always look at the fat content and calorie count, even with organic/whole grain/healthy items. I like Whole Foods for the produce, whole grain breads, pizza by the slice, and low-fat salad dressings. Enjoy!

If you have a Trader Joe's, you have a lot of convenient healthy options, like frozen brown rice, frozen oatmeal, great canned and packaged products including soups and spicy beans in order to add some fiber to your diet. Maybe Whole Foods has similar products.

Hi All--I will be moving soon back to a town with a Whole Foods store in the neighborhood. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what to buy that tastes good, is healthy and will not add a lot of calories to my day.
