Since neither my knees nor my back are supporting a running regimen any longer, I've finally gotten into some sort of a speed walking routine, some thanks to challenging myself to race walking a local 5K (the only race-walker)
My legs were in pretty good shape despite my still recovering with a bout of bronchitis, I finished the 5K with a decent (tho' not a PR) racewalking time of 30:26

I noticed that the winning running time for my age group was a time that, were my knees still cooperative, I could have beaten for a podium position. Granted this is a somewhat local venue with less than 500 total participants, but still. emoticon

5K this morning, 4/29/2012, 20:54 gun time. No chip time for the 5K; would have had chip time if I'd been in the associated half marathon.

Not as fast as the 5K split from the 10K I ran last November, but a good result for where I am right now in recovery from a foot injury.

still not back in full form, haven't done more than one speed walk in the same week since mid-November and have only been out 7 times this FALL. Back spasms still providing a distraction and challenge to walking at full speed.
Did get out today, tho' it was a bit chilly, took an Advil and a Tylenol before stretching and was able to put up a good time for a 4 mile walk.

looks like I'm doing about 2.78K on my current 'Easy to 5K' plan. Hopefully will be doing 5K each time by my 51st birthday on Jan. 7. Which would be good, because I've signed up for my first 5K race.

New to SP and just came on this challenge. Started my new way of life along with my fiance' just a month ago and part of our regimen is run/walk and bicycling. We did a 5K yesterday in 44 minutes so I'll use that as my starting point.

HEALTHIERKEN, taking 3 minutes off of your 5K time is great. Getting your heart rate lower is great too. You do burn fewer calories, but you know your health is better. Keep up the good work.

Did it in 47 minutes today, average heart rate down significantly. Mixed blessings--means I'm regaining overall fitness, but it also means I burn fewer calories covering the same distance . . . .

I use this one:

I monitor my heartrate at various points in the walk and use those numbers to establish the average heartrate needed for the calculation.
Hope this helps you.

What calorie burning calculator are you using?
because when I put in 3.1 miles in 50 min (~16min pace), {using the SP calculator),
it only shows me burning
342 calories and I weigh just under 200lbs.

[and I've seen other generic calculators that presume a 150lbs say that each mile is only worth about 100 calories.}

OK. I'm back at it at least for my 28 SparkStart Days(well, for me it's re-Start!). I walked 5 k with poles today to set a baseline. Did it in 50 minutes. According to the Calories Burned Calculator I burned about 450 calories. Feeling good about that.

I consider myself fortunate to still be running. I had to take a month or two off in the fall when I thought I'd have to get knee surgery. I had been running about five miles a day at a decent pace when I felt "warning chimes" in my knee. Ultimately the Orthopod said it was just Arthritis and told me to switch to a lower impact form of exercise. I cut back on my distance and now take fish oil, Glucosamine Chondroitin and Alleve in the mornings. It seems to be working; I haven't had any more "warning chimes" in the knee.
I am doing 3.38 miles most mornings before work. My neighborhood is pretty hilly. It is always tough getting up the first hill when I go around the corner.
I've noticed my times increase as the summer progresses. I used to finish my run in 27-28 minutes. Lately, it has taken me up to 30-32 minutes for the same course.
I guess we will see if anything changes when the temperatures cool off a bit.

Thanks [RUN4FOOD],
The re-injury last year was devastating to my routine, so I did end up gaining several lbs back because I hated the thought of taking OTC drugs, just to go walking.
However, after gaining back 20+lbs, knew I had to break a compromise, so earlier this year, I started experimenting with how little a dose I could take and still get the kind of edge off the pain to walk as fast as I like. {as I had done in 2007}
I had reached 212lbs by January, and had a hard time breaking below 200 in May, which was confusing because I was tracking my calories and exercise and was easily achieving a 4,000 calorie deficit each week for several weeks. After my stay-cation in May/June, I started taking more water to work with me, increasing my daily water at work from 60 oz to 80 oz.
In two weeks, I dropped to 198# and feel I can continue to lose now that I am putting down 110 to 130 oz of water each day.
Still at a loss as to what to do return my back to some level of consistent strength, ...
looking for more effective and still 'safe' core exercise to strengthen the connector muscles and will soon be looking into some Pilates moves at the suggestion of another SP 50+ buddy.

IT would be nice if this forum had a thumbs-up option here too.
Lots of good remarks, I'd like to quickly agree with by just giving them a thumbs up

I'm a bit past walking 5K, though I do have a course in my neighborhood that is roughly equal to that.
I am fortunate enough to live in a planned community that has sidewalks everywhere and a community lake in the middle with its own asphalt walking path (1.25mile loop)
I had been just doing the one loop around the lake in the middle of my walk that made for a 4miler, but with the improved weather and a bit improved performance I have recently been doing 3 laps around the lake, pushing my distance beyond a 10K to 6.5 miles.
I'm having to work myself back down to my record times of a few years back since my re-injury in June of 2010, that now requires a prep-dose of Advil or Tylenol or a half combo of each (before I stretch) to get past the 45-50 min threshold before my back starts to spasm.

My PR for 6.5 miles can be found on my page (if you become a sparkfriend)
my best time since the injury, was a week or so ago when I walked it in 1:11:24 [a 10:59/mile pace]
I did do a 5K walk for a SP challenge back in mid-April, ... my time was 31:17

so, my good intentions to do 5km several times a week went all to h*** in no time at all. I think I walked three days in succession and then got all off the sched. I did manage to do 2.5km walking from my car appointment to my blood donor appointment day before yesterday, and with some luck I'll get in a full 5 km. Sunday and Monday and daily thereafter for a while. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Finished my 5k my way program this morning, ran it in 34 min. flat... Kind of disappointed in the time though, cuz I've run it faster during the training phase... Got my very first 5k race coming up May 21, so I'll keep running (jogging) probably longer training runs of 40 minutes or more until then...

I'm in now! 5k with poles today. 46 min. Brief stops to try to get a HR reading. Waste of time. Gonna start taking a carotid pulse for just 15 sec. instead standing still for a minute while my wrist monitor catches a pulse. By the time it measures, my rate has gone down 5 or 10 beats!!!! Need more exercise minutes tomorrow to reach my weekly goal. gonna go 7.5k so my time won't really be part of the tracking. Sure will burn extra calories, though!

I did my first 5k yesterday in 37 minutes 41 seconds. I started off walking because of a flare-up of gout in my foot but changed to run/walk about a mile and still beat my practice time by over 5 minutes.

Unbeknownst to myself, until just now...I did 5K this am on my treadmill. I walked at 4 to 4.6 mph at varying inclines of 2-6%.Including a 5 min warm-up and 2-3 min cooldown my time was 45 minutes.

Another 5k walk is looming on the horizon. This one is in Seabrook Tx. I plan to be there right after the Tai Chi class. I'll post the time after the event.

I am going to mark this off and will get back to you on my time. Thanks for the challenge. I am happy to see that a good number of us are interested in doing it.

I have been thinking about a 5K run now that I am seeing some results, was not quite sure what that meant, so I checked out the mileage equivalent and it about 3.1 miles.

Now I have a target to shoot for. So now it is not a matter of 'if' rather a when. Excited about the prospect.

Hope you feel as rewarded as I have doing this challenge, Patrick. Because we have a hectic two or three weeks ahead of us, with much time away from home, I'm going to sign off this challenge till closer to fall. Thanks for putting the challenge forward--it came exactly when I needed something to get me started and keep me going for a month straight.

I informally did a 5K today -- I say informally b/c I had planned on walking that far and was not keeping a real close watch on the time. Anyway, it was somewhere around 53 minutes, so I'll use that as my current baseline. Hope to get out later this week and see how I perform with a watch on.

I would join officially as I run a pile of km every week, and am already in a challenge for this year 3000 km for 2010

My first log entry was for 02-Aug-09 it was 2.5 km I did it in in 20 mins. I think I started running in late Jun 09.

I was able to do two 2.5 at 20 min each. These were not recorded with a stop watch, so they a probably ballparked

Mid aug I got a heart rate monitor and stop watch. So by the end of Aug 09 I averaged about 40 min on a 5 km

my best 5km to day is just under 25 min.

While this is not blistering fast, I am pleased with my progress. This coming from a guy who weighed 244 pounds in May 09 and did no real exercise. I have managed to loose 1/3 of me, lower my blood pressure to normal, lower my resting heart rate from 85 to 67 bpm. and regularly run 10 an average of 10km per day six days a week.

So while I will not officially join this challenge, I encourage you guys to go for it, and see what you can do. (I am already committed to two Challenges, One on a running site, and the other is a virtual run/walk across Canada here at SP.

I have managed to shave 15 min of my 5Km in less than a year.

I am also running in a 10k race at the Ottawa Marathon with my 13 year old grandson as my running buddy. We could not convince his dad to join us (wanted to have 3 generations of McCaffrey's in the event, but maybe he will for some other race.)

Good luck with this challenge guys.

I just noticed that this appears to be an old threat. I did not check the dates on the other posts. Oh well, perhaps I will bump it up, and get it back to life?

Scott,

If you have a good course laid out that is 2.5 miles, then I would stick with that and just track your progress. That is really the point of this challenge -- record and see if you can improve your time.

Thanks!

I came up with a fun challenge -- I'm calling it the 5K challenge. Here is how it works:

- Walk or run 5K
- Record your initial time here, along with if you ran or walked it
- Record your subsequent 5K's and see if you can improve on your time.
- No deadline -- we'll just do it until interest wanes.

I just came up with this one while at the gym today. Had not intended to do it, but since I forgot my iPod, I was bored, and decided to do something to spice up my workout.

So I'll post my initial entry shortly. It'll be fun to see how everyone does. I know it was a heck of a workout for me!
