Well, I'm done week three and confirmed that "swaps" that include sugar or fake sugar in any form just serve to trigger me. My go to for the commute home is fruit with cheese (the fat in the cheese cuts down my reaction to the sugar in the fruit). I may have found some herbal teas yesterday that will also work... still have to try it.

I hope everyone else is doing well with week three and swaps. I'm amazed at how creative people are -- we will all find a way to get around this sugar beast!

Starting week 3 today (Friday), and very happy so far with the results. I've found that on the way home, fruit and cheese saves the day (and avoids the drive-through fast food!) I'm also trying to find a satisfying berry and citrus herbal tea. I had two gifted to me a while back that I mixed and really cut the sweet cravings, but it costs a fortune so I'm looking for the same thing, but cheaper...

Had No sugar added fudge pop. Pretty good. Satisfied my choc. craving and only 40 cal, 2grams of fat. I freeze my berries too and thaw just a bit, and put in my smoothies, keeps it cool and refreshing longer. Can put frozen fruits in water too.

Was reading some of your ideas here. There are some good ones.
I have been substituting plain yogurt and fresh fruit as well. I also have made some yogurt pops for hot days. Eating a lot more fruit these days, taking advantage of the seasonal fruits.
Thanks for all the reminders of what one can do to swap out the sugar!

So far, the best thing for me is to ban chocolate from the house. I can handle sweets in moderation as long as it isn't chocolate. Chocolate is definitely a trigger food. If I find myself craving chocolate after 30 minutes and a glass of water, then I have a small bowl of chocolate ice cream. The ice cream is in the downstairs freezer and requires a special trip to go get and then again to put away. So, I have to really want it before I will go get it.

I don't do the artificial sweetener thing, so I'm trying to make other swaps, like fruit when I want something sweet. I've also found that a cup of decaf chai tea with just a tiny bit of half and half is very satisfying and all the spices in it make it taste kind of sweet.

I just came back to this challenge. I have taken a year to really "take it to heart" about ridding myself of the sugar monster. I think I'm really convinced I, ME, MYSELF has to do this for ME....no-body else is going to do it for me.
So, I thank all of your for the great ideas on how to go about putting this into real life. I have pretty much done the journaling for a year. I know just how many foods I need to quit eating.
I am off to make a batch of the sugar free jello right now......:)

just starting my 3rd week of the challenge, very happy with the progress I've made in cutting down on sugary treats. I've been eating more fruit, loving the green grapes and bought 2 ataulfo mangoes to have when a sugar craving hits, they are creamy and delicious. I also have Elevate Me protein bars. Definitely 'a work in progress', but aim to keep prioritizing healthy eating and planning every day for success.

Wanted something sweet last night and decided to use some sugar free, fat free pudding mix. Used almond milk to make it and found out it didn't get thick. Ate it like soup!

I think overall my best sugar swap has been with my coffee in them morning, I used to put 8 packets of raw sugar in my coffee, now I use just one tsp and 1 packet of stevia. I really believe that all the weight I have lost is from cutting out sugar, there are so many calories in it!

To help my sugar cravings, I have been eating plain yogurt and adding fruit. Also eating low sugar or sugar free items. Reading the lables to make sure no surprises with added ingredients that I don't want. When I want something other than what I mention, I simply try to do something to take my mind off my craving.

I hope all of you are able to find what works to combat your triggers and get past the cravings. I am a sugar junky and I know how hard this is, I have been struggling for years with binging and then hating myself for it. this is not my first attempt to cut out or cut back on sugar, I have tried many times in the past and failed. dont give up, even when you slip up, it really does get easier.

So far I have found this challenge to be easy for me. part of it I believe is due to me wanting to lose weight more than I want a cookie. I still want sugary food and I am still having cravings but logging my food and keeping track of every bite has been really eye opening for me. I find that if I know how many calories I can eat every day and still lose weight I am able to have anything I want but since I am starving I have been choosing foods that are lower in calories than sugar treats. cereal is "desert" because it is like having a treat without having a lot of sugar and I have been using chocolate protein shakes for my sugar fix, I have one that is by Nature's Bounty and has a ton of vitimins with very little sugar I think about 2 grams per serving. I mix that in the blender with some unsweetened almond milk and ice for a "milk Shake" so far it is good for a chocolate fix and has less than 200 calories per serving. of all the shakes I have tried it has the best flavor. I also have switched my yogurt to one that is stevia sweetened, and use stevia and 1 teaspoon of real sugar in my coffee. some other things I have done is drink stevia sweetened hot tea, there are a couple varities that have cocoa mint or carmel flavor and are really good. I also love ice tea. The only drink I have with calories in it is my coffee and that is only because I dont like it black. It's amazing how much celery and peanut butter is like eating desert right now LOL.

I no longer buy or keep junk food around: no cookies, pies, cakes, chips, pretzels etc.

I still crave sweet, but traded off for healthy sweets: no more than 2 of these in any 1 day (often I only eat 1 and skip the second:

1 tablespoon taken in 3 -1 teaspoon increments (lick slowly off the teaspoon to last longer!):

1 TBS Local raw honey (great for the immune system)
1 TBS unsulphered blackstrap molasses (high in calcium & iron, both I'm usually needing more of)
1-3 squares (3 sq=1/4) of a 1.55 oz. Hershey bar, again eaten tiny nibble by tiny nibble allowing each to slowly melt on tongue before next nibble. (Chocolate is high in antioxidants)

With the exception of the chocolate and an occasionally TV dinner, I rarely eat any pre-packaged foods, canned, frozen or otherwise.........

God help me to love others as you love me.

I m diabetic so I try to eat fresh fruit and veggies but I do use artificial sweeteners when I want to bake a pie or make baked beans. I have also bought sugar free jello, cookies, and puddings. The Atkins bars are also a help to me when I want something that tastes like a candy bar. They still have lots of calories but I count them in my tracker anyway.

There are no sensible sugar swaps fir me, the sweet taste, even if it's artificial makes me want sugar. It's best for me to avoid it altogether.

I have found that sugar substitutes are often just as addictive as sugar. The brain is conditioned to expect the sweet taste and this can even result in an insulin response. The problem is made even worse because then there is no sugar in the blood to process, leading to low blood sugar and more cravings.

Along with sugar free jello, the one sweet treat that is almost calorie free is Miss Meringue Fat Free Meringue Minis Cookies. 13 cookies are 110 calories. 5 is more than enough for me so for just 40 calories (about 8/cookie) my sweet tooth is satisfied.

I have reduced my sugar intake further by reducing fruit further. I just don't feel the need for it. Maybe in the summer when there is more ripe local fruit I'll feel like having more, probaby mostly fresh berries and some tart apples in the fall.

I have in my fridge fruits and veggies. In my cupboard I have sugar free jellos, puddings, and sugar free candy. As the days go on, I am preferring fruits or sugar free jello over the candy I used to want all the time. I have much healthier foods in the house now. I thought I would want the sugar free candy all the time, but I find I don't. I am ending 3 weeks in this challenge, and it has been amazing for me. I have lost weight, and I am eating so much healthier now.

I do good bringing snacks to work - fruit, nuts, plain popcorn, etc., but nuts have so much fat in them that it makes it hard to stick to my numbers in that area...any suggestions.

Sounding good, Marsha :)

I substituted sweet food with sultanas, dried pineapple and raw almonds this week. It was a nice, sweet and crunchy snack for the mid afternoon munchies i get.

right now I'm probably eating too much fruit. part of it is this challenge and part of it is that we have lots of fruit in our house. We got a gift of honeybell citrus and then four bags (tangerines, grapefruits, oranges, blood oranges) and we already had cherries, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, and grapes in the house. I am sticking to my calorie, carbs and fiber goals, so not doing too bad. I plan to limit to 2-4 servings of fruit soon. Today I had 8 servings. Swapping fruit for sweet foods (sugar free pudding and sugar free ice cream and diet syrup were biggies) isn't hard for me. Giving up the packets and drinking my coffee, tea, herbal tea, and decaf coffee without sweetener is tough!!

Five and a half days with no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no dried fruit, and no juice. Didn't think I could do it, but I am.

I have been using Dates as they are so naturally sweet I only need 1 to calm my sweet tooth.
I love all the ideas others have posted.
I do a big salad for lunch so I try to do something different for snack but maybe more veggies would be better.

I'm pushing more non-starchy veggies than fruit

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.
