I found sugar free dried fruits ( i.e. cranberries and apricots ) at the Bulk Barn here in Canada. Not sure what the American version would be. Most bulk providers have sugar reduced or sugar free dried fruits. You might try asking the owner or manager of the store if they are available for him to order. It's worth a try. emoticon

I, too, wish I could find no sugar added dried fruit. I've never seen such a thing. I have been snacking on pecans that my mom has shelled :) I mix them with my sugar free jello, thats yummy... pecans have so many calories but I love them and they are way healthier than other snacks I've had. Yesterday my boys picked the rest of the oranges off my tree, so those will be good snacking for a while. Last week I was also snacking on some Murray brand sugar free cookies. 1 serving of 4 is 150 calories so I was having 2 twice a day, those cookies are gone, I still have had no chips or no candy... I think I may be able to do this. I just have to wait for pay so I can buy more healthy stuff.

It's an attitude thing. Attitude is everything.

I have really noticed how sugar affects my calorie intake. Maybe I should have noticed it before this but I didn't I think due to wanting the sugar so much. I did great the first two weeks but then this last week I bought pecan tarts and a roll of sugar cookies. My daughter helped me with the pecan tarts but I have been eating the cookies slowly over this week. I will be glad when they are gone. I could throw them away but I can't seem to do that. I am definitely more in tune to my calorie intake and protein and sodium and calcium and stuff so it has been a good thing for me. I really want to keep to those numbers and I don't think I have ever really cared about that before.

Through these weeks I have definitely cut back. What really makes the best sense to me is to keep it at moderation. I'm not going to be sugar free, I will have desserts but seldom and my replacement is fruit and sugarfree gum...that's what helps me. I have not been having the cravings as bad as I use to so I am accomplishing something on this challenge.

I broke down and ate two cookies yesterday. I hadn't touched a cookie in weeks but was far too tempted when using them to make a cake for my boyfriend. Oh well. I'm not beating myself up about it but I am bummed that I broke my streak and have to start a new one.

Hang in there TIEGRRLIL, I know you pain and I don't know the solution. What has been working for me is all mental, the first day I went in with a positive attitude and finished within my calorie range, day two was hard but I had momentum. Think of something, a streak you want to build on see if that helps.

Are the oranges and the peanut butter all you've eaten, or just the sweet stuff? I, presonally, think it's important to never be hungry when trying to lose weight or eat less of something. I make the worse choices when I'm hungry, so I fill up on healthy stuff before I even get hungry. It works for me.

I hope you can get past this craving. Sorry I don't have any real help...

Where on earth can I find no-sugar-added dried fruit? The big grocery stores don't sell it. My local health food markets don't have it (they did have papaya but nothign else with no added sugar). I even checked Amazon.com, which sells everything, and could not find no-sugar-added dried cranberries. Can anybody help?

I'm doing okay. I had a three pound weight drop towards the end of week two but this morning, week three day two, I was back up one and a half of those pounds. I did have a hot dog last night, which was high in sodium, so maybe that accounts for it. I'm eight days within my calorie range.

I had more sweets that I want to want yesterday. A artificial sweetened pudding cup, a butterscotch dilly bar from DQ and three pieces of toast with cinnamon sugar on them. I did go to the market and pick up some grapes which I will swap for my sugary applesauce today and for the rest of the week. I'm going to try to stick to whole foods after dinner tonight too, rather than traditional dessert.

I feel like the week three action steps left a little to be desired. I was expecting it to forbid sweets and for some reason because it does not rule against consuming sugar I can't make myself go that extra distance.

Before the challenge started I had give up chocolate six days a week. In week two I eliminated sugary pastries and sweet tea for breakfast, adding sugar to my cereal and eating dessert after lunch, the unplanned result of those successes was that I am now living within my calorie range. This week I am going to continue to sensibly eat-down the sugar added foods in my pantry and replace with no-sugar added varieties. As a personal preference I try to avoid artificial sweeteners at all costs but I find it is hidden just as neatly as real sugar. I also want to concentrate more on eating less treats even if my calorie range has room for it.

I find myself with less desire to work out now that my calories are in check. I cannot say for sure that the two are related (it could also be the heat) but I suspect if I meet my calorie range with whole nutritious foods I would have more of a drive to run and cycle, rather then when I horde my calories to save them for sweets.

I'm buckling down this week and attempting to limit myself to one dessert type food each day, while reaching but not exceeding my calorie range, I also want to spend less money on take out and consume less sodium, which may be messing with my weight.

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?
It's been a rough week. I had surgery on my hand, and worry about that led to ice cream and cookies for comfort. Everything's okay now, though!
How do you bust your sugar cravings? Fruit, some kind of protein, something whole-grain/high fiber.
What is your favorite low-sugar snack? Dried fruit (no sugar added)

Thanks to all my SparkFriends who have supported me through this journey to health!

ENNYAR27 Carbohydrates turn into simple sugars. That's why I have to limit things like bread and potatoes and such.. Think about the taste you get (on the roof of your mouth after eating something starchy. Same as a sugar buzz? That's why.

I just re-read the email about this challenge in breaking the sugar addiction. I didn't know that high sugar intake was related to poor vision (although I still blame my computer lol) and GOUT! which I also have! Hmm Interesting!

Today is absolutely theee worse day. I am well into my third week and today is by far, worse than any day. I have been an emotional wreck all day, I feel like I am starving myself and I want CANDY bad. I have eaten two oranges today and a teaspoon of peanut butter. I've had iced tea with splenda and a glass of diet dr. pepper, those things just aren't working. I want cookies and candy in the worse way.

It's an attitude thing. Attitude is everything.

Week 4 is going very well. Today, someone brought doughnut holes to the office and I was not even tempted- had a grapefruit as usual. I now think of doughnuts like eating a couple tablespoons of lard- yuk. I had a tablespoon of honey on plain Greek Yogurt for desert tonight and it was soooo good. Two hours later and I am still satisfied. I have also stopped drinking diet pop and use no artificial sweetener. For me, that seems to have something to do with sugar cravings.

I really haven't wanted baked goods or candy the last few days. I tried the Lipton Green Tea with Blueberry and Acai. At first I added a packet of Splenda but have stopped that and just have it plain. It is delicious and with the blueberry flavor, very satisfying. My go to snack is a small cup of Greek yogurt with a handful of strawberries or a half cup of cottage cheese with fruit or veggies. I have been cooking fresh foods and avoiding the prepackaged mixes and marinades, relying on whole grains, herbs, spices, etc. My weight has come down some and my workout sessions seem easier. I think this is due to eating foods that are fueling me rather than spiking my blood sugar followed by the crash. I do look forward to my fruit and veggies now and it seems like it is easier for me to identify when I am really hungry versus when I am just wanting to snack out of boredom or from stress.

I made it through Pi Day!!! I kept some raisins and an apple handy that day. I have noticed that I have not been drinking much diet pop since I started this. I don't even have the caffeine headaches either! My goal this week is to read the food labels. I noticed that my fat free yogurt has added sugar. So I did some research and one of the supermarkets brand name yogurts uses splenda in the yogurt. Is that a good thing?

Week 3! It's so funny that one of the tasks is to re-stock your pantry; I desperately need to go grocery shopping! I've been doing well in managing the cravings, which has stopped the sugar binges, and that's where iI want to be. I can enjoy a single serving of XYZ as long as it's a good day. It's the bad days that do me in (because sugar - and lots of it - fixes everything!). So with that in mind, I will make a grocery list that won't sabotage my efforts, and keep up with my 'water, protein, and movement" solutions to my cravings.

Keep up the great work everyone! emoticon

I am so happy that I joined this group. I decided to tame my sweet tooth by quitting sweets cold turkey! Here it is Week 3 and I can say I am doing very well. I only caved in and had something bad twice. I find chewing sugarless gum helps my craving pass. I also have a morning & afternoon snack of a fruit and some sort of protein and this has also helped.

Continued success to all in this group .... WE CAN DO IT!

I am surprised with the fact that I like natural yogurt and light cottage cheese. Sometimes I add pineapple (in juices, no added sugar), but I don't always need to. (sugar swap)

I went cold turkey like some others have. The only allowance I give in the added sugar department is soy milk which is not flavored but I know there is sugar added nonetheless. I did feel like buying a Dr. Pepper at a local convenience store on our family's pizza day, however - lol! That was strange in and of itself because I don't even buy pop for our family. I just had a strange craving! (sugar cravings)

Low-sugar snacks include shakes made with milk, frozen banana, and blended salted peanuts. No need for sugar because it is naturally sweet :-) I also enjoy a flavored tea in the evening with some lime - relaxing and satisfying. (low--sugar snacks)

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?
This has been much easier than I thought it would be. I've been able to swap out several things

How do you bust your sugar cravings?
I have been grabbing fruit instead or drinking more water

What is your favorite low-sugar snack?
It's not really a snack, but it's my Hills Bros French Vanilla Sugar Free Cappuccino (Only 50 calories per cup)

Yay! We've made it to Week 3!!! I'm human and I have had a couple of slips in the past two weeks, but I'm making a lot better choices now than I was before. Sweets are a sometimes treat and not a daily treat.

How are you doing with your sugar swaps? A sugar-free Jello cherry gelatin cup with a squirt of Reddi-Wip is my favorite swap. I did splurge this past Sunday. The Mr.'s b'day and St. Pat's all wrapped up into one party. I did partake with b'day cake and ice cream. I passed on the Irish potato dishes and breads. That was my first dessert in at least 2 weeks. Hey, I'm human. :)

How do you bust your sugar cravings? I'm following a low carb diet, Atkins. I am amazed that by following that diet, my carb cravings have virtually disappeared. They said that would happen. If I do get a craving, I try not to dwell on the cravings and get busy with something. Treat myself to a s/f Jello gelatin and Reddi-Wip. I make sure I get in all my water. A coffee w/Splenda and heavy whipping cream or tea w/Splenda drink satisfies pretty well.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack? One square of Lindt 85% or Ghirardelli 86% dark chocolate is a wonderful treat with a cup of espresso or coffee. I add 12 almonds for a good fat and fiber to the snack.

Trying my best to stay away from candy. Being eating a lot of fruit need to be hitting my bag of carrots more. I do have a fix in the morning though. I have 3 choices right now, because cereal was on sale this weekend, I have the chocolate cheerios which or awesome and have whole grains. Then I bought the new Krave cereal's. I got both types. The one with chocolate on the inside and the one with chocolate on the outside. The one with chocolate on the outside is almost to much. It kicks a sugar crave in to the dirt and leaves nothing behind but a few strains of grains.

Enjoy the moment

Actually my sugar swaps (also craving quelchers) are liquid, mostly because of my dehydration problem. I love hot tea, usually herbal although I also drink green. With whatever flavor they are they are sweet enough. Also fresh fruit and veggies. And I have been checking more often to see if my "hunger" is not really thirst. I take care of that with water.

Getting back to the fruits and veggies. Finally got all of the Valentines' chocolate finished. LOL It was a challenge not to fill my face every night. Now I am OK to get back to the gym. I had surgery on the 9th of Feb. and it was not nice to have to stay close to home for almost 2 months. emoticon
I have had a bad cold or allergies for the past two or three days and my appetite has not been the greatest. Lots of water, yogurt, tea and fruits mostly. Hopefully next week will be better.

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?
I eat more baby carrots, and other real foods. Most of my sugar cravings/consumption is unrelated to hunger, so if I am not hungry I am trying to swap for a different behavior entirely: exercise, walk around the office, self talk, journaling about it.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack? baby carrots, artificial crab sticks (I know, weird, but hey).

Overall, I'm excited with my progress, though I still struggle with the cravings from time to time.

I'm just starting week three and I have to tell you this challenge has been -- well-- a challenge. I have gone wrong on a couple of things. First of all--eating out. This was my personal challenge for the month. Now I have only done it 4 times this month but that was three more than I planned on. (The first was a wedding reception). I really need to learn how to make better choices and control myself when eating out. Although Two places I surprised myself. I ate half my meals and brought the rest home and at one I ordered a small dessert and ate three bites (key lime pie) SLOWLY and was satisfied. And I knew that the bites could have been even smaller. So I am learning. I am still having trouble with water intake although that too is getting better. Also my bad eating choices have given me swollen legs and feet and GOUT! Fun times! But even though I was going to do a "do over" on week two I decided to learn from my mistakes and continue on. So HUGS!

Yay!!! Week three! its pretty amazing how I control my cravings!

Well what can I add to my tea instead of sugar? As per my knowledge all sweeteners are chemicals. So what is the healthy option?

Plz suggest.

I am on week 3 and doing pretty well. I love reading the posts and keeping up with other's progress but the boards are so full. Anyway I have cut my sweets down to almost all fruit. I try to keep my house sugar free so I won't have to worry about giving in to temptation. Whenever I have cravings for chocolate I drink some no sugar added hot chocolate. I also like to make sundaes with sugar free chocolate pudding topped with sugar free cool whip decorated with sprinkles, cut up strawberries and nuts. It looks so good that I forget that I am eating sugar free not to mention it tastes great. I also like to make my own desserts so that I can control the amount of sugar in it but mostly I just try to avoid sugar and artifical sweetners altogether.
Here is to a great start to week three!!!

week 2 was quite a challenge and I did not do so well with the goals I set up for myself. I usually do well until dinner and that's the moment when it gets really tough.
Breakfast sweets are fruits or honey = no problem
Lunch - usually avoid the desert
snack = this one is hard. I wanted to have fruits or nuts... but usually I don't follow my program and go for chocolate, cookies, cake or so
Dinner = always want desert after dinner. if I let myself go for one piece of chocolate or something sweet I am lost... that's the moment when I get out of control and continue eating...

This week, since I understand better what is going on I will try the following:
- afternoons: I will allow myself one serving of anything sweet without chocolate
- after dinner and evening: kefir or yogurt or milk with honey

I really want to avoid chocolate at all cost this week. It is my favorite binge food. If I have a piece, it is really hard to stop. Especially, if I have one at night.

Have a good week everybody!

Wow - week 3 already. I have been reading labels and am amazed at how many foods have added sugar. I gave up Pepsi -- which was difficult at first -- but I don't miss it any more. Chocolate won't be as easy . . . . . so instead of giving it up, I've bought smarter chocolate snack foods! That's progress - lol!!!

Water has been the biggest help for me. Before I reach for any type of food, I drink a glass or two of water. Most times it satisfies me and the munching urge passes!

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?
-Pretty good. I've been having smoothies. :)

How do you bust your sugar cravings?
-Make sure I eat protein at my meals. If I'm not hungry, chew some gum or drink water. If I am hungry, I'll have some nuts or something.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack?
- nuts or V8 reduced sodium.

Had a great 2nd week. I am amazed at how little I want anything with sugar, now that I have cut so much out of my diet. I thought very hard about stopping for an ice cream yesterday, and didn't even let the words slip out of my mouth! Went home and had a big bowl of berries instead! I am ready for week 3!

Starting level 3. Doing well with the sweets. No chocolate. My sweets are coming from fruits.

I can't believe how fast week 3 has snuck up on us! My biggest hurdle that I've gotten over is drinking more water instead of drinking juice as water. What I've found is that having a couple of the soda siphons in the refrigerator is really helpful.
Instead of drinking so much juice, I'm trying to eat more whole fruits - and savor every bite. I find the texture of the fruit makes it more enjoyable.

My most successful swap has been eating raw carrots or an apple on the drive home from work, that seems to help with the craving of sugar and also a boost of energy. I have to admit it was easier during the week than the weekend. For St. Paddy's I gave in and had green mint ice cream on Saturday and Sunday. Now back to work.

Good Morning to All! I see we are on week three. Time goes by so fast. I am not getting a real good handle on my sugar craving. However, I am substituting sweets for fruit after work. That is a start.
I have a real problem with sugar free items so this is not going to help me any. I'll do the best I can to cut down as much as possible.
Wishing everyone a good day.

I've been trying to eat more fruits so no problem. Plus I have a party for one of my finals this week that I have to bring something to. I'm making strawberries/banana fat free cool whip. More fruit then cool whip.

Enjoy the moment

I am eating fruit as my sugar swap - black grapes work from my sweet craving.

I got a new water bottle and have been drinking all day... keeping it ice cold has been keeping me full and not craving nearly as often as I used to.

I love fage greek yogurt, I have it w/ fruit or a drizzle of honey. It's a great low sugar snack :)

Yay week 3!
As hard as I thought this challenge would be, I am please to say that so far this is the ONLY challenge I've participated in, that I've stayed on track without needing extra time.

How are you doing with your sugar swaps? Pretty good. I'm using Splenda in my tea instead of sugar. I haven't had any koolaid, but I will use Splenda in that as well when I do have some.

How do you bust your sugar cravings? Most of the time, I have to ignore them (and drink water instead)... or find a sugar free version.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack? I don't know. I could come up with a LOT of low sugar or sugar free snacks that I shouldn't be eating lol.... but if I'm still staying in the healthy range....fruits would be my go-to snack.

So my dark chocolate has worked quite well, it satisfied my desire for a sweet with out causing a huge jump in my blood sugar levels, and doesn't make me want to binge on more!

I am eating baked apples, instead of candy bars.
I try to imagine I have blinders on when I am in the check out aisles where all the temptations are. Or I use self check outs, where there is no time to stand around and wait and no temptations.
One of my favorites is Chobani.

I have made it through two doughnut situations at the office by grabbing a grapefruit and eating the whole thing. They are sweet enough for me and really fill me up. It also takes some time to peel and eat it- I can "entertain" myself for a half hour. It has become much easier to resist candy- it doesn't taste as good anymore. When I get "the urge", I have 85% cocoa chocolate bars available and eat 2-4 squares. They do not taste good enough to have more, but I enjoy the chocolate flavor and the consistency. Works for me! I think Week 3 will be easier.
