I have been pretty successful swapping fruit for sugar; however, even after eating the fruit, I have to distract myself from still giving into a sugar craving. It's still difficult, but I find eating fruit, trying to keep up with water intake, and changing my environment even if going for a short walk, has helped. Favorite low sugar snack: unsweetened apple sauce (it's easy to pack and grab when you are on the go).

I seem to be going "above and beyond" what the program is doing because I'm not eating any sugar free- no sugar added products either... and this week it told me to switch out products with them. No thanks. seems like something that should of been done in the first or even the second week. ;)

How are you doing with your sugar swaps?

Doing great. Fruit is finally sweet enough for me.

How do you bust your sugar cravings?

Fruit. But I found that most of the time if I'm craving sugar, which I really haven't done since the first week that it's because I'm hungry, and eating a normal snack of any kind will give up the craving.

What is your favorite low-sugar snack? I'm trying really hard to not eat anything with sugar in the ingredients, so I'm not sure how to answer that. my favorite snacks right now are fruits.

I Have been doing good all week. The only thing I have had had was a few mints or a hard candy when my mouth got dry while driving the bus.
Not bad considering I pass up all other treats. emoticon

Fran,

It sounds like you are doing much the same diet changes as I am and my weight loss has slowed right down, as well. A friend had a look at my diet and suggested I add calories to sort of 'shock' my system back into losing. I've increased the calories up to about 1500 but am getting those calories through protein/veg/fruit. The scale is starting to move again. Maybe that would help you, as well. I just keep reminding myself that I am playing the long game. :)

Just starting week three. Disappointed that my weight is at a standstill. The first week I did not have 100% no sugar but for the whole second week no sugar at all. I have even given up flour and keep my calories under 1200 a day. Grrrr

I finished week 3. I felt more in control of the sweets. I kept to my only two peppermints a day and that satisfied me. I plan on keeping to that starting this 4th week.

I'm glad to be starting week 3. I had to redo week two because of a little melt down I had. A lot of what we have to do for week 3 I've been doing for the last 3 weeks because I'm trying to lose weight. So I'm hoping week 3 will be easier then week 2 was for me.

I was doing great with my sweets until I joined friends for a wine and chocolate tasting on Friday. I was looking really good with my red sweater tucked in and confident I could handle a few bites of chocolate...wrong! The chocolates and wine were so nicely matched I had to eat every serving to get the "full" taste! Today I am paying for my adventure and will have a week of working even harder at the gym...yikes!

I'm doing good. Haven't had chocolate in almost 2 weeks. I was also surprised that when my husband asked me to taste some ice cream yesterday, I almost spit it out because it was so sweet. That surprised me.

I'm on day 10 of the DASH for weight loss program, so still in the first 2 weeks of having minimal carbs. It's really helping me with cravings for breads, pastas, sweets, etc. And I'm down 9 pounds. Monday I'll reintroduce fruits and whole grains. This feels good.

This morning for breakfast, we went out. I had French Toast with butter and powdered sugar, turkey sausage, and an over easy egg. I ate no syrup with the French Toast. I normally ask for extra butter and extra powder sugar. The serving size is 3 pieces (1-1/2 slices of Texas Toast). I didn't eat the extra butter they brought (the guy at the next table enjoyed it) and I didn't ask for extra powdered sugar. I only ate two pieces of the french toast (leaving one on my plate). I had hot tea and ice water with lemon to drink. I have managed to cut sweetener out of my tea. I think I am conquering my "sweet" cravings and after 66 years of eating sweets, that is no small feat. Tracking my food has helped me know that I can and am eating more healthy food. I still need to start eating lower sodium foods.

Today is the first day of the rest of my Life.

So far, no sweets. My husband has also given up his ice cream that he used to have every night, so that helps. Had Italian last night and garlic always makes me want chocolate. Decided to brush my teeth and stay away from the kitchen. Must admit, I do miss chocolate! emoticon

My family and I have been loving the Steamables! I know it's lazy, but that's why junk food is so appealing sometimes. You just take the veggies out of the freezer, throw the bag in the microwave and in 5 minutes, you have perfectly steamed veggies. One of my sons eats a whole bag himself, but it's really increased our veggie intake. emoticon emoticon

Had a dish of ice cream last night just because someone else brought it into the house and offered it. It didn't blow up my day and I didn't go back for more....that has always been my downfall. The rest of the week has been on track. My veggies are diminishing in the fridge so I'll have to get out and shop for those good swaps. This is one of my tests in moderation.

What swaps are working for everyone here?

You will mess up at the beginning. You need to be mindful of what you need to eat and as the challenge continues you will get better at it.

I have had some difficulty staying on track and I have been experiencing some bloating and some other stomach issues. Thank you for bringing this subject up.
It helps me to get back on track.

Good for you JSKOVGARD1..that inspires me! GGarza, I know what you mean and while I think its good that my body reminds me when I don't make good choices (with that bloated feeling) I have not really learned how to manage the making better choices part. I made banana soft serve "ice cream" from one of those recipes associated with this thread and it was good but got me thinking (and unfortunately doing) sweets last night. This morning I feel bloated and showed a +3 pounds on my weekly weigh in. Bummer.

Hi, I also have this problem. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. The MD did a Insulin resistance lab test and I tested normal on my blood sugar but had 20% more insulin in my blood to maintain a normal sugar then a healthy person. He put me on Metformin but I have since lost most of the weight and try to keep away from sugar and processed carbs. I have a binge eating disorder so slip at times and really regret it because I feel awful for hours after. I was told that I probably will be diabetic in time because the damage that I had already done to my beta cells ( those that produce insulin) but I could hopefully with maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle put it off for years and who knows maybe ward it off entirely. I am not perfect but keep fighting the good fight. emoticon

I went to get checked and thankfully it's not diabetes. He said that after some time your stomach gets used to eating clean so when you eat fatty foods again it has a harder time digesting it. The dizziness he wasn't sure and said that it may have been because of the lack of sleep. It hasn't happened again but I am being very careful.

GGARZA2013, It sounds like diabetes to me even though I am not a Doctor or Nurse I do know something about health. Being thirsty with no reason is a high sign of Diabetes. I hope you do not have it but you should have your Doctor look into it soon.

I am not eating sweets every day so this is not a challenge for me, but I do want to stop eating as many sweets as I do now.

Week 2 seemed to be a bit harder than I thought. I started out well, cutting out and down on the sweets. I managed to have one sugar cookie from the dozen my mother-in-law brought home. Then, I met up with an old friend and we went out for a night on the town. She wanted to go to Dairy Queen and I thought I could handle it. I had a small Banana Cream Pie blizzard. The next day I felt awful. I felt dizzy and bloated all day.

I don't know if this was normal or coincidence but it cured me for the rest of the week. I was doing fine again until we made brownies. The same thing happened again. I felt dizzy and out of sorts. I also developed an immense thirst.

Does anyone know if this is normal?

Instead of sugary cereals in the morning, I have a banana. Instead of having a quick and easy candy bar for snack, I have an apple. It's working. Slow but steady gains the top of the mountain.

I'm having a hard time finding good fruit. Stores carry plenty but they taste bland. They look ripe but taste green. Going to organic sections mean shelling out dough that's not easy to come by. I try to use farmers markets but with my hours and their locations, they are either closed by the time I get there or are on days that I can't. One fruit and veggie stand I pass by on my way home from work is inconsistent. I'm not quitting, just expressing the challenges in my particular area. I've even tried to frozen but they aren't always reliable for taste and freshness. Onward and upward!

I'm with you on the fruit, Somar.

Eventually your palate seems to re-educate itself away from the 'sugary' taste. I had a flat white from a coffee chain and, although, it was claimed to be sugar-free, I could taste sweetness in it.

I'm making real progress on liberating myself from turning to sugary stuff as a comfort fix!

Can't see it but I'm sure my liver is saying, 'Thank you!!'

Today's the last day of week 3. Today, I'm more conscientious about what I snack on. In the past, it wouldn't have been a problem for me to munch on high sugar, high fat snacks. Now, I ask the important question... am I hungry? Because if I am, then I should be seeking out the right things.

Yes, time has gone very quickly.
There have been ups and downs throughout
this challenge. There are many emotional
feelings involved with the world of sweets.
If we are happy we want to celebrate with sweets
and if we are sad or angry sweets makes us feel better and soothes us.
It is going to continue to be a challenge with sweets
We will just have to learn to deal with it by having it in moderation.
Good luck to all of us who have to deal with it. emoticon

It's amazing how Week 3, for me, is almost over - 2 more days.

I was having some major cravings yesterday. I think there were some emotions popping up.
emoticon
In the end, I ate a little bit of a sugary snack (not processed or refined). It took the edge off long enough for me to figure out what was going on. It's amazing how we use sweets to satisfy certain emotions. Still woke up weighing less than yesterday so that was a relief.

You're right Somar12570.

That's what I want to do. I want to manage it without feeling like I am restricted. When I feel restricted I tend to lose control and have everything that I shouldn't.
I continue to manage my sugar but I do partake of it in moderation.

I think, for me, I'm wanting to continue something that's manageable. I don't want total restriction because that makes me feel worse when I fail. I want moderation. I bought a Silly Zak's bar yesterday. Ate half then and half today. I guess I'm not just conquering a sweet tooth but the guilt for having one.

Starting week three again, Did well last week with still tracking ,even my goofs, and eating more fruit, but have to work on having a less sugary pantry, and swaps for my sweet cravings. I Think Reading labels religiously and reading what others are swapping will help a lot, this time around.

To be happy and healthy in body, mind and spirit ,and set the best example for them, so that my children will be too. That's what I aspire to., to be the best ME I can be!

So far the sugar swap by using gum instead of treat while at work is working fine! I still have that urge after eating meals so I bought these thin cookies that are awesome. 1 cookie has like 27 calorie so I can eat 2 without feeling like I ate a lot and still have a little sugar.
The biggest challenge I am having is Juice. I like Juice but after reading some of the ingredients in that sneaky sugar article I can't find a good juice that atleast doesn't have 1 of those ingredients. It's frustrating and no I don't like a V8!

Last week was a ruff one-4 days staying someone very close in the hospital. Vending machines need to stock healthy food. Thank goodness for the drugstore down the street.

I'm starting week 3 today. This will help getting back on track with fruit and veggies. If last week was a test and I passed - this week will be much easier.

On my way to a healthier life.

Week three - took me two weeks, but I did well overall. Slipped up with some late night ice cream, but fresh fruit is really helping to provide an alternative to cookies and such.

Today starting week 3, and its been going good. before I started week 3 I had a chocolate bar and I had to drink lots of water after that because the taste was nasty. so I believe I am done with sweet. I will find other ways if the craving comes up again. I love my fruit and vegetables.

Week 3 is over and I did horribly. I do fine with my regular food every day- I eat healthy and stay within my calorie range but I have had one sweet treat at least five days this week. It has not been that big of a treat but it is sugary none the less. I think I might have to allow myself one a day every few days instead of being off it altogether because being off it altogether just makes me want it more!

Almost to the end of week three for me.
Had a couple bad days this week when I went overboard on the snacks. Still trying to substitute fruit and other good snacks for the cookies, candy and cakes. Finding I am eating more grains and carbs though. Need to find some balance somewhere.

Much easier this week with the cravings. Making better choices with swapping food. Really would like my husband to quit bringing choc. chip cookies in to the house.

Improving with the sugar intake, but not with carbs and protein. So what I'm not eating in sugar, I'm probably substituting it with too much protein and good carbs. In other words, portion control is dis-controlled. Got up a pound.
