I have had some difficulty staying on track and I have been experiencing some bloating and some other stomach issues. Thank you for bringing this subject up.
It helps me to get back on track.

Good for you JSKOVGARD1..that inspires me! GGarza, I know what you mean and while I think its good that my body reminds me when I don't make good choices (with that bloated feeling) I have not really learned how to manage the making better choices part. I made banana soft serve "ice cream" from one of those recipes associated with this thread and it was good but got me thinking (and unfortunately doing) sweets last night. This morning I feel bloated and showed a +3 pounds on my weekly weigh in. Bummer.

My screen name is not very positive BECAUSE IVE TRIED SO HARD FOR SO LONG but I am trying to keep moving forward with my tiny baby steps...changed it from weary skeptic to a more positive desire to be still in my spirit and active in my body!

Hi, I also have this problem. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. The MD did a Insulin resistance lab test and I tested normal on my blood sugar but had 20% more insulin in my blood to maintain a normal sugar then a healthy person. He put me on Metformin but I have since lost most of the weight and try to keep away from sugar and processed carbs. I have a binge eating disorder so slip at times and really regret it because I feel awful for hours after. I was told that I probably will be diabetic in time because the damage that I had already done to my beta cells ( those that produce insulin) but I could hopefully with maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle put it off for years and who knows maybe ward it off entirely. I am not perfect but keep fighting the good fight. emoticon

I went to get checked and thankfully it's not diabetes. He said that after some time your stomach gets used to eating clean so when you eat fatty foods again it has a harder time digesting it. The dizziness he wasn't sure and said that it may have been because of the lack of sleep. It hasn't happened again but I am being very careful.

GGARZA2013, It sounds like diabetes to me even though I am not a Doctor or Nurse I do know something about health. Being thirsty with no reason is a high sign of Diabetes. I hope you do not have it but you should have your Doctor look into it soon.

I am not eating sweets every day so this is not a challenge for me, but I do want to stop eating as many sweets as I do now.

Week 2 seemed to be a bit harder than I thought. I started out well, cutting out and down on the sweets. I managed to have one sugar cookie from the dozen my mother-in-law brought home. Then, I met up with an old friend and we went out for a night on the town. She wanted to go to Dairy Queen and I thought I could handle it. I had a small Banana Cream Pie blizzard. The next day I felt awful. I felt dizzy and bloated all day.

I don't know if this was normal or coincidence but it cured me for the rest of the week. I was doing fine again until we made brownies. The same thing happened again. I felt dizzy and out of sorts. I also developed an immense thirst.

Does anyone know if this is normal?

Instead of sugary cereals in the morning, I have a banana. Instead of having a quick and easy candy bar for snack, I have an apple. It's working. Slow but steady gains the top of the mountain.

I'm having a hard time finding good fruit. Stores carry plenty but they taste bland. They look ripe but taste green. Going to organic sections mean shelling out dough that's not easy to come by. I try to use farmers markets but with my hours and their locations, they are either closed by the time I get there or are on days that I can't. One fruit and veggie stand I pass by on my way home from work is inconsistent. I'm not quitting, just expressing the challenges in my particular area. I've even tried to frozen but they aren't always reliable for taste and freshness. Onward and upward!

I'm with you on the fruit, Somar.

Eventually your palate seems to re-educate itself away from the 'sugary' taste. I had a flat white from a coffee chain and, although, it was claimed to be sugar-free, I could taste sweetness in it.

I'm making real progress on liberating myself from turning to sugary stuff as a comfort fix!

Can't see it but I'm sure my liver is saying, 'Thank you!!'

Today's the last day of week 3. Today, I'm more conscientious about what I snack on. In the past, it wouldn't have been a problem for me to munch on high sugar, high fat snacks. Now, I ask the important question... am I hungry? Because if I am, then I should be seeking out the right things.

Yes, time has gone very quickly.
There have been ups and downs throughout
this challenge. There are many emotional
feelings involved with the world of sweets.
If we are happy we want to celebrate with sweets
and if we are sad or angry sweets makes us feel better and soothes us.
It is going to continue to be a challenge with sweets
We will just have to learn to deal with it by having it in moderation.
Good luck to all of us who have to deal with it. emoticon

It's amazing how Week 3, for me, is almost over - 2 more days.

I was having some major cravings yesterday. I think there were some emotions popping up.
emoticon
In the end, I ate a little bit of a sugary snack (not processed or refined). It took the edge off long enough for me to figure out what was going on. It's amazing how we use sweets to satisfy certain emotions. Still woke up weighing less than yesterday so that was a relief.

You're right Somar12570.

That's what I want to do. I want to manage it without feeling like I am restricted. When I feel restricted I tend to lose control and have everything that I shouldn't.
I continue to manage my sugar but I do partake of it in moderation.

I think, for me, I'm wanting to continue something that's manageable. I don't want total restriction because that makes me feel worse when I fail. I want moderation. I bought a Silly Zak's bar yesterday. Ate half then and half today. I guess I'm not just conquering a sweet tooth but the guilt for having one.

Starting week three again, Did well last week with still tracking ,even my goofs, and eating more fruit, but have to work on having a less sugary pantry, and swaps for my sweet cravings. I Think Reading labels religiously and reading what others are swapping will help a lot, this time around.

To be happy and healthy in body, mind and spirit ,and set the best example for them, so that my children will be too. That's what I aspire to., to be the best ME I can be!

So far the sugar swap by using gum instead of treat while at work is working fine! I still have that urge after eating meals so I bought these thin cookies that are awesome. 1 cookie has like 27 calorie so I can eat 2 without feeling like I ate a lot and still have a little sugar.
The biggest challenge I am having is Juice. I like Juice but after reading some of the ingredients in that sneaky sugar article I can't find a good juice that atleast doesn't have 1 of those ingredients. It's frustrating and no I don't like a V8!

Last week was a ruff one-4 days staying someone very close in the hospital. Vending machines need to stock healthy food. Thank goodness for the drugstore down the street.

I'm starting week 3 today. This will help getting back on track with fruit and veggies. If last week was a test and I passed - this week will be much easier.

On my way to a healthier life.

Week three - took me two weeks, but I did well overall. Slipped up with some late night ice cream, but fresh fruit is really helping to provide an alternative to cookies and such.

Today starting week 3, and its been going good. before I started week 3 I had a chocolate bar and I had to drink lots of water after that because the taste was nasty. so I believe I am done with sweet. I will find other ways if the craving comes up again. I love my fruit and vegetables.

Week 3 is over and I did horribly. I do fine with my regular food every day- I eat healthy and stay within my calorie range but I have had one sweet treat at least five days this week. It has not been that big of a treat but it is sugary none the less. I think I might have to allow myself one a day every few days instead of being off it altogether because being off it altogether just makes me want it more!

Almost to the end of week three for me.
Had a couple bad days this week when I went overboard on the snacks. Still trying to substitute fruit and other good snacks for the cookies, candy and cakes. Finding I am eating more grains and carbs though. Need to find some balance somewhere.

Improving with the sugar intake, but not with carbs and protein. So what I'm not eating in sugar, I'm probably substituting it with too much protein and good carbs. In other words, portion control is dis-controlled. Got up a pound.

Week 3...going to stick with avoiding diet sodas....sugars by replacing the soda with more flavored water and eating fruit when craving something sweet. Tracking my calories and having a tendency to be consuming too much fats....in portion to carbs and protein SO also going to work on reducing my fat intake. Weigh in tomorrow and nervous to see if I have lost anything...been three weeks and not much weight loss seen...ugh. Need some encouragement so also going to reward myself with $$ per pound towards a reward vacation if I meet my goals by November!!!

Seem to be doing well with the sugar cravings...going for the fresh and unsweetened fruit.
Gonna have to go to the store soon as I am getting low on fresh fruits, and healthy treats.
On my list are plain yogurt, oranges, bananas, and other fresh fruit. Need to find some
of the foods without sugar or artificial sweeteners added. Want to be able to use natural and wholesome sweeteners in my foods to keep the sugar spikes down.

Today was lots better but not perfect. I am in the workshop all weekend and I stopped at Starbuck's on the way there this morning. In addition to my plain coffee I got a mini vanilla scone. Checked my insulin and ate the scone with my coffee. The day went very smoothly.
On the way home I stopped again at Starbuck's--all the mini's were waving at me like crazy, BUT I was strong thanks to all you guys and knowing I'd be reporting in.

One more day tomorrow in the workshop. Hmmmm what will the day bring? Stay tuned!

I have my moments, especially when I'm lonely, overwhelmed, or upset. And I know where the kids' cookies are. I have had several moments when I had to stop myself from rationalizing why it would be okay for me to have just one, just one little Oreo. I've done exceptionally well with my sucrose fast, and the pounds are falling off. When I went to see my doctor last week, she said she was worried that I had lost so much weight since the last time I saw her (about a month ago, give or take). She said that as long as it was on purpose ... Week 4 should be a breeze lol

Forgive yourself and move on.

I'm glad you are OK now, PFERG66. That's scary.

I hope today is a normal day for me in terms of sugary stuff. I think so because it's a stay at home and relax day. emoticon

Hey everyone! It happens to all of us, doesn't it? Maybe it's a moon phase....yeah, I wish!!! I had a low blood sugar episode today during a painting workshop. I overcompensated so I wouldn't "cause a scene"--needless to say it was over my calorie/fat requirements and contained some sugar.

I will be taking less insulin and will risk having a higher reading during the day.

Just finished up week two, starting out on week three.
This is my second time doing the sweet tooth challenge...definitely going to finish it this time.

Gonna be looking for ways to swap out the sugar laden sweets with other healthy choices.
Would like to avoid the artificial sweeteners as well, as they affect me very much like sugar does...keeps me wound up too much. Learning more about healthy sugar options...low glycemic choices as opposed to the refined white sugar and artificial ingredients.

Woke up in the middle of the night wanting cookies, ate a small bowl of cherries and a whole wheat cracker and was okay. Some days I don't crave sweets and don't even eat my small square of dark chocolate. I did not eat dark chocolate until I started taming my sweet tooth.

Yes, that's the attitude PFETG66! This is what an 'alfajor' looks like:

OK, being accountable, today I decided to eat an 'alfajor' (a double cookie filled with caramel like stuff). I needed it as a way of not throwing the towel. That was it. The rest was fine.

Day one of week 3, swap out sugar foods for sugar free foods, I am going to eat more fruit. I plan on getting some grapes this week to eat when I have a sweet craving. I am going to keep eating my small square or two of dark chocolate, I don't pig out on it like I do when I eat milk chocolate.

This past week was super busy! I did a pretty good job at controlling my sugar intake until the last couple of days. Yesterday I did not have adequate food around so when I got really hungry I started seeking out sweets! I haven't had a chance to do any of the action steps, so I'm going to re-do this week before moving on. One good change I've made is drinking more water, and using fresh fruits or herbs and cucumber to give it flavor naturally.

I've really been reading the labels over the last week (week 2). I've stocked up on dates, nuts, fruit and chai tea to reach for when I'm munchy instead. I've also find that dark chocolate (at least 70%) will quickly satisfy a dessert need with only a square or two. I'm consciously choosing to not cut it all out all the time as I know that won't be long term sustainable (especially with a whole bunch of family events and a vacation coming up). Instead I'm trying to find substitutes and strategies. The one place I'm really struggling with making healthier substitutions is dessert at restaurants. We eat out pretty rarely so when we do, it's a huge treat and I always follow it with dessert.

I thoroughly understand the after meals sugar problem. I live in a retirement village and dinner is served. They always have desserts. It's a major problem-so hard not to eat a dessert.

Finally week 3! I had to de-sugar my house to manage my cravings and that was a big help. I had no idea now mindless some of my sugar habit was. I still miss sugar after meals. That seems to be the hardest habit to overcome. I need to work on more ideas to get me away from the table and get my mind on something else after meals. The mindfulness is a help, too. I had no idea how many times a day I would think of eating something sweet just because I had gotten frustrated with something and I knew sweets were available. I have also had success with reminding myself that there is one day a week when I will allow myself a favorite treat...one that I will have to go out and buy. I feel less deprived that day.

Step 1: Stop and think. Step 2: Take a deep breath. Step 3: Make a good choice.

For a while in the first two weeks I just had to go cold turkey. It was very uncomfortable, but as I've said before, that just made me angry at what I'd done to myself to make my body crave that sweet.
On occasion now I will have a piece of dried fruit such as an apricot, date or fig. I treat that like having candy and nibble it slowly. That has worked for me.
Now that I've been at it for some time, there are evenings when I do not have anything more than a regular meal. This challenge does work.

Joyfully keeping on...keeping on!

I've been looking through some of the other messages, and it sounds like there are others who have trouble with the "after the meal" sweets habit, like I do. I think I've just been doing it for so long that a meal doesn't feel complete unless I finish it off with something sweet. This seems to be my toughest "sweet" habit to kick. Substituting fruit doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I have made successful substitutions at other times...like a cup of decaf tea when I want "a little something" later in the evening, and fruit when I'm scrounging for a treat at work, but this after a meal desire is the toughest one for me. What have others done?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away...and, remember "slow and steady wins the race".

This is only my opinion--I think "Sugar Free" means no sugar, in place of sugar, virtually no added sugar, etc.
I think SF=not sugar.
What does anyone else say on this?

I'm kind of new here and want to know if using the SF products isn't counted when it comes to cutting out sugar. I'd appreciate an explanation as I'm a real dessert (goodie) freak and I need to plan how I'm going to do this......thanks....:)

I've had a good day. I've been having trouble between 8 and 9 at night. I made it thru with a small snack. It really felt good. I still need to cut out the sweets at dinner.. Where I live they serve dinner and always have desserts. I don't get the ice cream but I have been getting sugar free desserts. I would like to do this sporadically rather than every night. I'm doing so much better though.

Love hearing about all the progress being made!! Very inspiring.
I actually have finished the challenge but like to read all the challenge posts.
My main sweet thing was some sort-of pre bedtime treat--dried cranberries or half a Nature Valley Sweet n' Salty bar. They were never necessary and now, a couple of months later, they are just past history.

I have become more conscious about what added sugars are in my foods, buying the sugar free or reduced fat version of most things I buy on a regular basis.

When a craving comes up I will go to the fridge and grab an ice cold water bottle, I will drink most of that and just ignore the craving until it goes away.

I started eating more Greek yogurt, and putting Splenda and 2% milk in my coffee instead of sugar and flavored creamers. (I am using a flavored coffee instead) I have gotten over my longing for sweet tea for the most part, that was the hardest part for me. Me and the boyfriend would make a 3qt batch of sweet tea (1 1/2 cups of sugar) every night, or a 3 gallons jug that last us a week. I am thinking about making some with the splenda instead but I have done good without it all together so I don't know if I need to, I probably will eventually, just not yet.

Good luck to everyone! emoticon

Changes are continuing to occur here, all good. I no longer automatically go looking for sweets after lunch (which I would start thinking about even before taking my first bite of lunch!) An apple now suffices, which I would normally not have eaten in my eagerness to get to the 'good stuff.' So two big improvements really.

I've come to the conclusion that dessert after dinner needs to be banished as well, not because it's 'bad' for me, but because it's so hard to check once I get started. I'm beginning to sub in a strong cinnamon herb tea, which is surprisingly satisfying. I'm clear on the fact that I'm not hungry when I reach for sugar, so if I can get through the first few seconds of urges, I'm now in the clear.

In the beginning, those urges weren't as quick to subside, so enormous progress has indeed occurred, for which I am most thankful!

Nothing tastes as good as being thing feels!

Just started week 3. Haven't had sugar for about 3-4 days. This is little short of a miracle for me. Looking forward to months of no sugar - that would be amazing!

Chugging along--I've been checking out another site for when the challenge is over--TWEETYFIT suggested we look into it. Look up the "No S diet" and see what you think...

It sounds like everyone here is doing just great. emoticon I was M.I.A. part of last week because I got some kind of stomach bug. I didn't throw up but I had a lot of bathroom "runs" and just a general feeling of malaise. The only time of the year that I really reach for ice cream "products" are during the warmer months. However, here in Georgia, that can mean 8 months. LOL. MoodyKeys, have you ever tried the no sugar added Original fudgesicles. I heard about them about 6 years ago and there is always a box in my freezer. They are so chocolatey it is hard to believe they are sugar free.

Since I am also in a fruit n vegetable challenge the month of April, it has really helped me move my hand away from the sugar towards fruit. I have been eating more frozen berries (red cherries, half frozen are fantastic on a bowl of cereal!) as well as finding non-sugar substitutes for when I too feel like "indulging": Two Atkins bars that I like are the chocolate coconut and the caramel chocolate nut bar. The first tastes like a Mounds bar and the second reminds me of a salted nut roll. They do have sugar alcohols but if you have just one per day (when you want something like that) they really do the "trick".

Take care Pam

I went with my family for ice cream last night and didn't order anything. I wasn't tempted I actually didn't want anything. It was a great feeling.

My best replacement snacks so far have been small apples, Blue Diamond roasted almonds and Blue Diamond Blueberry almonds. Also, sugar-free jello helped me avoid cookies. emoticon emoticon

Best wishes, Candy
