hmmmmm....my triggers are not so much sweets but salty and crunchy but if the kids or hubby are eating some candy, I might sneak some in just the same, so im not left out, rofl.
But I think the worst thing is instead of just taking a few pieces is taking the bag with you. So not only for myself but for my family regardless if its chips, candy, cookies, etc.... no body leaves the kitchen with the bag, box, package, NADA. Take a few pieces and just close it up and put it away. That way at least were not mindless eating something in front of the tv or pc. Which we all know we can def. over eat when were not thinking.

So these are my things IM avoiding.

Wish me luck and for all good luck and much success

My biggest trigger is chocolate. After that pastries take the cake. Pun not intended. I am keeping most chocolate out of the house; candy bars and bags of M&Ms. Stress and upsets seem to be the worst for me. I am working on keeping my attitude upbeat and my hubby is really helping. If you have any ideas, just put them down for they may help me accomplish my goal.

tHANKS FOR YOUR ANSWER. NO I DRINK TONS OF WATER. I THINK IF I DRINK ANY MORE WATER I WOULD PROBABLY DROWN FROM THE INSIDE OUT. I WILL DO THE FRUIT THING. I LOVE FRUIT AND PERHAPS THAT WILL BE MORE SATIABLE ANYWAYS. LET'S HOPE IT WORKS. TONIGHT IS THE FIRST NIGHT. WISH ME TONS OF STRENGTH.

Michelletal, how about just a glass of water? Or fruit cut into sticks, that's fun to eat and good for you.

My biggest trigger is eating sugar after a meal. Since I start eating it when I'm already satisfied, there's no clear stopping point.

My second trigger would be eating sweets when I'm alone... I'm sure I don't have to explain that one! emoticon

Third trigger is general snacking-- if I have something outside. Of a meal, more than half the time it is something sweet.

My trigger is anything from cookies, a piece of chocolate, a toffee, marshmallows, jellybeans and believe it or not - a bag of crisps can get me started. I just mustn't have "one" or "two". It never stops there. I don't have a sweet tooth, I just love eating. But certain times of the day I "need" sweet more than other times. Today is my day 1. I am a little scared. I stopped smoking 16 months ago, and I remember what the withdrawals were like. It's very uncomfortable giving up something. You experience a feeling of loss. Funny enough, my sweet tooth was born when i quit smoking. It seems i replaced the one addiction with the other. Night times will be hard for me because my hubby and I like to sit with a delicious bowl of creamy Bar One ice-cream together and dig in. mmm.... what can I replace this sugar addiction with?.... any ideas? Something good for me.... I am wanting to take better care of myself....

Trigger... open bag of candy in the house. Luckily, my DH is o.k. without having candy around because it's a trigger for him too.

Triggers? Where do I start. I cannot have free access to chocolate, pre-sweetened cereal, pizza, Oreos, baked goods, ice cream, candy bars, and probably others, but you get the idea. I have a terrible sweet tooth.

I too, have a sugar problem, but have learned that I can have 3 Jolly Ranchers hard candies for 70 calories. Maybe, that would work for you. I am not triggered by these as much, and it so far is a nice sweet after dinner snack treat.
Maybe that would also work for you. Try it and see if it works for you!

I am still abstinent from my favorite sugary treat, it. Is getting a little easier to not eat them and I have found a replacement treat. I still will be glad when the month is over, and I can add them back into my food plan, as long as as I log the daily calories. I guess what that means is that I only have a daily reprieve of my sugary choice food, by being conscious and aware of my food choices and making a conscious decision to abstain from that for
I've realized that one of my biggest triggers is to watch TV and eating sugary treats.

My problem is sugar period. Anything sweet that is not natural(fruit) starts me off on a binge. I am okay with fake sweeteners but I really do not like using them so I am really trying to limit the sweets. Now for some reason I am craving salty and crunchy which is as bad as sugar, so maybe I should start allowing myself a couple of really good luscious small treats every few days. Experimenting to find out what will work best for me.

My trigger is wanting to relax and enjoy a cup of decaf, but, most times I also want something to go with the coffee whether I am hungry or not. This week instead of reaching for a cookie or graham cracker I have eaten fruit.

My worse trigger is having a candy dish sitting out or an hour before bed when I just need 1 little thing to cut the craving. 1 hershey kiss turns into 2 and then maybe another maybe more.
I have been just getting a small bowl of special K and just skipping the "1, maybe 2, maybe 3, maybe more pieces of chocolate"

I think my worst triggers are open bags and boxes and containers...
After all, they're already open, right?!

What I've been doing is NOT opening anything, and taping shut those
that were open - it's another psychological trick, but it's helping!

Chocolate is my biggest down fall, followed by Oreo cookies. So far I have avoided the Oreos. It is getting close to that time of the month that I have a real need for chocolate so I drank a diet hot chocolate made with artificial sweetener that seemed to do the trick to tame my craving. Sweets in general do not appeal to me, but if I partake I'll want more and something better. Totally a set up for disaster.

Soda is the big one. Once I get off it, I'm fine, but as soon as I have just one, I have a million other sweet things as well. And cookies, especially the ones my mother-on-law makes. *sigh* Instead, I'll take them to work and foist them off on other people.

Triggers to avoid for me are: Social gatherings where sweets are plentiful, delivered right to my plate, or laid out upon a table before me where it's easy to reach out and load some on to my plate. I will take a protein bar to eat instead of the snack foods, and if I get tempted, I will find someone who feels like dancing with me (Or - I'll just dance all by myself - like no one is watching as the old saying goes.)

Triggers I am avoiding;

The car. I will not enter the car hungry.

The car. I will not eat in the car.

The car. If I start fantasizing about Kind Protein Plus bars when driving, I will sing Ave Maria (I only know that one line) at the top of my lungs, over and over until the fantasy goes away. (This worked very well re smoking in the car back when I was ditching that habit.)

To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.

The 3 triggers I'm going to avoid: ice cream, soda, and fruit juices.

Ice cream: Don't buy it. (seems simple)

Soda/sweet tea: Avoid work vending machines and gas station stops.

Fruit juices: Going to substitute whole fruit instead.

One day at a time.

My trigger is when my routine is disrupted. We were gone out of state for four days I tried to stay sugar free but it seemed almost impossible. I brought apples and oranges but an occasional peanut butter cookie found its way into my mouth. We drove home and never stopped to get something to eat I was so hungry when I got home I ate a sandwich but also some chocolate. If I eat my planned meals it seems I stay on track otherwise I just derail all my efforts. At least I know one trigger don't let myself get to hungry otherwise I'll eat anything.

The big triggers i need to avoid this week will be tough but I have a plan.

1. Soda and sugary food at gas station- I only have soda and these sugary treats when i go to the gas station and no where else.i'm going to start paying at the pump and making sure i have a water bottle in my car.
2. Break room treats- i notice on the weekends i really dont eat many sweets so my problems is linked to the readily available foods in break room at work. So this morning i put a bag of carrots with an organic spinach veggie dip and everytime i go in the breakroom to get water I treat myself with a carrot.

Good luck to everyone fighting their cravings this week!

I read the article about hidden sugars and posted my reaction

I guess this week is going to be more about avoiding the non-hidden sugars, like my dark chocolate with orange and see if I can keep those unopened for a bit longer.

No chocolate cake if we go out to eat at the buffet. I can make do with a small chocolate chip or an oatmeal cookie, which will cut out about 8 teaspoons of sugar according to the article I just read here on the challenge. I bought cereal that was NOT obviously full of sugar like plain Cheerios instead of Honey Nut, which I prefer. And I ate meat with no ketchup on it tonight. Will cut back on the ketchup but am not willing to go cold turkey on that yet.

I agree chocolate seems to be everywhere. I am not going to put sugar in my cereal or in my coffee like I usually do and I am going to eat more fruit when I need a sugar fix

My trigger seems to be boredom. We are retired and my husband is building a sports car, which means I am often in the house alone. We live quite a ways out in the country and this time of year there isn't a lot of outside things to keep me busy. I started doing cross stitch to keep my hands busy and of course I don't want food around my sewing to soil it. I get involved and don't want to quit - guess I'm substituting one habit for another.

My main trigger is chocolate and it seems its everywhere. This week I'm going to get rid of the chocolate in my house and stop buying it.

Candy dish at work is the big one - I am going to not put sugar on my oatmeal - those are the big ones for me. That candy dish at work is my nemesis.

Trigger is when I am near sugar like at a gas station or near register at grocery or dept store. I am going to pay at the pump from now on and always have water with me to quench thirst.

My biggest trigger seems to be whatever is visible or available. This can be challenging since I'm an assistant pastor at a church. It seems that sweets are around quite often. Many times I put them in a cupboard or the freezer to get them out of sight, and I purposely don't buy any to have at home. So I just started week 2, and it didn't start the greatest. Yesterday was my birthday so someone surprised me with a cake at our mid-week service to celebrate. On top of that, someone else brought some homemade cookies. I can't exactly be a party pooper & turn down cake and cookies on my birthday! And then of course, I had to have a piece of pie on Thanksgiving. On the upside, I have some of those cookies on my kitchen table and haven't yet touched them. I held out for pie instead and I'm limiting my sweets today to that one piece of pie.

I'm avoiding any homemade baking. I'm gluten and dairy free, so I tend to get excited by trying out new recipes that I can eat...but most are full of sugars(whether natural or not). I'm also going to avoid pre-made spaghetti sauces(and if needed, make my own).

Triggers I plan to avoid:
Well, right now (until Thanksgiving Day) I'm avoiding all sweets. Today is Day 12, I think. I've lost count! it's HARD. But really the hardest part is at the grocery store or Target. Once I'm home I'm okay.

On Thanksgiving, I'm going to have a piece of cheesecake that I'm making. All the leftovers will be distributed to others and WON'T be going home with me!

I like that phrase "situational candy eater." That fits me very well. I'm trying to avoid those offices at work where candy is always out. Sometimes I catch myself making excuses to visit. And making excuses for eating the candy - it's just a "fun size" etc. This week, I'm going back to my mantra-in-the-face-of-sweets -- "I don't eat that." Sounds simple but it seems to work wonders especially when I say it out loud for others to hear.

I usually can't resist ice cream but love to have it with pb sauce and nuts or choc chips. If I bought a box of ice cream sandwiches - I would eat the WHOLE box within 2-3 days! Soooo I DON'T buy them! I try to keep bad stuff out

If I eat too much fruit especially dried fruit, it can be a trigger.
I got an "ice cream" last night that is made with whey and only has 150 calories for the whole pint. I had decided to eat the whole pint but then decided to eat less and put a tsp of chocolate sauce and a few walnuts on it to make a sundae.
It did not trigger me like ice cream does. I was happy about that.
My motivation is back. For the last few days, I have had cravings non stop so it had been hard.
Maybe it was the time change and weather changes. Who knows, but when they come I have to be very careful not to plow back into my sugar addiction.

I used to have massive sugar triggers and have been on and off the get-off-sugar-train for years, but honestly I have fewer and fewer actual triggers going on but more motivation than ever to not so much avoid sugar completely but reduce it a lot.

For one thing, recently, I've had a number of health scares that turned out not to be valid, but one thing that I do need to get a handle on is blood pressure.

I am doing well with this but until a conversation a few weeks ago with a member of my health care provider team, I never connected the dots between sugar consumption and my blood pressure. I was asking questions about BP and that was one of the topics that came up, that it did have an impact.

Since it can have an impact on so many areas of health, I am trying to get it down. I intend, though, to still have sugar in moderation at times.

But honestly, I don't have sugar triggers anymore. I guess I just wasn't tracking it enough, but now I am and seeing more ways to cut back.

Moving in new directions.

Primarily baked sweets. I seem to be OK stopping ice cream at just one serving, even pudding dishes. Fruit is something I can control. Cookies, cakes, baked desserts like pies and cobblers are all triggers.
My goal is to not have the triggers for now....but ultimately I would love to be able to have a bit, and then s t o p .

If this was your last day, how would you spend it?

I am definitely a situational candy eater. Last week, I avoided the Halloween candy all day at work because I knew I was going to my book club later that evening and there would be sweets. I opted for the homemade pear cobbler at book club over the candy. (But later that week, I didn't manage to avoid the candy quite as easily.)

I brush my teeth right after lunch and that helps me say no to candy.

I started off week one with cutting out soda all together. I managed to go without it for two years, and then went back in the last six months due to stress, etc. I am also trying to cut out sweets, as I have a bad habit of buying candy as part of my lunch at work. I managed pretty well and then bought a bunch last night. Now I am going to work on portions and not substituting sugary juice for soda. Baby steps.

With the start of week 2, I plan to reduce sugars in:

Coffee - In addition to the caffeine pick me up, I usually add a flavored syrup or creamer. I don't dislike the taste of coffee sans-flavor addition, so I just need to let go of the "treat" aspect of my daily coffee and grab the plain, non-fat milk to add to my cup.

Treats - I already made good strides in week 1 to reduce treats. I didn't manage to cut them out entirely, but i did a better job of managing portions. Now I need to cut out portions.

Brown Sugar on my oatmeal - My day starts off with plain oatmeal...topped with brown sugar. Starting the day with two little kids, I barely have time to taste my breakfast anyway...giving up the extra empty calories at breakfast should be an easy way to kick-start the day.

Usually I turn to unhealthy treats when I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Still working on finding ways to manage those triggers, but in the mean time, hopefully I can keep reaching for healthier snacks when feeling the need to nosh.

My plan is to avoid pop - Pepsi mainly. It is my biggest downfall and something I have a VERY hard time saying no to. It is even worse when co-workers do something 'nice' and buy one for me and plop it on my desk during a stressfull afternoon. Stress is a big trigger for me, it knocks my cravings up superfold. Cereal is also another big one. I eat it as a snack and as cereal with milk.

I've learned that sugar is hiding in A LOT of things so I'm going to focus more on fruit - I love it anyone and tis the season. So the triggers I will try and avoid is the super stress, boredom and eating because I think I'm hungry. I have to learn to say NO to my co-workers.. .. or yes and just hide the pop and keep a stock pile for when I do go back to sugar and allow myself one once in awhile.

Love the plan... emoticon emoticon

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

I'm definitely a stress eater and more often than not I reach for something sweet to soothe myself when I'm stressed out.

This week my plan is to switch up what I'm reaching for in those situations by having fruit on hand with me at work (which is most often where I find myself to be stressed).

I'm also going to change up my coffee habits. I love Hazelnut Iced Coffee and usually need my coffee fix in the morning. Instead of heading to McD's for Iced Coffee I'm going to buy the International Delight Light Coffee with no flavoring (60-80 calories) and add my own sugar free hazelnut to it.

I don't keep cash/change on me at all so the work vending machines aren't a temptation for me, but I'm going to steer clear of the lunch room at work because people are always dropping off goodies there. This morning there were chocolate chip cookies - which I decided didn't look appetizing so I didn't have a problem passing them up (they were hard and crunchy - store brand cookies). Might have been a different scenario if they had been the fresh baked, soft, gooey kind - thankfully they weren't.

3 simple things to avoid for this week.

The Scale WILL NOT tell you the following:
- What a great person you are.
- How much your family & friends love you.
- That you can make a stranger melt with your beautiful
smile.
- You have the power to choose happiness.
