Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? I only shop there and Whole Foods because they don't seem to do that kind of stuff. They have baked goods there of course, but I think they are usually not by the produce.

The primary grocery store I shop at has the produce, then the deli, then the bakery items (this is how you encounter them if you turn right and go around the perimeter). So it would be possible to just get fresh produce without encountering a pie, but you couldn't get from produce to meats or dairy without passing the baked goods!

I go in a lot of other grocery store during my volunteer time for our food bank, and I know many are set up differently - even within the same chain (e.g. Kroger). If you don't have the option to go to another store, try writing a letter to the manager and ask the to consider re-arranging.

As far as candy at the checkout - many grocery stores in my area will have 1 aisle that is the "no candy" aisle.

None of my stores has the cake or pies next to the fresh produce. But grocery stores do want to sale so every store is set up to make the most of whatever they can. I know almost every store has candy bars at the exit out. That should be outlawed especially with are kids getting fatter and getting more diabetes. It's hard enough to say no then your just standing there staring at all that candy waiting your turn in line.

So very true...Marketing has a lot to do with how the store is laid out. A lot of money has gone into conditioning our association between certain foods to how they make you feel. Start your own internal marketing..when you look at a food ask yourself, will this help you reach your goal(s). If the answer is NO, then let it go. I know it's easier said than done, but YOU CAN DO IT. The more I work to create my healthy lifestyle, the more I find this is not just a cliche...A second on the lips, a lifetime on the hips. Hang in there! The more successes you have the easier it get.

Aciceda- I have 4 kids aged 16 to 6. I buy them a pack of soda or gatorade every month and some sort of "junk food" every 2 weeks. Each has their own and they keep iit in their rooms. If they slam through it all in a day, then that's their choice but they're stuck with water the rest of the month. Three of the 4 can make it last quite a while but my teenage son has yet to make the connection. Of course h'e 14, almost 5' 11" and 150lbs so he's always eating.

I never realized how lucky I am that my grocery store has the produce section right inside the front door. The bakery is at the back, easily avoided. Hmmm. I think I'll send a little thank you note to the store manager.

Love the idea of weekly rations. I don't have kids yet (hopefully soon) but I am thinking of employing that strategy for myself. That may help me cut out even more of the junk food as I've had a bad week and a half in that area. I definitely would try other stores as well. A lot of them due have the bakery up front (or some type of baked foods deli) but I know of a couple of stores where they have produce up there surrounding those baked goods so much I don't tend to see them. How is this possible, I think about the fruits that I like (pineapple!!!, watermelon!!!) and tend to focus on those immediately vice the baked pies and other goodies.

I'm interested to see what other people do for their kids since it's been a while since I was one and well...I am hoping to have mine here in the next couple of years :)

Yup,
Know what you mean. I am getting more adept at looking for the fruit and ignoring the call of the wild - sugar, that is.

Never go into a grocery store when you are hungry is one lesson I have learned.

It is marketing. Don't take it personally. My kids know that we have a list and coupons and we stick to the list. I also make a point to buy some more kid friendly items like flavored yogurt and trail mix. If they act up, they don't get their weekly ration.

Two suggestions. I belong to a veggie/fruit co=op. Check and see if there is one in your area. Try the farmer's market this time of year. Or do you have Aldi?
I hate the bread smell and all the yummy options! I don't think Publix has their veggies and fruit near the deli. Try another store. Good luck. I know that finding other options can be hard depending on your circumstances. But you can do this emoticon

It's true it is all about marketing. Try to shop the perimeter of the store and try to NEVER go hungry.

it's all about marketing... stores are carefully designed to make you buy more of the things you don't need

Why in the world do grocery stores have to put there delicious looking cakes and donuts and sweets in front of the fruits and veggies!!!!? I never really noticed until I started buying mostly fruits and veggies, but now every time I walk into the store that is what I see!! No wonder this country is becoming diabetic, obese and every other sweet related disease! You can't even walk to the veggies without seeing a delicious fresh baked pie, cake, bread, cupcake, and cookies. You walk past with your kids and they start screaming for cake and you have to keep on walking and hand them an apple!! Yes the apple is better but if the fresh baked goodies were in another part of the store then I wouldn't have to tell my child no every time I want to buy broccoli. Also it's not like the kids are the only ones screaming for the cake, so is my head!! I go to the veggie section almost every single day now because I've become a vegan and every day I have to explain to myself like I'm a child why buying the apples are better then that delicious looking berry pie!
I realize that stores probably make a lot of money by putting the bakery in front of the fruits and veggies but I don't really care!! To me that is the dumbest place in the world to put it because it causes arguements, tantrums (and I'm not just talking about the kids), and cravings I don't need to deal with every time I want to buy something healthy and good for my family!!!
