MUSUKUS - Now that you know how important it could be, I believe you WILL look at the labels, BEFORE you buy an item !

Oh, I do look at the ingredient labels, but mostly only when I already bought them... Really need to work on that.

I get the Chobani fruit-flavored yogurt, because it doesn't have any added sugar. And I hear you about pasta sauce, but there are brand that have no high-fructose corn syrup in them. In fact, since my hubby is Type II I now thoroughly check labels for the HFCS! You should also check breads and cereals, if you eat them. I gave up my fave bread, Mrs. Baird's, in exchange for Nature's Own because of HFCS, and by Kashi Go-Lean cereal, which is also HFCS-free.
Still, I'd like to make my own pasta sauce, AND tomato soup - you know how much sugar is in Campbell's tomato soup??? Such a BUMMER!!!

Reading labels sure is an eye-opener ! Thank goodness, laws were passed, stipulating that there be full disclosure, about all the ingredients !

I've really been working on reading labels when grocery shopping. It is amazing how many things have sugar in the ingredient list!

I was appalled at the number of things that have added sugar to it. It pays to make our own from scratch!

I am so proud of you!! Baby steps are much better than NO steps. I, too, have had to make many changes in my eating habits. I try not to totally deprive myself from sweets, as I will binge. I keep dark chocolate (not my fave) in the house as a treat for being good all day. So far, that seems to work. BTW...I love the kitty!

I like my plain greek yogurt with an orange, 1/4 cup of chopped almonds and cinnamon blended in my food processor then topped with 1/2 cup of fiber one. That's breakfast for me!

So, I make my own yogurt from plain skim milk yogurt...ingredients listed on the side of the yogurt contatiner say that there are no added sugars - but how can I be sure? I use skim milk powder or skim milk as the base without adding any fruit unless I add fresh fruit later. Am I on track? Anyone know?

I love cooking my own sauces too! I think it's disgusting how much sugar goes into commercially prepared EVERYTHING ... ... why is that even necessary?
Oh well ... everyone seems to like MY home-made stuff just as much if not more ... me too ... so that's a good thing ...

Thick Greek yogurt with a dash of vanilla essence is really lovely too.

Flavored yogurt is to be avoided, but remember that plain yogurt has naturally occurring sugars in them, and that's OK. Plain greek yogurt blended with some cocoa powder and a frozen ripe banana is pretty yummy!
And when I figured out the amounts of sugar in spaghetti sauce, I was pretty mad! But then I learned to make my own, and what I make at home is cheaper and more flavorful. I make a big batch and freeze portions.

Week two we're supposed to cut back on 3 sugary things we eat. For me, the big one is SODA, but I had to find a couple others, and was having trouble thinking of any, but then I did that quiz about hidden sources, and two big ones popped out: Yogurt and spaghetti sauce! I eat yogurt for breakfast a couple times a week, if I'm being really good, I buy the unsweetened nonfat kind and add fresh fruit to it, but this past week they had the sweetened stuff on sale (I'm a sucker for bargains, that's another thing I have to work on haha.) So, that goes. And I eat pasta at least once a week, and hadn't really thought about there being sugar in the spaghetti sauce (again, one of those bargains.) Ugh. Next time I'm going to buy fresh tomatoes and tomato paste and make my own healthy sauce. Oh and the BBQ sauce too! Thankfully I don't eat BBQ very often, but next time I do one of those summertime grill ups, I'll make my own sugar-free BBQ sauce.
As for the soda, I've cut down some this week, but haven't gone off it completely. But really, even one can in a day is more sugar than I'm supposed to eat for the whole day! I figured in the past if I just allocated the calories for it, I could indulge in one measly can. But I have to change my thinking and remember that food is energy, not a reward or comfort or all those things I use it for.
Ah well, baby steps, little by little, awareness is the first step to action.
