I have weird feet, hard to fit feet, and I wear size 10.5 which almost no one makes. I buy almost all my shoes online at Zappos.com. They have free shipping AND returns. It's like having your own shoe store! I usually order two sizes and if one fits and I like it, I keep it; if not they both go back. They have sales, too. My favorite brand is Crocs because they're so well cushioned. There's an article on SP (linked from a walking team, I think) about which shoes to wear for walking and running. If I really truly get into walking I'll try some of the recommended brands. I'd rather buy used clothes cheap and spend extra on good shoes, because if my feet get sore--and they will--I can't do much at all!

To Teenysmom - I used to work in a sports' shoe store. We were trained to fit clients based on observing their gait. Some clients came to us with a written prescription from their orthopaedist (foot doctor).

What you describe is called "pronation." For your shoe needs, you need special fitting. There's almost no way of getting around that extra cost.

Your least expensive option may be to go to a sports shoe store where they know how to fit your feet for ORTHOTICS (custom arch supports), and where they sell a variety of shoe types (and external orthotics) designed to help stabilize your feet and ankles.

Meanwhile, here's an article from the American Orthpaedic Foot and Ankle Society- AOFAS-

"How to Select the Right Athletic Shoes."

twear/Pages/Selecting-Athletic-Shoes.aspx

Doing what you must do to stay healthy and avoid injury sometimes is not compatible with the cheapest cost!

We can't try to "GO CHEAP" for everything, all the time!!

Good luck. Stay healthy.

I bought shoes yesterday. I wear sneakers all the time. I'm on disability so I have little reason to dress up. I got them at Payless. I also can find good quality name workout shoes at department stores with a little searching. I got my other pair at a department store last year at less than half price. It's not waiting for a clearance.

I don't have a car so I take the bus. I visit my local mall and two strip malls and find the best prices and quality. Last night, I only went to the mall. Still, if you don't have much time, it only takes about half an hour to compare prices at one mall and one shopping center. All one needs is luck and a little patience.

When you look online under "good, cheap walking shoes" you find several sites that list their prices. Of course, I wouldn't buy them online because I think I need to try them on and test them out around the store, first. BUT if you already know which ones you're going to buy, I guess it would be ok to get them online. I even went to the websites for some of those mall shoe stores, as well as the main sites for several brands I could think of. Many offered very good sales with shoes for very low prices ($29-49). If I knew what size and brand to buy, I would have ordered them this weekend when I saw those amazing prices. I couldn't care less what color they are, and that's why some of the prices were so low. Or they were low because they're last season's model...like I care! I don't need to have the newest and most fashionable shoe at this stage of my journey.

Maybe you can find some great prices this way too!

Hi guys,

Does anyone know how? where? I can get a pair of gym shoes which keep my feet & ankles from turning outward? The shoes that I have found are VERY expensive.

A lot depends on where you live. In some areas you can find outlet stores. I sometimes buy my shoes when visiting out of town.

Otherwise, I try and watch for sales and buy my workout shoes before I need them. My feet aren't growing, so they will still fit when I need them.

I find that they often go on sale around this time of year... I think it has something to do with kids going back to school. I generally do better at low end department stores than at shoe stores. They will have name brand shoes at about 50% off.

Well, before I could afford a new pair, I bought really nice inserts for the older, cheaper pair I had. Now it's time for me to get a pair (I went out this weekend but couldn't find anyone at the sports store to help!) and beforehand, I searched online to get 3 or 4 names of good shoes for people my weight.

Just wanted to check with others about my concern over crazy, rising prices of fitness shoes.

Personally, I DO NOT want to be trying to pay over $100 for workout shoes.

How are YOU dealing with this? Thanks in advance!!!!
