I hit 900---guess with the wedding and then being home and the basketball games interfering with some water aerobics, I did okay---did not reach my goal of 1000 though.

I did get the 30 minutes today--and then ate a Panera cinnamon roll--wasn't that good--should have just left part of it but I can't. So I need to really put in some time tomorrow! (Cause going out to eat tonight....)

I'll hit the 1500 tomorrow!

815 but FitBit says I have done a lot more---hope to at least get to 900---looks like I won't hit my 1000 because of the snow and the wedding---but hit 10000 steps today!

1438 for January thus far. I will get to the gym tomorrow and Thursday--30 minutes tomorrow and 60 on Thursday so that will hit my 1500 minutes.

February will be a lower goal--we'll be skiing but that isn't always at "work out" levels!

I'm reporting my time for my mom's food pantry--and have over 5 hours of exercise this week! Not too bad for an "old lady"! I was talking to a friend and I cannot believe she is 60 and I am 56. How come my brain doesn't think I am that old? The hair does--LOL but the body is not looking like 56 either....

My dad is 79 and he said he can't believe that either. So I guess we always think we are younger.....

Carol, as much as my body ached last night, I must have been active enough yesterday to have some of them counted. But I am still just going to count what I call "real" exercise---otherwise, have to be doing some aerobic for 10 minutes. But I am enjoying the extra points here on Spark---means I have tons more points for goodies---although I already have a ton of them anyhow.

WOO HOO Dianne and THREE hours this week!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

And don't mean to KEEP talking about the FitBit thing but I am almost POSITIVE now that it counts only AEROBIC activity towards the MINUTES credit it gives us on here... It counts ALL steps -- but the MINUTES I think it records are ONLY the "aerobic" ones...

See, the other day I went out with the dog -- we were out for about 45 minutes -- BUT we "wandered" alot -- as well as actual WALKING -- but we definitely weren't doing "aerobic" walking for that entire time...!! SO I decided to quickly sync my FitBit to SEE what it was giving me in exercise minute credit... It had down only 27 minutes -- but my STEP count was pretty high for that point in my day -- like close to 4500 I believe (this was probably about 11 a.m. I think)....

Anyway -- given what I had done that day (which was all just "general" walking UNTIL the dog and I went out) -- I felt that time was really "on" for what I'd think was ACTUAL "exercise" time.... And you're RIGHT Cathy about the bars and the COLOR of the bars on FitBit.com -- as well as the HEIGHT of them.... So it DOES definitely record your activity in different ways.... It's funny because just prior to reading your post about those bars, that SAME thought had occurred to ME!!

485 exercise minutes after water aerobics today.
Carol, good info---I did clip it once to my bra but up on the strap, not the middle, but cannot remember how it did---I wore it to church since the dress had no pocket. I went to Fitbit site and like what they show on there---it is a graph that shows different colors and thought that was interesting and like you said, some are for more aerobic info and others just movement---but I still dont' think it is fair to count those points here on Spark---LOL---and for this challenge I am trying to get in more exercise so think I will go by my actual activities---but I know the extra steps are helping---and the FitBit doesn't work in the pool---sigh! Thanks for the insite and I will check it out after the wedding to see how it goes.

Cathy -- just thought I'd share some further "investigating" I've done with my FitBit and trying to sync then analyze the info... This MAY not "apply" since yours is a different model -- but maybe after the wedding you'll want to try and see what you find with yours...

I am starting to think that MAYBE my FitBit DOES differentiate between aerobic (or at least "exercise") steps and not... I have several days where when I've looked back, I'll have similar NUMBER of steps yet it will give me DIFFERENT minute credits... Almost like it's deciding WHICH are "true" exercise minutes/steps and which are not... I'm not sure how else I can explain the difference in the minutes it records...

Here's a for instance... One day I synced part way through the morning -- I think I had gone around 3,000 steps and it gave me like 40 minutes of credit (which seemed about right to me because I had walked for about a half hour -- as my "activity" that day -- then also taken the dog out where I thought I had gotten about 10 minutes of "good" walking in although we were out walking longer than that)... BUT on another day when I synced and had about 3,000 steps, it only gave me like 27 minutes of credit -- which again I felt was probably about right for the part of the recorded steps that would have been more "active" at that point in my day...

SO -- I was wondering if it was kind of doing what my Omron pedometer used to do - without spelling it all out as "aerobic vs. non-aerobic" steps -- like giving me exercise minute credit when I had been walking for more than 10 minutes in a row or some such.....?? I don't know how else to explain the time credit difference when the NUMBER of steps has almost been the same but the ACTIVITY with those steps hasn't been the same...

Who knows... Just thought that was interesting when I started paying closer attention... I'm definitely not seeing where I'm potentially getting "double credit" or whatever issue was being discussed on Spark... How were people getting that impression or realizing there was a potential issue?? What were they/you seeing?? So far it seems like as long as I don't record my "exercise" walks, or the walks with the dog, separately -- as long as I JUST sync the FitBit -- then I'm pretty accurate with my counts...

The other thing I wanted to comment on was how AWESOME you are doing with getting SO many steps in with the FitBit!!! And don't "downplay" hitting 10,000 steps -- but not all of them being "aerobic"!! When they recommend getting 10,000 steps a day, they are NOT anticipating ALL of those are going to be "aerobic" -- just GETTING that many steps in on any given day makes you fall into the "active" category (vs. sedentary)!! Sure, walking from the sink to the table may not be "aerobic" -- BUT you're still MOVING and getting that many steps in over the course of a day is GREAT -- aerobic or not!!!

I DID try to wear my FitBit on my bra the other day (had pants on with no pockets which is RARE for me but...!). Anyway -- I don't think it was very accurate... Not only did it NOT count my steps TWICE since I had two boobs bouncing around, BUT I think it was just missing some of them all together!! In fact - I KNOW it was missing some because at one point during the day I looked at my FitBit and thought, "wow, that's kind of low for a step count given what time it is in the day"... So I clipped it back on my bra and walked from my kitchen out to the garage and back into the house -- looked at my FitBit again and it had only counted about 10 steps.... Trust me -- my garage is MORE than 10 steps away from our kitchen!!! Plus I had gone back and forth -- so it was NOT accurate...

Most of the time when I wear it on my pocket, I feel like it HAS been pretty accurate... ALTHOUGH one day I noticed it didn't count some steps -- but it had worked it's way over on my pocket edge -- more towards my waist than out towards my hips (I usually clip it over the edge of my pocket) -- so I'm thinking it wasn't sensing the "stepping" motion as much or something...

Anyway -- just some observations I've made....

Spark board says I'm at 610 -- so we'll go with that!

Cathy -- I DID try to "analyze" my FitBit the other day... I synced it at one point during the day and thought it was pretty accurate with the time it gave me -- as long as I don't log my dog walks separately myself... It had given me like 31 minutes "credit" at the time I logged on and synced it -- and I had just taken a walk with the dog for about 30 minutes....so it seemed good I thought... Checked one more time after that and thought it was pretty accurate again -- as LONG as I don't log other things also (except my PT exercises which I log under strength training)...

Dianne -- glad DD ordered the FitBit! Hope she likes it! I loved my Omron pedometer -- and probably would still be using it except Sam "borrowed" it and I haven't seen it since! LOL... I WANTED a FitBit when I got the Omron though anyway -- so just decided to go for it and get the FitBit!

DD2 ordered the $100 one. Carol--I have the Omron and while it is a bit big, I love the aerobic vs not. I have clipped it on pantyhose so it doesn't show too much--or if I have NO pocket. (I'm old fashioned and DO wear pantyhose!) I broke the clip for it however and have been improvising. I may order a fitbit clip to clip it on--I've almost lost it a couple times and the clip saved it. DD1 also has one--she got hers at least a year ago--maybe longer--and in part for the sleep analysis part.

Oh--I'm at 406 minutes so far this month....I WILL exceed my goal.

Yes, the Zip does do sleep, but I don't wear it to bed because of its size and no where to safely clip it that would not bother me. But that is personal choice. I think the One comes with a velcro arm band but not sure about the clip.

I THINK the FitBit I have is called a FitBit Ultra -- it's long and clips directly on my pocket (it's long and black but not like the new one they have out now)... It's the one that they discontinued... I was able to get it for like $75 off Amazon -- which is why I "jumped on it" when I saw that...

I had wanted one for a long time and when I noticed the one for that cheap on Amazon I decided to go for it. Otherwise I hadn't seen the prices vary too much -- I was seeing what Cathy listed...

It DOES sync here on Spark... The thing I like the BEST about it is how small it is -- I HAD been using a pedometer -- an Omron brand one that I really liked. It worked well just sitting in my pocket -- BUT it was big and bulky in my opinion - got tired of it being in my pocket BUT the FitBit is hardly noticeable -- MUCH better that way!

The only thing I MISS is something that Cathy touched on earlier in this thread -- the pedometer actually used to separate "aerobic steps" from OTHER steps which the FitBit does NOT do... But personally I think the convenience of the FitBit -- along with the fact that it syncs with Spark -- is worth giving that feature up!

One thing I'm not sure of is if the Zip will "analyze" your sleep or not -- but Cathy might be able to tell you that... IF your DD would be interested in that, then you MIGHT have to go with the more expensive one to get that feature...

I'm a LITTLE bit confused about whether or not the new ones have a BUILT IN "clip" or not... It APPEARS on their website that you have to buy the FitBit unit and THEN also buy a "case/clip"...so even the one that's long and black that looks similar to mine must be different where it doesn't clip right on by itself...?? But I'm not certain...

You and/or DD can check them out on their website -- it's www.fitbit.com

I have the Zip---very small and does not do as much as the One---the Zip runs about 55-60 and the One runs about 100. Check it out on their website ---but they have great customer service---if you have issues or even lose it, they replace it. One is longer and skinnier but I do like the rubber shell on the Zip and the way it fastens on to stuff---and seems to work just as well on my pocket or just loose in it----and they also suggest wearing it clipped to your sports bra.

My DD2 wants to get a fitbit--turns out DD1 has one as well. Best place? Best price? Which one do you recommend? She'd like it to connect with Spark.

Carol, maybe when you synced yours it did not do that---but those walks with the dog are good exercise minutes. But mine at school are short bursts going from class to class, or if I run an errand----I do like to count the steps as mileage for various challenges ---like we have a virtual walk going on the Gardening Team---but since they are not in 10 minute increments I don't see them as "real" exercise. And there might be a way not to add them in that I don't know how to do---LOL.
One thing I think I will report on here is my steps--yesterday I finally hit 10000 steps because of my walk---and then hit 15000 before the end of the day---but I had to get up and do some stuff when we got home from errands as I was a bit short---I wanted to hit that mark so the fitbit is a good motivator to get moving. We all know the more we move, the more calories we burn.

Cathy -- do you know if ALL the "models" of Fit Bit add minutes?? I haven't noticed mine doing that -- just recording my steps... I may have to watch that. ALTHOUGH I don't think my minutes are "inflated" -- will have to go through it a bit and analyze...

I do my PT exercises every day (for the most part) -- and since those are basically strength training (triceps, biceps, shoulders, toe touches, hamstring stretches etc) I record those -- which amounts to about 30 minutes I think -- forget the exact number that shows up when I record them on my Fitness thing here on Spark.

Then I record SOME of the walks I do with the dog -- if we go at a good pace for a decent amount of time. Usually I walk with her at least 3 times a day for 20-30 minutes each time but end up recording about 40 minutes as "aerobic"...

SO that would end up being about 70 minutes/day -- give or take -- and since I received my 250 "trophy" yesterday (4th day of the month) that's probably about right -- 4 x 70 = 280 minutes

Guess I didn't really think my FitBit was throwing off my "numbers"...wonder if my "model" doesn't add on to the minutes???

311 exercise minutes--did a 25 minute power walk (1.42 miles) and then cooled off for another 5 while picking up sticks in the yard. And did the hour class this AM--lots of inner and outer thigh work.

If I went by FitBit I would be at over 500 minutes---but not counting that---but will count my walking minutes today.

Did 41 minutes today. Plan on 1 hour, 15 minutes tomorrow at the gym and then maybe an afternoon class--we'll see.

Wish I could count packing bins---LOL---but know my Fitbit is---but I am not going to count that as my "real" exercise minutes---but I am definitely more active today---plan on water aerobics tomorrow night.

26 minutes done so far! I want to get some strength training in as well. I will be watching the Rose Bowl (at least the first part) and plan to do some upper body work--biceps, triceps, chest and back.

Did another 10 minutes of ST--push ups and "around the world" biceps. Still need to do some triceps--I'd love to get rid of the "bat wings".

Great for both of you---and anyone who wants to set a lower number for themselves, that is good, too---as we all know what we have done in the past---just set it a tad higher so you have a goal to work towards.

OKAY, time to get our butts in gear and get some minutes towards our goals. And since we all are more motivated in January, how about 1000 minutes as your goal for the month? Hope to see more of us participating this month! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
