Somehow I missed this thread and just ran across it, wow! I new nothing about Bally's being taken over. Interesting discussion here, I've been wanting to join a gym for some time. I work down town and live just 2 miles away so I don't drive. Also I've never heard of Crunch but I'm going to check out the one in Garden Home. From your reports it sounds like a good place.

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who responded in this thread. I'm already feeling the effects of gym withdrawals and am eagerly awaiting the opening of Boom Fitness on January 9th. I think that it will become my new home.
With the kids home for break it's going to be hard to work out but I'm going to do my best. Thanks again for the support/recommendations in finding a new gym!!

I was surprised to find out this morning that when our auto payment went through on Nov. 15 to Ballys that it paid for our LA Fitness membership through January 14.

When I cancelled our membership today online at LAFitness.com so that our next auto payment wouldn't go through on Dec. 15, I figured we could only go to LA Fitness through either Dec. 14 (end of our Bally's payment cycle) or Dec. 31 (end of the free trial offered by LA Fitness). But instead we have through January 14 to use LA Fitness.

Guess Bally's was actually having us pre-pay not 1 but 2 mos in advance. Because our last payment was Nov. 15 and our Dec. 15 either won't go through or if it does will be refunded.

So for those of you concerned about what to do and your normal payment date to Ballys is coming up, you may get another 1/2 or full month at LA Fitness if you decide to cancel.

For us we're going with Crunch. I visited it yesterday and REALLY like it.

Sorry you all are having a hard time finding a new place that you like. I like LA Fitness personaly. We have had a influx of people with Ballys closeing and it's been an adjustment for all of us. I told my husband to expect it to be a 'zoo' for the next 2 months. By Febuary it should be back to normal.

We don't have young children so the child care thing isn't so important to us. I do like that LA has a swimming pool, that was important to me.

I've taken the Shred N Tread class and it is excellent. My personal trainer experience was awesome at the Gresham Crunch too.

I researched the Crunch - Gresham and I'm starting to change my tune about it.

I'm becoming very interested in it because of price ($10/mo), month to month no contract membership, and most especially because of the classes. I'm not normally a class person but after hearing people here, Yelp, CitySearch, etc. say their classes are good I checked out the class schedule.

Wow - for the first time in 10 years the class descriptions really excite me. And good times. Since there's no child care my husband and I would go different times. The 6:00 am Tread N Shed class looks great. Intervals and walking on the treadmill - love the sound of that.

And this place is just 3 blocks from our house so our one car family wouldn't be impacted.

Guess I'm suggesting that you all give Crunch a try as I wasn't very interested in it. Plan to visit it tomorrow and use a guest pass to take the Tread N Shred class on Monday.

I stopped into the Bally's in Aloha in search for information for you. They are not closing but did say they were bought out by LA Fitness. The desk clerk did suggest that the LA Fitness in Tannisbourne will be the new home gym for the members who were at the Hillsboro gym. The Bally's in Aloha has child care/

Melissa,
I've read some bad reviews on the Hillsboro location that I was forced to join. This was all prior to the Bally takeover. Lots of complaints about the friendliness of the front desk, and as with any business, typically these people are your best foot forward. With so many people complaining about just the front desk, it sure makes you re-think the facility overall. So far, I'm unimpressed with the time and class offerings. None of them fit into my schedule. Plus, the childcare is more expensive than my gym fees (I have two kids). The layout is so poorly done that I'm shocked at some of the placement of things. For instance, the pool is right next to the front desk check in, with large picture windows, so everyone coming in can see anyone in the pool. I went to one fitness class thus far (a pilates class) and the instructor said during the pilates 100 that "neck strain is completely normal." I've done pilates and neck strain is never normal and no one should be saying it's okay let alone the instructor. There was also no instruction on proper form and I ended up hurting my low back doing some of the moves. While I won't base all classes on one instructor, I certainly wouldn't take any more of her classes.
So, LA not looking too good, but will trial the others and will post here.

Thank you for all your responses! This is the worst time of year to be without a gym and I feel like I'm desperately scrambling for an answer, when really, I need to take my time and find a gym I can be in a long term relationship with.
I'm mostly upset about leaving my instructors and friends (it's hard to start at a new "school"). I think I'm going to try them all and see where I land. If you know of any hole-in-the-wall gyms in Hillsboro, please let me know. I did a google search, but most results were big box gyms.
Thanks!! Happy Holidays!!

Just came back from visiting LA Fitness in Gresham with my husband and kids and it was a HORRIBLE experience. Kids Club allowed to reach 19 kids with 1 staff person. Gym member so concerned about the safety she brought it to 3 staff members attention and all just shrugged their shoulders. We followed her back in (she pulled her kid and left without working out) and when I shared my concern 2 staff members just shrugged their shoulders. I pointed out that they could turn children away and they said nothing.

Got 2 different price quotes on Kids Club from 2 staff members.

Our 'exact membership monthly fee' is actually 8% higher.

To get our 30 day trial membership we had to sign that we read the agreement AND got a copy (makes sense) but they did not have a copy of the agreement for us to read nor a copy to take with us.

Some 10 Ballys members waiting for info that the didn't have, 1 computer crashing and regular LA Fitness members were waived past the check-in because the front desk staff had lost all control.

As we discussed on the way to the car, this place is imploding now with all the Ballys members showing up. Just think of what it will be like in 2 weeks when the New Years folks show up asking to join.

We are not going with this place. May sign my husband up for Crunch - Gresham for a 6 mos and re-check LA Fitness - Gresham in June.

Hey you all. I am a former LA Fitness group instructor, belong to Gresham Crunch, and now teach at 24 hour. IF considering LA fitness-nice gym, most people friendly, if you like group classes the instructors are required to use the music the gym provides (power music) which is not original artists, class formats are good though. Crunch is my favorite place-low key, comfortable, members are friendly and the classes are great (this instructors picky viewpoint). 24 hour is also a pretty good place (I have belonged there since 1991 when it was Gold's). so what I would say is to get a guest pass to each club that is close to you and go with where you feel most comfortable(and that that it sucks Bally's locations are closing). Good luck to you all!!!

We're near Gresham and my husband is very upset that Bally's closed. It is just 3 blocks from our house and my husband really liked it there. Crunch is also 3 blocks away, but without childcare it's not a good choice for us. And I understand it doesn't have a sauna which my husband wants. We plan to look at LA Fitness but.... it will require us to drive there and we only have 1 car making it difficult. So we're in a similar situation - not sure what to do.

I don't know if this will be of any help to you, but I belong to Crunch. It is a very inexpensive gym that doesn't necessarily carry contracts. You can belong month to month at very reasonable rates. They do not offer child care at this time, but the money that you save on membership fees might make the child care fees more affordable. They offer personal trainers for reasonable rates and a whole range of classes that are free with your membership. They even have tanning booths. I feel very cosy at my gym in Gresham. They have another one on the west side of town in Beaverton, which may still be too far away for you in Hillsboro, since it is in the Garden Home area. It is a great gym though. emoticon Deb

Ah gosh Winklepots, so sorry to hear your gym is closing.

I'm in NE Portland, and belong to Giant's Gym. It's on Sandy, and I'm guessing, far too far away from where you live.

I hope you'll have better luck finding a new place to call 'home'. I'm very fond of my gym and inhabitants as well.

Have you tried 24Hour Fitness in Hillsboro? They have child-care. Great club, plus there are 3 more within a 5 mile radius.

I had a little different reaction and experience to the take over as I was not happy at my Bally's and LA Fitness was one that I was looking at switching to. I called the day I found out and spoke with someone at the LA Fitness that would become my new home and they were very helpful and answered all of my questions. I don't have childcare on my membership, but I do pay annually and my annual membership will not expire until October 2012 and they said they would honor it so we'll see.

I can see how you could be upset by this though. I was not particularly attached to any of the instructors or members but if I were it would be different.

As for other gyms I liked 24 hour fitness when I was a member years ago.

So, I'm one of the displaced former Ballys members (my home club in Hillsboro is one that will be closed on 12/8). I'm just wondering how many of you are going on to LA Fitness or canceling and joining another gym? If so, which gym?
I'm trying to weigh my options and I'm curious where your new home will be.
I'm still a bit peeved with Fitness International as they won't honor the child care portion of my membership (and the way they've handled this hostile takeover) and I'm not lovin' the idea of leaving my "family" at Ballys. To me, it was more than a gym. I loved my instructors and had friends in my classes that I looked forward to working out and spending time with. I feel unwelcome and like a stranger in such a large facility like LA where it seems like you just go and "get it done" then head home.
Any suggestions on new gyms would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
