I can't live without natural peanut butter, apples, brown rice. sweet potatoes, tilapia, chicken breasts, vegetables for roasting, coconut oil, sweet potatoes, low fat cottage cheese and lean steak! I also try to have ingredients for a hearty soup on hand and lots of frozen veggies.
I buy most of the staples weekly, but I stop at a market almost daily for one thing or another. It is either fresh meat (they have a butcher), or fresh veggies/fruit. The store is small and only 4 or 5 miles from my house and on the way to everywhere.

I buy my tilapia already frozen and I truly find it doesn't make a difference it taste, so that can stay in the freezer for quite some time and I have fish at my disposal without a weekly grocery shop. A new fave of mine is avocado. I love the creaminess of it, it's quite a treat!
I find that if you can get fresh produce from a farmers market it lasts longer. I also make menu's so I can guess how much food I will need. I tend to go weekly, and may go two weeks before going. I have a large family to feed and they can easily clear out my fruit supply or milk. Sometimes I go shopping just for milk, or specific items. I don't complain. It is the big shopping trips that take me forever! I rarely have produce that spoils. I am the salad eater and my kids love fruit. Just last night I snuck mushrooms and onions in their dinner and they didn't even notice! My must haves: Oatmeal, flour to make bread and pizza dough. and I stock up on pasta and rice. The hard part is finding freezer easy food. I tend to freeze leftovers or soup.

Sorry - I go weekly as well. For me, I just like the fact of fresh fruit and veggies. I make out the weekly menu on Sunday and then hit the grocery store on Monday. I have found that by doing this we waste less food and the kids eat healthy snacks as well.
