Spices (mutmeg, cinnamon), seeds and nuts, and berries make them more interesting. I also like slicing a banana in or adding grated apple into the porridge when I make it.

I sometimes mix my dry oatmeal with unsweetened applesauce (carb)! It is so good, I sometimes add a banana!

I know this post is way super old, but I wanted to weigh in...
I add fresh strawberries to mine. I cup up about 4 strawberries for a 1/2 cup (dry) oatmeal. Prepare the oatmeal, mix in strawberries. I also like a little cinnamon in there as well. If it's not sweet enough, and it's not for me, I add 1-2 tablespoons of honey.

The "Irish oats" are very good, too.
Say, another cool thing to do with oats is to cook oat groats with blackeye peas, adding some chopped carrots, celery and onions. Makes a great soup.
Blackeyes have more fiber than just about any other bean, are high in folic acid, low in sodium.

I eat steel cut oats everyday. After I cook them I add flax, cinnamon, vanilla and raisins....usually the golden variety. I make enough for a week and put them into individual containers. I then microwave one each morning with a little bit of almond milk. I think it's sweet and delicious. In the summer I sometimes skip the raisins and add fresh berries but I really prefer the raisins. I like the steel cut better than any other type of oats and it's the best kind of oats for you. Rolled oats, etc. are more processed. My cholesterol improved at an amazing rate in just 6 months! I hope this helps you.

I love oatmeal, but it does need a little bit of salt. I use the organic rolled oats when I can get them, otherwise the "old fashioned".
Sometimes I cook my oats in my home-made organic soy "milk" instead of water, and add ground flaxseed after they are done.
sometimes I cook raisins with them, or add fresh or frozen fruit after cooking.

i like the following 2 ways to prepare if you don't like the bland taste... 1) mush up an overripe banana into 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1tsp flaxseed and 1 tsp of chia seeds (or add more of either seed if you prefer) 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1 cup water, dash salt, 2 dashes cinnamon - and boil for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. take off heat, add 1/2 tsp of vanilla and let sit, covered for another 10 minutes. tastes just like banana bread!!
@2 use same oat/seed/liquid mixture but chop up small apple into oatmeal and add apple pie spice w/ the cinnamon - still add vanilla after off heat. if not sweet enough, add a little applesauce or stevia but i find it's ok.

Hi everyone,
Today I have begun the clean eating diet...have been reading a couple of books by Tosca Reno and it makes so much sense.
So today I made the plain oatmeal with wheat germ and flaxseed, which she advocates, and found it SO bland. Even after sprinkling some cinnamon on it, it didn't really help. I had to pour myself a glass of low-fat milk and took a swig of it after each bite. It's not that the oatmeal tasted bad. Rather, it was so bland and boring.
Anyone have any tips on how to make oatmeal taste better?
