I know that for me,
putting myself first means having to look in the places I do not want to look. and so I push the mirror away and focus on the things outside of myself, like kids, house, gossip, arguing with my husband over unimportant things, feeling badly about a slight or secret.
all these things keep me here in the same hole, making the same repeated behaviour that leads to nothing improving.
closet eating, which is what i do, focuses my attention on my stash, my stolen moments to indulge, and keeps my mind from wadering around places that are too important for me to consider about myself at this time.

Also wanted to add that to us,individually, the definition of "compulsive overeating" can mean different things to each of us. If our eating habits upset us and we continue to eat and eat and eat the same bad food choices, that can even be compulsive overeating to me. Just the whole loss of control and doing it anyway.

To me if I eat alot of cookies, etc., and even stay under my caloric intake limit for the day, that is still compulsive eating for me. I've used those cookies to mask boredom, an emotional upset, stress, etc. I have lost my willpower and only feel guilt afterwards as I've left myself down. That's my definition of compulsive snacking and I think everyone may have their own sort of definitions. And, Ms. Angelbeliever, we're so glad you're here to offer your support and friendship to the whole group!

After all this time I really don't think I am a compulsive eater. I've been reading all the posts, and info on the net, and what I am finding is that I sometimes will eat too many cookies, but I know what I am doing. Does this make any sense? I have never eaten large quantities of calories. So, do I still belong on this team? I'm not sure. I don't think so. So, what do I do? You are such a wonderful person. What can offer to the team? emoticon

I understand alot of this. I have changed my eating habits, but the voices in my head and my emotions still hold me back from doing the "right" things at times.

What is Compulsive Overeating?

Compulsive overeating is the excessive consumption of food (bingeing), often thousands of calories at a time. People with Compulsive Overeating have what is characterized as an "addiction" to food. They often use food and eating as a way to hide from their emotions, to fill a void they feel inside, and to cope with daily stresses and problems in their lives.

Bingeing is used as a release or response to negative situations. For this reason, it is often called "comfort eating", although compulsive overeating can be far more serious than this. Binge eating temporarily relieves the stress of these feelings, but is unfortunately followed by feelings of guilt, shame, disgust, and depression Binge eating, like Bulimia, often occurs in secret. Often times, Compulsive Overeaters eat normally or restrictively in front of others and then make up for eating less by bingeing in secret. Not every compulsive overeater binges by eating thousands of calories at a time. Some may eat foods all day long.

People with Compulsive Over Eating tend to be overweight, are usually aware that their eating habits are abnormal, but find little comfort because of society's tendency to stereotype the "overweight" individual.

Men and Women who are Compulsive Overeaters will sometimes hide behind their physical appearance, using it as a blockade against society. This characteristic is very common in survivors of sexual abuse. They feel guilty for not being "good enough," shame for being overweight, and generally have a very low self-esteem. They use food and eating to cope with these feelings, which only leads into the cycle of feeling them ten-fold and trying to find a way to cope again.

Symptoms of Compulsive Overeating?

Rapid and extreme weight gain
Excessive consumption of food
Buying large amounts of food
Eating when hurt, angry or upset
