Thanks, UNIQUEBLUE! Knowing I need to defend this summer has definitely helped me keep writing almost every day. I'm happy to report that I sent a draft of my findings chapters to my advisor. We'll see how much editing I need to do once he has a chance to read them, but I feel pretty good about them. On to the discussion/conclusion!

Congrats, UNIQUEBLUE! I was nervous when I started recruiting participants, but was kept at it until I reached the sample size I needed. It may take some time, but you'll get there. You just started after all.

I'm making steady progress. My first three chapters have been edited and I've written two findings chapters. I outlined my remaining findings chapter and am starting to write this week. All of my findings need to go to my chair by the end of April so he can review them while I work on the Discussion/Conclusion before going back to make edits.

I finally got IRB approval and have started on my research! I have started my research and have two participants so far, but am nervous about whether I will be able to get enough and adequate people.

Great to hear that you are continuing to make progress.

I just accepted a faculty position this week, so I have to finish my dissertation this summer. My chair approved the first three chapters pending minor revisions and now I'm knee deep in writing up results. The writing is going really slowly since I've had my mind on other things this term, but I think I'll get back into the swing of things soon enough!

Great news, UNIQUE BLUE! Hope your defense goes smoothly.

My defense was a few years ago, but I remember it being a bit dizzying since there were so many ideas flying around. It was a very productive conversation since it was really collegial. I felt as though I knew the most about the topic and was trying to help the faculty understand the some of the theoretical links I was making. They had a lot of suggestions and my chair did a good job of helping the group come to consensus about changes they wanted me to make before my proposal was approved. They weren't major, so I felt good about things.

One suggestion I have would be to see if they are comfortable recording the defense. There was so much discussion that going back to the audio helped me when the time came to make my edits. I was trying to take notes as best I could but missed some things so I it was nice to have another way to capture the ideas.

I have good news...my dissertation proposal was accepted by the URR and I am now waiting to hear when my oral defense of the proposal has been scheduled.

My committee technically includes three people: the chair, 2nd committee member, and the URR (university research reviewer), but only the chair and 2nd committee member participate in the oral review. How did your defense go? Were you nervous?

How big is your committee? Will you be defending in front of these two people only or are there other members?

My committee is four people. My chair and I handled all the revisions and my defense was with the entire group.

Thank you! The next step is multiple rounds of revisions. The chair will get back to me with what revisions I need to make and we will keep going back and forth until she is satisfied and then it will go to the 2nd committee member and have more revisions. When they both are satisfied, then I will be at the point of my oral defense.

Great job, UNIQUEBLUE! It's great to hear that to submitted a full draft of your proposal. Must be such a relief?

Do you need to defend your proposal next or was it already approved by your committee?

I have good news...I finally finished the first draft of my whole proposal. It was not nearly as good as I wanted it to be and there was a ton of information that I had that did not get put into it, but I at least got something in by the midnight deadline on Sunday. I was in danger of getting kicked out of the program if I had received a U (for Unsatisfactory Progress), but I made it on time to pass.

I really like the idea of Amazon gift cards because they can be used for anything that they want. I will have to check also at my grocery store, as they have a whole rack of gift cards and I believe you can get points towards your grocery bill based on how much you spend on the gift cards.

Your baby is adorable! I would rather play with her and care for her and love her than write this lit review!
But, time is awasting for me so I am redoing my proposal for new chair and having to rethink my lit review. Grrrr. I want it done in 6 weeks so any support and encouragement and tips and jokes would be most appreciated.
Please let me know what you each need so I can support you also!

Each day we begin again.

I gave out Amazon.com gift certificates. The flexibility of use was great for my participants and they got them rather quickly as opposed to the other means of compensation I could have used.

I know people who have done Visa gift cards and those are popular as well since they can be used anywhere.

Did you offer the $20 incentives in cash or in gift certificates or some other form? I was thinking of offering gift cards to a local restaurant for $20, but perhaps it would be better to give something else. What do you think?

Thanks! Kudos to you for balancing 3 kids with graduate school. Amazing!

I'm interviewing a pretty responsible population of graduate students for my dissertation. A strong sense of duty coupled with $20 incentives per interview yielded my 100% return rate. I know that I also developed strong rapport with participants and that helped as well.

Now if only I was as diligent in analyzing my data as I am collecting it, I would be in great shape!

Congratulations on the birth of your child! I think it is amazing that you have been able to get anything done at all during this time...I have 3 sons and I remember as if it was yesterday how difficult it was to get anything done in the beginning, even though my youngest just turned 10.

That is good news about the return rate from your participants...and unusual to get 100%! Do you have any secrets you can share about how to get that many people to respond?

Hey all,

Well, the dissertation has been on the back burner for a while. I had my first child in March and needless to say she's kept me quite busy. I had planned on coding a lot of my data before she was born but I had pregnancy induced carpal tunnel and it was too painful to type. The carpal tunnel is gone but it's been a challenge to fit in work with an infant.

On the bright side, I did collect my second round of interview data and had 100% return rate from my participants. Whoo hoo! It's all with my transcriber and I'm slowly starting to code my T1 data. Hoping to make a good dent in these transcripts over the rest of the summer.

Best,
Rosie

I have been slowly working on my literature review and yet am still discouraged by how much more needs to be done. The longer I take, the more new, relevant, updated articles are being published that I think I need to include in it. My health issues have continued to be a huge impediment, reducing the amount of time that I am able to have the clear head I need in order to absorb and write about the journal articles for my literature review.

My dissertation chair suggested a leave of absence in order to try to get my health under control and to not have to pay for yet another quarter of accomplishing next to nothing. I am planning to take her up on it and bow out for the summer quarter, returning full time in the fall. The support of this group will be even more important, as I will not have the dissertation course group that is provided each quarter when I am enrolled.

How is everyone doing? I share in the continued struggle to get these dissertations done. I am sorry to hear about your crisis and hope that you find some peace. I know it is hard to work on the dissertation in the midst of major life issues. I am still stuck on my literature review as well. Health issues are doing more than just take away my ability to consistently focus on writing it; I am also getting more and more discouraged and frustrated in general with living in constant pain.

My literature review was supposed to be done two months ago... but it's slowly progressing. I'm struggling through a personal crisis at the moment (separation and loss) and it's making everything more difficult.

I have not posted my update lately because, unfortunately, I have not made enough progress to actually have anything to update. I have been very stuck, both in my personal life and in my dissertation. I am going to try to make a plan to get my literature review done, step by step, over the next 6-8 weeks.

This quarter I started with a new dissertation committee chair and it is amazing how much difference that makes. I had been making little to no progress on my literature review after a year of working on it under my old chair, but did not realize until after moving to this other person how unhelpful he was. This new chair has actually shown interest in what I am doing, provided advice and guidance, and is encouraging students to interact with one another.

I have a chapter draft sitting on my advisors' desks, and half a (kind of large) introductory chapter written. And in the next 3 weeks I'm supposed to churn out my second chapter. My advisors suggested that I give up sleep in order to get it done.

Seriously.

I'm hoping I can find my way through it without giving up a healthy lifestyle, but we'll see ...

I am currently working on completing my literature review and plan to have the entire proposal completed by the end of this quarter (though that has been my goal every quarter since I began the dissertation last September and I have never succeeded in this goal). This past week, I spent the majority of the time re-grouping and getting myself set up in a better position to be more productive this quarter than I have been in the previous three quarters that I have been working on this literature review. For one thing, I recognized that having too many articles in my database was bogging me down, so went through and deleted close to 2,000 articles. Some were duplicates, some were irrelevant, and some just did not have enough worth to justify taking up space in my database and on my computer. I still have over 4,000 articles saved, but this is definitely an improvement over what it was.

I also went back and reviewed the rubrics that my school has posted for the dissertation. I realized after going over them again that I had not paid enough attention to the introduction to the literature review. I have an introduction to the content in the review, but did not have enough of an explanation there about how I gathered my literature and how I was organizing the review. I looked at other dissertations, particularly those published by Walden students within the last year or two, and used them as a guide for working on my own introduction to the literature review section. I have not completed it yet, but have made progress on it.
