Del Monte makes peach cups, where the chopped peaches are in water and are only 30 calories a cup. They taste good have a natural sweetness to them. I told a girl at work, she snacks on these now too, what else can you eat that only has 30 calories? Nothing I can think of. They taste good too, a good treat! I always have a pack of those around. emoticon This has nothing to do with technical health articles, but is interesting caloric information,so thought I'd share.

i knew about the calories and sodium. The sodium because that is the reason I had so much trouble drinking water. It makes me very sick. I just realized the no sodium seltzer I drink is water! LOL
Here is a little chuckle for you - one day at the market looking for the seltzer, I came across a crowd buying bottles of water for 5 cents more because it was FAT FREE! ! ! Big sign just like that. emoticon

@ GORGONA1: A calorie is a calorie is a calorie. The bacteria in our body use the fiber (soluble) for their own purposes and what the bacterium excrete our bodies then use to function gastroenterically wise.

I'm not good at explaining the details, but here is an interesting article that may help:

http://www.examiner.com/low-carb-lifestyle
-in-national/if-fiber-is-not-digested-
then-why-do-we-count-the-calories-or-carbs-it

I, too, wanted to subtract the carb calories from my diet which calculation would be: number of carbs times four; the sum subtracted from RDI... It won't work which I think sucks. I'd rather subtract the carb calories... emoticon I wanna do that so I can eat more! emoticon

I started using the high quality ground flax seed today, I checked to caloric content : 2 Tbsp =80 calories. the vitamin B complex or the fish oil bottles do not have a caloric contend label. Only the ingredients.

My Benefiber says 2 teaspoons = only 7 Calories, not 15.

I have always recorded the benefiber calories (and fibre) and my Fish Oil Capsules. They are 10 cal's per 1000mg capsule, and = 1g of Fat. My Dietitian has me on 8 caps, and it wasn't uncommon to use 10 or more teaspoons of benefiber (need a VERY high fibre diet) That is a lot of calories to take into account when you are on a low calorie diet!

I wondered about that as well. I take flaxseed and fish oil and the flaxseed per tbsp is approx 37 cal (that's a lot) and then fish oil 10 so that's 47 calories that I don't really get to taste but have to count :(

Did something new today, and it really got the point across. I like french salad dressing, I added a little water to it, after I premeasured, and it spread on my salad alot better. So got that with every bite. I have tryed just dipping the salad in my side of dressing, and that works too, but I used lessing dressing by pouring on salad diluted.

Interesting forum. I guess I don't typically think about medications having calories. I take a fish oil capsule and a PNV daily, but no other meds. I'm not too concerned about it though. I only take 1 g of fish oil daily. 1 g fat = 9 calories. Not sure how much would be in my PNV's, but I can't see it being more than a couple calories, so I'm not going to worry about it.

If your taking meds every day at diffrent times, then this is a great time to burn the calories of the meds and then some. Its a good reminder time (obviously if your taking sleeping meds or such then this doesn't apply). If you take meds 3 times a day and do 10 minutes of cardio each time then before you know it your doing 30 minutes each day. You could actually make a schedule like Monday/Squats, Tuesday/Bicep Curls, ect... Keep your dumbbell or pedometer with your meds so you have to look at it whenever you take them. Before you know it you might be off some the pills! Wouldn't that be great!

Most of your medications the active ingredient is relatively small, so they have to have something to hold it together (especially in cases where you have one pill that does multiple things) Most of the time what holds the active ingredient together is a starch or a sugar, sometimes an oil.

most capsules contain oil whereas things like aspirin and acetaminophen are held together with starch I believe (going off memory here).

its pretty much a rule of thumb if it goes in your mouth, and it isn't JUST water, it has calories. And even if its something you dissolve in water, you are still taking that substance in. If you have a glass of water and you dissolve salt into that water, you are still taking in salt, think of it like that.

Another thing if you are concerned about the amount of sodium you take in, some pills also contain sodium..I know vitamin C does, but other than that I can't think of any.

Hope this helped, but really don't go overboard- they are calories you were taking in before you knew this, so if you were losing weight before I think you are ok.

oh and gone2beach101 who said "Pills contain starch to help keep them stable. Each pill is about 5 calories. I am sure the gel caps and capsules have a few too." is right, pills range from about 5-8 calories, capsules are a little bit more at around 10-15

I had that same issue with the gum thing. But then I did a little searching on the web and found several sites that say that it takes approximately 24 minutes of chewing to burn off 5 calories (11 calories an hour). So, I figure by the time all the flavor is out of the piece of gum, I've "burned" it all off! :)

Well going back to the original question....we kind of went on a medication frenzy lol....other things though... Gum. I chew sugar free gum alot to keep my mouth busy and on the package it says not a low calorie food. it never occurred to me to take things like gum into consideration. And it has like 5 calories a piece which isnt exactly a high calorie food. But think about how many pieces we chew in a day

Why wouldn't Benefiber have calories? Fiber is carbohydrate, and carbs have calories. Basically, if anything has any nutritional value to it, it will have to have calories.

And medicine caplets are usually made of sugar or gelatin. You have to have something in them to hold them together, or to hold the medicine until it gets to your stomach.

I would look at this the same way I look at carrots. Do carrots have calories? Yes. But I guarantee you that I am NOT overweight because I ate too many carrots. In the same way, I am not overweight because of my medicines - I'm overweight because I have eaten far too many nutritionally weak foods while not getting enough exercise.

Clear your mind of what was and will be. See only the task that is.

Be water. Go over it, under it, around it or through it. Be water.

this is very interesting, I had never thought about the calories for meds/vitamins. I have to take flax oil supplements (or fish) for my too low cholesteral. I also take a multi vitaman every day, allergy medicine and when I'm really on it, I drink a calcium supplement. And I'm stunned at the 45 calories for the benefiber in water...thanks for bringing this topic up Mystique, I supposed I shall go home and look at all my bottles in the cupboard! emoticon

SO YOU SHOULD TOO AS WE NEVER COULD FIGURE OUT HOW TO FIND THE CALORIES IN THE PRESCRIPTION MEDS........LOVELY HUH?

I started checking my fiber on SP nutrition and found that I wasn't getting enough fiber so I bought Benefiber. I happen to look at the label and it has 15 calories in 2 tsp and you are to take 2 tsp 3 times a day so that is 45 extra calories I have to add to my menu. At least I found that before I started taking it.

I totally agree with you, I have been taking One A Dy and it has no calorie count on it and I am very happy with those vitamins!!

WELL I CHECKED MY VITAMIN C, CALCIUM AND BABY ASPIRIN BOTTLES AND THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY LISTED ON THE BACK BUT I WOULD SAY WE NEED TO SOMEHOW GOOGLE THIS AND SEE WHAT IT MIGHT TELL US, AS I TAKE ALL THREE OF THESE DAILY AND THE CALCIUM IS TWO 600 A DAY. SO THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO FIND OUT.

NO I DID NOT GO GOOGLING FOR THE INFO IT WAS ACTUALLY ON THE BACK OF THE BOTTLE, I TOO TAKE SEVERAL PRESCRIPTION DRUGS DAILY AND I WONDER ALSO IF THESE HAVE CALORIES AND I WOULD NOT KNOW WHERE WE COULD GO TO FIND OUT ABOUT THEM I WOULD SAY TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE TO STAY WITHIN YOUR RANGE DAILY TO DO LIKE WHITE ANGEL SUGGESTED COUNT 100 CALORIES A DAY FOR MEDICINES THAT WE TAKE AND THAT WOULD INCLUDE SUPPLEMENTS ALSO, AND I WOULD SAY THAT WOULD BE A NICE ROUND FIGURE TO GUESSTIMATE WITH. BUT I ALSO THINK THAT THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT MEDICINES HAVE CALORIES INCLUDED IN THEM.......BUT AT LEAST WE HAVE FOUND OUT AND ARE NOW AWARE OF IT, THANKS AFOOT FOR THE INFO ON THE NATURAL ONES BUT THEY SEEM TO BE ABOUT THE SAME THING, SO WHAT NEXT, I AM WAITING TO SEE WHERE ELSE CALORIES POP UP........

I had no idea. I probably shouldn't be too suprised since cough drops are high in calories as well.

If you ask me, I think that is just crazy, now we have to start checking our daily pills for calories. What next, I'm finding this hard enough as it is. Oh well learn something new every day. Thanks Carol, good eye girl.

Carol...do you think prescription drugs have calories too? I take 5 different ones a day. Was there a site that you checked for the vitamins, etc?

Ok, you made me leave the computer to check mine. I take flaxseed oil (for inflammation) and it also has 10 calories per caplet.

Oh yes, they have calories - especially if you take a fish oil supplement! Argh - how does it go? Count every bite, lick and taste? And vitamin...

Read the talk. Went to the Organice food store to check out 'natural' vitamins. An adult 'all-natural(?)' multi-vitamin has 8 calories per caplet. The only low-calorie vitamins, -8, were the organic(?) powdered type that I'm seeing more of. These are mixed with H20. These had only 3 or 4 calories per serving.

GOOD EYES CAROL! SINCE SOME OF THE VITAMINS & SUPPLEMENTS I HAVE TO TAKE CAN HAVE SIDE EFFECTS, I HAVE TO READ ALL THE LABELS ON THE BOTTLES. SOME CAN CAUSE DIZZIENESS & ALSO SUN EXPOSURE(TOO HOT). I ALWAYS WEAR A CAP OR HAT OUTSIDE. ONE OF THE FIBER CHEWABLES I TAKE HAS 18 CALORIES EACH ONE. GOOD REMINDER TO KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TAKING...ASK YOUR DOC! THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH MY PRESCRIPTIONS IS CUTTING THEM IN HALF(I HAVE A CUTTER) EVERY OTHER DAY, MAKING SURE THEY DON'T RUN OUT, & PACKING THEM UP AHEAD FOR A TRIP. KEEPS MY MIND SHARP.....C

Carol, thanks for the information. I have never counted my vitamins and minerals when tracking my intake. Maybe I should add at least a 100 calories to cover all the ones that I take.

Keep on track

Thank you for this information, Carol. Guess we'd better look. I know the days I don't take my vitamins I have even less energy which goes down to none, so I'll probably adjust the calories elsewhere to accomodate.
