I haven't had issues with fleas in such a long time that I don't normally worry about them. This just got bad recently, but not an infestation where they are jumping on me. Too late, I already took them to vet a week and a half ago. He gave me Capstar that kills the fleas on them, but only lasts 24 hrs. He also gave me Frontline which was most expensive except for the exam and he only charged me for one dog and also prednisone. He said the cheapest route I could take are far as the house would be to use borax. I sprinkled it all over the downstairs on the hardwood floors, carpets, and furniture, left it on while giving the dogs a flea bath, and them swept it up. It seems to have worked the dogs are no longer scratching, but still licking and chewing a bit, but nothing like they were. The prednisone is for the itching. They are driving me nuts because of this med as it makes them hungry and they drink and pee more. I've had a couple of puddles to clean up. They are almost off of it, thank goodness!!

have you tried the pretreatment for fleas. I took my dog camping this summer and I was so worried about fleas that I bought the spot treatment. It was under $20 and I never had any troubles. Hopefully if you get them early then you won't have the vet bill at the end!

If I remember, I will post. So far so good, but I also used Capstar (pill) which kills the fleas on the body, I bathed them, and also used Frontline on them. Also the doctor gave me prednisone for their allergy (itching). That has pretty much stopped, thank goodness!!!

Got my dogs to the vet and it cost about what I thought it would. Just over $100, this included the exams and 3 meds. He did, however, tell me to use borax to kill the fleas in the home as it would be the cheapest thing to do and it works. Thank you Dr. Bob. $3.99 for a box of borax (for laundry). He told me to look online for Borax flea treatment. All you have to do is sprinkle it around the house and blend it into carpeting. Let is sit for a couple of hours and then sweep and mop. This better work!!! I will let you know.

Hi Kim, I'm sorry you are going through so much at this time of the year. It seems the expenses just keep rising while the income just stays the same or maybe even disappears. I hope your job holds on and that 2010 is a better year. I had gotten lax in keeping my spending log but started back up on December 1 as I knew it was going to be a very tight month for me. My savings is about the same as yours and I simply refuse to touch it (even tho' I think about it daily). We will make it through December one day at a time!!

Make this a Healthy Choice Day!

I do shop at the dollar store for those items. There just have been times when I have little in my checking account and don't want to hit the over draft (personal credit loan) again. It takes out $100 and places it in my checking even if is only a few cents. So I end up using the credit card. I guess there really isn't a difference because both charge a finance fee. My credit card is actually less interest. That is why I am saying I NEED to buckle done that it still is a bill and I still am paying more for what I buy. I understand that completely. But you have to do what you have to do sometimes.

My dogs are my babies. I hear you about vet bills though. As for using credit to get what you need in the month here is my take on that. That card is a bill. So in reality you are still using bill money to get the things you need for the month. But if you just payed cash you would have no interest. Your actually paying more for the items then if you bought them with cash. I had to learn this lesson the very hard way. Now i budget tightly for what is needed. The dollar tree is a wonderous place for the daily items, shampoo, soap, shave cream, razors, toothpaste. And may I add they are name brand items most of the time. I'm proud of you for the savings account. Me, i'm still working on that one.

I don't know what I would do without my dogs. They are my children and would be lost without them. If I ever lost my house, I don't know where I would go because my sisters' have cats and my mom lives in a senior complex. I'd be up a creek, but I refuse to give up my dogs.

I have been trying to get some health things out of the way this year, just in case I don't have a job. Yesterday I was debating about going back to the orthopedic doctor to have my right hip checked again. It has been giving me little twinges of pain, but it might be from the exercise I have been doing....paranoid I guess. I ignored it before and ended up with a left hip replacement. I was told I had a 50/50 chance of the condition being in another joint, but right now the pain isn't bad not like before.

I've been paying a little more than the minimum on this card or trying to. Yes I want to get it back down.

It's so hard to not overspend at the end of the year, and especially when your worried about the future. I'd just take it easy for the next month or two, put the credit card away and make it a priority to pay it off. Because later you will just push it to the side and end up paying the minimum (like I have done, which got me into debt)and carrying a balance for a long time, waiting for better times.

I love dogs and it's great you are able to keep them! I'm sure it can be expensive though to take care of them with food and vet visits. But if you gotta take them to the vet, you got too. I've been putting off a doctor's appointment forever now (just a blood test and checkup) but it's on my list and it will have to get done. Health should always come first...although I must admit I am a procrastinator when it comes to money!

Good job on your savings account! emoticon

I am getting a little nervous as I decided to get new glasses, well not decided I need new glasses, and to get my dogs to the vet. I wanted to get my glasses while my insurance was still effect, just in case my job ends at the end of the month.

I still haven't heard if the contract between companies has been approved or not. The thought of not having a job scares the **** out of me! I know there is always unemployment, but that doesn't go very far either.

Anyways, I figure I could get my glasses with really no problem until I looked at the balance of my active credit card bill. Ooppss!! Spending a little too much lately to get by...food, gas, other needed personal items....as I have used all my "cash" on bills. I had been doing so well or so I thought!! I thought I pay half on the credit card and half from my checking. Telling this to my mom, she said she didn't want me to put it on my credit card and that she would give me some money instead. Okay, that is good, I guess.

Now I have to take my dogs to the vet, which I was seriously hoping I wouldn't have to. I emailed my vet about fleas and he wants to look them over to make sure they don't have infections from the bites....of course he does...$$$$$ for him. My vet told me he would only charge me for one dog at the visit tomorrow. Great, but I know I will be getting some meds (flea killing meds and most likely antibiotics) which really won't cost much through him, but I will have to get spray for my home. I have no idea what I will be spending! The visit alone for one dog is a lot in my opinion!

So with looking at my credit card balance, I guess I need to buckle down again and track my spending. Ugh, I am keeping up on my pymts to all my bills, but when I saw that balance it has made me very nervous. Hey at least I did open up a savings account with a whopping $75!!!!
