I love chocolate and can really relate. The best thing for me is to not have it in the house. Unfortunately my husband likes to 'treat' me. I may need to enlighten him that this is not really a treat. So Missy, I have to tell you, this is the first day I am back on Spark People. I have started over and since I just turned 60 I've decided I really need to change my habits. About time! I've had hypothyroidism for over 25 years and was happy to see this group. I hope to gain some insight into what works and what doesn't. By the way, my name is Alice. My user name Aaltje is my Dutch name. I love chocolate as it is one of my "problem" foods! I do luckily like dark chocolate. I have some about 1-2 times a week. My husband knows he cannot bring any other kind of chocolate home because it won't last the night much less a few days. Hope to see suggestions here.

Not a brand per se but the amount of Cacao. I did find Ghirardelli Midnight Reverie at 86% but there are many others out there. Bernard Castelain 85%, Galler 85%, Lindt Excellence 85% (swish chocolate), Michel Cluizel 85%, Hachez Cru Premier 88% (german chocolate). Theere are others

A chocolate bar is almost entirely sugar, so a "77 percent" chocolate bar will contain about 23 percent sugar. The higher the percentage number on the wrapper, then, the lower the percentage of sugar and the less sweet, more bitter and complex the flavor of the bar will be.

It all starts with cacao (kah-KAY-oh), not cocoa, beans. Cacao beans are the seeds of the fruit of the tropical tree Theobroma cacao. (Theobroma literally means "food of the gods,") The bitter cacao bean was enjoyed as a spice by the Mayans and Aztecs. When it arrived to Europe it was sweetened with sugar.

I posted this on another thread but wanted to add it here to get ideas started.

I did find that there is a secret to the Chocolate. To be low in sugar, you need to have 85% or higher in Cacao. I looked on a few packages in the store and were amazed. 70% cocoa has 12% sugar, 86% had 5%. That is a big difference. If you dont like dark chocolate this will not be an enjoyable chocolate. Glad I like dark Chocolate.

Anyone else have trivia about sweet foods.
