Good job getting the trainer. I've often wondered what it would be like.

Slipping up on Phase 2... added back in wine... wine makes me want to eat... so back to phase 1 and no wine. On the upside, working with a trainer and back in the workout mode.

Some how I missed this post when I started Phase 2 on Monday. Wish I had seen it. Apparently toast with breakfast makes me crave :(. And I have tried a new starch everyday. Yesterday was just a bad day all around. We weren't supposed to have to be at work till noon due to the weather, but it ended up not being as bad as everyone thought and theyy called us in at 9. It wouldn't have been a problem If I had been prepared but I was still lounging around and hadn't even eat breakfast yet and I had no time to put anything together. I ended up with a bowl of cereal all day long so by the time dinner rolled around there was no saying no to hamburgers (with the bun) and baked beans that my hubby was kind enough to throw together. Today I am trying to be better. I will add berries in this weekend when I go shopping.

Be thankful for the blessings you have instead of disappointed in the ones you don't!

So know how that feels. I did a three month cleansing when I first joined Spark which involved no sucrose or lactose except for 1/2 a lemon a day.
I have never been so happy to see fruit and some root veges as I was after that period. However have to say it did do the trick regarding carbs in the processed form. :)

ENJOY.

Hi there and welcome to the team and Spark People.

I came from the opposite side of the fence. I've been doing low carb for several years on a plan which did not limit fat. Stopped losing so decided I wanted to try cutting it down.
Is working well so far. I have lost 4lb this month. Very happy with that. If I lose fast, my tendency is to regain and I am more concerned this time around (having used many diets over my lifetime - now 74) in keeping off what I lose.

Wishing you well this week. I am loving all the veges I now get. Pretty restricted on low carb.

I've never been much of a coffee or tea drinker, but I recently gave green tea a chance and I rather enjoyed it.

I think I need to go back on a mini phase 1 and then do this phase again. I added too many carbs too fast and feel like I've undone some of my work!

I like the Irish Breakfast better than the English Breakfast tea but I think they both have caffeine. I drink tea all day.

I could not have stood coffee black - so strong.

I've never heard of that one. It sounds delightful. I do enjoy the Irish Breakfast, it has an even more definite flavour that English Breakfast.

With the coffee if was my belly that got upset. I drank it strong and black - loved the flavour and I think maybe it was aggravating my stomach lining. Thought I maybe had an ulcer. However after I stopped drinking it, no more problems.
I don't think it can be the buzz with tea. I tend to drink it in the morning and have several cups before lunch, then for some reason seldom think of it later.

Years ago I drank coffee and when I was forced to quit I realized I actually liked the buzz and not the taste. I put so much sweetener and cream in it I didn't even taste the coffee. It really woke me up and gave me energy and had a diuretic and laxative effect on me but it caused me to have too much energy and heart palpitations. I still miss the smell of coffee but not really the taste. I like to go into the coffee aisle and smell the coffees. LOL.

I wish they made a decaffeinated type of some blends like Lady Irish. I have not found one so far. I love that tea.

Yes, I think it's the taste of tea I enjoy. I do like a good strong cup of English Breakfast, but don't really know if it is the caffeine or the flavour that is so enjoyable. Guess if I change over I will find out. The reason I didn't was because there is much less caffeine than in the coffee which was causing me bad stomach pains in the end.

I like the decaf tea but then I like the taste of tea. I think if you like tea and coffee to get a "buzz on" then you might be disappointed in decaf tea. Tea doesn't have the caffeine that coffee does anyway.

I should be drinking decaff tea as well Morticia, but so far I seem able to get away with it without much discomfort. I guess the day will come.... Have to say that now I am used to decaf I never think of real coffee. But I do like strong tea. Perhaps the decaf still has a good strong flavour.

Thanks ladies and especially Kierae.

Yes, I find that combining foods and eating a balanced evening meal is a great help. Also finishing a meal with pure meat, fish or cheese seems to cut out any craving I may have set up earlier in the meal. Or a cup of tea with no sweetner is also helpful.

I can crave textures as much as what is in them. We are strange creatures indeed. :)

I drink decaf coffee because of the caffeine - but tea suits me better at night after my main meal for dealing with any lingering "taste bud excitement". :)

As Kierae said the yeast is necessary but it only takes a small amount for the yeast and some breads add extra sweetening. Some have HFCS, malt, molasses, and honey to improve the flavor. It's better to choose ones that the yeast and sugar are listed together down the ingredient list, certainly not in the first 5 ingredients. I've seen breads with anywhere from 1g to 5g of sugar here per slice but I'm sure there are breads with more. That doesn't include total carbs. It's not really a problem unless every carb counts and it does for me. You can control this somewhat by choosing the thinner breads, ones with more fiber, high protein breads. The firmer grainier breads are less glycemic.

Like Kierae said, berries are one of the best foods to add back as they hardly ever trigger anyone. Cantaloupe is another. I have also read that if you eat bananas they are less glycemic if they are not as ripe.

Linda - most bread have sugar in it because it feeds the yeast. Pay attention to the fiber content and the portion size.

Historygirl - I am a little concerned with not only adding granola which normally has alot of sugar in it but also adding a banana which is one of the higher glycemic index fruits too. Just seems like it could potentially be a recipe for a trigger. I would suggest starting with a berry (they are lower GI). Or don't eat the granola and the banana on the same day. Check those stats on the granola!

The bread should be one ounce. Some breads are over sized. The sugar amount is not specified but it would be prudent to not go overboard with it or it may cause a trigger.

I just started Phase 1.5 today!! What are the stats on a bread serving? I know 3g fiber per slice and must be 100% whole wheat, rye or grain. Right? And nothing 'enriched'. What about the sugar??

The issue with most granola is the amount of sugar in it so if you can find one that is low sugar (sugars should be wayyyy down the ingredient list). I use Kashi GoLean original (not the crunch). 1/8th cup in my granola is just enough crunch for me which then leaves you wiggle room for another starch/grain in the day if you like.

Hi -
I am getting ready to start phase 2 tomorrow (I lost 6 pounds in phase 1 - was hoping for more, but I feel great from the change in food!)
I am registered on the South Beach site and I couldn't find a good answer, so you maybe you guys can help?
The only thing I'm really desperate to change is my breakfast - I'm sick of cooking each morning and I miss my yogurt - but I know it's not enough to keep me full. I'm planning on adding some berries to it (my favorite!) but I was wondering if I could also add some granola to it - the kind I usually eat is UDI's gluten free (I'm not necessarily gluten free - I just like that kind). Do you think that would be okay? Is there a whole grain/better option you might recommend - cereal or something? Just for a little substance and crunch? I only add one small serving (1/4 cup and I always measure). What do you think?
Thanks!

Still out here, just not being as diligent about checking in. Maybe that's why I waver. Anywho, I've doing FAIRLY well with keeping things in check. This weekend we went up to the camp where our daughter works (9200 feet). I can't decide if the headache I've had is because I probably didn't get enough water or I ate a ton of carbs (hey, it's camp, you eat what they have....that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) and my body went in to shock. Thoughts?

Most folks can't tolerate eating a couple servings of grains/carbs every day and still lose weight. So really go slow.

Take it slow and don't introduce starches too quickly.

Starting phase two and I didn't lose alot but I am focusing on feeling better. I am adding a bit of bread (amazingly enough happy with 1 slice of Nature Valley 15 grain bread) and fruit yogurt and some brown rice. I am going to focus on getting one more carb from phase 2 in, while basically still following phase 1. I'm hoping I don't fall into my bad habits of eating rice, noodles, bread with meals because that's the way I learned to cook!

I sometimes like a little long cooking brown rice too but I keep it to a serving.

Great plan. Quinoa is an excellent choice for a grain. Even I can handle it. LOL.

Hi everyone! Well, tomorrow I begin phase 1.5 and am so excited, can't wait to have my berries back! I only lost about 5 lbs on phase 1, but that's ok, I'd been eating strictly plant based before that (Dr Fuhrman's Eat to Live) and lost about 15 lbs doing that, but found I wasn't feeling too well without some meat and a little more fat in my diet. I remembered how well I had done a few years ago on SB, so decided to go back to the beach and I'm glad I did!

Plan for this week.... blueberries with my evening snack of yogurt and almonds. I'll see how I do with that for a few days, then add in another piece of fruit at snack time, maybe with a little more yogurt. Maybe the following week I'll try a grain, although I'm kind of afraid of grains, they tend to trigger me. I'll probably try a teeny amount of quinoa and see how that goes.

Anyway, that's tht plan for now. Wish me luck!

If you're tired of starting over, stop giving up!

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

I would just go slow and try for low glycemic foods to start like berries, cantaloupe, etc. They seldom stall anyone.

I'm now in Phase2 and will see how this goes. I was on phase 1 a bit longer because of a break in the middle during vacation. I intend on adding things into my diet slowly and am anxious that the scale won't like me now. My metabolism is slow since I hit my 50s. However, I knew I had to start eating some healthy carbs again. Crossing my fingers.

Phase 2 (1.5) is much easier to do on the road than phase 1. You just have to keep in mind that this is a lifestyle way of eating so therefore lose the diet mentality and just make the best choices available to you. Keep yourself to portion sizes, skip the whites/unprocessed/desserts as much as possible. If you go out to eat, check online to see if the place has a menu - most folks do these days. Then you can peruse it and figure out better choices (and you can always ask for help from us). If someone else is cooking for you, load up on the veggies/salad first, protein next and then a dab of anything else. Don't get obsessive about whats in the food or that if you eat a baked potato, its going to cause havoc. Most of us didn't get overweight from a baked potato. It was everything else we loaded onto it, followed by eating plenty of desserts/sweets/sugar ladened/ processed foods.

This will be a challenge but its a good one for you to practice your tools.

Since it's family I would send them a copy of the food lists for the diet. If it's something I can't eat I just say, "No thanks." Everyone in my extended family has strong food likes and dislikes and we are okay with it. For instance, when we eat out dad likes stir fry and rice. I like steak and broccoli. I have a long list of foods I hate like tomatoes, raw onions, ranch dressing, horseradish, mayo. My dad hates vinegar so he has oil only on his salads. We don't feel we have to eat the same thing. If you eat out I would suggest buffets as it is easy to eat on plan that way.

I am new to Spark People although I signed up awhile ago. After many diets in my lifetime I am trying the SB Diet because of the health benefits. I am close to phase 2 and have lost 8 pounds. This 1.5 approach seems to make the most sense to me. My biggest concern is my upcoming two week trip to visit family right when I enter phase 2. Any suggestions?

For those of us who are fortunate to reach maintenance at some point Kierae is an expert in how to eat and maintain it. I sometimes think maintenance may be harder than losing the weight.

I have been eating SB style since 1/2007. What I have found is to keep this an ongoing way of life, you really do more of an ongoing phase 1.5. I rotate days of phase 1 in with phase 2. I occasionally have phase "3" days which are then followed by phase 1 days. Once your realize that you can do this, you can continue to lose your weight, maintain your weight and/or bring your weight back in line (for those in maintenance).

Glad you are working on figuring out what is going to be successful for you!

Love this P1.5 approach! Makes so much sense. Last time I was on SB, I slowed down dramatically on P2. Eventually stalled and quit the diet after about 8 months. How stupid of me!

I am going to stay on P1 for an extra week but will look forward to P1.5. Thank you Team Leaders for such great support and advice!!

Well, I am almost a week in to Phase 1.5 and my weight is slowly but steadily heading down :). I have added steel cut oats and strawberries to my breakfast and an apple to my afternoon snack without any issues. I had a craving for something yesterday but I think that was more a case of being around the house on the weekend than a real food craving - I made myself a ricotta/vanilla/artificial sweetener/strawberry 'cheesecake' and was fine. I have had some alcohol but not much and it doesn't seem to be affecting anything.

I am counting my carbs/calories/fat/fibre, it helps keep me on track and I am still consistently under what my recommended carbs should be. At the end of the day, fat seems to be 50% of my calories.

Any suggestions or should I not worry about this?

Average weight loss in p1 is 10% of your goal. Sounds like you are right on target! Transition and just do a 1.5 for now to see if you cant get another drop.

I will have finished my two weeks at Phase 1 tomorrow and I am only down 3 pounds. I keep reading all these posts of people that are down 8 to 13 and feel discouraged. My total weight I want to lose is 15, should I move to 1.5 anyway or stay at Phase 1 longer?

The above info is helpful, thanks. I don't really crave anything but I used to eat berries every day (supposed to be good for your brain!) so would probably start adding those back in.

I am ready to start phase 1.5. I can now drink my coffee without sugar and not really miss it. That was the hardest part of phase 1 for me. I like the idea of having a concrete plan on adding fruit and good carbs back into my diet. I am planning on having a piece of whole wheat toast with my eggs or maybe having unsweetened oatmeal once in a while. We have a lot of apples on our trees right now so I will start with an apple a day and see how that goes. Tracking my food has been a big help in keeping me on the straight and narrow. Thanks for all the good tips.

In order for things to change they have to be NOT THE SAME

Most of us have found this approach works best for us, especially if you have medical problems like metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS, etc.

So glad to have found a SB team! Never heard of the 1.5 phase but it makes so much sense. I usually did well after the first 3 days of phase 1 up until about the second week of phase two when I got all kind of craving crazy again thanks for the info and instructions! I finish phase 1 in 3 days and have a better outlook. emoticon

Very impressive weight loss!! I highly recommend berries! They usually don't trigger anyone.

Congrats on your weight loss- thats fantastic! You could stay on p1 for an additional week since it appears you have 100lbs to lose which fits SB's recommendations. Berries is an excellent starter fruit!

In 3 days I'll be starting phase 2 and I'm not sure if I should stay in phase 1 for another week. As of today I lost 17 lbs and I feel great! I will start with either one serving of raspberries or a WASA cracker with tuna. I'm so grateful for this support group as it's been the biggest help knowledge-wise.

Congrats on finishing p1! Just keep it slow and see how you do with each food as you add it. emoticon

I am an one point fiver officially. I lost 13 lbs from Phase 1.

Loving a little fruit now strawberries, cantaloupe chunk hear and there. Today I had a small banana.

I am NOT venturing too far away from phase 1 though. I don't want to bring back the those cravings and slow things down too much. I am real leery about emoticon it.

Be sure and drink plenty of water and get your beans in. It can help with the fatigue. Be sure to watch your salt too as it can make you feel bloated. It's hard to get adequate nutrition under 1200 calories a day.

I had so much fatigue last week that I started 1.5 a couple of days early. I have added an apple/applesauce serving and blackberries with no problem. My body still seems happier with about 1000 calories or less. any more and I feel emoticon . I don't do it intentionally, just happens that way.

Just in time. It is two weeks tomorrow that I restarted by SBD and I was wondering what I should do. The first time I did Phase 1 for 3 weeks before started on 2 and I didn't know if I should do that again this time or just add one thing back and do the 1.5 phase. I want to lose more than the 30 lbs I lost the first time. I was stuck at that loss for 3 years or more and I was happy there but I know I would be happier if I lost 50. I have to be careful at my age because I don't want to end up a wrinkly skinny witchy looking old lady.

Hello!! Just wanted to thank you all for adding this thread to the toolbox. This is exactly where I am right now.

I am get ready to transition to Phase 2 (on Sunday) and add some of those complex carbs back in, and I'm a little nervous that it'll trigger cravings or stall my losses again.

Think I'm going to take it really slow. Start with just one addition at a time....and read up on your tips.

Thanks again!!

Everyone is afraid to leave the comfort zone of phase 1. Many of us do a "version" of p2 called p1.5. This can be individualized because you must figure out what works for you. The point is to figure out how many servings and what foods you can eat and still lose (or maintain) weight.

So starting out:

Figure out which food you are missing and add that...and ONLY that. You can add a fruit AND/or a carb but you still need to just eat that and do it for a couple days. See if you start having any cravings or weight gain. If you add too many things, you won't know which food it is you are reacting to. Most triggers/cravings kick in within 18-24 hours or so. This is why it is better honestly to only add in one new food at a time. On day 3, try something new. If you decide to add a fruit AND a grain - don't add them at the same meal (again it is too hard to figure out what triggered you IF it does).

* If you crave, try adding protein, eating the item at a different time during the day (i.e. some folks can't have starches or fruits before lunch or they crave), or switch the item. Some people tolerate fruit better than others, some tolerate starches better. DON'T assume that if, for instance, oatmeal makes you crave, that you can't have any starches or any oat products. Different products (even different brands!) can make a difference in craving vs. not craving.

* If you gain weight, try something different the next week, but keep the item in mind so you can try it again some day. You never know what might eventually work out for you!

* If you do well, no cravings, no gain, add something new. Do the SAME process as you did with the first item...add ONE thing and only ONE thing (the SAME one) and assess. If you tried a fruit before, try a starch, or vice versa.

** Do the same evaluation and keep going on at this process, repeating steps 1 and 2 until you start gaining or craving after a period of successful eating. You may have to tinker with your 'combo' to get it just right, but eventually you'll know what you can do. Don't be afraid to play with it even after you decide what works for you. Little changes might work too! For instance, I normally eat one starch and one fruit a day but I know I can eat up to 2 servings of each..but not 3 or 4. If I eat two servings of grains, I normally have to follow it with a day of p1 (I will gain if I eat two servings of grains daily).

**Some folks find they can not eat a grain/starch every day. You may find you do better rotating a couple days of p1 into your week. Also berries are an excellent fruit to start with since it is lower glycemic. Do protein when you initially bring in fruit to your diet. Think yogurt and fruit. Cheese or peanut butter w/apples.

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie
