I used to be a late night snacker too but broke myself of it finally. I don't eat after 7 P.M. now. It sounds like you drink is really helping you!

I am a late night snacker. I don't want to go to bed hungry and this is what works for me...
What I have been doing is to make a cup of tea or some warm non-fat milk with a tablespoon of baking cocoa in it. This slows me down and makes me think about better choices. I'm not sure this will still work in the summer, but it sure works during the winter months. Good luck!

I usually drink a glass of water and get busy if that happens and it passes.

Thank you for the feedback, that makes sense, sometimes I think its just the bad eating habits that pop up from time to time. For the most part I might only have cravings once maybe twice a day but I don't follow through on them.

If general, if you are having cravings you will be specifically be craving carbs. You won't be thinking I want a hard boiled egg or piece of chicken but I would like some chips, bread, candy, etc. It will usually occur before your normal time to eat as well. Say if you have a normal breakfast and an hour an half later you are already hungry again that is usually a craving. Your blood sugar should not be rising and falling that rapidly with adequate protein and fat intake and a normal amount of healthy carbs.

I have started phase 1.5 and have been doing well I have been doing either one fruit or one starch daily. I have been doing well still losing, but I wanted to know how I will know if I am truly hungry versus having a craving can you explain how I will know the difference?

I have been tracking my food, and Sparkpeople have been telling me that I need to consume more. I have been following the Southbeach Diet books, including their cookbooks. I have been slowly trying all their recipes (not done yet) and often eat larger servings than they recommend. I'll keep an eye on it - thanks for your advice!

It's difficult to say. It's normal to slow down after phase one but a lot of people stall out. That is why many of us chose to track and count calories and carbs even though it is not required on South Beach. You can over eat the diet. Sparkpeople tends to recommend too many calories and carbs. If you track your food I might be able to see what your problem is if there is one.

I have added fruit back into my diet, mainly blueberries or apples, but not every day. I have added sweet potatoes once or twice a week. I also have been going into the phase 2 recipes for dinner ideas. Last night was a ground turkey patty with wild rice in it (but I did alter the recipe to only half the rice). Do you think I'm limiting my phase 1.5 too much? I haven't stalled, but the weight loss has slowed down enough to worry me.

A lot of us use unsweetened almond milk. You can also have unsweetened coconut milk, the kind in the box or carton. Or unsweetened soy milk. Make sure they don't have high fructose corn syrup in them.

Cheese does not count toward your 2 required dairy servings a day. You could have soy cheese too as long as it does not contain unbeachy ingredients.

Yogurt, cheese, and kefir usually don't cause lactose intolerance. They also make lactose free milk now if you can find skim or low fat.

Thank you for clarifying this for me. I also have another question, since I started phase 1 I have been eating regular yogurt because I thought its only the first two weeks and then I can eat something else but I am lactose intolerant and I get digestive problems which I didn't mind if it would only be for two weeks but its looking like this process is going to be much longer than I bargained for so what would you suggest that I can have instead of milk/yogurt and milk/cheese. Are there any acceptable lactose free substitutions for those? Thanks for your response.

No it is not the same. Actually phase 1.5 is not something from South Beach. It's something that came up due to the fact so many people stalled out and had problems going into phase 2. Dr. A. kind of addressed it later on. Personally I don't recommend that people start with a starch at all but with one low glycemic fruit like berries or cantaloupe as hardly anyone stalls on berries and it makes the transition smoother. Eat the berries once a day for 2 or 3 days and see if you stall, gain weight, have cravings, are triggered. Then try another low glycemic fruit for a couple of days and do the same thing. After that maybe a starch. If you eat both a starch and a fruit then you won't know what caused the problem. Just so that you know, people are often stalled out by either fruits or starches and for most of us it is starches. Many of us found we could not eat more than one starch a day without problems. 2 of the 3 leaders of this team for sure and maybe the other as well. Personally I would recommend something without gluten as a first starch. So many people are wheat sensitive. You could have a starchy veggie like peas, sweet potatoes, winter squash, pumpkin, which usually don't cause problems or some brown long cooking rice. Steel cut oats. Many people tolerate both of them. The oats stalled me. Remember, eat only a serving of these.

There is something that I want to clear up on phase 1.5, In the book it says to start your first day with one starch and one fruit is that the same as in phase 1.5 or just add one fruit or one starch on the first day? What type of starch would be a good choice to start out on the first day of phase 1.5 with? Suggestions would be appreciated.

Some how I missed this post when I started Phase 2 on Monday. Wish I had seen it. Apparently toast with breakfast makes me crave :(. And I have tried a new starch everyday. Yesterday was just a bad day all around. We weren't supposed to have to be at work till noon due to the weather, but it ended up not being as bad as everyone thought and theyy called us in at 9. It wouldn't have been a problem If I had been prepared but I was still lounging around and hadn't even eat breakfast yet and I had no time to put anything together. I ended up with a bowl of cereal all day long so by the time dinner rolled around there was no saying no to hamburgers (with the bun) and baked beans that my hubby was kind enough to throw together. Today I am trying to be better. I will add berries in this weekend when I go shopping.

Be thankful for the blessings you have instead of disappointed in the ones you don't!

So know how that feels. I did a three month cleansing when I first joined Spark which involved no sucrose or lactose except for 1/2 a lemon a day.
I have never been so happy to see fruit and some root veges as I was after that period. However have to say it did do the trick regarding carbs in the processed form. :)

ENJOY.

Hi there and welcome to the team and Spark People.

I came from the opposite side of the fence. I've been doing low carb for several years on a plan which did not limit fat. Stopped losing so decided I wanted to try cutting it down.
Is working well so far. I have lost 4lb this month. Very happy with that. If I lose fast, my tendency is to regain and I am more concerned this time around (having used many diets over my lifetime - now 74) in keeping off what I lose.

Wishing you well this week. I am loving all the veges I now get. Pretty restricted on low carb.

I've never been much of a coffee or tea drinker, but I recently gave green tea a chance and I rather enjoyed it.

I think I need to go back on a mini phase 1 and then do this phase again. I added too many carbs too fast and feel like I've undone some of my work!

I like the Irish Breakfast better than the English Breakfast tea but I think they both have caffeine. I drink tea all day.

I could not have stood coffee black - so strong.

I've never heard of that one. It sounds delightful. I do enjoy the Irish Breakfast, it has an even more definite flavour that English Breakfast.

With the coffee if was my belly that got upset. I drank it strong and black - loved the flavour and I think maybe it was aggravating my stomach lining. Thought I maybe had an ulcer. However after I stopped drinking it, no more problems.
I don't think it can be the buzz with tea. I tend to drink it in the morning and have several cups before lunch, then for some reason seldom think of it later.

Years ago I drank coffee and when I was forced to quit I realized I actually liked the buzz and not the taste. I put so much sweetener and cream in it I didn't even taste the coffee. It really woke me up and gave me energy and had a diuretic and laxative effect on me but it caused me to have too much energy and heart palpitations. I still miss the smell of coffee but not really the taste. I like to go into the coffee aisle and smell the coffees. LOL.

I wish they made a decaffeinated type of some blends like Lady Irish. I have not found one so far. I love that tea.

Yes, I think it's the taste of tea I enjoy. I do like a good strong cup of English Breakfast, but don't really know if it is the caffeine or the flavour that is so enjoyable. Guess if I change over I will find out. The reason I didn't was because there is much less caffeine than in the coffee which was causing me bad stomach pains in the end.

I like the decaf tea but then I like the taste of tea. I think if you like tea and coffee to get a "buzz on" then you might be disappointed in decaf tea. Tea doesn't have the caffeine that coffee does anyway.

I should be drinking decaff tea as well Morticia, but so far I seem able to get away with it without much discomfort. I guess the day will come.... Have to say that now I am used to decaf I never think of real coffee. But I do like strong tea. Perhaps the decaf still has a good strong flavour.

I love tea but can only have decaffeinated tea. I'm glad they offer so many more selections now.

Thanks ladies and especially Kierae.

Yes, I find that combining foods and eating a balanced evening meal is a great help. Also finishing a meal with pure meat, fish or cheese seems to cut out any craving I may have set up earlier in the meal. Or a cup of tea with no sweetner is also helpful.

I can crave textures as much as what is in them. We are strange creatures indeed. :)

I drink decaf coffee because of the caffeine - but tea suits me better at night after my main meal for dealing with any lingering "taste bud excitement". :)

As Kierae said the yeast is necessary but it only takes a small amount for the yeast and some breads add extra sweetening. Some have HFCS, malt, molasses, and honey to improve the flavor. It's better to choose ones that the yeast and sugar are listed together down the ingredient list, certainly not in the first 5 ingredients. I've seen breads with anywhere from 1g to 5g of sugar here per slice but I'm sure there are breads with more. That doesn't include total carbs. It's not really a problem unless every carb counts and it does for me. You can control this somewhat by choosing the thinner breads, ones with more fiber, high protein breads. The firmer grainier breads are less glycemic.

Like Kierae said, berries are one of the best foods to add back as they hardly ever trigger anyone. Cantaloupe is another. I have also read that if you eat bananas they are less glycemic if they are not as ripe.

Linda - most bread have sugar in it because it feeds the yeast. Pay attention to the fiber content and the portion size.

Historygirl - I am a little concerned with not only adding granola which normally has alot of sugar in it but also adding a banana which is one of the higher glycemic index fruits too. Just seems like it could potentially be a recipe for a trigger. I would suggest starting with a berry (they are lower GI). Or don't eat the granola and the banana on the same day. Check those stats on the granola!

I'm sure you saw the comment that the granola needs to be low sugar.

I've added some granola with my yogurt and today I think I'll have a banana, but I'm going slow. I've felt so great on phase 1, even though I only lost 3 pounds!

The bread should be one ounce. Some breads are over sized. The sugar amount is not specified but it would be prudent to not go overboard with it or it may cause a trigger.

I just started Phase 1.5 today!! What are the stats on a bread serving? I know 3g fiber per slice and must be 100% whole wheat, rye or grain. Right? And nothing 'enriched'. What about the sugar??

The issue with most granola is the amount of sugar in it so if you can find one that is low sugar (sugars should be wayyyy down the ingredient list). I use Kashi GoLean original (not the crunch). 1/8th cup in my granola is just enough crunch for me which then leaves you wiggle room for another starch/grain in the day if you like.

Hi -
I am getting ready to start phase 2 tomorrow (I lost 6 pounds in phase 1 - was hoping for more, but I feel great from the change in food!)
I am registered on the South Beach site and I couldn't find a good answer, so you maybe you guys can help?
The only thing I'm really desperate to change is my breakfast - I'm sick of cooking each morning and I miss my yogurt - but I know it's not enough to keep me full. I'm planning on adding some berries to it (my favorite!) but I was wondering if I could also add some granola to it - the kind I usually eat is UDI's gluten free (I'm not necessarily gluten free - I just like that kind). Do you think that would be okay? Is there a whole grain/better option you might recommend - cereal or something? Just for a little substance and crunch? I only add one small serving (1/4 cup and I always measure). What do you think?
Thanks!

Could be the altitude or mild dehydration.

Still out here, just not being as diligent about checking in. Maybe that's why I waver. Anywho, I've doing FAIRLY well with keeping things in check. This weekend we went up to the camp where our daughter works (9200 feet). I can't decide if the headache I've had is because I probably didn't get enough water or I ate a ton of carbs (hey, it's camp, you eat what they have....that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) and my body went in to shock. Thoughts?

Most folks can't tolerate eating a couple servings of grains/carbs every day and still lose weight. So really go slow.

Take it slow and don't introduce starches too quickly.
