It gets easier the longer you are on the diet. Fresh is best - you can control the ingredients. You can always ask for the nutrition info. I recommend batch cooking - you can cook several meals at one time and then just heat them up on busy days.

Veggies are the foundation of the diet. They are important to get in as are your beans. You might want to watch the cheese as it can stall some people. 2 servings a day at most in phase one, one a day in phase 2.

I was just thinking of some shortcuts to having something on hand. Looks like SB is mostly about fresh. Which is good, but one has to do a lot of planning! Some of the whole foods places makes their own soups,to, but probably the same situation as with canned, right? We have a new Fresh Market in our neighborhood, but haven't checked it out. Pricey is what I've heard about it!
P1 day 2 breakfast... Same as yesterday, eggs w/peppers and onions, 2 pieces turkey bacon. Snack... Cheese stick and later some cheese samples at a grocery store w/o crackers. :) dinner.... BIG salad w/tomatoes, green onion, 1/2 avocado, 1T light feta cheese, warm chicken breast and 2T Cardini's Caesar dressing. Dessert.... Greek yogurt w/crystal light and snack 4 later... 2T natural peanut butter w/celery. Don't think I got all my veggies in 4 2day, either!!!

Most canned soup has too much sodium in it as well and I think it's important to keep that in check. Homemade soup is so much better.

No on the soups. If you read the ingredients on the soup you will find that all the soups have thickening agents in them, many have noodles or potatoes or corn. Now you could make up a pot of your own soup and then just freeze it.

On your food choices: make sure you hit the 4.5 cups of veggies!

Today is day 1 on phase 1! For Breakfast I had 2 creamy style eggs with sprinkling of cheese, onions and peppers. Ate late breakfast so just had a snack of celery and light laughing cow cheese. Dinner was chili with beans and sauteed yellow squash and zucchini. Dessert was 1/2 cup Greek yogurt with some peach mango Crystal Light.

Does Progresso have any soups that are okay with SB? I seen they have lentil and split pea with ham. Would these work on phase 1?

Dr. A, says light or fat free - 2 tbs. I reserve it for special occasions.

Hi,
I noticed you use Cool Whip on some of your desserts. Is that light, fat free, or sugar free?

Thanks,

I agree. I have hypoglycemia so sugar, honey, agave, molasses, etc. is all equally problematic for me but I would not worry about a small amount of them occasionally if I weren't. They key to it is that you really shouldn't use any of these products every day/all day because you are just perpetuating a problem - feeding a sweet tooth. Once you back off the sweet tooth then you can appreciate the natural sweetness of some veggies and fruits.

I would also suggest that if artificial sweeteners are an issue - then make a lifestyle judgement. IE use honey or agave but use it sparingly. If you are eliminating the junk from all your diet, using something from a more natural source (such as the honey) is less of an issue unless you are diabetic.

I can relate. My mom and grandmother both had to take dilantin and phenobarbitol which was what they gave years ago. The med I take is a heart med and I can't get out of taking it either. And I hate the side effects. I guess things could be worse though. There are people who have to take handfuls of prescription pills a day. That would pretty much fry me. LOL.

I have a seizure disorder (controlled) so have taken seizure meds since I was 10....46 years. All the side effects of these meds are a pain. Right now one of the side effects is low sodium and weight gain. I actually have to increase the amount of sodium intake.

Blueberries and yogurt are an excellent choice. Actually you will find the same negative info on stevia if you search for it. The vested interests take turn sabotaging the latest popular sweetener. I only have to take one medication but I also worry about it's untoward side affects. Unfortunately, most meds are either nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic or both. I worked for a nephrologist for 3.5 years. His advice was to take as few meds as possible, including over the counter.

I have read many of the pro and con information on Splenda because it is also the sweetener I use besides stevia. Since many of the con reports mention negative impacts on the liver, I limit the amount I use out of precaution, I take a medication that can be hard on the liver and don't want to add to that. When berries are allowed on my diet....soon, I will be having my blueberries and yogurt which tends to help my sweet tooth.

I'm a registered nurse and my son is a science teacher. Most artificial sweeteners are considered safe unless you have phenylketonuria and take aspartame. There is a lot of junk science out there based on anecdotal evidence and paper studies or rat studies which don't use the scientific method or double bind studies. My opinion is to use everything in moderation and that includes stevia. I don't use a lot of artificial sweetener and when I do I usually use splenda due to the taste. I think it's a good idea to move away from processed foods as much as possible though. Dessert for me is fruit except on special occasions.

I am still on phase 1 and love my sweets. However, I try to not use sugar substitutes except stevia based on research that indicates they are bad for the liver. Sometimes I have to use them because stevia is not available. I love this diet but have concerns about the addition of all the sugar substitute products that are used for the desserts. Does anyone have dessert ideas?

LOL I did have my own personal library when I was a kid - checking out books to all my neighborhood. Yes I was a book fiend and a weird kid!

The Swiss Miss Diet Hot Cocoa is p1 friendly (no corn syrup) and is yummy mixed in greek yogurt (a little cinnamon and add a dollop of cool whip=creamy goodness). With all the crystal light flavors, you can mix things up (the green tea ones are really good). You can also use sugar free jello powder (1tbsp). When you hit p2, try the sf pudding - it thickens the yogurt even more and is great with the cool whip.

We are in agreement about Kierae. She's a treasure but don't tell her I said so as I like to tease and needle her. Someone has to do it. LOL. emoticon emoticon

Some people add Crystal Light. They make some sugar free flavored syrups with liquid splenda that are legal if you don't mind splenda but I would check the ingredients as some have carbs and some don't. I like them.

I am just wondering if anybody has ideas for phase 1 things to add to plain Greek yogurt. Yesterday I tried a pack of Truvia and a little vanilla extract, which was okay if not yummy. Today I put in a few tablespoons of sugar-free hot cocoa mix, which would have been great, except I noticed the cocoa ingredients included corn syrup solids! So much for sugar-free!

By the way- I think this is the right place to post this message. Kierae, this is such an organized bunch of threads that I think you must be a librarian (one of my people), at least at heart!

Actually it doesn't look like alot of food when you consider phase 1 is 3 meals and 3 snacks (p2 is less snacks if you don't need). I agree about adding in dairy.

Thanks Kierae! Let me explain,I have a terrible time using SP nutrition tracker,so I thought if anyone is interested in using this thread to list our menu's for the day,it would let us get feed back on what we're doing right or wrong which will help or hinder our weight loss.I think it will also give us ideas from others to vary our menu's.Hope you all think this can be fun!! I have been saving the option for the last available forum for a "good" cause and at the request of one of your teammates, it is time.

This forum will be for the tools of the "trade". Think of sharing menu planning, tips, etc. I will work on moving appropriate other threads over (we don't have the option to truly move so I have to copy/paste the info).

Diane (Dakota106) wanted to be able to make her own personal diary of food thread (versus using the nutritional tracker) and just edit it daily - which would then allow her to get feedback but also give anybody new to SB some possible menu suggestions.

Sooo there ya go!
