How awesome that you have such fresh chicken, beef and eggs! I think eggs get a bad rap.... I've been reading lately (on SP and elsewhere) that they have good UNsaturated fat as well as some saturated, the yolks have 40% of the protein (though the whites are pure protein) as well as other minerals, vitamins and micronutrients.

I couldn't eat the plain yogurt for breakfast without adding fruit and some kind of sweetener, or a very sweet fruit like cherries or pineapple. We also love Mexican food and sometimes put on a dollop of yogurt in place of sour cream. There are also low-fat and fat-free sour cream. I also couldn't stand the Greek yogurt ice cream.

We like fish tacos... corn tortillas, some grilled or sauteed fish, shredded cabbage, and a sauce made of lime juice and hot sauce or chili powder mixed with lite sour cream or mayo.

For flax seed, you want it ground into flax seed meal; the whole seeds are hard to chew and digest.

My husband and II went to Ireland about a year and a half ago. It was heavenly! All my grandparents came from there and we went to some of their hometowns.

Keep living well and healthfully.

Thanks for telling of what works for you with getting your protein in. Like I said, my amount of protein is alot less than 100 grams, so this will be something new to get into. I feel I can do it though, hopefully. Usually I'll have a bowl of honey nut cheerios or regular cheerios and some fruit and skim milk in the morning. Always with my coffee I'll our own farm whole milk with it, about 1/4 c. or so. Alot of times I'll have salad fixings with lean turkey or other and reduced fat cheese. I try to stay away from full fat cheeses because of the fat content. And that way with eggs too, but I do treat myself sometimes and then just track it and keep keeping track all day. I would prefer lowfat cottage cheese over yogurt because I have a tough time eating yogurt. I try and then it works and then I can't take it and then try a year or two later. That's how much trouble I have with it, but I keep trying because I know it's so good for us! So Greek yogurt is out. Believe me, I've tried it. Even Greek yogurt ice cream, the little single paks. No, can't do that either. Egg Beaters are so expensive and we're so used to having our own eggs, just not now but will in the future. As far as flax seed, I don't know, but I seem to have trouble digesting it. So I don't buy that at all any more.

We eat alot of chicken breasts mainly, our own beef from the dairy cows, which is so lean that if I drain anything at all, it's mainly water that doesn't turn to fat. It's very red when raw, more like vennison, so we're lucky in that dept. If we do beans, it's more like chili and Mexican dishes. I don't do anything soybean because of my low thyroid and they say to stay away from anything soy, so that includes quite a few products nowadays! There are some really good recipes that are Mexican and lowfat, especially with the corn tortillas. My family loves Mexican food. Lots of veggies steamed on the side with meals. We have an asparagus bed which I'm looking forward to with Spring coming on eventually! = ) I know that I have to watch my sodium. SP points that out every once in a while with the feedback!

So you see I have some problem when it comes to protein in yogurt, soybeans, etc. I eat alot more raw veggies than i used to. If I can munch on them instead of cookies and candy and other nasties, I'm in business, but lately it seems to be so hard to just gnaw like a bunny rabbit! If I could stomach a yogurt I'd be able to get fuller more like I should and gt the protein up. My best chance with yogurt is the Yoplait 100 cal. and it must be because of more sugar or something. I like that especially in the Summer, where I can sit on the back steps in the morning and eat it and drink my coffee! I love that! I don't care for artificial sweeteners either. I'd rather have the real thing and limit it. So far I can do that with wee amts. Adding nuts to things is an awesome idea too. When we were visiting in Ireland, every morning our relatives would have their porridge, which was mixed up the night before. Steel cut oatmeal and ground walnuts and other nuts and it was delicious!

So this gives pretty much the gist of it. It's fun to get our heads together and find out what works for others. Sometimes I'll make my family something more fattening and I'll have a Lean Cuisine or something that I can count and with lower sodium and I feel good and so do they! You are doing so good and I'm so proud of you! Keep up the good work and I'll try to do alot better!!

For protein...
I have the same breakfast most days... Plain 0%-fat Greek yogurt (twice the protein of regular yogurt) with 1/2 cup of berries, 1 tsp. flax seed meal, a packet of sweetener, and topped with 1 T. of almonds or walnuts. That's 20 grams of protein in 174 calories.

I have 1.5 cups of skim milk in coffee in the morning and decaf tea in the evening.

Big fan of Egg Beaters or other egg substitute... omelets with veggies such as bell peppers and onion, with reduced-fat cheese.

Other than that, a lot of chicken, 99% lean ground turkey, fish, lean beef (sirloin or 94% lean ground beef, beans, tofu, TVP (textured vegetable protein, use like ground beef) and some protein bars for snacks. I just learned that 1/2 cup shelled edamame (soybeans) has like 8 grams of protein. Special K and Kashi have cereals with "high protein" but I find I get hungry faster after cereal than my Greek yogurt. I was eating cottage cheese until a friend pointed out how much sodium is in it.

I try to keep carbs to 100 - 150 g/day and fat to 20 - 40 g. I need low-cal veggies to stay full without going over on carbs/calories... salads, cucumber, radishes, etc.

What's working for you, SEATTLE58 and all?

Wow Janis, thanks for all you wrote! That really helps me to have more confidence that this Humira might start working afterall! I've really gotten down about it! That's quite something about eating more protein and makes sense. Can I ask how you get 100 grams in a day? Without going over your calories? I know that I can eat alot more. I'm doing about 30-50 per day. That could be why I have the munchies in the evening. We have our main meal at noon, with being farmers and then just eat lightly at night because of the milking and we've never like eating alot before milking and then not anything heavy after milking, which can get to be 7:30 or 8:00 or later! I don't do chores anymroe because of my RA as I'm sure you can see why! Wow, 3 month trial for the Humira. I can do that! Thanks again for the uplifter! emoticon emoticon

I've been on Humira for about 4 months, and it took 3 months to "kick in." After 1 month (2 injections) I tried stopping prednisone and Aleve, and was miserable, lots of pain. After 3 months I stopped them again and was no worse for it. First time in the 3 years I've had this good a result... I tried about every other med before going to the biologic. So hang in there if you haven't given them a 3-month trial.

I've read two places (one the Arthritis Foundation) that (active) RA causes loss of muscle mass... I guess from the inflammation in the body. That will reduce your need for calories slightly. So any little thing you can do to add muscle may help your weight loss efforts. Also eating lots of protein will help you not to lose muscle as you lose weight. It also helps you to stay full for hours. (This per m bariatric doc.) She has me on 100 grams of protein a day.

Best wishes for your well-being and success!

Oh Tiny, I hope that you get the "kicked in" feeling soon, like I can too, one day. Soon for us, we'll say! Today I'm feeling some better. I don't know if it's kicked in a tad or if that is possible or if it's just because I didn't paint the barn yesterday!! HA! I know that i cleaned house yesterday but not strenuously. We'll see as the days continue and when it does kick in I'llbe shouting it from the rooftops and that means here first!

Hugs to you, Karen

Karen, I'm in the same situation - doesn't seem like Enbrel has worked for me yet. Also, I'm noticing some things that seem sorta negative to me - increased pain in joints, and especially in my legs in general (which hasn't been a problem until now), fatigue and just a simple "I feel lousy" kind of feeling. AND weight gain on top of all that! Grrrrrr! emoticon

Sounds interesting. To me, I really feel that the biologics are the culprit with causing us to be hungry alot like the Prednisone. I can't begin to think of taking less when the Enbrel or the Humira haven't worked for me yet, with them being every one week or two weeks. Well, hopefully the Humira will start soon! Let us know what you dr. says, Ann!!

Ann - One less Enbrel injection per month is a good idea! Let us know what the doc says about that - and how it works for you.

Blessings!

Did some research last nite on computer, many complain about weight gain on Enbrel, I printed out my weight chart to show dr. I have gained 10 lbs. in one year of being on Enbrel.
I'm going to ask if I can space shots to every 10 days, one less a month to see if that moves weight. Also, I want my matabalisum checked out. Today, I'm am really watching everything I eat. Will do more veg and fruits.

Thanks for your responses gals, and all I can say is..............we're going to overcome these extra pounds! We're going to show ourselves that we can lose weight on these biologics! I know that I've tended to eat not-so-healthy foods and that's enough of that! I will be reaching for healthier foods, just like I prepped some fresh strawberries this morning and also some fresh radishes. I have celery that I can easily prep along with carrots, so there's no excuse for me. emoticon We won't be going around and around the same pounds, but we will get them off plus what it takes to be to goal. I know I have quite aways to go now, but I won't let that deter me. We can do it with all our good buddies here on SP! emoticon emoticon

Karen,

I feel your pain - literally! I keep thinking, like you, that when it's warm enough to get outside, I can do some serious moving. However, here in Arkansas, we're apparently still in the middle of winter, even though the First Day of Spring was last week! Today it's 30 degrees. It's been cold and raining for the last 5-6 days, some of the rain was sleet! Enough!!! All this staying in because of the cold just makes me want to eat!!

But, yes, emoticon

Blessings to you in your journey!

I had noticed that you stopped posting your weight in the forum - I'm glad to know this might be the reason. You were missed!

I didn't have to take either one of these medications, so I'm no help there. But I would think that any kind of biologic would mess with either your metabolism and/or your hormones; either of those would have a significant effect on weight loss.

Hope you are able to figure out what's going on -

Oh thank you so much for letting me feel that I'm not alone! I know also that i can't be without a biologic because I'm a moderate to severe case too. My hands and wrists and feet hurt so much that it's hard to do anything really but I can still bike, but I can't do that all day! Maybe that's the answer! ha! I'm 13# up from my lowest here on SP! I can't take this anymore! I guess all we can do it keep crossing our fingers and one of these biologics has to start working and the hopefully, we can really move enough to get the weight off! Good luck to us! We need it huh?! Hang in there, Tiny, we can do it!! Spring and Summer's coming! Ya!

I've been on Enbrel for 5 weeks. After one week, I started to gain about a pound a day! I immediately tried to get this under control (by doing all the same things you mentioned) and I'm not gaining, but NOT losing either. I go back & forth, lose a pound, then gain it back the next day. I am very frustrated - enough that I'm thinking of discontinuing the Enbrel. It's also not giving me any relief that is noticeable to me. It's my belief that medications are huge "causers" of weight gain. I don't know what we're supposed to do because we do need something for treatment of our diseases. My RA is very severe and very progressed, but I CANNOT TOLERATE ANY MORE WEIGHT GAIN!! emoticon

I wish you well with your treatments. emoticon

I've been putting on weight with being on Enbrel and now Humira. Can anyone else say that that has happened to them? Although I do feel that I want to eat all the time and i never had this much of an appetite before the biologics, with even being on Prednisone. Can it be that I have more time on my hands too with not being able to do alot because of the pain? I try to eat healthy with lean protein, freggies, my water and I still feel hungry. All the time. I exercise all I can on my recumbent bike, about 35-40 min/day. I'm getting frustrated with these biologics not wanting to work with me and are hoping that once Spring comes, Humira will have kicked in too and I can really walk more and because of being able to do that, I'll be able to lose weight once again! I guess I just needed to vent.....once again! Life is not very easy at this point in my life!
