Yummy, I love Starbucks little lunch packages. I've grabbed them in a pinch my myself. My lunch was also ala Starbuck's but in the form of a liquid lunch, a light caramel frappucino.

The bento I had packed for lunch was my picnic football game dinner.

Chicken lettuce wraps with, sticky rice, pickled vegetables, crispy onions, and some hoisin sauce. Pics on Sparkpage.

Today's bento (and workout) was provided by the good people at the Starbucks corporation. The workout was walking to and from and the bento was one of their bistro boxes which included "Cage-free egg, white Cheddar cheese, honey peanut butter spread, multigrain muesli bread, apples and grapes".

It's okay Mirdreams, I understand. I don't usually bento when I know I will be staying at home.

Today was not quite a bento since I did stay at home but if I did go to work I would have packed it anyway. At both my jobs there is a hot water kettle so I can make noodles at any time!

Today was Beef Pho with meatballs and lots of herbs! Pics on my sparkpage.

No I haven't been bento-ing :( I am working from home these days so I can't quite justify making cute lunch to eat sitting at the kitchen table. But I still love seeing everyone's!

Okay, where are my fellow bento-ers, Mirdreams, Dlynnrn, Nikori, Ckentfield? I know you guys make bentos. I'd love to hear and see what you guys are up too.

Alright, I'll go again.

Today was an easy bento since I didn't feel like cooking yesterday.
Top tier is a ham and cheese sandwich on toasted whole wheat bread with some mustard, lettuce, and tomato. A couple of homemade dill pickles.

In the bottom tier is an Apple and pear from our trees with a packet of cashew butter for dipping and some special k chips. Pictures on my sparkpage

Kids are back to school and bento making is back in progress. Today for my DD I packed a typical PB&J with the crust removed and squished to make a pita, some dried pears, crackers, and cheese.

For myself I packed leftover pasta with a vegetable ragu, cherry tomatoes, basil in the top portion and then a cucmber salad in the bottom portion. Pictures of my lunch are on my sparkpage.

Just recieved a new bento and had to try it out. Round stainless steele, double decker. Cute lime green handle. In the bottom was udon noodles with beef meatballs with some hosin, fishsuace, and sirracha. Top portion was pickled vegetables and leafy herbs, cilantro, thai basil, and mint. Would have loved some bean sprouts. All came in at 400 calories even. Pictures on my spark page.

Not exactly a bento today but I did make myself a real lunch for the first time in ages. Really nice no preservative multigrain bread, low fat mayo, heirloom tomato sliced paper thin, smoked low fat turkey, and Boston lettuce sandwich with a 100 cal pack of crunchy cheetos (LOVE THEM), a handful of frozen blue berries, and a half sour pickle. It's a lot of lunch for under 500 calories! And if I'd needed to bring it anywhere it would have looked colorful in my box.

Usually I'll cut up the remaining bread, spice it, and toast it in the oven -- they make great croutons, and since I use whole grain bread, they're healthier (and cheaper) than the store-bought variety. However, if I'm not feeling up to making croutons, they end up as food for the ducks :)

Ooo, if you're just getting started, you might want to get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZNU
TCG/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=AFNCDIN
NV5Y7Q

It was ages before I found my set, and it opens a whole new realm of possibilities. They're designed for gumpaste or fondant, but I use mine for bento design. You can make flowers with any kind of sliced cheese, radishes, carrots -- anything, really, with a little work. I have a veggie cutter that can make really thin slices of most root vegetables, rendering them easily shaped by the cutters. Once my new box comes in, I'll definitely post pictures. It may be a while, though, as it's coming from Japan.

Salmon cakes sound delicious! It looks like this team is just you and me for the time being. Maybe we should start a new recipe thread?

I don't have a box yet... but I am getting more creative with making my meal appealing. In the past I would just throw it all together. Now I try to make it look nice/appealing. I like how the size of the box helps with caloric intake. I am very excited about this, my husband just rolls his eyes. I am the top bidder on a BIG on on ebay. But I am hoping to fit all I need for a 12 hour work sift (if it doesn't work out there is a cafeteria on site so no biggy). I want to try making tuna cakes but use salmon instead. And maybe falata's. That would go nice with some hummus. I will see what I can get going. Did you see how on the huddle you can post photos? Don't know if you say that yet or not. Looking forward to seeing your box and your creations. Oh and I have heard the same about quino. I eat Bare Oats, they have an apple cinnamon that has 6 grains in it (instead of just oatmeal), makes it nice and chewy. Give it a try.

Hm, it looks like it's not on the site anymore. When it comes in, I'll have to take pictures.

My old bento box was a total of 350ml -- 200ml on the top, 150ml on the bottom. It's nice for healthy snacks when I'm out and about, but it's a little too small for lunch. My new box is a total of 510ml (300 top/210 bottom).

I try to keep away from the simple carbs like white rice (unless it's in sushi), so I tend to go for either brown rice or vegetables as the base of my lunch. I'm considering trying quinoa as a rice replacement due to its high vitamins and minerals; I've heard that if prepared properly, you can even make onigiri with it! It'll be a challenge, but I might try it in the near future.

Oh, oh. Your web page is dead. Can you try again. What size (ml) did you have before and what are you moving into? Just curious. Do you normally pack a lot of veggies or stick to the traditional that most is carbs (ie rice or noodles)?

That looks delicious, Rebazoe!

I just ordered a new bento box; my old one was a mini-style and I always ended up eating something else in addition to my lunch because I'd still be hungry. Here's my new box; once I get it in, I'll try to post some pictures of my creations!

Guess I'll jump in here.
I love Bento! I have a whole file in my bookmarks labeled "Bento porn" emoticon
with links to all things bento.
I didn't make a bento lunch today, as my hubby and I spent the day out and about and then went out to eat.
I do try to make them to take to work with me Mon-Fri. I'm not the best at planning ahead tho.

Anyway, Friday's bento was turkey with lettuce and low fat mayo on a plain bagel, with strips of raw carrot, zuchini, cherry tomatoes and radishes with low fat thousand island dressing as a dip. I also included strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and banana slices.
The zuchini, blackberries and cherry tomatoes were from my garden. Yum! emoticon

Salmon and cucumber onigiri, sweet onion and pepper confit, curried kidney beans and veggies, spinach tamagoyaki and some grape tomatoes and baby carrots as filler.

After finally finding all the pieces of my bento box last night (and using the blog on my SparkPage to create a photo journal about it, which is just the kind of thing that happens when I stay up all night), I made my first bento in years today.

It wasn't anything too fancy, just my normal lunch (peanut butter and banana in a whole wheat tortilla + the other half of the banana) + some carrot sticks to balance it out and add some color. I cut the tortilla wrap and the rest of the banana into slices to add to the presentation and so that I could eat them with chopsticks.

Like I said, nothing fancy, but I did take a pic that I'll probably put up on my blog later. I still need to join the flickr group...

Sesame noodles (w/ veggies), spicy tofu, and hijiki salad.

The sesame noodles and spicy tofu are leftovers from last night, the hijiki I made earlier this week (and next time, I need to cut that recipe in half because I've eaten some every day this week and I still have a bunch in the fridge).

Read and read and read this Book of Five Rings, and step and step and step on this dojo floor.

My bento won't actually be in a bento box but rather a plastic container I found with little dividers and it's very American style.

I have a spinach salad with cucumbers and I put the tomato in a snack bag to keep it from getting soggy, 6 garlic triscuits, garlic yogurt cheese squares and cherries. I also sliced some roast beef rolled to look pretty on top of the salad.

I am kicking myself for not purchasing some bento boxes while I was living in Japan, but oh well.

We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be. C.S. Lewis

I just got back into bentoing again after multiple hospital stays in the space of a couple of months (loooooon story, let's just say I have TERRIBLE luck), but I was in a rush today so I just mixed up a walnut and strawberry spinach salad, a couple pieces of tamagoyaki, cut up a hot dog into octopus shapes, and called it good. And it was DELICIOUS! So colorful, too. This might be my new default "I'm in a rush and don't have time to cook" bento.

What a great mom to give your little one such a healthy and fun lunch. Yay! Wish our local stores carried mini pitas. There are only a few I haven't checked yet but no luck so far. I made a batch from scratch but they were too much work to do again.

Not much bento for me this week, my guys have been home sick with a bad bug (not swinish!) and then I was home with a migraine. Today's bento was so ugly I didn't even bother to get out the camera. Tasty tho...a mix of 0% Fage yogurt, fresh strawberries and some Kashi Go Lean to add for crunch. No matter how I tried, I just couldn't muster up any 'kawai' out of it. Your daughter's box sounds very cute!

Yesterday I made my little one a bento for her lunch. I used a cute dollar store cat box. She's a bit fussy and new to the bento idea so I'm being careful to introduce new foods slowly. She got mini-pitas stuffed with ham, apple slices, cherry tomatoes and baby bel cheese. She ate it all except for one cherry tomato that she declared "too bumpy"

Hi! If I could figure out how to easily copy my bento blog onto my Sparkpage I could have it here too. Alas, I am too CI for that. But today's bento and picture is there and not here. pouty...

It was a breakfast bento (most of them are) and really tasty. Barley onigiri, kiwi, strawberries, cantaloupe and quiche. Nom!

I blogged about my bento today, with a photo too!

It had two zucchini quiche muffins (recipe from SP, also linked in the blog)
Grapes
Carrots

Then I added a little carrot heart on top, all packed up in an elephant box.

I'm a cat, I'm a kitty cat...
and I meow meow meow, and I meow meow meow!

Today's bento comes with no picture link because my silly husband went out of town on a business trip for 3 days and took the camera with him! Argh!

Anyway...it's actually my first vegetarian (though lacto-ovo) bentos:

Lunch bento:
Top tier: Homemade multigrain curry tortilla chips and garlic-artichoke hummus, with grape tomatoes, edamame and clover sprouts for filler.
Bottom tier: More grape tomatoes and edamame, string cheese, and sliced peaches.
Lid: Marble Pocky

Breakfast bento:
Top tier: Cherry YoPlus yogurt, low-sugar dried pineapple
Bottom tier: Nature's Path Optimum rebound cereal
Side cup of Silk Light vanilla soy milk for the cereal

"This is the beginning of a new day.
I have been given this day to use as I will.
I can waste it or I can use it for good.
What I do today is important because
I am exchanging a day of my life for it.
When tomorrow comes this day will be gone forever,
Leaving in its place something that I have traded for it.
I want it to be gain, not loss; good, not evil; success, not failure;
In order that I shall not regret the price that I paid for it."

Yesterday's bento was just some leftover chicken stir-fry and a pack of Pocky...boring!

Today's is a bit more exciting. I did a redeaux on the autumn theme, this time with more traditional Japanese fare, so it should be yummy.

Top tier:
Rice with furikake, egg, and nori "leaves", and tamagoyaki

Bottom tier:
Seaweed salad, crab sticks, and black plum

Pocky in the lid

I also did a breakfast bento with apple cinnamon flaxseed waffles, leftover tamagoyaki, and yogurt

My mother and I went shopping yesterday and I picked up a couple of little things for my bento. The best find of all was $1 mini nori punches! They're actually paper punches for scrapbooking, but work just as well on nori. I found them at Michael's in their $1 bin. They had dragonflies, flowers, teddy bears, seahorses, and footprints. So cute!

Anyway...on to the bento:
~Rice cubes with embossed hearts sprinkled with furikake and decorated with little nori dragonflies and flowers.
~Boneless teriyaki chicken wings
~Edamame, clover sprouts and grape tomatoes for filler
~Low-sugar dried pineapple rings in the lid

I also made a breakfast bento with waffles, strawberries and yogurt. Yum!

Pics of the lunch bento are on my blog (I switched to LiveJournal): ravensbentos.livejournal.com

My order arrived on Thursday so I was able to pack my lunch in an actual bento box on Friday. My bento had edamame, a fish-shaped hard boiled egg, and heart, star and bear-shaped onigiri with wasabi salmon filling.

I think Monday's will be pretty similar.

I'm making my first bento tonight/tomorrow. It's going to have left-over Thai Noodles with chicken and lots of veggies, multi-colored grapes, cantaloup slices cut into heart-shapes, and some fresh baby carrots and broccoli flourets.

It's a small attempt, and I don't have a bento box yet... it's a 2-section lunch container I found at the dollar store with a fork and knife that click into the lid. I figured it will work for starters.

As for making it "tonight/tomorrow"... I'm starting it tonight and finishing it tomorrow after I hit the grocery store. Silly me, came home to make my grocery list... and accidentally turned on the computer. List is done... but that's it.

My Ichiban Kan order came in yesterday, so I have lots of bento goodies to play with now!

Today's bento is in my new Natural Lunch 2-tier oval box. I went back to more traditional bento fare because yesterday's creation didn't turn out too well.

~Leftover rice, stir-fried with veggies and edamame, and covered with an omelet.
~Shrimp gyoza
~half of a red plum
I also rolled the leftover trimmings from the omelet into little mini-tamagoykis and tucked mini-bottles of soy sauce and ketchup in what tiny bit of empty space there was. It's amazing how much you can cram into these tiny boxes!

The pic of this is on my blog, as usual.

What's not pictured is the breakfast bento I whipped up this morning on a whim. It's in my medium Liberty "men's" box.

~Kashi GoLean Crunch
~Half of a peach
Not in the bento is my cup of yogurt and a little TGIFriday's takeout kiddie cup of vanilla soy milk for the cereal.

This is so much fun!

I made my first bento today. My bento boxes hadn't arrived yet (I have them now, though!), so I purchased a lock & lock container and some silicone muffin cups. I figured out start out simple, so I made sushi rice with furikake, cucumber salad, and wasabi salmon. It was a lot more filling than I thought it would be.

My Ichiban Kan order arrived today, so for tomorrow's bento I plan to try out some of my new toys.

Simple bento today for me. Just some brown rice and nikujaga with a snack bento on the side of fresh blueberries and yogurt. I'm trying to wrap up my short fiction to turn in tonight, so I needed grab and go foods.

DD's bento is pretty simple, but she likes it too. Chicken teriyaki (already cooked and defrosted), brown rice, baby carrots with a dip cup of ranch dressing and grapes. I packed her a babybel and some yogurt covered raisins for her snack today. (Poor kiddo, lunch at school isn't until 1pm, so they told the kids to bring in a mid-morning snack. She gets so hungry!)

No bento today because I was busy running around, getting ANG stuff done. But I have made my bento for tomorrow already. I picked up some cute autumn-related food goodies at Wal-Mart yesterday...leaf mini-cookie cutters and picks, plus some red silicone cups. I couldn't wait to use them so I put together a fall-themed Italian bento.

~Whole wheat angel hair pasta with "leaves" made of cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, and an "acorn" made of an olive
~More olives and sun-dried tomatoes marinated in Williams-Sonoma Tuscan Grilling Drizzle to mix with the pasta
~Fruit skewers with black plum, pineapple, and green grapes

Just finished today's. Aside from a little messy it was mostly a success for me.

I got some of those little tofu pockets (inari?) at the market for the family it had tabouleh in the bottom and either thai flavored canned tuna or the saboro that I made the other day. Mine was mahogany/black rice and saboro. They were kind of damp but pretty good. I like the idea of a "pocket" that isn't high in carbs. Then there were the ubiquitous carrots and snow peas plus some jicama. And a cupcake wrapper full of fresh blackberries from the back yard. They were very ripe and yummy.

I think I need a smaller box. This one is about 8" long - it was cheap but I think smaller would do.

That does sound tasty!

My bento today was the result of a little adventure. I decided I needed to buck up and really learn how to quarter and debone chicken myself. Seriously. So, I chopped up my little chicken this weekend, cooked the breasts for dinner last night, pan-fried the legs and wings for my daughter's lunch, then made chicken teriyaki with the thighs.

So today was the teriyaki, brown rice with seaweed gomaiso, steamed broccoli and Maki's vegetable gratin (minus the Italian flavored stuff). So tasty!

Bento # 2. Carrots and cukes and snow peas. A ground beef dish that I got off the "just hungry" website. I was making it with 3/4 of the meat I had at hand and going to make hamburgers with the rest, but liked it enough that I cooked the rest, added some guy lan and spinach and had it for dinner last night and in our boxes today. Also made the rice ball things with sticky rice from a recipe there. They are too strongly flavored. I'll probably do it again, but make an adaptation.

Still, it counts as taking care of me, my blood sugar and lunch.

Well, it took me a while to decide, but I finally decided on my bento for the day. It's a little heavier than what I'd normally eat, but I have class tonight, and will only have a snack bento of fruit, yogurt and nuts to eat during the 10 minute break.

A filet of sole stuffed with crab stuffing, rosemary and garlic brown rice, summer squash gratin and a mini blueberry cobbler. So yummy!

Oh dear - it's one I purchased at a farmer's market, seems like cucumber chunks, onion chunks and a vinaigrette and herbs. Epicurious.com is my fave place for recipes. They might have some use the cukes ideas.

Those lunches sound fantastic! What kind of cucumber salad is it? I'd love to find new ways to use up the last of the cukes from my garden.

Brand new to the team, brand new to bentos and, seemingly, brand new to the concept of lunches. But I'm jumping in anyways.

One of my newest goals is to eat lunch - really - regularly at work. I need to. I'm a type II diabetic on medication and if I don't eat lunch I wind up in trouble. Then I have to make up for it in ways that are unhealthy.

So, bentos seemed like a good concept. Then my 16 yo daughter jumped on the bandwagon. I did some research and found 3 boxes at an asian market. They aren't gorgeous, but they also weren't expensive.

So tomorrow's lunches look like this. For my husband and I we have mahogany and black rice, left over chicken, jicama in a balsamic vinegrette, some cucumber salad in a little cup, some carrots, a hot pepper for him, but none for me, and a few blueberries and cherries.

Daughter's has the rice and chicken, some bell pepper in one cup and some roasted eggplant in another, plus a pita bread and the blueberries & cherries.

All have a small asian confection tucked in as well.

Actually these seem like a lot of food, but I won't be home til late tomorrow so I may eat some of it at the studio.

Today's bento is something special. It's a picnic bento for me and my honey. And it's one of the two I'm making this week for the tapas challenge. We're having seafood stuffed cherry tomatoes, garlic sauteed mushrooms, cod and capers croquettes, melon cubes, Spanish olives, deviled eggs and crusty bread on the side. I can't wait to eat it!
