Welcome Barb! This should be the biggest team on Spark and get bigger over time.

I just joined this team and I have to say the name (long or not) is what caught my eye and interest. I reached goal not too long ago and just couldn't find the right "fit" from other teams. For now I think this team is where I would like to be.

I like your thinking behind the terminology. I do believe you are correct that many think of maintenance as another level of weight loss etc. When put that way, it gives me a new perspective on the process. emoticon

How about "Losers, keepers" - a pun from the phrase Finders, keepers.
Also, "From goal weight to lifetime weight".
As I've stated before, I believe that the word "maintenance" is a little tricky because people who are new to weight loss subjects are sometimes led to believe that maintenance is another period in the weight loss process and not something that you will have to learn to do for the rest of your life. On the other hand, it's a widely used term and people could easily find the team among thousands of others. We just have to find a way to stress the difference.

I like "Close to goal" because it implies that we have reached goal weight but are still trying to change body composition. It also would encourage people to join who need to start thinking about maintenance.

We have had a lot of visibility on Spark lately with the current (new) name so changing it now would be counterproductive.

I have not been a team member for long but at maintenance for some time. I finally found this team because of the name description. The title described how the team would fit my needs for a community. If it read something else I probably would not have noticed it distinct difference/knowledge it offered. The members here offer A Lot of experience that I have not seen on other teams.

My vote- keep the name.

I like these two names the best so far:
At (or Near) Goal and Maintaining
Maintenance: Transition and Long Term

However, I do see 4A's point about wanting to continue to be searchable.

For me personally, this team has been a GREAT help. Maintaining really is a whole different animal.

I'd hate to see the team become a "catch-all", but I am also glad to see people who are transitioning/losing coming in to get a head start. I am also glad to see folks staying on the team to try to *stop* that regain cycle. After all, modern humans have figured out ways to lose weight; it is the maintaining that isn't happening.

I know I'm neither at goal or as near as most pondering the transition, but I actually liked one of MOBYCARP's suggestions:

Maintenance: Transition and Long Term

I joined this team for hints, tips, and success stories on :

1) Making the transition as smooth as possible from running a calorie deficit to running close to a zero balance (averaging out surplus and deficit between food and fitness).

2) Figuring out the long-term lifestyle once a successful transition has been made.

I know that past the weight goal is the body composition goal. But neither has a cold hard absolute number, so I'm also interested in seeing the sorts of goals that keep people maintaining without making food and fitness an obsession or the overwhelming focus of their life.

Indeed, I personally will be using the scale. It works well for me!

I've occasionally heard people claim using other methods to check their status, and if it works for them, then I'm happy for them. I can't imagine either, but there it is. LOL

4AHealthy, I think of goal as a number with a range, too. Earlier here someone had mentioned that some people measure their goal by body fat percentage or dress size. I can't imagine but if it works for them, who am I to question. I still step on that scale first thing every morning, have for most of my life. Before loss it caused me to panic and eat. Now it just tells me what my day should look like foodwise. The plans and programs I know about all use weight as a goal because it's easily and cheaply measured. I'm all about easy and cheap. And effective.

@NELLJONES

I don't think the common concept of a goal as a weight range is going away. It's just too functional and useful for too many people. And I certainly plan on continuing the maintenance challenges, which are completely scale-based - they work too well for ME to drop them!
emoticon

I'm enjoying reading everyone's thoughts about the team and its identity. Although I think the scale is an important tool, I think there can be a place for other definitions of goals and maintenance here, too. RUSSLANE and HOUNDLOVER1 both have run non-scale challenges in the past.

@ MOBYCARP
I got a giggle from the "Maintainers and Wannabees" title. Thanks. Laughter is always a welcome addition to my day!

I don't have any brilliant ideas for a shorter team name, but the discussion has got me thinking.

I joined SP at 196.6 pounds, with an initial goal of 175. I got automagically slotted into the team "50+ members with 10-24 pounds to lose." That was a fine team for where I started; then I lost weight to where the title didn't fit; then I reached goal and the idea of trying to lose more weight didn't fit.

Today, more than a year later, some of the same people are still posting in that team. I don't know whether they haven't lost the weight they want to lose, or they simply found a community that they're comfortable in and want to keep a stable online community. The idea of teams targeted to how much the members need/want to lose doesn't address the question of what people do when they succeed beyond the lower limit of the team's mission.

This team is a bit different. It's focused on maintenance, which is a different puzzle than weight loss. I like the way the current name, as long and clumsy as it is, describes this team's mission: We're here to support each other in maintaining a goal weight, and in transitioning from weight loss mode to maintenance mode. Unlike the X Pounds to Lose type of teams, this team has a mission that is conducive to building a stable, longer term community. Any revised name should capture the essence of that mission.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a short name that captures that essence. Everything I think of is just as clumsy as the current name, without the advantage of matching all those existing message board posts:

Maintenance: Transition and Long Term
Stop Losing, Start Maintaining
Finding Your Goal and Maintaining It
Maintainers and Wannabe Maintainers

I don't expect any of the above to make the cut; I'm not terribly happy with any of them myself. I hope that any changed name we settle on does somehow capture the essence of this team's mission: We're here to support each other in maintaining a stable weight for the long term, and to help people manage the transition from losing weight to keeping it off.

I'm happy as long as the people on the board have a primary interest in weight control, however it's measured. There are people out there who have never dealt with crazy, inappropriate food cravings, but have, say, Crohn's disease. They might find Spark to keep track of gluten, but don't know what it's like to wrestle with weight. Their goals are different than ours, though for them it could certainly be described as seeking a "healthy lifestyle".

Thanks for the input! I agree the current name is long.

We added the "Transition to Maintenance" part recently so people who are not exactly "at goal" would feel welcome to participate - for all of the reasons many of you have suggested.

The reason we need to keep the "At Goal & Maintaining" part is that many people on this site have referred to this team as words (without a link) in blogs and message boards and if we take that part away then people reading the old name somewhere will have no way of finding the team.

Eventually if maintenance is brought to a more prominent spot on the site I think it'll be OK to change our name, but until then or at least until we've finished figuring out who we are as a team relative to the rest of the site, I think it would be safest to keep the name clunky but descriptive.

As far as the philosophical discussion about what exactly we are maintaining, and what our "goal" is, the team name does not actually refer to a weight. I think it would perfectly legitimate for someone to argue that his or her personal "goal" is a percent body fat, binge-free behavior, fitting into a favorite item of clothing, or any number of non-scale-related things.

The scale is a common and convenient shorthand way of monitoring, but it's certainly not the only one. In fact, I think it might be a neat idea for someone to start a thread about that, and ask others what they define as their "goal" and how they keep track of whether they're sticking to it.

Personally, I think the team name should stick with something that celebrates the achievement of reaching goal! I think we've had people coming in as they neared Goal for a long time; not sure that our name needs to reflect that it's OK to do that ...but we should include something in the team description that we are full of resources for those nearing goal and wondering about how to maintain. I agree that the current one is long, and the new suggestion seems vague.

I like the At Goal (or almost) and Maintenance :) But while our name is clunky, I do like it better than the healthy maintaining, as that doesn't necessarily maintenance. All of spark is about being healthy.

Carol yeah some times our goal changes we have had a few members who felt like they need to leave the team because they were over by 10 or more pounds and at least now will feel more comfortable here and work on losing the weight they gained or just had a change in goal weight

I too think the name is long, but it perfectly describes the team. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the idea behind all of Spark, and doesn't have the "I made it! " feeling that "at goal" has. Maybe just rearranging words to " At goal (or almost) and maintaining " is a bit simpler.

Success consists of a series of little daily victories.

I like the new name yes it is a bit long winded With the addition the team will grow Before it felt like you had to be at your goal weight to be part of the team now you are close enough to goal weight to start to think about how you will maintain once you get there and now in my case I have a new goal weight I felt like I had ot leave the team in order to work towards that new goal now I can just work my way to the new goal and not feel like I'm cheating

I liked "At Goal and Maintaining" just fine. It seems like we could add the transition and healthy living aspects to the description portion to make things clear.
I think we stand the best chance of growing and encouraging our membership if we stay active in the larger community here and spread the word through blogging, etc.
Just my two cents!

I don't consider "healthy lifestyle" to be a final goal, but one I started when I first walked through the doors of WW and started losing weight. Goal issues only came about when I got to goal, and was surprised that I didn't automatically revert to the "normal" I always thought that number would bestow. The team name only became unwieldy when the second half was added a couple of weeks ago, yet it was necessary for people to find us. "Living a healthy lifestyle" means different things to different people, and may not include a weight component at all. And maintaining that weight is why I'm here. What I want from Spark is a community of people who need to maintain a weight that was work to achieve. I think the long name will achieve its purpose in letting people find us. Most of us just speak of maintaining our goal.

Well, it sounds better, that's for sure. But the old name is more descriptive of what the team really is. The new name is vague, imprecise, ambiguous, unclear, hazy, indefinite, and some other terms under "nebulous" in my thesaurus. The old name is clunky, but makes it easier for people looking for a team like this one to find us.
So. . . it depends on what we want in a name--form or function.

What describes everyone's goal here accurately:
"Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle"
It doesn't matter if you are at goal, trying to lose, in a plateau, trying to maintain, the bottom line is to be consistent with living a healthy lifestyle -it applies to everyone at any stage of life, that is the ultimate goal, and if you follow it consistently only good things will happen.
What say you? Doesn't that sum it up?
