It looks like +/- 5 lbs is the minimum range the ticker is designed to show.

For someone in the 150-200 lb range that does roughly translate to +/- 3% which is the best suggested working range I've seen in the scientific literature.

The ticker shows a wider range if you go above or below 5 lbs from your stated central weight. I suspect the male tickers you're seeing are more than +/- 5 lbs from their designated central weight.

I very nervously switched from the weight loss to maintenance ticker. I'm only a week or so into maintenance. One thing I had a question on was whether or not you had to have the +- 5 lb spread, but I see from checking others' tickers, that all women have 5 lbs and men seem to have 10lb . I had wanted to have +-3 lbs.

I'm with you, SLENDERELLA61 . It was hard to give up that visual.

I just switched to a maintenance ticker. It was hard to give up that visual of losing 80+ pounds, but I think I'm going to love it. Know it is what matters now.

I just discovered this thread. Yay! - a maintenance ticker - just updated.

Regarding the subject of quitting the evil weed: I did it with the help of hypnosis in 1984. I still smoke in my dreams sometimes. It was a very difficult thing NOT to go back to it, but I must say I no longer crave nicotine at all. I remember well going up to 141 pounds when I quit. I'd like to be back down there now!

It's a short-term gain that occurs as a direct result to quitting. The trick is to substitute carrot and celery sticks or gum for the sweets you might otherwise tell yourself you 'deserve'. I took brewer's yeast, as suggested by the person who conducted the smoking cessation class. She explained it provides zinc, which a shortage of gives you the craving for sweets when you quit smoking. That's how I remember it, 28 years later. It is not an easy thing to do, but you CAN do it. It is a matter of making that decision and following through, with the help and support of friends, your doctor, Sparkpeople, etc. I wish you not luck, but courage and strength to get you through.

Probably it is a matter of degrees, but I felt it was an important distinction. It is HARD to quit smoking, I'd say harder than losing weight, honestly. The other thing is that feeling limited by smoking was the main driver behind my quitting. I was determined to run a 10K in under 60 minutes. Smoking was a significant hurdle. If I said "well, I can't train/lift/run/walk briskly until I quit smoking so f' it, I quit exercising", that would have sucked.

And dammit, yes, it is HARD to gain muscle, so you'll want every little edge. So quit smoking, but don't quit lifting! emoticon

Ok, I see your point, maybe it's a matter of degrees. And also it would depend how much someone is smoking and what there overall fitness level is.
I was not suggesting that smokers shouldn't bother to exercise at all.
Another thing to keep in mind is that it takes much more effort for women to build significant muscle than for men. I'd have to work out pretty hard to gain visible muscle even without ever having smoked. emoticon

You said:

"I understand the desire for tightening, muscles, strength. It's not likely to happen as long as you smoke."

I call bollocks. A person who smokes is not incapacitated. Do they have decreased aerobic capacity, sure, but they still improve just like anyone else, they're simply limiting their maximum. It does not take a tremendous amount of aerobic capacity to develop strength.

Again, I'm not saying smoking is smart or should be overlooked, but to suggest that a person would not likely progress towards their goals while smoking is incorrect. I suggest this person do BOTH (if possible, and the doc OKs it).

@BREWMASTERBILL,
Any hard physical workout, aerobic or anaerobic, will require the ability to take in a lot of oxygen and I would assume that being an active smoker will reduce anyone's ability to take in oxygen significantly, am I missing something?

A few comments to this. First, stopping smoking does not automatically equal weight gain. If you're tracking your calories, you should not have an issue. Most people gain weight because they replace smoking with eating. If you can consciously avoid that, I believe you'll be fine. Second, I disagree that smoking somehow impairs the ability to gain muscle. It will impede aerobic capacity, sure, but it does not prevent you from picking up weights. But even with that, we all know it's a good idea to quit, even if you find yourself gaining a few pounds, it's well worth it.

I'm with HOUNDLOVER on this one. Please consider cutting back if not stopping smoking entirely - I completely understand the fear of gaining back weight - it's happened to me in my life even without smoking or quitting. But it is unhealthy - probably as bad for you in the long run as obesity would be.

If you do decide to go for it, here's a spark column discussing how to fend off weight gain:

I understand the desire for tightening, muscles, strength. It's not likely to happen as long as you smoke. Your body just can't cooperate. Spark is all about health, not primarily size. You are already tiny if you fit into size 2 and 4 clothes. If you are more muscular you may need size 6 but you will still have less body fat.
Please take care of yourself and deal with the smoking first. You will always get support here to deal with any weight that you have gained, but frankly, even after a couple of days of giving up smoking you will be able to exercise so much better that you can burn a lot more calories.
God is with us regardless of our good or bad choices because he loves us the way we are, unconditionally. He won't love us any more if we do better, but we can enjoy ourselves more the healthier we are.
Best wishes,
Birgit emoticon

So far, I like to look at the weight loss ticker. Really, I need to adjust and set a new goal, because I WANT to lose ten more pounds. But I don't HAVE to - all my size 2-and 4 clothes fit again. What I need now is TONING, tightening, muscles, strength. IF I could get down under 100 punds, people would be telling me I'm too thin - THEN, and only then, would I try to quit smoking. Because women gain weight when they quit - even more than men do - and I don't EVER want to be back where I was before I started this journey. God has been with me all the way - together we achieved it - but if I get rid of the weight loss ticker, maybe I won't see what I've done as often as I do now.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you”

It was hard to turn loose of the loss ticker because it showed how far I'd come, but the maintenance ticker shows the reality--I wasn't forever striving to get down to 113, but I wanted the "plus or minus" from 115. Thanks for pointing them out!

I particularly like the fact that I can change the appearance of the maintenance ticker without changing my goal weight. Whenever I change my goal weight, my target calorie and macronutrient ranges change; so I don't want to do that unless I want to adjust the nutrition goals anyway.

I decided to go back to a weight loss ticker from the maintenance ticker. The reason is that I'd like to allow myself a wider range than the maintenance ticker gives me. If I stay within about 10 lbs. of my goal weight I'm quite happy as long as my clothes fit and I feel strong. When I'm on the upper end of my ideal range a weight loss ticker motivates me better to get to the lower end of my range. emoticon

I love that they now have a maintenance ticker. It was a bit disheartening to see your weight go up and down the bottom of the scale or have to put your weight down lower than your intended goal so that you can save updates on your spark page.

I like the maintenance "range" because that's how I think. A little above or below is fine. I prefer to be a little below (which doesn't show up on the regular ticker) because I guess I'm just a saver at heart. I always have extra "just in case" money in my checking account and do my taxes early. I like that buffer of time, money and weight.

Thank you for including the link so I could make the change. Now if only my diet plan would automatically update to a maintenance amount of calories et al!

I started SP at 138 lbs in October 2010. My goal weight was supposed to be 125, which I reached in January 2011. I have stayed at 125 (give or take a few pounds) ever since.

Check it out. You can pick either whether you're up or down in your goal range, or how many weeks you've been on maintenance.

Awesome.

As far as showing how far we've come and how long we've been here, as Nell points out there are options like putting text in your signature, or even using your profile pic like I do. So it doesn't have to be a choice whether to share the information, just how you want to share it.
