Good for you KP! I'm so glad you had no polyps. That is always good. Don't you feel great now that it's over and you know you are healthy? Good luck to you in 5 years!

Well, I had my screening colonoscopy last Friday. Best news, no polyps or specimen taken. Due to a his of my Dad having 1 benign polyp ~ 40 yo, I will be screened again in 5 yr.
The Moviprep went well, no problem. In fact, it was the easiest part (my doc splits the doses between the night before and the next AM). It turned out that I have an alpha loop in the sigmoid and a retro tipped uterus, so it was rough going. Next time I have been told that it will have to be conducted under full anesthesia. This is not a situation that anyone would have known about beforehand, so don't let my experience dissuade anyone from doing the right thing!

That's great, Kathy! Isn't it a relief that your DH is healthy...something you don't have to worry about! Good for you for being next!

BTW, Nightskystar...my BIL insisted that he didn't need to be near the bathroom and after he messed up three pairs of underpants, my sister said she was going to lock him in the bathroom! emoticon

Thanks to all you wonderful people for your help. :D My DH came through with flying colors and says that he is ready for his next screen in 5 years. I will be next, after our daughter's wedding in November. Your advice and helpful hints were truly appreciated.

Well, my perspective is that you can be fit and healthy without being skinny; in other words healthy behaviors = better health at any size. It's great that you had a good experience. I think most people find out the actual experience is much better than what they imagined it would be like. Thanks for sharing.

NIGHTSTARSKY - Just curious, but since your prep seemed to have a "less intense" effect on you, was the doc happy with the result? In other words, nothing left in there, right?

i thought so too Chris. My stepdad had warmed me not to get 3 feet from the restroom..I think everyone is different. I had been concerned about my cardiac meds and had to take them early so they would dissolve and get into my system before the cleanse...It was my biggest concern and the doctor worked closely with me to make sure I was comfortable about it.

I made sure I didn't stuff myself the day before the day of prep since what goes in must come out... emoticon

After awhile, I put tray table near the potty and kept my bottle of prep and glass right there so I didn't have to move!

To help with the sore tushie problem, consider installing a bidet attachment on your toilet ahead of time. Many are available starting at around $35. Anyone can install it, no plumber needed. Go to Amazon.com and type "bidet" in the search box. Can't recommend this wonderful appliance highly enough. With the bidet, you rinse your bum with water after going. When everything is clean, you can blot with TP - no irritation from rubbing. I've had one for a couple of years now, and would not want to be without it.

I think each doctor has their own preference for what product to use to prep for the procedure. My FP doctor directed me to use Ducolax, mixed with water, before a sigmoidscopy and the doctor who did the colonoscopy directed me to use Miralax. The Ducolax tasted TERRIBLE and I had a very hard time drinking it--even cold and even fast--I gagged a lot. The Miralax didn't have any taste at all and I could mix it with any clear liquid (as long as it wasn't red). Both worked well at cleansing the bowel--both doctors commented that I had done a great job with this. From the postings below I gather that Moviprep works very fast and that may be a good thing for some people. Me, I'd rather take a little longer and be able to actually drink the product without gagging. But, do check with your doctor, maybe he/she has an alternate suggestion for you.

make sure to ask your doc before you flavor it...mine said NO on that. I know the golightly they let you? and i dont know why mine said i couldnt..but i can tell you when i picked it up at the pharmacy the phramacist reminded me not to, also, and there was a red warning sticker on the pharmacy label saying not to, also. Maybe something just my specific doc doesnt allow?

Hi, I did use Moviprep , wish I knew to flavor it! No one told me! Just be sure to be VERY close to your toilet!

I did read recently that some flavored it with vodka! LOL

Welcome to our team, Kath. I used MoviPrep for my first colonoscopy and remember it having a slightly lemony taste -- not bad, but not great, either. At first, I just drank it and tried not to think about it. Since the prep was split into two parts, by the time I got ready to drink the second batch, I was dreading it a little. I didn't even think about flavoring it with anything else -- don't know whether the doc would have approved it, anyway. However, I just drank each glass pretty fast and tried to think of something else totally while drinking. Once it was inside, I congratulated myself and started reading my book again (very near my bathroom). All in all, it wasn't so bad that I would refuse to use it again -- it just wasn't great. For the second colonoscopy last August (10 years after the first), I used another product that I can't even remember the name of at the moment. It was nearly tasteless and easier to get down. However, MoviPrep did the job well -- the doc was very pleased with the prep, so just hold your nose if you need to, drink it down and wait for the "action" which will come along a little while later. If you don't like it, you can ask for a different product when you get scheduled for another colonoscopy - hopefully that will be 10 years down the road!!
Congratulations on getting your appointment scheduled -- you'll be better off for knowing the health status of colon!

Hi Kath and welcome! I used four Ducolax tablets at noon and then drank "Golightly" (who in the world names these preps?) Believe me, I did NOT "golightly." Whatever you drink, make sure it is cold and drink it as fast as you can...the faster you drink, the sooner you are done! Stay close to the potty! Take a book and read. I found Cottonelle with Aloe and the Cottonelle moist wipes to be the best things to use because your butt does get sore after awile.

Hi Kath and welcome!!!
I wasnt allowed to flavor my Moviprep. it was the only bad part of the whole procedure..it does taste not great. but heres how i did it. i got it COLD first. then i drank it right out of the bottle i mixed it in. i closed my eyes, let it roll past my tounge and didnt stop till it was down. i gulped about 8 huge gulps..and that did the amount they required. i actually did a bit more every time so the last time was smaller. I did not find i was in trouble bathroom wise..it was very manageable for me.
When i asked the doc how come there wasnt anything else a bit more palateable, he said there IS..something new, tasteless and much like water. i told him next time thats what i want!!
But, really? you have to drink this stuff only once for a short period. its not that bad.

I haven't had any experience with using Moviprep, so I can't address that issue. However, if your request for experiences and advice goes beyond the prep, read all the stories and messages from the members of this panel. That will answer a lot of questions and maybe ease your concerns about the procedure. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask--either by posting here and/or by sending a "Private Message" to any of us.

This last time I had my second colonoscopy after 10 years I was told to use MoviPrep. It tastes crummy, so be sure to flavor it (I used Kool Aid and sweetener--just avid red coloration.) Though I didn't get all the prep in, turned out I didn't need it. I was properly cleaned out. Yes, it works fast, and I think that's a blessing. I hated the previous prep where I didn't know what was going to happen for 12 hours or more.

Let us know how it goes for you. You'll do fine. The prep is rotten but the test is a cinch.

Stay close to the toilet! It works pretty dang fast. If you can, flavor it with a flavor that you like because it is pretty nasty tasting without added flavor (at least mine was!)

Thanks in advance.
